GMAIL + Mail APP = sign in problem

I keep getting mail app cannot connect to gmail after I input my password (multiple times). I had the mail app working with gmail and then all of the sudden it stopped. I know its the correct login and password because I can access it on gmail.com. What can I do?

  • Horrible gmail mail.app problem

    Hi guys.
I use mail.app 2.1.3 to check my gmail account (via POP). Lately, I have been having three nasty problems, which may or may not be related. Note that I have zero rules set in mail.app and do not have the spam filter turned on. I am using the spam filter in gmail.
    1. I get mail, I can see it in my gmail box, but it doesn't come into mail.app. This happens about .1% of the time, or one mail every two days. There's one example where it has happened three times from the same person, but other than that it appears to be random. Since I don't look on the web for my mail and since I get a ton of mail, this is a huge problem.
    2. Mail can be delayed for one or two days. For example, a friend also has gmail and we're both signed up with an online service (Basecamp). Sometimes she'll get a notification a full day before me.
    3. I don't get mail. I can chronicle mail people have said they've sent me, I can see it in their out box, and it's not in my gmail box, spam or otherwise, based on doing straightforward searches within both my gmail and my mail.app.
By the gods of Wozniak, all help is welcome!
    thanks
    seth

    Hi Seth.
Do you access this mail account from more than one computer or device? Gmail doesn’t let the same message to be downloaded more than once via POP...
As for messages not even arriving at the server or being delayed, well, that’s clearly a server issue that has nothing to do with Mail. Looking at the timestamps in the full headers of the messages that arrive late may allow you to determine which server causes the delay...

  • Quoting/threading phenomena in mail.app -- due to problems in incoming messages?

    Folks:
    Mail 5.1 on MacOS 10.7.x
I began using Mail.app when I installed 10.7, shortly after the initial release.
No problems with respect to unformatted email or replying to short, trivial length formatted message.  For complex, on-going discussions  I feel that consistent and reliable quoting and threading behavior are essential.   But that is not happening in some cases. I'd like to figure out why, and what I might do to fix the issue.
(Note:  I do not want to get into a discussion here of formatted versus unformatted email.  Both have their pros and cons. Nor do I want to spend a lot of time debating this issue with my correspondents.  As a matter of courtesy, I set Mail.app to respond using the same message format as the original message.)
When I reply to a formatted email,  I notice that mail.app sometimes draws a dark grey box --with rounded corners-- around one or more incoming paragraphs, placing a circled "X"  "close icon" at the upper left.   I don't get it.  To what does this correspond?  Why does mail.app mark-off this text and offer a "close icon"?   As far as I know I'm not doing anything that implies I might want to delete the text.
(Note:  Rummaging around in the corresponding message source, it seems that these boxes correspond to blockquoted text in the received message.)
Editing within one of these boxes is really unpredictable.  Sometimes I can select an insertion point and insert a line-break, in preparation of replying to the text just above.  Sometimes nothing happens. Sometimes I can select text, and cut it. Sometimes nothing happens at all to the selected text.
Mail.app commonly doesn't  correctly increase the quoting level in such paragraphs.  Using
        Format> Quote Level>Increase
to maintain threading history manually is fairly easy since I've defined a function-key shortcut, which works some of the time -- but  the effect of this command is unpredictable.  Sometimes this command deletes the selected text entirely.  (Grrrrrr!)  The workaround I've found is to select smaller chunks of text.  In such cases, this command generally works correctly.
Meanwhile, messages from exactly one person --who uses gmail exclusively-- are displayed in a completely unique threaded format by mail.app.  The entire short history of 5 messages from him are displayed on multiple virtual sheets in one message window, with the latest first.    In one view, clicking on the "see more" link at the bottom of his messages unleashes a cool-looking accordion opening effect and displays my part of the thread. (I guess.  I don't totally understand this display concept.  But it looks very cool and seems to handle quoting and threading pretty well.)
    What's going on?
My best guess is that mail.app is struggling with "inconsistencies" in the incoming messages from different people using various email clients.  I seem to recall reading that email tech specs  are a hodgepodge of evolving and contradictory  standards. Is that correct?   Is that the root of my issue?
Many of my correspondents are non-tekkies and/or non-affluent, and they use whatever email client they can afford.  Some could be using really old email clients.  That doesn't help, right?  Are blockquotes a really archaic formatting measure?
When these problems occur, they can cost me a lot of time and trouble.  It's really distracting to have to deal with portions of the incoming message disappear.
I don't think it is practical to persuade my correspondents to upgrade their email clients.  Some of them have trouble simply setting the preferences to support quoting.   Threading is a difficult concept for a few.
Any suggestions?   Any mail.app preference settings I might try adjusting?  Any add-ins?   Is it possible to tell Mail.app "interpret all incoming blockquotes tags as simple breaks" or strip them entirely?  Or ...?
    TIA

    haavee:
Thanks for your reply on this thread.
And thanks for the confirmation:  Yes, often difficult, and completely unworkable in some cases.
To my surprise, I've been able to find very few people reporting similiar observations.  Very little about this issue at all on the web.
I looked for command-key variations on Format --> Make Plain Text, hoping for a block action, but none I tried was any different.
Here is my current view of the issue:
    • For formatted messages, each email client operates differently.  If there is a standard it seems to be no more robust than "use simple HTML for formatted messages".
    • The "can't insert" issue, as well as those mysterious rectangle-surrounded blocks, seems very correlated with the presence of html <div> sections in the message.  It is awkward to experiment, so I've only done a limited amount.  My observations so far:
-- I don't think you can insert text anywhere "inside" a <div>, and mail.app seems to treat <div> as a "sticky" attribute -- e.g/ very difficult/impossible to remove without deleting the text inside.  The copy-style method doesn't seem to affect <div> tags.
-- Based on one case, it appears that message bodies composed of back-to-back <div> sections are impervious to inserts anywhere. (The email client used by one particular person with whom I've corresponded seems to build messages out of --you guessed it-- back-to-back <div> sections. Putting on my HTML coders hat -- I cannot see any sense at all in doing this. Smells to me like a kludge/hack, as you prefer.)
    • What about an applicable mail.app add-in?  I can find mail.app add-ins, but it seems the  mail.app tech info (API) isn't public, so those that exist are based on guesswork about how it works. This means that add-ins must be re-tooled possibly for each new version of mail.app. Altogether, not encouraging for add-in developers. And, yes, consistent with that the range of functionality I've seen is rather limited.  So, I've given up looking in the add-in category.
    • Applescript has commands for controlling mail.app generally, but I didn't see anything approaching the level of function necessary to remove <divs> by global search-and-replace. (I'm far from an Applescript expert, so it is very possible I missed something.) Nor did I see any general command such as Clean up dodgy HTML in message.  (I can dream!)
The only bit of progress I've had is finding TextSoap: http://www.unmarked.com/textsoap/ which may have promise. But I have had no time to evaluate it and it may be a month or so before I get a chance to check it out.
Looking at the upper right of the window in which I'm composing this message, there's a button "HTML" that lets me see --and edit-- the underlying HTML. On first glance, there's not enough functionality to, say, efficiently clean up all insert-resistant blocks in a message, but it looks practical to clean up individual blocks, and maybe that's all it would take.    Though I imagine that the user base for these forums is not very different from that of mail.app, I'm guessing adding this function to mail.app isn't even a dim possibity.  Oh, well...
I note you are happy with your solution, so I'll try see if a variation of it might help me.
    Thanks,
    h.2

  • What's wrong with Gmail & Mail.app (IMAP)

I recently set up Mail.app for Gmail using IMAP. Since then I've noticed that my inbox in Mail.app and in Gmail on the web is always out of sync. For example, I have one message listed in my inbox in Mail.app right now, and there are eight still in the inbox in Gmail. Also, I have several folders in Mail.app (corresponding to labels in Gmail). When I move a message from the inbox in Mail.app to one of these folders, and then try searching for it 30 minutes later, it doesn't appear in the folder or anywhere in Mail.app. If I go to Gmail on the web an search for it, however, it shows up there.
The irony of it all is that I finally decided not to renew my MobileMe subscription and switch over to Gmail. I'm beginning to regret that decision.
Is anyone else having these problems? If not, maybe it has something to do with my configuration?

Back in 2006 I've worked in a minor ISP hosting a few hundreds of e-mails and dealing with SMTP communication between servers... And often I had to analyse logs to see what has gone wrong, and it was never the same issue.
Each big company have their own SMTP standards, built on top THE SMTP standard, to solve their own issues in their own ways, and sometimes communication between them just break for whatever reason. It's something being constantly updated and it's hard to keep track of things.
I'm just supporting *Jon Markle*'s words on this issue - it is pretty random and there's no single point at fault to blame.

  • IMAP/Gmail/Mail.app strangeness: what am I doing wrong?

I have two IMAP accounts on Gmail servers, one through my university and the other being my personal domain with Dreamhost.
When mail is received on both accounts, it does not always go into the respective inboxes. Rather, it is directed to the respective "All Mail" folders, both in Mail.app and the Gmail web client. Therefore, most new mail does not actually register as new mail, and I receive neither visual indication of new mail from the Dock icon, nor the audio indication of the new mail sound.
Aside from enabling IMAP access for both accounts, I have made no changes to the default Gmail configurations. I haven't added any folders that could have caused this, and I'm not using any smart folders in Mail.app. I'm using the standard mailbox configurations in Mail.app, with the default Gmail IMAP and SMTP servers and password auth.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro, all of a sudden the password started rejecting and I cannot use that gmail account.  This appears to be a bug.  The quick fix was to set up another gmail account and forward the mail from the old gmail account to the new gmail account that works with the IMAP service.  This way the mail from the gmail account with the rejected password will still come through and appear in MAIL.

  • Hotmail Gmail Mail.app

If I make a Gmail account under my Hotmail adress. *******@live.nl
Could I use the Gmail client to recieve the Hotmail on my Mail.app?
My Gmail adress would be the same as my hotmail. So I don't make a @gmail.com account.

You are confusing setting up a Google account with setting up a GMail account. Those are two separate altough related things. When you setup a Google account you are offered the option of using a GMail account or another email account as your Google logon ID. Having a Google account does not mean you have a GMail account. That as a separate step.
Once you have setup a GMail account, it can be configured to "fetch" messages from other POP3 email accounts you may own. When GMail fetches a message from another mailbox, that message is deleted from the original mailbox but will appear in your GMail Inbox as GMail. An option in GMail is then replying to a message fetched from another account, GMail will reply from the same account the message was originally sent to. Hotmail is not a POP3 protocol. A lot of people use this feature of GMail to make their POP3 accounts function more like IMAP.
I don't have a Hotmail account to test with, but I do not think GMail is going to solve your problem. Additionally GMail is compatible with IMAP, but it is not fully compliant with the IMAP standard. If you are accustomed to true IMAP you may find GMail's pseudo IMAP somewaht annoying. I know that I do.
Once again I believe you are better off using Hotmail directly rather than attempting to use it indirectly via GMail. I don't even know if GMail can fetch hotmail. I beleive your best solution is figuring out why your are having problems with GMail. So let me rephrase my previous question. You say you cannot get Hotmail to work in Mail. What happens when you setup a Hotmail account in Mail? Specifically what is it doing or not doing?

  • Mail App 6.5 problems

    Hello,
Well, I have receiving and sending emails correctly since I bought my mac but recently Mail App 6.5 freezes on launch, I still can move the mail window but the menu bar and the app itself don't work and I have been forcing the exit every time.
I also tried deleting an "Envelope file" or something like that in Mail Library (bloggers advices) but didn't solve the problem.
How can I run the app normally again?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Mail.app 8 / Yosemite problem attaching another e-mail

When using the option forward as attachement on Mail.app Yosemite the attachment lose the .eml or .emlx and it's not easy to open when receiving it.
It always worked fine until OS X Mavericks, but it's not.
Dows anyone know how to fix it?

Have you tried closing the Mail app completely ? From the home screen double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
You could also then try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Gmail & mail app failure

Not sure if the switch over to "Me" is effecting mail, but for the past 3 days my Gmail IMAP hasn't worked on the mail application. It won't go online and I keep getting error messages. It's worked fine for years until the last 3 days.
Any hint as to what might be going on?

    Error reads:
    "Connection Failed:
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account "Gmail" or try again.
The server error encountered was: Invalid credentials (Failure)"
Iv tried about anything I can think of to get around this. Iv had the same accounts for years and never a problem. I even went in took out the Gmail account in "mail" and then put it back. Same problem. Everything is right even on the Gmail end so no clue to why it just happened to stop. With MobileMe starting tomorrow I just wondered if something was going on.
    Puzzled....

  • Yosemite Mail still has sync problems with Gmail - any solutions?

I notice that Yosemite Mail still has sync problems with Gmail. After running for some hours, I noticed there were 6 emails in my Gmail account that had not synced over the past hour.
In the meanwhile, for safety's sake (don't want to miss emails!) I'm back to Mailplane. But I wonder if anybody knows of a solution to this long term problem first introduced in Mavericks. Works fine in iOS Mail though.
    Thanks,
    doug

I don't think we'll ever have a "best of both worlds" Doug. I've used Gmail since the week it launched the first beta in 2004, and it's always been a bit of a love-hate relationship for me (mostly love). With the demise of the Google Notifier for Mac, I went with Mailplane, but even it has problems. Like when I see my iPhone update with new mail and I'm looking at Mailplane and it won't update at times with even a forced refresh. I often have to close/reopen it to see new messages. But, it's hard to live without my Google Calendar only a tab click away, one of the primary reasons I use Mailplane, that plus changing view zoom sticks with Mailplane and won't with Gmail.
For years I've thought Gmail labels were the perfect filing solution, but over the past few weeks I've been analyzing just how much I really use that feature, and for me...it's not all that much. I think I could simplify my life by putting everything into appropriate folders (as in all other email apps). Apple doesn't realize just how much money they're losing by not allowing people to use private domains with iCloud mail...which I would do in a heartbeat just because it would work perfectly with Mail.app. I would pay even more than I currently pay Google for this solution with Google Apps Business. So, I'm actually on the verge of moving my private domain to the best email service I can find and then using it with Mail.app. The problem here, of course, is I'll lose the best spam control on the planet (Gmail). So, as you say, there simply is not a "best" solution for all these things. I'll at least try a new email service first with some other domain to see how I like it before moving my primary email.
Lastly, the other thing that incenses me is synching of flags between iOS and Apple Mail. It works fine between Gmail and iOS Mail, since all I care about is whether a message is starred/flagged or not.  But using Apple Mail, when I flag a message it will not show as flagged in their own iOS Mail, which is incomprehensible, given they built both apps.
If you find a great solution or discover anything new...please post it here, Doug. Thanks.

  • Please help with setting up native mail app using Gmail with alternate email address

I have an alternative email address setup such as [email protected] configured to use with my online Gmail account.  In the online account, I use the alternate email services smtp server so emails are sent correctly from that alias.
Is there a way to setup the native mail app to use Gmail for mail, contacts, and calendar and use an alternate email address as the sender?  Right now I am syncing contacts and the calendar through the native mail app and using the Gmail mail app for my email.  It allows you to select from all of the emails setup on the Gmail account.
But for simplicity sake, I would like to consolidate to the native email app for all of my accounts - I also have an Exchange based work account.
