Gmail with IMAP draining battery?

I've been using the POP access for Gmail on my phone for the last month or so, and my battery life has been pretty normal, according to the specs. However, I changed over to IMAP access two days ago, and coincidentally enough, my battery seems to be draining much more quickly. None of my other phone habits have changed, that I know of - in fact, I've been doing less internet browsing as of late.
Is it possible that the IMAP access has created a lot of new background work for the phone, or is this really just a coincidence? Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Tallguy, read the posts... they are using Gmail with "IMAP" turned on. This feature was only available in the last week or so.
I have definitely noticed that the phone is more active (witnessed by the increased GSM "buzz" in my desktop speakers) since changing over to Gmail IMAP. IMAP does so much more than just check for new email, so I guess it is connected for longer periods and therefore uses more power during the course of the day.
IMAP has changed my whole email experience for the better, so a little less battery life is an acceptable tradeoff for me!

  • Problem accessing gmail with IMAP using JavaMail APIs

    Hi,
    I am trying to access my gmail account with JavaMail API. I am able to access it using pop3s but not with IMAP.
    I have used following details:
    protocol: imap
    host: imap.gmail.com
    port: -1 (also tried with 993) but no success.
    My basic code is
    url = new URLName(protocol, getHostname(), 993, mbox,
                              getUsername(), getPassword());
             Properties props = null;
             try {
              props = System.getProperties();
             } catch (SecurityException sex) {
              props = new Properties();
             session = Session.getInstance(props, null);
              session.setDebug(true);
            store = session.getStore(url);
            store.connect();
            folder = store.getFolder(url);
            folder.open(Folder.READ_WRITE);Any pointers?
    Thanks.

    Changed protocol from "imap" to "imaps"....and used port 993...and its working!!!!

  • Design flaws in 1.1.3 implementation of Gmail with IMAP

    After updating to 1.1.3, I noticed that the mail app started downloading read emails from my Gmail account. Moreover, when I began to delete the files, I found that they were also sent to the trash on the Gmail server. Rather than laboriously downloading all 5,500 email files 200 at a time and moving them to the "All Mail" folder, I deleted my Gmail account and re-added it manually as a POP3 account.
    I would like to use IMAP, but I should be able to configure it to only download unread or recent messages. Moreover, the default should certainly not be that deleting messages on the iPhone also deletes them on the Gmail server. Part of the philosophy behind Gmail is to not delete messages.

    I've been using gMail IMAP through two firmware updates, including 1.1.3, and have not seen any change in its functions at all. It is still the very best workaround for lack of mass deletion of messages on the phone.
    BREAKING NEWS: I just found this on Google's site. It explains why I saw no change (I was always IMAP) and why you did:
    Attention iPhone POP users
    If you configured Gmail access on your iPhone by tapping the large 'Gmail' icon in mail setup, please note that installing software update 1.1.3 will automatically convert Gmail on your iPhone from POP access to IMAP access. This means that actions you take on your iPhone will now sync with actions in your Gmail web interface (i.e. messages you read on your iPhone will show up as 'Read' in the web interface). This also means that messages you delete on your iPhone will be moved to the Trash folder in the Gmail web interface, and thus deleted after 30 days. Please exercise caution when deleting messages, as this behavior is markedly different from POP access.

  • Gmail with Apple Mail problem: inbox label in the trash folder

    I am using Gmail with IMAP In Apple Mail (3.6), after I deleted a mail from inbox, it correctly move the mail to Trash.
    However, when I check it in the Trash folder in my web Gmail, there is a inbox label appear on every mail that I deleted from Apple Mail. Does anyone know how to deal with this issue?
    thanks,
    Kelvin

    Have you tried contacting Gmail tech support?

    Open Mail preferences and select Accounts then MailBox Behavior. You probably need to unclick the safe draft to server.

  • Mutt new tags issue with Gmail via IMAP

    Hi all,
    I've been using Mutt for a while and I very much like it.
    However, Gmail's IMAP implementation is a bit weird and causing me some troubles. I'm accessing my Gmail account directly via Mutt (NO offlineimap and NO trash patch). In particular, I'm getting lots of emails marked as new in my All Mail folder that I've already read.
    I've realized that if I receive an email, then read it (or remove the new tag), mark it as deleted and then sync-mailbox, when I go to the All Mails mailbox it's still tagged as new.
    If I read the message, sync-mailbox (note this additional sync), mark it as deleted and then sync-mailbox once again, then it doesn't appear marked as new on the All Mails mailbox.
    Any clues? This is really driving me crazy. I must be doing something really wrong but I can't figure out what. I've already tried setting delete_untag without luck.
    Thanks in advance.
    For the record, I'm using Mutt 1.5.20 (with IMAP support but no trash patch). Here's my .muttrc:
    set realname = "..."
    set from = "..."
    set imap_user = $from
    set imap_pass = "..."
    set folder = imaps://imap.gmail.com/
    set spoolfile = +INBOX
    set postponed = +[Gmail]/Borradores
    set smtp_url = smtp://[email protected]:587/
    set smtp_pass = $imap_pass
    set copy = no
    set certificate_file = ~/.mutt/certificates
    set header_cache = ~/.mutt/cache/headers
    set message_cachedir = ~/.mutt/cache/bodies
    set sort = threads
    set sort_aux = reverse-last-date-received
    set pager_index_lines = 6
    set markers = no
    set timeout = 120
    set delete = yes
    set beep_new = yes
    bind index y imap-fetch-mail
    macro index pr "<change-folder>=INBOX<enter>"
    macro index pe "<change-folder>=[Gmail]/Enviados<enter>"
    macro index pb "<change-folder>=[Gmail]/Borradores<enter>"
    macro index pt "<change-folder>=[Gmail]/Todos<enter>"
    macro index ps "<change-folder>=[Gmail]/Spam<enter>"
    macro index pp "<change-folder>=[Gmail]/Papelera<enter>"

    I have this same issue using gmail with offlineimap -- because of the multiple tags, removing the INBOX tag (deleting from the inbox) doesn't remove the Unread status from the version stored in the All Mail (or archive) folder. I think we'd need a macro that detected the duplicate mail and marked both as read -- not sure if that'd work or not.
    I'd also like to figure out how to tell if an incoming message was automatically tagged with another label by my gmail filter (display what other labels are assigned to a message in any view).
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Scott

    I'm unable to send and receive email through Apple Mail 4.  I've checked my settings on Preferences, and my password to Gmail is up to date for syncing with IMAP, but it still won't connect.  Suggestions?

    I think it's trying to open it in a gMail eMail & is losing your gMail password that it needs log into gMail, but not 100% positive.
    Have you tried Right clicking or Control+click on the eMail link & choose Copy? Works on some, not others.

    I have to backup of Gmail with Thunderbird Portable, so I could free some space on server - but when I use IMAP (to keep labels) after deletin on server...
    ...my post also deletes on Thunderbird. Please make an option to prevent it, so deleting on a server doesn't effect mail in the Thunderbird. I would be so happy to have it...
    David

    First Thunderbird portable is supported by its author at portableapps.com.
    Secondly you are describing exactly how the IMAP email standard works and Thunderbird has no control over that.
    Thunderbird has Local Folders to move messages that you want to keep locally. Maybe the portable version does too.

  • Help with imap gmail account via mac mail

    What are the best settings for gmail as imap in mac mail?
    I have my gmail account set up with mac Mail as an IMAP account.
    I notice that in the last few weeks?? not sure how long, my mac mail is taking forever to load.  I opened the activity window and it seems like there are so many things happening.  I did find an old account that was still had some activity and while I had delteed it, I did need to do a few more steps to get it out of the process.
    Now, as it still seems to take forever for my inbox to fully load, I began looking into the settings.
    I am not able to change the settings for trash and I think saving the deleted messages to the server could be a waste of time.  This is the advanced setttings page
    the trash is 'grayed out' and won't allow me to uncheck the 'store deleted messages on the server'.  Anyone know how to change this?
    Also, I want to uncheck 'store sent messages on the server' as I think that will save a LOT of process activity, but gmail's directions for imap accounts says to leave it checked.  Not sure why, any thoughts?
    Michelle

    I'm not familiar with CalbeOne, but you can follow the instructions they provided at their site:
    http://help.cableone.net/HSD/mycableone/migrate/default.aspx
    You might also want to make sure you followed their transfer instructions.
    Build your accounts in Mail as per the POP or IMAP settings provided. When adding accounts to Mail, when you get to the first screen, you can hold the option key down when you hit continue for more options on the Mail configurations rather than the standard defaults.
    If you are viewing these accounts at the gmail website, then you might need to do some configuration there also. I'm not sure on how much they are integrated with gmail.

  • Drained battery with iPhone 3G 3.0 upgrade

    I loaded the new 3.0 software a few days ago with no problems. Today I found that my "turned off/ idle" phone in my pocket had gone to the new Apple recorder program and has been recording for 58 minutes by the time I discovered it. So unknown if this will be a source of battery drain by a program starting on its own (buggy?).

    mine lasts a lot.
    this is pretty much the daily use of my iPhone3G using 3.0 for a week.
    i work from 7am to 4PM, one hour break time in that timeline , its on standby for 8 hours , on break time i pretty much make heavy use of Youtube , Safari and Mail among other Apps like IM+ and sometimes some games, after my work day i still have almost 50% of battery left.
    my settings
    Push is set to manual
    Notifications are On and have 4 apps on it
    the internet connection is always 3G
    so my guess is that you guys do heavy use of your phones all day or maybe you guys are leaving the Safari , Mail and IPod apps running in the background.
    test this and see if your battery lasts longer.
    after every use of Safari , Mail or IPod before putting your Phone into standby do this, open safari, then press and hold the top button until you see the slide to power off option, release that button and now hold down home button (square) , after 6 seconds it will return to the home screen and Safari will be closed now ,do the same for Mail and IPod, open mail press top button until off slide , hold home for 6 seconds , then open Mail , hold top button until off slide then home for 6 seconds, now apps that don't shutdown like Safari , Mail and IPod will shutdown and the phone will use less battery while on standby. if you open them again they will again remain open and drain battery.
    there was a function on 3.0 when it got announced that it would close every app to save battery, people complained about it, apple listened and removed that function. now only Safari ,Mail and IPod apps stay processing and wasting battery in the background.

  • How should I mark a message as spam when using Mail with IMAP Gmail

    Hi,
    I've been using Apple Mail 3.2 with Gmail's IMAP for several month's and am very happy with the setup. One feature of Gmail that's great is the spam filtering, however, every day a couple spam messages get through the filtering. My question is this: What's the best way to train Gmail of a spam message?
    Accessing Gmail through the Safari allows you to mark a message as Spam. I assume that Gmail then does something to train its algorithm that spam has been received so that a similar message will go direct to the Spam folder the next time its received.
    I prefer to deal with my email via Apple Mail or via the iPhone Mail and have been moving spam messages to the Spam folder. Does this action do anything to train Gmail's spam filtering so that a similar message will go direct to the spam folder?
    Thanks

    Hello Hal:
    I think you will get a better answer to your question by contacting G-mail. In my case, I use AOL mail in Apple's mail application. AOL catches the vast majority of spam/junk and it is placed in a spam folder. The few that get through seem to be trapped by Apple's mail and placed in the Junk folder.

  • Whats up with IMAP + Gmail + Apple mail

    Dear folks,
    I've been searching the entire (no really) internet for some answers but nothing seems to work and it's starting to annoy me now! The problem is that i've been using IMAP and Gmail perfectly for years on my mac. Recently i bought a new macbook pro and all of a sudden i cant receive any more emails! It just says it cant reach the IMAP server 'cause my password/username isn't right. I've tried just about anything. I know about the terminal trick where you delete some hidden folders and the capthca tricks. I've tried them all, nothing seems to work!
    I pay Apple a lot of money so it really bothers me that something like receiving email is such a big deal.. Can anyone please help me with this problem? It shouldnt be so hard right?
    Thanks guys!

    As you're trying to connect via IMAP is it safe to assume that you don't have any local emails stored? If you don't you could try wiping the Mail settings and start from scratch - see if that makes any difference. I only suggest that as accessing gmail via IMAP is working for me.
    If that doesn't work then as a long shot, what does imap.gmail.com resolve to for you? For me it's currently 209.85.229.109 (I'm assuming they have a few machines) and what happens if use that IP address instead of the URL?

  • When I access the "music" app it appears to be accessing the internet constantly even with "match" turned off.  Is this normal? Draining battery?

    I have an iphone 4s and I've had what I think is a quickly draining battery.  I've tried all the usual stuff with looking at "location" services, reducing the "push" emails, etc.  In the process, I decided to turn off "itunes match."  Still, I notice whenever I'm in the "Music" app, not even playing music, the iphone indicates internet activity with the circular wheel.  If I exit, it stops.  It constantly is moving when I'm in music.
    Is this normal?  It seems to be draining the battery.
    I've tried to re-boot, I've tried to re-store, and it still is constantly "going" even if I'm not playing music.
    What is up with this?
    Advice?
    Thanks.

    More info.  I did a "reset" to all settings, this left itunes match off.  But, when I went into the music app, looked at the "songs" tab, all of my songs (including those "in the cloud) were there.  It was then that the "internet" symbol looked like it was syncing again, even though I had "match" off.   Ugh...I guess I'll need to set this up as new phone to see if I can avoid this constant draining of the battery when playing music?

  • Updating IOS8.02 on 4s,when service provider is changed or not available,phone goes to search mode,its drain battery very fast,it does not stop even in charging mode,it goes to zero.only get charged in Airplane mode.why?(with different Simcard)

    Updating IOS 8.02 on 4s,when service provider is changed or not available,phone goes to search mode & its drain battery very fast,it does not stop even in charging mode,it goes to zero.(Even in switch off mode) only get charged in Airplane mode.why?(with different Sim cards)
    RBVAIDYA

    Because GPS has nothing to do with WiFi, cellular signals, or data of any sort. GPS is implemented by signals sent by satellites that are received by GPS receivers. The receivers process the information from the GPS satellites and calculate your location. GPS never sends data anywhere; GPS functionality is receive only.
    If you have WiFi or cellular data turned on this can improve the accuracy of GPS, because the GPS receiver can then use the known location of cell towers and WiFi networks to refine the GPS location. GPS by itself has an accuracy of 10 meters, or about 34 feet. Using the additional information from WiFi and cellular data this can be brought down to 3 meters (10 feet). This mode is called Augmented GPS, or A-GPS.

  • Heating Up & Draining battery fast on iPhone 5s after iOS 7.1 update

    Hi,
    I updated my iPhone 5s 64GB to iOS 7.1 & it's heating up and draining battery so fast not to mention when I charge it , it takes longer time to charge!
    I didn't have this issue before on the previous version. I tried restoring my iPhone two times & also rebooting my iPhone five times, but nothing works!
    I've looked in other complaints and some of them suggested to switch off background app refresh and locations!
    I didn't have this issue before and I won't turn them off because if the problem because of it then I should experience the same problem on the previous version and why would I turn it off? So what's the purpose of the phone?
    My wife, my sister, my brother & my mom they got an iPhone 5 and they don't experience this problem except me!
    My iPad Air and my wife iPad Mini 2( Retina Display) and there is no problem with the iOS 7.1 .
    I've looked in other websites and found that there are other people experiencing the same problem. Apple should fix this problem ASAP!
    Is there anyone experiencing the same problem and what did he/she do to fix it incase he/she fixed it !

    I don't have any issues with my 5S on 7.1
    Have you actually taken your phone to the Apple store and have them look at it?
    Even if you don't want to turn off background app refresh,  you should turn it off and see what the results are.
    also you said you restored twice, did you restore as NEW?
