GMAIL IMAP PROBLEM (can't duplicate mailbox in apple mail)

I am seriously at my wits end! It has been about a week and I am still having huge problems with my gmail imap account in apple mail. At first, my sent messages were not being imported into apple mail (only about 30 days work). After a bunch of fiddling and trying to fix the problem (deleting the account in apple mail, rehooking up the account, rebuilding the mailbox, switching off IMAP enabling in gmail) the problem has only gotten worse.
Now, only 1000 emails from gmail are sent into apple mail. I know there is a setting within the gmail prefs to limit the amount of messages in an imap folder 1000 but, I have that turned OFF.
As of right now my apple mail shows about 1000 messages in my inbox and 250 or so in my sent mail. None of the mail is from before 12/7/10.
The only thing that seems significant about that date is that I set up another IMAP account on a temporary macbook laptop at a temp job on that day in apple mail (the account has since been deleted when I stopped using the laptop).
Ugh, this is so annoying and frustrating. I often need to look in my mail archive for old messages/attachments.
I can't seem to find any help anywhere, but if you can offer me any advice I would really appreciate it!

Hi,
I don't know if this is relevant... but…
Last year, when I set up a second, temporary Gmail IMAP account, I found that all did not jell well together…
I encountered quite a few problems… sending and receiving… transferring to and from the accounts… and lots of Hangs and Time Outs…
When I had eventually finished with the second account, I not only deleted it from Mac Mail, but Completely Closed and Deleted it with Gmail.
Since then I have had no such problems with my single Gmail IMAP account…
As I said, not sure if this is relevant to your Problem, but thought it might be of interest to you.
Cheers

  • Can I moving mailboxes from Apple Mail 4.6 (OS X Lion) to Apple Mail 7.1 (OS X Mavericks)?

    Hi all,
I've tried to copy my /User/Library/Mail, /User/Library/Mail Downloads and /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist on OS X Lion 10.6.8 to the same dirs in OS X Mavericks. But I still can't see my old mailboxes and messages.
It's possible to migrate from Mail 4.6 to Mail 7.1?
    tks

Apple doesn't have an email system for support. AppleCare is the only method.
You might try the Support link on the Mac App Store, but they're not necessarily the people in charge of the up-to-date program, but they may be able to help you. Don't get your hopes up on that, though. When you contact the App Store support, make sure you note all of the things you stated above along with your Claim Reference number.

  • How do I find duplicate messages in Apple Mail?

    Hi,
How do I find (and delete) duplicate messages in Apple Mail ?
I will have to verify about 1000 messages in different mailboxes, all in Apple Mail.
My system: Mail 4.5 (1084) and Leopard 10.6.8.
    Many thanks,
    D.M.

in any window on a mac, if you just type a letter on the keyboard, the selection in that window will go to a file beginning with that name.   In Eudora, if mail window was sorted by NAME and you typed "E" the selection would move to the last email received from a person who's NAME began with "E",  if you typed "El" it would move to the most recent email received from a person named "El"  if you typed "Ela"  the selection would move to the most recent email received from a person named "Ela".   If mail was sorted by SUBJECT, it would move to the SUBJECT with those same beginning letters.   In mac mail the selection doesn't pick the most recent email, but a completely random one, and it doesn't differentiate between subjects and senders.   If I type "josh" it goes to an email with subject: josh, from 2011, not the most recent email from my friend josh that I got yesterday, even though I have my mail sorted by name.   If I type "Karen", selection moves to an email received from Karen in 2010, not the one I received 2 weeks ago.    In other words, it's completely random and useless.
only way to find something in macmail is to type a name into search box, then organize by name, then scroll to that name, only sometimes those name emails are not sorted by date, so you have to look through to find the most recent one.  then once you found it, you need to delete what's in the search box, and reset the sortation to be by date in order to have a chronological listing of you emails.  In other words, many complicated steps instead of one simple one.

  • Mail crash?? - another Gmail IMAP problem...

    Hi,
This problem seems similar to another recent thread but my Mail app is acting so strangely I think this warrants its own spot.
I have been running Mail up till today with two accounts - a Gmail POP account and a college email ('BlitzMail', for any Dartmouth alums) IMAP account. I had a couple plugins installed - Mail Badger and Mail Act-On.
Today, I decided to switch my Gmail account to IMAP. After I made the switch, everything seemed to be working fine. However, as soon as I clicked send on a test message from my Gmail account to see if I had set everything up correctly, Mail hung for a bit and finally just froze.
After the force quit and restart of the computer, here is what has happened: Mail Act-On has entirely disappeared. It just doesn't appear anymore on the preference pane. Mail Badger is still on the preference pane, although all of the badges that I had previously had have disappeared. Also, I am not able to send any messages with either account. And, both accounts have been very slow and cranky - whenever I click on the Inbox, it takes several seconds to display the messages, and oftentimes displays several copies of them.
Weirdest of all, however, is that I am not able to quit the Mail app. Apple+q simply doesn't work and the only way I can close the app is via a force quit. Finally, for some reason, the actual Mail window has stopped appearing by default and clicking on the dock icon doesn't bring it back. The only way I am able to view the actual window is by clicking View--> Message Viewer.
Any help or suggestions? I use both accounts rather frequently and would like to get this sorted out as quickly as possible.
    Thanks a bunch!
(And wow, this totally makes me envious of Time Machine!)

for me, mail badger was the culprit. i e-mailed the developer and have not heard back.
right after switching to gmail imap, i too was having the same problems as the original poster: could not properly quit mail; had to force-quit mail; when mail started the message window was not visible; always had to go to window-->message viewer to get it to appear; and on top of all that, mail badger didn't even work.
got rid of it and all was fine. running httpmail, growlmail, mail act-on, mail followup, and largely no problems.
but i think people are also right in saying that apple mail is finicky about gigantic imap accounts...which is why i keep almost all my gmail messages in the "all mail" folder instead of the inbox. something tells me the inbox loads faster that way?

  • Can't create mailboxes in iOS6 Mail

I found the following in another thread, but it doesn't work for me. Don't know why.
Go into Mail app, click the back button in the upper left hand corner under you see all your mailboxes.
If its an IMAP account, you will also see a section under all your inboxes, go into there, and click EDIT.
Create anew mailbox button appears at the bottom (iOS6)
I have an iPad4 with multiple eMail accounts, some IMAP, one of them POP. Following the above instructions, there's an EDIT button to the right of the word "Mailboxes". Clicking on it it changes to "Done" but nothing else changes on the screen. Clicking on any of the right arrows next to any of the accounts produces an EDIT button that presents three buttons at the bottom, "Delete," "Move," and "Mark." The Move button gives me the option to put it in the Trash. I'm missing something.

To create a screenshot - hold down on the sleep/power button and while holding down on it - tap and hold down on the Home Button until you see the screen flash white and you hear the sound of a camera shutter go off. The screenshot will be automatically saved to the Camera Roll of the Photos App.
Let me preface my steps here with this .... Gmail on the iPad works a little bit differently than other email accounts. Gmail has an archive option for one. What I am describing here should work with an IMAP email account on your iPad.
Launch the Mail App and go to the Mailboxes view - the view where you can see all of your email accounts. Select your email account here.
In the next window - you should see an Edit Button at the top of the window next to the name of the email account. Tap on the Edit Button.
After you tap Edit - you should see a New Mailbox Button at the bottom - Tap New Mailbox.
The you will see a window where you can Name the Mailbox and Save the new Mailbox. Name the mailbox. You can choose the location of the new mailbox with some limitations - experiment with it and see what works for you. Then tap on the Save Button at the top.
When you are finished - tap the blue Done Button at the top of the window that you see in the 3rd screenshot.

  • Duplicate mailboxes and deleted mail archive

So after installing the latest Mac security update, Security Update 2006-007 PowerPC (no idea if this is related to the problem or not), Mail 2.1 was not able to receive messages from my POP earthlink account, even though I could check it through my browser, so the internet connection was not the problem. Everything looked the same in the Mail preferences, so I decided to run Earthlink Total Access and use it to 'set up Mail for my account' in case anything had changed that I wouldn't know about. It said Mail was already configured for the account and when I relaunched Mail there were now two listings of my same email account - one with all my old messages and one that was 'new' and empty and both now received a new email at the same time. Naturally, I found it displeasing to have two copies of one account showing, so I tried to delete the new copy. I can't remember if I tried to delete this duplicate mailbox through the preferences or by right-clicking on it in the left hand column. Anyway, both boxes are still there and they still work, but all my old messages are gone - except for sent messages. Mail still lists all the subject lines, but instead of the actual contents, clicking on them shows this message:
"The message from ____ <________@________.com> concerning “___” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I hope there's a backup copy somewhere of these messages. [I already ran FileSalvage and it did not turn up any.] Oh, they don't show up in Spotlight anymore, either. If Mail itself doesn't keep an archive, is there a way to look at recently trashed items on the hard drive and recover them? I suppose I'll need to do this before I write new data to the disk, so please respond quickly. [Maybe I overwrote them when I downloaded FileSalvage....]
OK, so accepting that all the old emails are gone forever, I still have these very important questions about the application:
How do I re-download the emails that are still on the server? I have emails going back to Nov. 9th that I can access through a browser, but I'd like to at least get those onto my HD.
Also, I can't save any changes to either copy of the same account because I get a message that says I already have an account with the same name. I still need to delete that stupid duplicate, but I'm afraid to mess with it until I know for sure that there's no way to get my emails back. Right now one mailbox preference window says it deletes downloaded messages after one week and another says it deletes after one month, but I don't want anything deleted from the server, but I can't change the settings, as noted.
Can I automatically backup my emails to a more secure location or change Mail to not erase things so easily?

The other messages are lost, then. If you don’t have a backup and FileSalvage cannot recover them, you’re left with whatever remains at the server. Unless you want to continue trying to recover deleted *.emlx files, proceed as follows.
For POP accounts, Mail uses a file within the account folder to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded. Deleting that file causes Mail to treat everything still on the server as if new and try to download it again:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Trash. Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded. Mail 2.x uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose.
Before opening Mail again, re-create the preferences file to get rid of the duplicate account settings without also deleting the account folder (ignore step 1, I’m just copying & pasting here):
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something else goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted after fixing the problem).
    4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    5. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.

  • Can I copy emails between an IMAP account and an Exchange account, via Apple Mail client?

If I have an IMAP account configured in my Apple Mail client profile, and then I also add an Exchange 2010 Server account to that same profile, can I use the Apple Mail client to copy folders and messages from my IMAP account, into my mail store on the Exchange Server account?

Pop mail accounts must be set up to 'leave messages on the server'.
    check this before using.
    * Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
    or
    * menu icon > Options > Account Settings > Server Settings for the mail account
select: 'leave messages on the server'
optional: select: 'for at most xx days' this will delete anything older than specified number of days select 'Until I delete them' when you delete an email it will be deleted off the server.
click on Ok to save settings.
Pop mail accounts only look at Inbox and download whatever has not been previously downloaded regardless of whether it has been read or not. They cannot access nor download from any other folder on the server.
If you wanted to download emails in other fodlers, you would have to move emails into the Inbox in order to download them and this may not be very practical in your situation.
What you can do is synchronize your IMAP folders to get a copy downloaded to your IMAP mail account.
Then go into 'offline' mode to stop any further synchronizing as synchronized folders do get updated.
MozBackup tool could now be used to backup the Profile as synchronising created mbox files which contain emails.
You can also do the following to get a copy outside of the IMAP mail account:
Create the same folders in 'Local Folders'.
Then right click on email and 'copy to' and select Local Folders and the folder you require.
Putting a copy in Local Folders means these emails are also on your computer and they are not influenced by anything you do in the IMAP folders.
You would need to backup emails in these folders.

  • I accidently deleted gmail messages on my computer. I use Apple mail. Can I retrieve them?

I use Gmail's IMAP setttings to download email to my computer. I have 3 separate email accounts on Apple Mail. Today, I accidently select all and deleted all 3k messages from my Apple Inbox. Once I did that, it automatically deleted all emails from this computer, and my other computer, along with my iphone and on gmail.com.
Is there a way to get those emails back?
I am in my Library folder and in the Mail folder, I see all 3 IMAP folders. And within those folders, there is a Messages folder that has a lot of emails that are not in my Apple Inbox? I went to gmail.com and took all the messages in my trash and moved it to Inbox. But these messages were only abot 150. I have no idea where all the 3k emails went??
Please help as I need these emails.
    Thanks

... I went to gmail.com and took all the messages in my trash and moved it to Inbox. But these messages were only abot 150.
Like you said Gmail deletes them after a specified number of days. If the messages you moved to gmail's Trash were older than that, gmail deleted them.
Log into your Gmail account on its website
    https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLoginAuth
If you have an "all mail" folder search for them there. If they're not present, they're gone.

On the left, you should have a list of keychains and categories. If not, Select Show Keychains from the View menu.
Select the login keychain and All Items in the Category.
In the search field, type something that will help find your  account keychains, like "gmail."
Select the keychain for your email account password and delete it.

  • Thousands of duplicate messages in Apple Mail

On MacBook Pro: OS 10.6.8, Mail v. 4.6, using gmail as a POP (not IMAP) account:
Messages are being duplicated by the thousands in Inbox, Sent, and Trash. This is happening on two MacBook Pros using a single email address. The more we delete the messages, the more appear! We're seeing 1700+ being downloaded as we are deleting from these mailboxes. It's as though we've set up a closed loop between these mailboxes, and the messages are being multiplied exponentially! The downloading stops if we go off-line, but our gmail server Inbox, Sent and Trash don't show unusual activity. When the messages are being downloaded by the hundreds, they are downloading much faster than our internet provider (Telus) can download, so for that reason I believe this is internal to Apple Mail. But how does that fit with the observation that the bizarre activity stops when we go offline?
The gmail account was activated only 2 weeks or so ago, and the problem has occurred only after then, and only with messages on gmail. I had been sending a copy of all outgoing messages to our address by adding a BCC: <our gmail address> so that my wife knows the content of the outgoing messages on her computer. Has this set up the loop?

  • How to remove thousands of duplicate emails in Apple Mail?

    Hi everybody,
I know there are a couple of discussions on the web already about this issue, but I cannot find one that clearly answers my question or solves my problem.
I'm working on Lion with Mail version 5.1 and I have a Gmail-account. I have been messing around a bit with IMAP and POP to re-collect all my Gmail-mails into Apple Mail, but now I see that almost every email has 1 to 5 or even more duplicates.
I've tried Andreas Amann's "Remove Duplicates" script, but whatever Mailbox I check, it doesn't work with Lion (yet). I get this error:
There is another script I tried, the one from this page: http://hints.macworld.com/comment.php?mode=view&cid=115625
It just makes my computer freak out, so not OK.
    A third script I found here: http://jollyroger.kicks-***.org/software/
I downloaded the "RemoveDuplicateMessages-Mail.zip"-file and installed it. It does say it finds and relocates duplicate mails from the Mailbox that is selected in Mail:
It relocates all the duplicates to a folder on my Desktop, called "Remove Duplicate Messages". I do find them there, but the mails in the selected Mailbox in Mail.app still show their duplicates! Even when I throw the files from the new folder on Desktop in the Trash and empty it, nothing changes. Not even after restarting Mail. Or my Mac.
So I'm still stuck with thousands of duplicates. Any help on this one?
    Thanks a lot,
    Alexander

I have found a very satisfactory solution to eliminating my duplicates in Apple Mail, which is to stop using it and switch to Thunderbird.
There's lots that I like better in Apple Mail, but Thunderbird is light-years more flexible in managing your email than is Apple Mail, because Thunderbird is an open platform with excellent Add-ons available, which include the nifty Remove Duplicate Messages: http://bit.ly/tbird-dups. It is stupid that Apple Mail hides duplicate messages in the background & won't allow users to search and destroy them. Frustrating!
As a prologue to that, you need the TB import export Add-on: http://bit.ly/tbirdimportexport
Managing my mail locally on my Mac was a huge project for me, involving integrating tens of thousands of emails. Mail was  from gmail, yahoo, and many years of Outlook PST files.
Now that the project is complete, I'm very happy with Thunderbird to manage my email archives. Though I actually would prefer the Lion Apple Mail interface for day to day use, it just isn't flexible enough.

  • Can't do search in Apple Mail

I have installed the update to fix Mail problems in Mavericks but still cannot do a search in Mail so cannot easily find specific messages.

What finally worked was to not use iCloud at all.
I've had 3 mailboxes, all gmail and none of them worked with the searchfield in Apple Mail, only in Spotlight. All fixes have been tried, envelope index reset, spotlight and all. No luck.
Only a complete zero-erase of the drive and a clean install of Mavericks made the search work and when I activated iCloud only that icloud mailbox was being searched nothing else.
So I did another zero-erase and clean install and setup the 3 google accounts directly. Never did I activate iCloud or made any part of it active. Search kept on working, after all updates, Office 2011 install and updates. Everything works fine, just not with iCloud.
This iCloud account does contain signatures which install themselves when you enable iCloud, so my guess is that those signatures or settings for Apple Mail cause some sort of malfunction and will prohibit Apple Mail from showing any other results than iCloud from that moment on.
Of course iCloud is pretty great, but in this case it does something with Apple Mail and limits searchresults...

  • 10.6 mail server shared IMAP folders not working on 10.9 apple mail

So we thought we upgrade a MBPro to 10.9 for some testing and low and behold, we already encountered a serious problem... well, at least for us.
We operate a 10.6.8 mail server which also hosts shared IMAP folders, to which team members subscribe on a per project basis.
Unfortunately, in Apple Mail v7.0 we can now no longer subscribe to individual IMAP folders it simply shows all and does not allow for individual folders to be deselected.
We realise it is early days, but it seems like a massive oversight to not detect such a bug....?

Unfortunately. the latest Apple Mail update (version 7.0, build 1822) still does not resolve this.
We are really hoping that this gets resolved soon, as the obivous direct problem is that Apple Mail 7.0 downloads all emails in Public IMAP folders will result in massive problems for all Macs with limited HD capacity, e.g. for all our laptop users with SSDs.
Btw. the same applies to KERIO 8.2 based solutions... http://forums.kerio.com/t/25890//
