Gmail IMAP *was* working with Apple Mail - days later it's stopped working.

Hi all,
I recently started my Gmail IMAP account over in Apple Mail and Mobile Mail in order to get it working properly across an iMac, iPhone and MBP. I followed Gmail's IMAP settings to the letter and the only thing I couldn't get working was for the Trash folder in Gmail's server to take the place of the Trash icon that Mail has. While Sent and Drafts were represented correctly once I did the "Use this Mailbox for..." thing, Trash never moved up there.
Turns out that when I've been deleting emails in Apple Mail, they haven't been deleting in the Gmail inbox. They just sit there, label free. In the meantime, the fact that the server Inbox is stuffed full of label-less emails isn't reflected in the other applications, and deleting an email in Apple Mail does not delete it from Mobile Mail. Similarly, mails I've moved in Apple Mail from the Inbox to the Gmail folders are not reflected in Mobile Mail, where they remain in the Inbox. Furthermore, on the server the mails appear to have the correct label for the folder I moved them to in Apple Mail, but on the server they are still in the Inbox.
I'm confused. The Gmail server inbox seems to be acting like All Mail now - in that I move something from the Inbox and into a Gmail folder using Apple Mail or Mobile Mail, but on the server they just stay in the Inbox and have a label added. They sit in several places at once. This is not what's supposed to happen!
Furthermore, now any emails I write in Apple Mail and Mobile Mail start saving drafts every few seconds then saving these as new emails in 'Drafts', and on the server saving them as multiple different versions of emails. If I send an email, I do not need to save every single variation every 10 seconds. Even if I don't send an email I don't need that. It wasn't doing this before, why has it started now?
I thought I'd got this all sorted but clearly I don't.
How do I achieve the following:
1) In Apple Mail and Mobile Mail, have an Inbox, Drafts, Sent and Trash box at the top, in which changes are reflected on the server and vice versa.
2) If I move an email in the above software from Inbox to a Gmail folder, the email on the server moves from Inbox to that folder, but remains in All Mail.
3) If I delete an email on the above software, it's moved from wherever it is to the Gmail Trash folder, where it's deleted after 30 days. It does NOT simply lose a label and remain in the Inbox or even in All Mail. If I delete something, I want it gone EVERYWHERE.
4) Don't save my Drafts every 10 seconds. Ever.
It can't be that hard to do this, can it?

Hmm, turns out my iMac Apple Mail has been resetting the Mailbox activity settings for some random reason which would explain the drafts problem. Wonder why?

  • Gmail suddenly not working with Apple Mail

My gmail suddenly is not working with Apple Mail.
It said my username or password is wrong, but it was okay this morning.
Nevertheless, I deleted my gmail account, and re-setup it using Internet Accounts from System Preference.
However, I got the beow message:
There was a problem setting up the Mail account. An unknown error occurred.
I am sure my username and password are correct because I just login it using Safari.
Does anyone know what the cause is?
    Please help~~~

Gmail not syncing in mac mail is a problem that is also in snow leopard since the new year.
OSX 10.6.8  is the highest OS that will run on an Intel Core 2 Duo.  Do not try to install Mavericks on this machine! I will install, but turns it into a dinosaur and many programs will no longer run.
I had an issue with Mac Mail not syncing with imap.gmail.com. and Safari not being able to find apple.com.
This was resolved by working with an upper level tech support member for several hours deleating particular system library files, uninstalling most addons, reseting system network settings and a whole lot more! (too much to name here)

  • Gmail IMAP account stopped working with Apple Mail

I have Leopard with 10.5.5, just updated it a few days ago.
I have used my gmail account for a few years with Apple mail with no real problems, but now today, I got errors about an invalid certificate, and a little exclimation point by my gmail inbox. I have an iPhone and another Mac that I was syncing all this to so I don't know something with one of those screwed it up, so I have removed all gmail accounts from everything and I'm just trying to set it back up on my main laptop, but i get an error when setting up the new IMAP account. Now it says logging into the IMAP server has failed and to check my username and password... I am following the instructions from the gmail site really close, and I've even reset my gmail password.
anybody know why it still isn't working?

  • Gmail no longer working with Apple Mail?

In the lasts 24 hours, without making changes to hardware or software, Mail has quit retrieving mail from my gmail accounts.
While I never receive any sort of warning about passwords or other issue, I simply get this:
And the "activity" window just stays that way... for hours with no result.  The Connection Doctor window:
The Church Email account is an old one that is no longer active... I just haven't removed it from my list.  But the "verify username and password" message is consistent... Strangely enough, down the same window - the SMTP connection works just fine. I can sent  mail from all of my gmail accounts using Mail... Considering that the user name/password is the same for both sending and receiving mail.. SOMETHING is funky with Apple Mail.
Anybody have a guess what to check? This is frustrating.

Did you change any setting in Mail? Did you change your gmail account password? Did you activate 2-step verification on your gmail account?
If you haven't done anything from above, maybe problem is with your network... Did you try to turn off your router for few minutes and then turn ON again?
Did you install any 3rd party security apps on your Mac? Did you enable system firewall? Do you use any proxy servers? Do you use VPN?
    There might be more questions...

  • Mail Message URLs like message: ... not working with Apple Mail any more

Links to certain messages are not working for me any more. For example if I drag a Mail to TextEdit Mac OS X creates a correct Link with the scheme: message:<... etc. Those links should open the linked message in Apple Mail. This seems broken for me.
Is there a way to reenable this functionality, via Terminal or so?
I have to admit that I used Sparrow for a short time. It looks like this stole the message-linking. Now I completely removed Sparrow, but it is still not working again with Apple Mail. Any suggestions?
    Kind regards,
    Markus

nope, same result with the flags, and now my eyes are burning from having used outlook mode instead of classic mode.

  • Problem with gmail not working with apple mail..

i guess perhaps that the problem could be within the google settings.
does anyone have another solution i could try?

  • GMail is not working with Apple Mail App: Login correct, says "no e-mails"?

    HI everyone,
I just switched from my iPhone 5 to a new iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.1.2. After I put the latest backup to the new device everything was set up fine. Unfortunately Google Mail doesn't work with the Apple Mail App any more.
I have two factor identification switched on and use the 16 digit long password which I set up with my Google account. The configuration details work (login, password, server details), the account is accepted, no notifications tell me that anything is wrong. The thing is, that the Apple Mail App doesn't show any mails. Also it's impossible to send any emails. The strange thing is, that the GMail App works fine.
I really tried everything: deleted the account setup, changed mail server from m.google.com to smtp.google.com, set up a new app specific password through two factor identification... no emails appear!
With my iPhone 5 I was a lucky user of push email, thanks to Microsoft ActiveSync. So I keep trying to configure the GMail account as an Exchange account (I know that Google switched off ActiveSync some time ago, until now everything worked fine with my iPhone 5, even push mail worked!).
Does anyone of you know how to solve the problem? I don't like the GMail App and really prefer using the iOS Mail App..
    Thanks in advance!

  • Gmail is not working with Apple Mail

I am trying to get my Gmail account working through IMAP in Apple Mail on the Mountain Lion operating system.  I have a brand new MacBook Pro, and it is frustrating to not have this working.
When I attempt to set up my account, I get the below message:
The Google IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
I know the server is working because I am able to get into Gmail everywhere else.  It sounds like other people may also have this problem.  Does anyone have a solution for this?

Have you use the correct outgoing server - smtp.mail.me.com and SSL is required. I would suggest removing the account and starting again, following the instructions applicable to Leopard in this page:

  • Gmail outgoing server issues with Apple Mail

    Hi,
I'm currently running OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, and trying to set up my gmail account in Apple Mail. I can recieve mail just fine, but am not able to send mail. for the outgoing server i typed "smtp.gmail.com." However I keep getting the message that says "cannot send message using the server smtp.gmail.com"

If anybody knows what the problem is or how to fix it, I'd be greatly appreciative. In addition, I do have this account being fed to my phone, to which it can send/receive mail just fine.
    Thanks

By default Mail should enter all the correct setting for Gmail.
    It's asking for authentication.
    Select to Edit SMTP settings.
Select your Gmail account from the list.
    Click on Advanced.
√ Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
Gmail likes port 465 but Apple default to all ports.
Make sure your password is entered.
Use the Connection doctor to test your settings. You should see green lights to show your receiving and sending settings are correct. Click on Show Details if you see a red light.

  • Gmail won't sync with apple mail

My apple mail no longer shows any past or current gmail message. I have tried deleting the account and making a new one and I have tried reinstalling OS X (I am currently running OS X 10.10.2 and running Mail 8.2). Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • SSL is not working with Apple mail 7.2 on Mac 10.9

    Hi,
I am trying to create an IMAP mail account on apple mail with SSL(TLS1.0) on port 993  with our own IMAP server . Connection Doctor promopt error meessage that "Either user name or password is wrong".
On wireshrk traces we found that the commuincation is done on TLS 1.0 and Handshake is properly handled between  client and server side.
Client is successfully able to send "CAPABILTY" and "LOGIN" request command to server and in-return server send successful response to the client. But After 60 seconds, Client sends a Alert message to close the session and send FIN ACK to the server . After terminating the existing sesssion client again sent a SYN request to the client and the same process repeats.

Do you have any antivirus software installed? if yes, uninstall it.
    Best.

Unfortunately from yesterday onwards the emails stopped downloading. This occurred suddenly, and I'm not sure why. This has happened once before, and I managed to fix it, but I'm not sure how i did it. Has anyone experience the same, or does anyone have a solution?

I've seen this problems posted all over the show with no replies, but in one forum the answer was given. Simply go to settings in Gmail, and switch off "enable POP" and save. Then switch it on again. And you can now receive emails.
