Gmail IMAP and autosave

OK, I've been trying to figure this one out for weeks, and I'm tearing my hair out -
As stated, i'm using IMAP with Gmail and Mail.
I don't want to have all of my messages "archived", when I delete a message, I want it deleted.
So, I am "moving deleted messages to the Trash mailbox", and "storing deleted messages on the server" for this account.
When I am writing a new message with this account, I end up with a copy in the account's trash (on the server) for each minute I take to write the message. This will sometimes be many minutes, hence many messages. It is resulting in unneccesary network usage when using my iPhone with the same account, as there is almost always a ton of messages in the trash to be synced.
I can't find any info pertaining to this behavior, has anyone got an idea of something I can try - I am at my wit's end
Thanks
Jake

There is nothing "general" about Gmail and how it works with any email client -- it is neither true IMAP nor true POP.
Gmail service has the All Mail folder, and when accessing as IMAP it is included in the Sidebar. That folder can be excluded from use in Mail -- Do a Google search with Gmail and Advanced IMAP Controls. To enable this particular exclusion, sign on to your Gmail account via your browser, click on Settings, then on Labs, and enable advanced IMAP control. Once that is done, you can then click on the Labels tab in Settings and make some selections, including to exclude the All Mail folder.
Where in the Sidebar do your see folders relating to Send -- I am unclear about your description of that, and that makes all the difference in what to suggest?

  • GMail, IMAP and sending messages from the iPhone

I have recently switched from POP to IMAP. My ISP doesn't support IMAP, and so I get GMail to pop my ISP, and then download the messages from GMail with IMAP. Within GMail I have set things so that by default I can send a message through my GMail account using +my normal ISP's email address+; recipients are therefore unaware of my use of GMail - which is how I want it.
BUT ... messages sent from the iPhone show up as having been sent from my GMail address. Is there any way that I can change this, so they appear to have come from my normal address? I don't want to set up a second a/c on the iPhone, as I want all of the messages to stay within the GMail IMAP system.
GMail's web based >> >Settings >Accounts >Send mail as: >> facility does not seem to appear within the iPhone.
    Or am I missing something?
    Any assistance gratefully received

Many thanks for your reply - and I think that I understand what you are saying; however the GMail system does allow me to send a message using another "reply to" address so long as I have authenticated that email address within GMail first. I've been through that process, and I can send a message which appears to be from my normal ISP's address but in reality is sent through GMail (what some might refer to as using a spoofed address?) - but I can't do this from my iPhone.
If the restriction is insurmountable for the iPhone, I'll just have to revert to POP instead of IMAP, as I can then separate my normal address and my GMail address - it's just that a combined IMAP system would have been a more elegant solution ...
    Kind Regards,

  • IPhone Gmail IMAP and Document Attachments

    Hi, first post....
I've recently set up my iPhone's mail app for Gmail IMAP which is great apart from the fact that Word.doc attachments now appear inline with the text of the email complete with lots of garbled letters and numbers, rather than as the neat attachments I received when using Gmail with POP. Strange because it seems to work OK for photos.
I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this issue, whether this is a feature of the way IMAP works, or whether there is some setting in Gmail or in mail on the iPhone that I am overlooking which might solve the issue.
    Any help would wonderful

So to start to answer my own question, this seems to only be a problem when sending mail from the Mac mail client to iPhone mail client via Gmail, with other services (web mail, outlook) there isn't a problem!
However it does seem to be a Mac mail client wide issue (10.4.11) since sending from my Mac to iPhone using a different account (not Gmail) yields the same result

  • Gmail IMAP and POP3 in an infinite  sync loop - HELP!

Since installing Snow Mail has gotten one of my gmail accounts into an infinite spinning wheel. I am not sure if it is stuck or if it is actually doing something but I can't stop it. My other gmail IMAP account works fine in Mail, it's just this isolated account.
I have tried both POP and IMAP with no luck. I have deleted the account in question and reconfigured it... no luck. HELP!

The full question was which type of access is enabled in the web settings page? And the question derives from the fact that setting up a Gmail account defaults to IMAP, but if you were previously accessing as POP, and wish to continue accessing as POP, then some other steps will need to be taken during setup.

  • Gmail IMAP and my BB - not showing messages marked as read

I have a Blackberry Curve 8530 with v5.0.xx installed. I just setup my Gmail IMAP on my BB and when I read a message on my BB it doesn't show as read on my computer and visa versa. Anybody know why this is happening??
    Thanks much

Not exactly. What I am saying is that your BB reconciles against your email Server. Your PC client as well reconciles against your email Server. The BB and the PC client do not reconcile against each other OTA -- the Server is always in the middle. What the BB will reconcile (against the server) is governed by the KB I linked you to. What your PC client will do is whatever it will do (I've no idea what your PC client is nor what it's capabilities are to reconcile things against your email server).

  • Problems with Gmail IMAP and 'use this Mailbox for..'

Basically trying to re-setup Mail for Gmail IMAP after having to Time Machine back to a previous date after something or other stopped it working. Only thing that remains wrong is the Mail Trash. I have remapped the Drafts and Sent folders correctly, however the trash does not appear.
I am using the Gmail Labs feature that lets you show or hide any of Gmails folders.
If I try and delete a message it doesn't seem to go anywhere - if I delete it again it does dissapear (but I don't know where to!). If I force the Trash to appear in the sidebar (command 5) the little circular progress thing appears when i do the delete, but clicking on the Trash can shows no contents.
Should I 'show' Gmail's Bin and set that for the Trash in Mail?
I've obviously done something wrong here remapping or whatever so can anyone help me to sort it out? Please!

    No ideas?

  • Drafts folder relocation Outlook 2013 and Gmail IMAP and multiple saves to trash folder

    Hi,
I have Office professional 2013 32 bit running on Win 7 64bit. I have an issue that I know has been discussed but I see no resolution.
The drafts are saved on the server not locally and the trash folder fills with multiple copies of the draft, the number of copies appears to relate to the time of editing the draft. I have to go in and delete these copies in Trash after writing an email.
Outlook 2013 does not allow me to remap the drafts folder I click unsubscribe and it says the folder is a special folder and cannot be unsubscribed in Outlook. I use the account on my iPhone and this allows me to unsubscribe from the folder.
Has anyone found a solution or is anyone working on a resolution for this problem?
    Best regards,
    Clive
    Regards, Clive

I am having a similar problem with trash receiving multiple copies of some drafts. In last 20 minutes 19 copies of a draft have been included in trash. It seems to happen when I view a draft --but not solely
Using Outlook 2013 with IMAP GMail on windows 7 on a laptop. It synchs with my IPHONE. Yesterday I called Dell Support. They said it was a virus -- though a thorough scan found one item --it was deleted and problem continues.

  • Problems with gmail imap and not seeing new messages in inbox

I have done countless searches and have not been able to find anything that works. I am gathering that mail on the iPhone 4 and the ipad is not illy compatible. Here is what I am having trouble with:
I recently switched my gmail from pop to imap. The reason behind this is that I could not have mail running on my MacBook and still see my messages on my iPhone 4 or ipad at the same time. What would happen is that any new messages would download onto my MacBook and I could not see them in mail in the inbox on my iPhone and ipad. So, I switched to imap so that I could leave mail running on all my devices and be able to see the same messages no matter what I was viewing them with. Here is the next problem. Now for some reason, only some messages go to the inbox, all of the rest go to the"all mail" folder. Is there a way to fix this so that I can view all of my messages in the "all inboxes" in mail?
Maybe I am misunderstanding how this is supposed to work but any help is appreciated. I have checked the filter settings in gmail (which I had none) and the labels and still nothing works. I have also verified from the gmail help my mail and gmail settings.
Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks for the help!

  • Anyone using gmail imap and and Apple Mail?

Can you tell me if, when you use Apple mail for imap gmail access, what address source does it use?
Does the imap pull up the address auto complete of gmail or does it rely on your address book on your mac (or both)?

I'm using Google IMAP with Mail and it uses the addresses I've got in my Mac's Address Book. Can't tell you if you can also use addresses from Gmail but I'd be inclined to think you could. • Mail account types exchange imap vs exchange 2007 vs Gmail imap

I have an 'Exchange imap' account type that went on the fritz when I had to change my password. I think I did enough to it to mess it up forever so I wanted to just rebuild the account from scratch. However, when I went in to create the same account again there is no option for 'exchange imap'; just 'pop', 'exchange 2007', and 'imap'. I have two other account that are 'gmail imap' and there is no option for that either.
Where do these account type designations come from that there are no options for and will I be loosing any functionality by picking one or the other of the regular account types?

also, under the old account that i screwed up the settings for there is a space for 'outlook web access' that doesn't appear if i recreate the account using either 'exchange 2007' or 'imap'

  • Good morning! i'd like to know why when I write an email in Mail, it creates numerous copies each second which fill the trash box. My email is set up with IMAP and is a gmail account. Thanks

good morning! i'd like to know why when I write an email in Mail, it creates numerous copies each second which fill the trash box. My email is set up with IMAP and is a gmail account. Thanks

Open Mail preferences and select Accounts then MailBox Behavior. You probably need to unclick the safe draft to server.

  • IPhone and iPad iOS 5.1: Gmail IMAP attachments not downloading

I'm having an issue with Gmail (IMAP) not downloading attachments from myself! (I use Gmail to archive documents, etc). Same issue on my iPhone 4 and iPad 3, both iOS 5.1, using the default mail app with default "Gmail" account (IMAP) set up.
They *were* both working fine, then I erased both devices for a clean install. Set up the email accounts again, now none of my own attachments download on either device.
When I say not downloading, I see the attachment download box (dashed box with download arrow inside), and on pressing it, the attachment downloads (0 to XX kb), but then the download box just flashes back to showing the file size, and the attachments do not show. I keep pressing the download box but it flashes and nothing happens. Same with .jpg .png .doc .xls .pdf, etc.
    BEFORE THE FORMAT:
All attachments downloaded correctly (as far as I can remember) before I had erased both devices.
    NOW:
Attachments sent *from* me ([email protected]), via Gmail website, to me or anyone else, BEFORE formatting my iPad 3 and iPhone 4, do NOT download. However, if I then forward the email, including attachments, the attachments appear in the outgoing message preview! (so they're not corrupt)
Attachments sent *from* me ([email protected]), via Gmail website, to me or anyone else, AFTER formatting my iPad 3 and iPhone 4, DO download and correctly appear in the email.
Attachments sent *from* me ([email protected]), via iPhone/iPad, to me or anyone else, any time BEFORE or AFTER formatting my iPad 3 and iPhone 4, appear correctly.
Attachments sent from anyone else, *to* me ([email protected]), always appear correctly.
On a friend's iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1), adding my gmail account using the default "Gmail" setting (IMAP) works fine - all attachments download and show!
On a friend's iPhone 4 (iOS 5.1), adding my gmail account using the default "Gmail" setting (IMAP) replicates my problem - all attachments from me (sent before the format) do not download. (So it's not specific to my own devices!)
Gmail Exchange server (m.google.com) works fine: all attachements download and show correctly. Also no problem using Thunderbird IMAP or the Gmail web interface.
So it looks like it might be a problem with iOS 5.1, however it all seemed to be working fine before I did the erase/format... and new emails sent from me always appear correctly... actually that might explain why it was working before (as I was always downloading new emails, and not looking at archives).
So the only other thing that might have changed is some IMAP server setting? Could the headers or mail flags have changed somehow for older emails??
    Any thoughts? :-/

I reproduced this problem over the weekend, on friends' iPhones (all running iOS 5.1). Opening their Gmail sent folder and trying to view an attachment sent from a while back (basically one that hasn't already been cached by the Mail app) failed to display. Exactly the same problem - download arrow flashes and attachement won't show / can't be opened.
I'm in the UK, but not sure if that affects anything.
Thinking this might be a bug in the Mail app in iOS 5.1, as earlier versions work fine.

  • Mail and Gmail IMAP: duplicates in sent folder

    Hi there,
I recently set up my Gmail account for IMAP and configured Mail.app accordingly. I have several mail accounts which all get directed over my Gmail account. It all works fine, but whenever I send a mail from Mail.app from one of my mail accounts, it appears twice in my sent folder in Mail.app (it's not sent twice, I checked that, and it appears normally in the sent folder of the web interface).
It's seriously clucttering my sent folder, does anybody have an idea how to fix this? Maybe a problem with labels?
    Help greatly appreciated,
    J

    Anyone? No idea?

  • Rules problem and sluggishness in Gmail IMAP

I just plugged in my Gmail IMAP settings into Mail, and it is not listening to rules set to move all of my sent mail into a sent folder (into either the "on my mac" or the "gray globe" folders). The mail from me just sits obstinately in the "all mail" or "Inbox" folder.
Also, every time I select an IMAP folder, it decides it gives me the little piechart time indicator symbol and I have to wait 20-30 seconds to see my messages.
    Ideas?

First of all, for the issue w/ the sent/junk/trash/drafts folder - if you select any of those folders in the sidebar, then go to the 'Mailbox' menu and select 'use this mailbox for' - you can manually set those folders to be used as the default folders - so in turn no need to use the rules. -The inbox however should store all incoming messages automatically.
One issue that I need to point out is that for some reason Gmail is placing all the chat logs from Google Talk into your 'all mail' folder...
Now why Gmail IMAP is so horribly slow compared to most other IMAP services, I honestly don't have a clue, and I must add I'm having the exact same problem.
