GMail Junk

I had always used Mail for my gMail account and rarely saw anything appear in Mail's JUNK folder. And if I did, I was able to mark it as NOT JUNK. However, since Mavericks, and even after the "fix" I get tons of messages in my JUNK folder (Mail's, NOT gMails). And worse still, even though they are in the junk folder they are not marked as junk so there is no way to mark them as junk....the junk button for these messages will first mark it as junk if you click on it.
I'm guessing these messages are from gMails spam folder but they are ending up in Mail's junk folder.
Anyone know how I can fix this? I spend way too much time selecting all the messages in there and deleting them.
Thanks.

As to the suggestion that you disable Mail's Junk filter, that's just stupid unless you only use Gmail, which I would consider stupid as well.
A lot of recommendations don't make sense. If you are having conflics then toggleing junk preferences might help determine what works best for you.
I get around any conflicts with Apple Mail junk filtering by using SpamSieve. After a brief setup where you train the filter, it works seemlessly in the background. I like that I can teach it what is spam and what is good. It also works in other email clients.

If you fully qualified the suggestion as you did here, it might have made a bit of sense. Just throwing out disabling the Junk Mail filter in Mail because Gmail recommends it is a stupid suggestion.

  • IPAD notifying on gmail junk folder iOS5

I have upgraded both my iphone and ipad to IOS 5 and have my gmail account setup the same way on both devices. However the ipad is showing notifications on any email in any folder including the spam folder while my iphone only notifies my on my inbox.  I cannot find any setting to set which folders to notify on, but having the ipad notify on any folder is flooding me with notifications.

    Woodie,
I know of no way to do this. Although Gmail functions much like an IMAP account when used with browser access, it only functions as a POP3 when used with an email client. The folders, other than the Inbox, are not accessible from the email client.
When you use the gmail smtp, your sent mail is not only stored on your Mac, in the Sent Messages folder in the account folder, but is also captured in the Sent folder on the Gmail servers, as are those you send while using the browser. But this Sent folder is not available to your email client.
Gmail seems to attract SPAM like a magnet -- I never really use my Gmail account for anything other than testing to help others. I rarely provide the address, except when testing something. Yet, if I check the SPAM folder of the Gmail account, via web access, it appears to have more messages than all my other accounts, that are POP, IMAP or .mac. These are clearly the result of a focused effort by SPAMMERS auto-generated all possible addresses for Gmail.

  • Mail vs. Gmail IMAP Junk Filtering?

The IMAP setup instructions for Gmail say that it is best to turn off any filtering in the Mail program, as the latter will attempt to download a lot of other stuff and create unwanted traffic.
However, I find that when I turn off junk filtering on Mail, the Gmail junk filter misses a lot of things the Mail junk filter seemed to catch before I went to Gmail IMAP. And, with Mail junk filtering turned off, I can't "train" it to catch junk mail that gets through the Gmail filter.
Is there any way to avoid the increased traffic I get from IMAP Gmail if I turn on my Mail junk filter?

Turn off junk mail filtering on GMail, don't use Mail and use the browser interface to GMail, get another email ISP, configure your own incoming rules for Mail to catch specific junk that GMail's filters miss.

  • (Junk-)Mail and setting up a new computer

    Hi all,
Naturally, I do not very often replace my computer, but every time I need to set up a new computer I run into this issue with Mail.app which annoys me.
I am a relatively heavy mail user (I have about 24.000 messages in my inbox on a gmail-account). I usually do not delete any mail, because I use my e-mail as my memory crutch for things past. However, if an e-mail is junk-mail, which I receive quite a bit, I delete it. To help me to sort the good from the bad, I use the Mail.app built-in junk mail control and generally, I am quite happy with it.
But every time I need to set up a computer from scratch, the following happens:
I set up Mail.app with my accounts.
Then I set the Junk Mail preferences to: "Enable junk mail filtering", "When junk mail arrives: Move it to the Junk mailbox". I have my Mailbox Behaviors set to: "Store junk messages on server".
Mail automatically moves tons of my legitimate old mail (this time more than 600 messages) to my gmail junk mail folder. That means I have to sift through the junk mail folder manually and pull out the legitimate mail while leaving the spam.
This is a big problem for me, because potentially I could lose important older e-mails. I have my accounts set up as IMAP, thus the new machine will screw up my older machines, the iPhone and even the native gmail web-interface.
My question: am I missing an "apply junk mail filter only to new incoming mail but leave my old mail alone"-button? Is there a work-around? Anyone else experiences this problem?
    All the best.

Hi, Gustavo, and welcome to the Community,
I know it will sound ridiculous, but if the new account was created using your e-mail address, change that account's password to take control of the account!  Remove any of your (or their) information - leave all profile settings as "blank" or "not specified."  I would recommend changing the passwords of your Skype account and your e-mail account as well, as proactive measures.
Then, please report this incident to Skype Customer Service.  Here is a link to the instruction on how to contact Skype Customer Service via their secure portal: Contact Customer Service
As you know you wish to contact Customer Service, skip past Step 2 of the instruction and proceed to Step 3, Continue Support Request.

  • Junk mail errors

    hi
Is there anything I can to do to stop Mail from reading/importing messages from Hotmail that must be taken from Hotmails server, i.e., they are not even in my Hotmail’s Junk folder and certainly not from the Inbox either.
I’ve tried the reset, unchecking Junk/ Trash , rebuild etc.
Mail also reads my Gmail junk and trash folder in error ongoing for last few weeks.
    any suggestions appreciated
    gus

I’ve looked at my -emails settings,  whats annoying is Mail is finding messages that Hotmail have not even sent to my Junk.   So bypassing even my e-mails settings!
Notifications is also not alerting me correctly.
I just hope the next upgrade of MAIL  will be able to filter messages better. It worked fine before I tried to be clever and played around...thought it might...
    cheers

  • How to deal with forum spam

    What is spam?
Occasionally, someone (usually a brand new poster) will come along and start submitting posts advertising a product or service. Spam can also be defined as the same message being posted over and over again.
We have guidelines in place to help prevent spam, as well as a number of measures that prevent certain keywords from being posted, but it isn’t fool proof and there are occasions when a spammer will go ahead and start posting about their product or service (which is usually completely unrelated to what the community is all about).
What happens when a moderator sees a spam post?
It’s very simple – we remove it as soon as possible. Spam posts tend to be a nuisance and the forum team have very clear and strict rules on what to do with spammers.
The forum managers (Sean and Stephanie) regularly review the kind of spam posts that manage to get through our filters, and continuously update the forum database with the patters and keywords that only spammers tend to use.
What happens if I see a post that I think is spam?
There will be times when a forum member will see a spam post before the moderator on duty has had a chance to remove it. If that forum member happens to be a Community Leader, they will usually help out by removing the offending post to a dedicated private area for the moderator to then deal with.
If any other forum member comes across this type of post, you can flag it to a moderator for review.
To do this, you need to click on the “Options” dropdown against the post and then click on “Report inappropriate content”, as shown below:

From what I remember, you needed Yahoo Plus (the "pay-for" service which allows POP access to email). Apparently you have this.
You will setup Mac Mail to be the junk mail filter, instead of relying on Yahoo to decipher what is considered junk mail. I am not sure what Yahoo offers for preferences. With Gmail, junk is kept on their servers, and everything received in the inbox can be fetched from Mac Mail.
Another thing to look into is IMAP access of your Yahoo account. This would allow you to sync all folders in your Yahoo account.

  • Maverick mail, new folders

why do I have so many new folders in mail? On my mac, there's junk (gmail), junk (icloud), junk (my pop account), plus I have a junkmail folder in each account folder, there's a deleted message folder in each account, and then there's also trash in each folder. What's the difference between trash and deleted messages? What's the folder in Gmail called "important"?! why is the gmail "in box" moved?  Why do I get hundreds of multiples of a message I've written saved in trash? It seems like it saves a copy every 2 seconds?

To my knowledge what shows up for POP3 accounts is what the ISP provides. You can't created local folders for POP 3 accounts since local POP3 accounts do not sync with the server, they just download (and deleted it specified). It sounds like your ISP has added a bulk mail folder and it now appears on your iPad. I do not know why they appear in only one account. Is there any difference (besides the address) in the accounts from the same ISP?

  • IMAP and Mail 3.5 not importing/moving messages to upper 'INBOX'

Within the last 3 months I finally got an iPhone. This event caused me to change my POP email accounts to IMAP. I have a total of 5 email accounts. They were all POP and are now all IMAP and have been this way for a couple of months.
2 of these accounts are Gmail accounts, one is a dot.mac, and 2 are with an independent web host that does support IMAP.
I have the inbox in the top left with a 'folder' for each account. I then have a list of all my folders I use for local filing. I then have a folder for each IMAP account at the bottom of the list. For the Gmail account there is a nesting of folders. And inside of each folder is typically a 'sent' and 'trash' folder.
The issue I am seeing with new mail coming into my computer is this.
New mail will come into the IMAP folder and SOMETIMES be put in the upper INBOX. There really is no rhyme nor reason as to why the messages do not show up in the top INBOX consistently. It appears to be doing this with all accounts.
One behavior I am able to replicate is this. If I dig into one of the bottom IMAP folders to find an email message that is unread and NOT in the upper INBOX and click on it to read it, THEN go to the upper INBOX the message will now show up as READ.
I can replicate this with every unread email that does not show up in the upper INBOX.
First, why show me the folders at the bottom? If they absolutely need to be there why will they not consistently show or 'move' the unread message into the upper INBOX?
Anyone have insight or suggestions on what I can do to resolve this?
I would like to NOT lose anything I have presently set in mail.
Let me know if you have any questions that can help explaining further.

Oh yes, sorry for the partial answer.
No, I there is no difference whether the emails have an attachment or not, and though a few days ago it seemed to be an on-and-off problem, it seems now that any new email (attachments or no), refuse to hit the INBOX folder.
As far as selections for keeping messages, I do break a bit from the Gmail mailbox behaviors, but only for junk mail, since I rarely use the google web app, and want to confirm junk mail is being labelled properly. All enabling junk mail does for me, basically, is give me a Junk folder in Mail.app that I can point Gmail/Junk to use. Apple Mail rarely picks up its own Junk since Gmail catches it first.
Drafts - stored on server (checked)
Notes - stored on server (checked)
Sent - stored on server (checked - only because I'll click on [Gmail]/sent mail and have it used as the Sent folder.)
Junk - stored on server (never causes copy problems or slowness, Gmail, as i said, catches junk/spam first). Delete after 1 day.
Trash - Move deleted messages to Trash mailbox (checked), Store Deleted messages on Server (checked). Permanently delete after 1 week.

  • Cannot delete salacious/phishing? email

Running Mavericks on a four-year old iMac.
I have totally failed in hunting down and deleting forever an email in my Mail folders.
    It’s from !!Female Secduction/[email protected]
    It is _always_ dated 2/17/14.
It appears in my Mail > Gmail Junk Folder.
I delete it from Mail >Junk.
I go to Mail > Trash, and there it is in my Mail > Trash > Gmail folder.
I delete it from that folder, quit Mail, launch Mail, then search for !!female seduction in All folders and nothing appears. Ditto for pdqno.
Guessing that it might be a phishing email, while it was present in my Junk mail folder, I ran ClamXAV on my Home folder hoping that ClamXAV would, as it has in the past, identify it as a phishing email and move it to the ClamXAV quarantine folder.  It did not.
In the time it took me to write the above, this same email re-appeared in my Mail > Gmail > Junk folder and, BTW, no notification appeared in Notifications, as is the norm, that a new email had been received.
Any ideas of how to hunt down and delete this email forever?  And why is it always dated2/17/14?
    Many thanks

The latest version of ClamXav will not move e-mail unless you force it to.
Never use ClamXav (or any other A-V software) to move (quarantine) or delete e-mail. It will corrupt the mailbox index which could cause loss of other e-mail and other issues with functions such as searching. It may also leave the original e-mail on your ISP's e-mail server and will be re-downloaded to your hard drive the next time you check for new mail.

  • Is there any way to have mail in Gmail's Spam folder show up in Junk?

I use Gmail IMAP and Apple Mail 4.2. One thing I find frustrating is that if I am trying to keep an eye on my spam / junk for wayward messages (as we all should do from time to time) I have to check 2 folders.
Is there any way to set it up so mail that is tagged as spam by gmail goes to the Junk folder in apple mail.
I know you can setup gmails spam folder to be the Junk - but I want the reverse - so the Junk folder up by my Inbox houses all the junk & spam.
This used to work - does not seem to anymore - or I'm missing something.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Stop IMAP junk GMail?

My question is simple: Is there ANY way to configure Apple Mail or GMail such that I don't have to see all the junk mail that GMail puts in the Spam mailbox? Any solution is welcome--either if GMail could automatically and immediately delete all incoming spam, or Apple Mail could simply not show the Spam folder.
I'm tired of having to manually delete dozens of spam messages every few hours. I suppose I could let the accumulate in the Spam folder, but I also hate seeing Apple Mail report the incoming mail.

  • Turning on "Junk Mail Filtering" Crashes Mail when using GMAIL IMAP

So I thought I had my Gmail IMAP satisfactorily set up through Mail, then I turned on Junk Mail filtering through preferences. Immedaitely Gmail stopped synchronizing (I still can't get it to sync) and Mail starts hanging on basic tasks and will not quit properly. In fact, I have had to "Force Quit" the application ever since changing this status.
    Anyone else having this issue?

I have now confirmed that when I turn Junk Mail filtering off via preferences, Gmail will start syncing again and the application will quit properly.

  • Can I get the junk filter to ignore Gmail's 'spam' folder?

I could put the junk into the 'spam' folder, but having two categories is really useful. Gmail picks up penile enlargement and mail order brides, while 'junk' has things that require decision. Can I stop 'junk' looking in 'spam'?

  • Junk and Trash mailboxes from Gmail disappeared on Mac Mail--any ideas?

Junk and Trash mailboxes from Gmail disappeared on Mac Mail--any ideas?
Under Mailboxes in Mac Mail, I used to see Inbox (along with sub-Inboxes for each account, all of which are still there), VIPs (still there), Sent (still there), Drafts, Junk and Trash, all of which are missing, without me making ANY changes anywhere, either on Mac Mail or Gmail.
Any ideas ... or other people experiencing same issue?  (Happened in my wife's account and I just assumed the kids deleted something, but then I went to my account where the kids never are and I found the same issue.)

Do you mean that they are not listed under Gmail's header at the bottom of the Mailbox List or that they don't exist in the Unified Mailboxes at the top?
If they are not in the unified mailboxes, check down under Gmail and vice versa. If they are at the bottom under Gmail, select each separately and go to the Use Mailbox for command in the Mailbox menu. Set each one to what they are supposed to be, ie Trash, Junk, Sent, Drafts.
If they don't appear anywhere, log into Google's email website, go to Settings, click on the Labels tab and make sure those mailboxes are set to show in IMAP.
Finally, if they are IMAP accounts, just delete the accounts from Mail then re-add them. If you have a lot of email, it will take a while to synchronize, but it should recover those foldrs. If you are using POP, I'm not exactly sure how to save the old email, but I would assume Google is already doing that for you.

  • How can I delete junk mail from Gmail

This is driving me crazy. I have defined my Gmail account as IMAP in my Mail app. However there is a mailbox with the name All Mail but no Inbox. How can I just see valid messages and how can I mark messages as junk and remove them from All Messages and never see any messages from these junk senders again? For example JC Penney sends about one message a day and I have to manually delete them. I've looked at the Gmail settings via webmail and haven't found a way to get rid of them.

You could enable Mail's filter as well if you want.  If you do so, I suggest you tell Mail to use Gmail's Spam folder as Mail's Junk folder.  Do this by selecting the Gmail Spam folder, then go to the mail menu bar under the "Mailbox" menu "Use This Mailbox For" -> "Junk".  This way, when you mark a mail as junk within Apple Mail, it will move to the Gmail spam folder, thus telling Gmail it is spam.
Alternatively, you could use Rules to kick out some of those mail messages you routinely get particularly if they always come from the same e-mail or have the similar subjects.
