Gmail IMAP new message notify sound

I recently setup my IMAP GMail account using Mail 3.3 but when I receive a message the red notification icon appears but no notification sound...
Is this normal? Can it be fixed?

Hi Dobee,
This is a known bug, it has been around since 10.5.0. The bug is currently being investigated by Apple Engineering.

  • Gmail IMAP "Copying message" feedback loop

Yesterday I sent an email with 10mbs of attachments from mail.app through gmail imap. after the message sent, I noticed that the spinning icon next to the gmail inbox was perpetually spinning. in the 'activity' window, it says:
    Gmail Synchronizing with server
    copying message
I figured mail.app and gmail were synchronizing the email. so i let the process go for a few hours yesterday, when I noticed that no new email had come in via gmail, so i checked the account through the web browser. sure enough to find new email, but nothing coming through to mail.app. so i cancelled the process and but the activity status just said "STOPPING: copying message" and didn't go away. So I restarted mail.app. as soon as mail.app was back up and running, the "copying message" status reappeared.
Last night, I let the operation go throughout the night, to wake up this morning with nothing changed. So this morning I checked my "recovered messages (Gmail).mobx" folder to see several 345mb message files. I removed the whole "recovered messages (Gmail).mobx" folder to the desktop and restarted mail.app but I still have the same error.
    Incidentals:
The original message with the 10mbs of attachments was a series of 47 photos. Originally, I had dragged full res photos(6-7mbs/photo) into a mail.app message and chose "medium" from the "image size" pop-up at the bottom pane of the message.
My theory is that in between placing the photos in the message and mail.app resizing them, mail.app and gmail tried to save a draft of the message to the server with all the photos at their original size (they might have been somewhere around that 345mb mark). And somehow mail.app is freaking out continually trying to upload a draft of the message with 345mbs of attachments. just a theory.
how do i get mail.app and gmail imap out this weird feedback loop?

I had the same problem myself, except that the message contained over 200 pictures. The actual email was only 7MB, but Mail must have decided to create a draft before it resized the pictures. I only noticed the problem after Mail had consumed over 1.5GB of my limited bandwidth and was taking up almost 4GB in RAM, and a lot more in swap. The solution here worked, but it's unfortunate that I needed it at all. Why would I ever want Mail to upload attached photos to an IMAP server at their original size, especially after the final version of the email with resized photos has already been sent? This NEEDS to be fixed, since it could be a huge problem for someone who is less computer savvy.

  • Thunderbird IMAP new messages not refreshing

New email is not being synced consistently for my Exchange 2013 mailbox via IMAP
Forcing Thunderbird to check for new email shows no new email. If I restart Thunderbird I will get the latest email, also if I force Thunderbird offline (little computer screen icon on the bottom right) then go back online I will also be able to receive new email. If I leave Thunderbird after some amount of time (hours) I will get updated email.
Behaviour happens using Linux/Thuderbird latest version as well as Windows 8.1/Thunderbird lastest version.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks
    John

    Matt,
Thanks for the suggestion the setting was already selected. I am digging through some logs and hopefully discover what is causing this behaviour.

  • Problems with gmail imap and not seeing new messages in inbox

I have done countless searches and have not been able to find anything that works. I am gathering that mail on the iPhone 4 and the ipad is not illy compatible. Here is what I am having trouble with:
I recently switched my gmail from pop to imap. The reason behind this is that I could not have mail running on my MacBook and still see my messages on my iPhone 4 or ipad at the same time. What would happen is that any new messages would download onto my MacBook and I could not see them in mail in the inbox on my iPhone and ipad. So, I switched to imap so that I could leave mail running on all my devices and be able to see the same messages no matter what I was viewing them with. Here is the next problem. Now for some reason, only some messages go to the inbox, all of the rest go to the"all mail" folder. Is there a way to fix this so that I can view all of my messages in the "all inboxes" in mail?
Maybe I am misunderstanding how this is supposed to work but any help is appreciated. I have checked the filter settings in gmail (which I had none) and the labels and still nothing works. I have also verified from the gmail help my mail and gmail settings.
Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks for the help!

    No ideas?

  • GMail IMAP account won't download new messages - still can send

Really bizzare bug...I use Mail with two accounts setup, both of which are GMail Imap accounts. Since yesterday I have not been able to download new messages for my inbox whenever Mail has been opened already.
When I first open Mail, it seems to sync correctly and get new messages, but after it's been open if anyone sends me a new message, Mail fails to download the message. Manually clicking "Get New Mail" or using the "Get All New Mail" from menu doesn't seem to help.
Rebuilding my Inbox does help in that it syncs my inbox back up, but after that it doesn't download messages like it's supposed to every minute (preference setting).
Can't think of anything majorly different that I've done in the last day, although I did install RC1 of "Things"....
    I'm on OS X version 10.5.6

Has anyone actually done this and had it work? I'm a little anxious to try it given the "Jeez. Good catch..."
If this fix works, why does it work?
I'm running Mac OS 10.5.4 and Mail 3.3 on a MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo with 1GB RAM.
I'm not sure that there is a connection, but Mail stopped downloading email from all my various email accounts shortly after I added a new IMAP account. I've now got 3 active IMAP accounts (one is Gmail), an inactive HTTPMail acct (hotmail) and an inactive POP acct.
I have tried taking all accts offline and bringing all back online at once and each individually. I have quit Mail and re-launched it. I have tried rebuilding each acct's inbox. I have tired re-launching after deactivating all accts but one. None of this has worked. If I click on "Get Mail", the pinwheels spin next to each acct inbox for a second, but no new mail appears.
What is really strange that one or two emails might download from any given account on any given day, but that's it. The one or two new emails that might appear from time to time appear to do so over night - I get up in the morning to check my email and discover at most one or two new emails, even though when I check the accts by webmail there are dozens of new emails between the three accts.
    God, I HATE webmail!
When relaunching or taking the Gmail acct online I sometimes get an error message that it's certificate is invalid. I find this hard to believe as Google is no penny-anty operation, but I clikc "connect" and still no new email.

  • Why do IMAP accounts not display new messages in viewer?

I have been having persistent problems with Mail not displaying new IMAP messages in the viewer. I know the messages are on the server because I can see them on my iPhone. Sometimes they will appear if I quit Mail, then relaunch it. Other times it is necessary to restart to make them appear. I have deleted and recreated the accounts (MobileMe and Gmail), reinstalled the 10.5.7 update and applied the latest Java update.
The Console messages make it seem like in might be a conflict with Safari 4.02. Upon starting Mail I get messages like this:
07/27/2009 3:01:35 PM Mail[302] WebKit Threading Violation - NSData* -[WebArchive data](WebArchive*, objc_selector*) called from secondary thread.
I've seen similar complaints elsewhere in forums, but have found no solutions. Is there one?

Can you refrain from viewing the messages on the iPhone, and only check via webmail to see if new ones are then failing to be noted?
Btw, in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced is use IDLE selected for either account -- I select it for MobileMe, but not for Gmail? When selected for MobileMe, the mail is "pushed" to eligible devices, and in Mail, results in the new message chime not sounding for that one account.

  • Mail App stopped downloading new messages from Gmail

I'm using MBP with OS X Lion.
I've been using Mail App for my two Gmail accounts. I also use two different types of mail downloading systems (POP and IMAP) for them. For some reason, the speed of downloading new messages started slowing down a few weeks ago; however, I could still use it until today. Today, it seems like it is completely out.
It just stopped downloading new messages completely.
For the POP account, it says:
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “POP” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “pop.gmail.com” on port 995 timed out.
For the IMAP account, it says:
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “IMAP” or try again.
The server returned the error: The connection to the server “pop.gmail.com” on port 993 timed out.
The weird part is that I can still send an email out of those accounts fine.
I checked the settings for Gmail, and everything seemed just fine.
I tried to re-do everything so deleted the IMAP account. Now it shows the message below:
The Google IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
I tried Connection Doctor and it shows as below:
I followed the suggestion by changing unchecking those boxes for SSL, but it didn't help either.
I tried "Rebuild" under mail box menu bar but it also didn't do anything.
Can anyone help me with this issue?
    Thank you in advance.

By the way, my Mail App is version 5.3

  • Mail 3.6 doesn't show new message in IMAP folder

    Hello,
I am using Mail with an IMAP server.
On this IMAP server, mails are automatically sorted to different mailboxes (IMAP folder) via .procmail.rc directives.
When I receive an Email and when this email is dispatched in the correct mailbox, Mail3.6 doesn't display this new message.
Questions : How to set-up Mail3.6 to correctly display new incoming mail server sorted in IMAP folder ? or How to overcome this Mail bug ?
PS : This question was already asked a few months ago on Apple Bug Report, answer was that this bug will be corrected on the next release.... Seems not...
    Thank you by adance

    Hello,
I am having a very similar problem that just started happening recently when I started using gmail folders instead of my school's email (both IMAP).
I have all emails configured for IMAP and the messages arrive fine, but when mail applies my custom filters and the messages are moved to the individual folders, the new message indicator (on the file and on the dock icon) are not present. The only new messages that appear are those in the mail Inbox. When I then click on the individual folders (I have to click through them all individually) it recognizes the new, unread email and updates the indicators (both next to the custom folder and on the dock icon).
This is a frustrating issue because I do not have any indication that I have new mail unless I go and click on each folder individually.
The issue just started occurring when i switched to using my gmail account. The folders seem to be set up appropriately to move messages in Mail and also have them labeled on gmail ([GMAIL]/foldername), but Mail just doesn't seem to recognize the messages as new once they have been moved to the folders until I sync (either by clicking on the folder or by using the "synchronize all accounts" command).
Any suggestions? I found this same issue in the archived questions (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7513842), but it was not resolved.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

  • Mail 4.1,not playing "new message" sound, and some sent mail not in outBox

For some reason, no "new message" sound is being played (has been like this for a few weeks), and some (~1/10) sent mail does not show up in the sent box (been like this for a long time).
And yes, preferences are set to "play new messages sound"
    Any ideas?

I would guess that's an IMAP account, go into mail preferences and select advanced tab for that account and uncheck use IDLE command and the new mail sound should work.
Not sure about the sent mail problem.

  • Mail does not correctly reflect read status of Gmail IMAP messages

Apple Mail is no longer correctly reflecting the read status of emails that have been read on other devices/computers when viewing my Gmail IMAP inbox. Whereas my iPhone and Gmail account both show changes in items' read status immediately or on next mail retrieval, in Apple Mail the only way I have currently of updating the read status is to quit Mail and restart it. Neither automatic fetching of Mail, nor clicking "Get Mail", nor right-clicking the Inbox and choosing "Synchronize Gmail" work.
My other IMAP account (MobileMe) does not exhibit this behaviour, but Mail.app does this with Gmail on both of my desktop computers.
Anyone out there with a similar problem? And are there any possible solutions, or is it a bug/incompatibility with GMail?

This problem is still occurring for me in 10.5.5 - I even tested it by creating a new gmail account with only 1 message in it, in case it was a problem with large mailboxes, and the same thing happened.
Mail messages marked read elsewhere are not updated in Mail on the next send/receive. I wonder if everyone with this problem could report the bug at http://www.apple.com/support/feedback and see if we can get this solved in 10.5.6

  • New mail in Gmail doesn't apper on iphone 4s without forcing it to download new messages

New mails in GMail doesn't appear on iPhone 4S without forcing it to download new messages
I was using hotmail in my iPhone 4S but many people suggested me to use GMail account because it is good for Syncing. I also have Mac so i ditched the hotmail and configured GMail account. Now everything works fine on my Mac but not in my iPhone 4S. When a new email comes to my inbox, my Mac display it normally but as far as my iPhone 4S is concerned, it doesn't show even a notification. However when i force it to download the new message by clicking the cricular arrow, it load them and shows them as well. It is not normal because it should do the same thing automatically, not manually. Do you know, how to fix it? AOL mail comes right though, both have the same settings.

    DId you try, settings, notifications?
under your gmail or whatever mail you have you can choose to fetch every 15 minutes, hour, or manually. Sounds like you are on manually, when you open your email.
    MAnually does save battery though.

  • Why is messaging not always notifying me I received a new message?

For some reason when I receive a message it does not play the sound to notify me I received a new message so I am having to look at my phone constantly so I don't miss messages.
Worked fine until iOS 6 upgrade yesterday.

Try doing a hard reset: Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't solve the issue, you could also try backing up the device and restoring the device as new.
In that case, follow the steps in: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
If you're not able to restore the device, this one might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Using that last article will erase everything on the device, so make sure you have a backup!
    Good luck

  • Cannot view new messages after setting up Gmail

I had problems setting up my IMAP so had to delete my Gmail account and reinstall. Anyway, I have about 12K emails, and can view some, but I have 200 new message that I CANNOT View.
Any suggestions??? I've tried nearly everything.
Should I disable POP is IMAP is enabled?
    Thanks

Update: message sent from Mozilla to confirm this new message does appear, so it seems that messages received today 9/26 that were sent before Thunderbird updated to 31.1.2, are not viewable. The header appears but not the message itself. Messages created before midnight are appearing, this is most strange. Maybe the messages from today will appear after midnight.

  • Gmail - new Messages download, then when tapped disappear?

On my 3GS, I'll check my gmail through the client, and new messages will download to the phone. Then, When I tap the new message, the screen jumps to the first unopened message and when I go back to the inbox, the new messages aren't there. Anyone know what's up with that?

You probably have a POP account that is being accessed by another open email client, i.e. the one on your computer. Change over to an IMAP account to prevent this. This will sync any device that you use to access that account with the server, thus you see the same thing on all devices.
I use IMAP GMail and it works/syncs perfectly with my iPhone.

  • New gmail imap

The new Gmail IMAP certainly simplified the configuration process on setting up a new gmail account on the iphone - also syncs a little cleaner. However, the Advanced options on the account was dumbed down...
This is somewhat rare, but anyone who happens to use a seperate 'reply-to' address may run into some trouble. With this new Gmail IMAP setup, you can no longer change your reply-to, as the email address you specify will be used both for authentication (username) and your outgoing email address.
Can I please have my seperate reply-to address back?
(The work-around is to just setup the account up manually as an IMAP account using the 'Other' option... but as I said, it doesnt sync as nicely...)

I found in macosxhints an excellent method to prevent Mail.app synchronizing the All Mail folder. It's by user "ja" and can be found here: <http://www.macosxhints.com/comment.php?mode=display&format=threaded&order=ASC& pid=96614>.
Briefly, you need to open Terminal, use cd to go to $ΗΟΜΕ/Library/Mail/[email protected]@imap.gmail.com/[Gmail] and delete (or move) the All Mail.imapmbox folder (e.g rm -rf "All Mail.imapmbox" - I assume you can also do than from the finder).
Then while still in the same directory ([Gmail]) type:
    ln -s /dev/null "All Mail.imapmbox"
This creates an alias to /dev/null which is essentially a black hole. The All Mail folder in Mail.app will remain empty. There are no more duplicate messages and search works fine. I found this to be the best of the three hints mentioned in the same thread (<http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=200802081934189>).
