Gmail tab permanently using LOTS of RAM

I've noticed that my Firefox using really extended amounts of RAM (600 MB or so). I have tried everything what is suggested on Knowledge base, disabled plugins & addons, started in safe mode, etc etc, but problem still ocurs, even if I have opened only two tabs. But when I have closed gmail tab, Firefox's RAM usage jumped down to 100 MB. When I have opened it again, RAM usage will become something around 600 MB again, so it seems to that gmail is causing my problems.
Why gmail consuming so much RAM in my computer? Is there any way to get rid of it?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Creating a profile":
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Macbook pro late 2011 is on Mac OS X v10.7 Lion and it is using lot of RAM...when I turn on after 2minutes it freezes and do not repond and system prefrences also not working...plz help me....I don,t have mac os disc
I have tried safe mode boot, NVRAM and PRAM reset but no luck...

First, try a Safe Mode boot.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from your Apple () menu.
If that didn't help, reintall OS X..
Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access the built-in utilities in OS X Recovery

  • Tab page use up all RAM, causing Mac to freeze

I have reported this as a bug:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=975945
It seems that if a certain site (in this case https://parse.com/ ) has a link in the Tab Page thumb, it grabs all the RAM it can to the point of completely freezing the whole system.
This happens in a matter of seconds (200MB > 600MB > 900MB ... 1.6GB). Not quitting FF in time cause a complete system lock where you cannot even get to the "Force Quit.." window, and HD will work endlessly.
I have cleared all history, started in 'safe mode', created a new profile and deleted the old one, problem persist.
Here's how to easily reproduce (given, problematic site is not in your tab page):
(This on a Mac OS X 10.8, not sure about other systems).
    1. (optional) Open "Activity Monitor", and switch to 'Memory' tab. (So you can quit FF in time).
    2. Open "Tab Page"
    3. In a new window, go to "https://parse.com/" and drag the link to the 'tab page'.
    4. Watch the RAM pick up (and quit FF before it hit the fan).
I ended up disabling the tab page as I didn't see the problem getting any attention.
My bug report did not seemed to make an impression, it's just sitting there, did I miss something in filing it?

    Hi again,
Just having a coffee break and using someone else's account on a Windows machine.
No problem seen on that. Note the new tab page may be opened using the ''about'' protocol & navigating to '''''about:newtab''''' and that besides dragging bookmarks or shortcuts the pinned thumbnails may be set from ''about:config'' the preference is
    ''browser.newtabpage.pinned''
and the string value now includes
    ''[{"url":"https://parse.com/","title":"Parse"}, ''
I am going out now but will find time later today to also try this in Firefox on Linux.

  • Early 2013 13" MacBook Pro runs slow and uses a lot of RAM, why and what can be done?

    Problem description:
My computer is using a lot of RAM. Wondering if there’s a hardware issue, or a software issue, or something else. I currently have no programs open in the Doc, besides EntreCheck. and the RAM is showing about 75% used. I’m looking for suggestions on what I can do to speed it up and make it more functional, and efficient for doing design work. I recently upgraded from the original 4GB RAM (2x2GB), and from the original HD to a 512 GB SSD drive, and upgraded to Yosemite. Perhaps that was too much for this machine? Please help with anything that I can do to make it better! Thanks in advance!
I have a recent back-up, I'm open to saving user files and starting from scratch with the current hardware, etc... but would need some direction on how to do this. I did upgrade myself using Apple provided instructions.

Here's the new EtreCheck that I just ran. At a glance, it seems I may have missed deleting some things or they are stored in an additional location? I haven't jumped into anything yet to really test if there's a difference in performance for me. Once I do I will post that information.

  • How much RAM do tab groups use (on average)? Do I need to watch out for how many groups I create?

I may have gone overboard in the creation of Tab Groups. I say this because now my system is beginning to act a bit sluggish. I created 7 groups, two of which have 9 or 10 tabs. Should I pull back on the number of groups I create (as well as how many tab are located within each group). That is: How much RAM do tab groups use. How can I calibrate or understand the trade off between these markers and the amount of RAM they use?

You can see the memory usage on the about:memory page.
You can open about: pages via the location bar like you open a website.

Hello! After installing catalyst from Violo's repo i have noticed that Xorg.bin use a lot of ram(when i start the laptop it is 25mb but it keep rising till it get to 1.5gb in about 2h and I restart to free memory) This is on X-server 1.7 and now i downgrade to 1.16.4 but no effect. The nicer way to do this is to use the [catalyst-stable-14.X] repository databases in this manner (where you replace X with the corresponding number):
    [catalyst-stable-14.X]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch

No idea. Ask the AMD Developers upstream.

  • X + XFCE using a lot of RAM (Xorg 7.3 from testing)

First off, I didn't know where to put it, so feel free to move it.
I recently got a new laptop - HP 6510b (T7300, 2 GB RAM, X3100 onboard Intel GPU). Installed Arch on it, like on my other boxen. However, memory usage jumps through the roof once i run XFCE. I grabbed Xorg 7.3 from testing since that one has the Intel driver (xf86-video-intel) for my GPU.
    Some stats:
    Memory usage in runlevel 3:
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 2019 48 1970 0 4 19
    -/+ buffers/cache: 25 1993
    Swap: 282 0 282
Memory usage in runlevel 5 (logged in to XFCE, empty desktop, except for aDesklets and Conky):
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 2019 190 1828 0 7 53
    -/+ buffers/cache: 129 1890
    Swap: 282 0 282
Usually I boot into XFCE using 60 MB RAM with a similar configuration (even heavier, since I haven't got all the services running yet as I do normally - CUPS etc.). Now, that is obviously not the case. As mentioned above I have 2 GB of RAM, of which the onboard GPU should take max. 256 MB. Free does not seem to show that if I am correct (on my old laptop I could see 800+ MB of RAM, because 128 MB was reserved for the ATi GPU). Is this normal?
If I run htop and sort on memory usage I see X + XFCE using more memory than usual (60 MB total, without aDesklets & Conky). Normally the graphical layer only adds like 40 MB more (if not less, since it used to be 60 MB).
This is a screenshot of the memory-sorted active applications
Does anyone have any pointers, or experience similar behaviour with Xorg 7.3?

I was just wondering where the big difference came from. If it has to do with the inner workings of the driver, I'm afraid I can't do anything about then. I know I got plenty of RAM, I'm just a bit obsessed with stuff lingering around for nothing (bloat, you know ), and I suspected that might be the case here, which is not so, apparently .
Shining: I used to think one of the great advantages of Linux was that, with a slim environment, it could be very light on resources (especially RAM). At this moment the difference with a stripped XP is not that big anymore . Memory usage on an onboard ATi GPU, 1280x800, 16bit was 60 MB. I suppose that was with 24 bit colour depth too (it was not set explicitly in Xorg.conf but after defining it & restarting X RAM usage was the same).
I'd like to point out also there is nowhere in the BIOS i can set the amount of memory allocated to the X3100. It can have up to 384 MB according to Intel's docs, but I still got the full 2 GB RAM according to free. And the GPU has to get his memory in some way...

  • Recent xserver using a lot more RAM and is noticably slower.

To save battery life I lock both the graphics card and CPU into there lowest frequency settings. This was fine with little performance impact. However after a recent X server upgrade it has started using substantially more ram (around 5~ meg, use to be around 1). Also Firefox, and even Xterm and Vim now scroll very badly. Is there anything I can do about this, without raising the CPU/GFX frequency.
    Thanks.

    Bump.

  • Why is my iMac (2.8.GHz Intel Core i7 w/ 4GBs RAM) using so much RAM?

Right now I have only Firefox open with 4 tabs. Firefox only has 1 extension (1Password). No other application open or running (that I know of). My dock has 17 icons (including basics like trash, finder, launch, etc). As mentioned I have a:
    2.8 GHz
    Intel Core i7
    4 GBs RAM
    21.5 Inch
    Running on 10.7.3 (Lion)
    My RAM situation is this:
    1.83 GB Free
    78 MB Inactive
    1.40 GB Active
    697 MB Wired
    2.17 GB Used
    4.0 GB Total
Image of my Activity Monitor (with user removed) here:
columns as follows: PID, Process Name, % CPU, Threads, Real Mem, Kind
I'm trying to figure out why my iMac is using so much RAM when I only have Firefox open? are any of these activities unnecessary and if so how might I turn them off and so they don't start automatically when I initially turn on the computer? This imac is two weeks old and so I haven't done a whole lot of customization yet. Please help if you can. Really appreciate it. Trying to optimize this baby. Thank you!!

Here's mine: I have 16 Safari tabs open, some with Flash junk, and 13 apps "open" according to the Dock indicator:
By the way the number of icons in your Dock has essentially no effect on memory. Only running apps - the ones with the little dot indicator - might be occupying memory. Even that is somewhat of an oversimplification, since "active" apps may or may not have any active processes associated with them. It's all a function of how Lion manages its memory resources, and that is a whole new world to most of us.
With Lion, Apple is seeking to eliminate the system effects of whether an app is even open or not. Just another trivial detail the average user ought not to be concerned with, in their opinion.
If you want a cursory introduction to that fascinating subject, Google the Ars Technica Lion review that was written a few months ago. It may ease your concerns about memory management. If you are an experienced computer user, it will rock your world.

  • In Firefox 6 Beta i can only switch 2-3 tabs by using ctrl + tab ... this is rly annoying! Is this only a bug in FF6B?

11 tabs are open. 1 Youtube and the rest are non-flash based.
There is no really a solution by me to switching tabs permanently.
In Firefox 8 Nightly i can switching tabs without any problems. :S

Hi - yes I can! I hadn't noticed that little arrow before, thanks.
However I would really like to stop it hiding the first tab all the time.... Even when I navigate to the first tab using that "list all tabs" arrow, it still remains 'hidden' (i.e. I can't see a tab up the top, even when that tab is active. And when I navigate away from it to another tab, it is invisible again).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Firefox uses too much ram

My FIrefox has been using too much RAM as of late. I have followed all the steps in the firefox support page about checking for possible plugins that may or may not be using too much RAM, but after starting firefox in safe mode, there really wasn't much of a difference. Maybe like 5k kb less, but it's still not enough to account for the 1.7million kb that firefox ends up using with one tab open.
I like to leave my pc on for a bit, and sometimes I'll leave firefox running with a tab open while I'm using other applications, but even if i restart my firefox, the RAM usage does not decrease. After closing all applications and leaving only firefox running, it appears to be around 1.5million kb. Only if i restart my whole pc does the RAM usage drop back to normal levels, and then it ramps back up after a period of time.
I would like to get this resolved soon, or at least figure out the cause of this.

    My system has:
    2x2GB DDR3 Kingston memory modules
Radeon HD5850 with 1 GB of RAM
    AMD Phenom II X4 955 processor 3.20GHz
    Windows 7 Professional, SP 1 64-bit OS

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. See if there
    is still a problem.
It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware.
Look thru your add-ons list and make sure you know what each one is
there for. Also, check the programs that are on your computer
'''Windows > Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs.'''
    '''Mac: Open the "Applications" folder'''
Go thru the list and use a web search to check any that you don't
    know what they are.

  • My MBP mid 2014 is using too much RAM

My MBP mid 2014 is using too much ram on kernel task, and some others what can I do to fix this?

To add to Tim's excellent advice, look at my numbers for my  quad-core i7 iMac with 12GB RAM installed:
As you can see, the system has reserved almost all the available RAM but the swaps are zero and the memory pressure is on the bottom of the scale. My computer runs very fast.
RAM handling in OSX changed with OS10.9 and continues in 10.10. The measures you were using only apply to Mac OSX 10.8 and older.
If your swaps move up into the Gig range, you are probably using a bunch of RAM. You cannot upgrade RAM in a 2014 Retina model so it behooves you to avoid third-party utilities like "FreeMemory,"  keep an eye on Safari extensions, and be frugal with your user login items (System Preferences > Users and Groups > {your account} > Login Items tab).
