Gmail POP retrieval is hit or miss

Since 10.4.7 Mail.app is not downloading all my unread Gmail in it's inbox. Sometimes it does.. sometimes not.
I have checked all my settings in Mail.app and they are correct.
Furthermore... If I am using Gmail's web client and send a message from it... the sent message shows up in Mail.app's inbox the next time it downloads pop mail from Gmail.
Anybody else???? Ideas?

The downloading problem is expected behavior if you check your Gmail account from more that one computer, and the sending behavior is expected behavior regardless. Gmail POP access does not work as a normal POP mail server should. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server, and no longer available to either the same or any other mail client.
2. To make already downloaded Gmail messages available for POP access again, you must log into your Gmail account with a web browser and re-enable POP downloading for all your messages, which will cause everything (and I mean everything) still there to be downloaded again.
3. Any Remove copy from server account settings in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on the server. The reason is that, after being downloaded, those messages are no longer available to any mail client, not even to the same client that has just downloaded them, not even for deleting them or checking whether they are still there.
4. Messages created and sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were incoming messages. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent -- as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one mail client, that is.
5. Messages created and sent using a POP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in 4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. They would, however, be downloaded if Gmail settings were changed as described in 2 above.

  • Can't add Gmail (POP) accounts to Apple Mail

I noticed a day before the 10.5.7 update that my existing gmail accounts in Mail suddenly stopped retrieving mail, giving "a server not responding" message. So I delete the accounts and try to add again. And again, pop server not responding. This was all on 10.5.6 mind you, and yes all my settings are correct under google settings.
10.5.7 was released and I seen in the notes that there was a problem with gmail and Apple Mail in the past (no problems for me but I only used POP). So, like always, I repair disk permissions, download the full combo update and install. After install, like always, I repair disk permissions again before doing anything else.
Same thing. Can't add my POP gmail accounts to Apple Mail. POP server not responding

I have just experienced the same issue with a gmail account I setup in Mail when I bought my first Macbook 2 years ago. I've never had any problems with the gmail POP server before, until last night July 26th 09. Then suddenly a couple of minutes after successfully retrieving the emails as usual, it tried again and failed, asking for the password. I entered the password, but still came back saying POP server not responding.
I did some updates yesterday, but nothing more than the one for the pro apps. I'm completely up to date with all Leopard updates. Also I've double checked that all is working with my gmail account and settings; no change in settings or password were made.
Do I need to delete the account in Mail and recreate it from scratch, then, is that the only answer when this error seems to occur out of the blue?

  • Removing GMAIL POP Account and Replacing with IMAP Account

Because I want to sync my Gmail account on two Macs and discovered that IMAP is better at this than POP, I want to delete my Gmail POP account and add an IMAP account. Mail > Preferences indicates that all received mail will be deleted as well. Since I want to keep received emails, should I move them to a folder in On My Mac? I don't see where emails are stored on the hard drive, so until I know that I'll be able to retrieve them, I don't want to delete the POP account.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Nick,
You may find that all these messages also exist on the Gmail server, and if so they will sync with the IMAP access. The account folder and the Inbox, etc, can be found at Home/Library/Mail in a folder beginning with POP.
You can leave the POP account, and only disable it in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced until you check or transfer the info.

  • Gmail - POP

I don't know if people are having the same issues as me but my emails have not been coming in under Gmail POP with the new iPhone firmware upgrade. Normally I would get all messages no matter if I read them in a different computer but now I'd be lucky if I get any.
I've tried deleting and creating the account again and it doesn't fix the issue. My other email accounts are behaving normally.

For IMAP. Just hit the GMAIL button under "add account." It will autoconfigure itself
    For POP:
    - select "Other"
    - name: whatever you want to be addressed
    - address: [email protected]
    - description: use what you wish
    Under Incoming Mail Server
    - host name: pop.gmail.com
    Outgoing Mail Server
    - host name: smtp.gmail.com
Under Advance: make sure these are enabled
    - both incoming and outgoing: turn SSL ON
    - authentication for both: password
    - incoming server port: 995
    - outgoing server port: 587

  • 7.2.0.103 - quotes are hit-or-miss

Ever since the UI overhaul, quoting in skype is rather hit or miss. I can select text from a message, ctrl+c, then ctrl+v, and about 3/4 of the time it will paste as plain text, even though I have ensured that my setting in options is to paste as a quote.
Additionally, if I select text, then right-click and choose copy selection, then right-click the text input box and try to paste, about half the time, "paste as quote" isn't an option, and I'll need to go try again to copy the text to be able to quote it. I've noticed that right-click copying seems to work more often.
tl;dr copying text doesn't always quote, but it should be.

The Favorites group will be shown when you add at least one contact to the Favorites list.
In order to display other Contact Groups, press the dropdown arrow next to the ALL button, which is placed at the very top of the CONTACTS list.

  • Bridge CS5 - Adding metadata to RAW files is hit and miss

Can someone help me??? Bridge CS5 will only add the metadata I enter to the files it feels like doing. It is hit and miss. Some files will add it, and other files will get the message "There was an error writing metadata to 100824_Banks_06.NEF". It will go through my whole folder of RAW files, then other times it will allow one or two of the files to get the information. I am going crazy! Is this a preference setting issue, or what?

Bridge is the weakest of all Adobe applications I use.  It suffers from the same issues since its first release, when we were told to forgive the teething problems of any version 1 application.  Now it's in version 4.x.
I actually spent most of the last two days wrestling with Bridge, and getty pretty annoyed with it. The "Error writing metadata" bug caused me no end of problems in trying to reorganise my keywording of 20,000 photos, and turning the air blue in the process.
I agree that Bridge seems to be the poor relation in the Creative Suite. I call it the Less Glamourous Sister. It needs to be 64-bit to host 64-bit Camera Raw, and it needs to manage resources faster and more efficiently.
I've spent a fair amount of time watching Bridge's activity with a resources monitor utility, and it's a very busy lady. It seems to poll several drives every second or two, accessing the registry, disk-based settings and library files regularly too, even when it appears to be doing nothing. And, even though I had indexed and cached my whole 20,000 photo collection, Bridge insists on recreating some thumbnails and previews at random intervals.*
I decided that the anti-virus software suggestion was a red herring in my case (I now realise this is the Mac forum anyway). Photos which gave an error became subsequently locked for several minutes, and I had to edit the sidecar files by hand. In the end, I worked out that, even though there is no on-screen indication of activity, Bridge is quietly working its way through every item in the Content pane, and it is this action which seems to coincide with the Metadata Error. Wait for it to end, and chances are much reduced, but not fully removed.
Oh, and Adobe's customer treatment might be debatable, but that helpful customer you quoted was a regular abuser of other forum users, so I like to see a silver lining from that post.

When you say hit and miss do you mean sometimes you print a whole document with no problems, or do you mean each document has problems? This is from HP's website for your printer:
Your sig says 10.6.7 but your message says 10.7. So if it's really Lion, this printer isn't officially supported. Elsewhere on HP's site it says updated drivers will be available on your Mac via Software Update. Have you run that recently?

  • Screen sharing is hit or miss

Ever since replacing my 2007 iMac with a new Mac Mini in Dec. 2012, the ability to share the Mini's screen from my 2011 MBP is a hit or miss, same goes for rmounting the disk in the Mini.  I cannot recall this ever happening with the iMac.
I usually have to restart the Mini to be able to get the sharing work again, but this is very inconvenient.  I might as well go to the Mini.  I have assured all sharing settings are correct, obviously since it will work sometimes.
Any thought on how to make the remote connections more reliable?  Wifi is very strong in the home.  This happens 80 feet away or two feet away from router which is next to Mini.
    TIA

I did not check IPs before restarting Mini.  Connection is OK now, and IPs match now that screen share is working.  I will test IP match next time sharing fails.

  • Both inbox and outbox from Gmail ends up in my gmail/pop/mail inbox

Both inbox and outbox from Gmail ends up in my gmail/pop/mail inbox; how to resolve?
    - So: the mail I send via gmail comes also in my inbox of mail in which I use the gmail pop account.
    Please help!

This is a Gmail issue. Gmail POP access doesn’t work like a normal POP mail server would. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
    1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server (but not as read on the web), and no longer available to either the same or any other POP mail client.
    2. To make already downloaded messages available for POP access again, you must go to Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP page, select Enable POP for all mail, and click Save Changes, which causes everything (and I mean everything) still on the server to be downloaded again.
    3. The Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on Gmail’s server. Gmail ignores any requests to delete messages from the server made by a POP client. What happens to the messages on the server after a POP client has downloaded them is determined by Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP > When messages are accessed with POP setting alone. In the case of Gmail (and only in that case), I recommend turning OFF Remove copy from server in Mail, so that Mail doesn’t even try to remove any messages from the server, regardless of whether you do actually want already downloaded messages to be removed from the server after some time or not.
    4. Messages sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were received messages. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent — as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one POP mail client, that is. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want.
    5. Messages sent using a POP/SMTP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in #4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. Since they’re on the server nonetheless, already sent messages would be downloaded together with all the other messages on the server if proceeding as described in #2.
    6. A particular case of #5 are messages sent to yourself. Instead of putting a copy of the sent message in the server’s Inbox and making it available for download, both the sent and the “received” message on the server are actually one and the same, and hence, cannot be downloaded via POP for the reason explained in #5.
    7. Gmail allows POP accounts to be set up in a special way that avoids some of these issues while introducing others. If you only need POP access to the last 30 days of mail, you can configure Mail in “recent mode”, as described in How should I use POP on mobile or multiple devices?, i.e. by typing “recent:” (including the colon but not the quotes) at the beginning of the User Name field (not in the Email Address field) in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information. Configuring the account this way would allow Mail to download messages marked by Gmail as already downloaded (and download messages sent to yourself in particular), but it would also cause all sent messages (not just messages sent to yourself or through webmail) to be downloaded as if they were received messages.

  • MSI Deployment Hit or Miss

I have a question in regards to deploying MSI packages via GPO.  I am using Server 2012, and trying to automate a lot of administrative installation work.  I have had success with some software installations using Computer config > Software
Installation feature in GPMC, but it seems to be hit or miss.
I have successfully installed well known published apps such as Chrome, Adobe, and Anti Virus.  However, if I try to use third party MSI's or EXE to MSI converters - I have no luck.
Are there elements to the MSI packages that are a must that I'm missing?  Unfortunately, there are a lot of apps I want to automate but are only in the form of .EXE such as FireFox.
Also, are there any well known tools to help on this?
    Thanks!

    For Firefox:
    http://www.frontmotion.com/FMFirefoxCE/download_fmfirefoxce.htm
For others: As Joseph pointed out, to deploy MSI with GPO the MSI must
install silently. Some only do this when special parameters are provided
(I remember iTunes requiring STANDALONE=1 to install from the MSI).
Since you cannot provide parameters in GPO, you need a MSI editor (like
Orca from the Office resource kit).
http://www.msfn.org/ has some guidance on unattended installations for
    third party products.

  • Face detection hit and miss

I am finding this feature to be very hit and miss. I have a lot of folders with full-on, well-exposed face shots that LR is not picking up faces in, and other folders with partial faces that are obscured, dark, or over blown that it is picking out faces in. Then there were the random squiggles of grass that LR thought was my very bald brother...
There doesn't seem to be a way to get it to re-check folders, and "find similar faces" doesn't seem to do anything but look for faces I've already confirmed - the naming makes it seem like if you say, "Hey, here's a face to look for," it would go back through the folder/catalog and look for similar faces that weren't already picked out.
It's got potential, but in its current state, I'm going to have to go through and manually choose faces in thousands of photos that LR theoretically should be picking out. Bummer.
    Keep working on it, Adobe.

My experience so far with LRs face detection is a little disappointing as well.
I understand that machine face recognition has severe limits. Persons age, change in expression, glasses, hats... not to speak of angle of shooting, light conditions etc etc. Plus it needs to be computationally feasible.
And yet when I started to name a person, particularly after having tagged some childhood pictures, the suggestions started to get very very odd, including faces from the opposite sex, some graphic ornaments on a wall, and ancient Greek statues.
And then going through a large collection (again!), with thousands of clicks...
Adding to the disappointment: Although LR CC writes face data to XMP-mwg-rs tags (jay!), it does NOT read and process existing XMP-mwg-rs written by other software (Nooooooo!).
Thousands and thousands clicks to go, again...

  • Gmail pop account wont send mail

I set up a gmail account sucessfully, recieving mail was fine but when it came to sending i kept getting a message saying 'port 465 has been timed out'. I changed the port number a few different times to recommended ports but with no avail. I decided to delete this account and try setting up again as i may have done something wrong. I now can't recieve or send mail.
What is the correct port for a Gmail pop account?
Why has resetting it made things worse, as they ended up being the same setting as before?

I use port 25 with no problems for POP usage.
The only problem i have encountered is sending files over 5mb using POP, gmail rejects them. If I spilt it into two smaller files it is happy.
    No problem receiving big files.

  • Gmail POP Trouble

    Hello,
I usually integrate my POP Gmail account(s) with Mail. Recently I created a new administrator account on my iMac, moved my files over, and attempted to setup a new Gmail POP account in Mail on the new user. I entered all of the information correctly, however Mail simply refuses to display any new messages whatsoever, including test messages I've sent to myself. The inbox on Gmail.com works fine, so it isn't a server-side issue.
POP is enabled on my account, the ports are 465 and 995 respectively, and I simply cannot think of what the problem may be.
Furthermore, I remembered I had changed some of the permissions of the Macintosh HD folders (Library, etc) from "system" to my new user account specifically, but unfortunately changing them back did nothing to resolve the problem, even after a reboot. I even tried removing them from my old username's Mail.
Could anyone please help me? Thanks!

  • Mail 5.1 and Gmail POP problem

Firstly I'm not sure if this question has been answered previously, if yes, please lead me to that thread. I've upgraded to Lion and I'm currently using Mail 5.1 to download ALL my emails from my Gmail account. Everything is working as normal, but when I ask Mail to fetch it from Gmail POP, it downloads just a few and stops. I have to again command Mail to fetch new email everytime and it does the same thing - basically it doesn't download all emails till the last received email.
I am looking for some answers and can't seem to find them. Can anyone help me please.

Ok, so it took some time, but I guess you can't use POP with the new mail, so I just limited the imap to 1000 messages through the Gmail settings. I guess that will work, but it is a little frustrating that it is not more customizable.
