Hi, I am in the UK and have just signed up with a new ISP, Sky.com. Sky uses Gmail, for it's email services, the only issue I have is with the receiving of mail from my online account.
Does anyone know if it's possible to prevent MAIL automatically receiving mail from the online account (Sky Gmail). With my previous ISP, MAIL allowed me to download the mail at my convenience, however, now whenever I open the MAIL programme it automatically sync's with the online mailboxes.
I then get all the rubbish that is online, any ideas how to stop the auto sync..........
I hope I have explained this clearly enough....anyone have an answer?

PS: I know I can go online and clear the crap from my mail boxes prior to opening MAIL on my Mac.
But sometimes I just want to write an email using MAIL without getting mail from my online account?
I think the problem is solved (unless someone has a better answer).
My ISP (Sky.com) recommends IMAP for mail handling this I beleive is the reason why my Safari Mail and my Sky Email (Gmail) account constantly sync's.
I suppose I could change the setting back to POP, not sure if this would be a better solution or not, as Sky recommends the IMAP way of doing things.
I suppose I just have to learn the new way of handling my mail.............!

I have tried resetting safari and it does not help.

Please help - I am beginning to hate google, my android and gmail. I have just wasted about 5 hours in a futile attempt to try and get my current Mac contacts list on my computer updated to my phone. I'm not that computer literate but I have looked up about google phone accounts, vCards, backing up contact lists, what SD on phones are, and God know what else. I have searched the internet and tried all sorts of things and I still have a mac with a now correct contact list (after the iPad contacts scrambled it and I spent ages manually correcting them all) and a phone with an outdated contact list. If you try and sync them the phone wants to overwrite the computer one just like the iPad did (would it be so **** hard to give you a choice on the phone as to which overwrites which!). After all the advice on the internet failed, I got the bright idea to completely delete all the ones on the phone and if it was empty of contacts the computer one could be exported to it. Not as simple as it sounds. First I backed up (I think) my computer contacts list. Numerous futile attempts to go through the phone options to globally delete all contacts did not work - they gave a warning message and you got to choose whether to continue or not, I did, and it looked like it might be working as it changed to zero data on the phone, but then they all popped back up again from God knows where from, but without their little added bits like pictures of the people. So, I tried un- syncing the darn phone from google and then deleting them globally. That didn't work either. I tried deleting them all again and again and google would crash and not let me do it. It is absolutely ridiculous that this is so damned difficult to do (especially if you are not computer savvy) and that you cannot choose which device overwrites which when syncing. I gave up and ticked sync with Google again (not that it appears to do anything to the phone contact list at all). So after 5 hours I am back to where I started from, with a phone showing all the same incorrect contacts (but the pictures are back), which wants to overwrite the computer if I try any sort of sync, and no way to fix them except go into each one manually and try and do it - and how long would that take (and I've already wasted hours and hours fixing scrambled contact lists!). I think I will do a print out of the computer contact list and just carry it around with me like an address book - so much bloody simpler. So now I have a headache, am fighting an overwhelming urge to hurl the phone at the wall, hoping for a heat wave to evaporate icloud things and am wishing I had bought an iPhone instead of the stupid HTC Android. Can any one offer me any suggestions on how to get rid of the contacts on my phone and replace them with the ones in my mac address list - hopefully after that they can sync to their hearts content and not stuff everything up again (which was why I unsynced google a while back - because the phone's list kept making stuff ups and scrambling and duplicating my computer contacts list). Am I the only one on the planet having this problem or is there someone else out there who has had it and solved it.
Without "pretending" to be yourself on the other phone (change settings) there's nothing else you can do.
iOS devices are meant to be single user and can't view iCloud.com the same way a Mac or PC can do.
You need to find a desktop or laptop machine (Mac or PC) to log in at iCloud. -
I have gmail and hotmail account on my macbook.
In gmail I can visualize all the mailboxes but in hotmail i only can see the inbox ¿how can I visualize the rest of the mailboxes?
I have the same problem with my ipad; the solution would be the same?

You should be able to see two different tabs when setting up the email if you go to Other > Add Mail Account. Once you enter in the email address and password, you should be at the next screen to provide more details about the email as far as incoming and outgoing servers and at the top there will be a blue section to add it in as a POP or IMAP email account. Please help me and tell how can I stop using my primary Apple ID (Gmail) but leave my secondary Apple ID (icloud) as primary ond only ONE?
I started using Apple ID in 2011 when iCloud was not exist and was forced to use non-apple e-mail adress as primary ID.
So I used GMail mailbox.
When iCloud was started I created my account but unfortunatelly can't remove this Gmail address from my Apple ID and replace it with icloud mail address.
I was VERY dissapointed because I don't want to use "outside" mailbox to get letters from Apple and ny ID.
In fact I see the Apple old users and fans discrimination.
When creating new user accounts are free to create a box on the iCloud mail and use it as a primary ID, and the only ONE.
At the same time the old user is obliged to keep third-party mail box like Gmail etc. as the primary and can not get such an opportunity, as a new user
This is extremely inconvenient and a VERY strange logical.
For example, now I want to stop using this mailbox on Gmail but I can not do that because in this case I lose access to my ID, or run the risk that someone in the future will create a box with the same name on Gmail (when name will be free and available) and will automatically get access to my accounts on Apple and to my Apple ID.
Now, to avoid this, your team, I offer the only way out: ID, create anew.
Of course it's possible, but then:
- I lose all my purchases for 3 years and will be forced to make them again and pay money for the second time for my purchases
- Lose access to the familiar iCloud e-mail address who now serves as secondary ID because this e-mail address is almost no longer available and will never be released in future.
And now answer me for ONLY TWO questions:
- WHERE IS LOGIC?
- WHAT ABOUT TO BE FRIENDLY FOR YOUR USERS AND FANS?

Hopefully for your GOOD answers.You cannot make your @icloud.com address the login address for the ID. However you can change your ID, currently a Gmail one, to any other functioning non-Apple email address. The Gmail address would then no longer access your account, and so even if someone were to obtain posession of it (is that even possible) it wouldn't allow them to get into your account.
If you want to change your ID to another email address please follow the procedure outlined below, particularly noting the first step.
Firstly, if you have 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' enabled on any of your devices, turn it off.
Create a new email address, for example at Yahoo or Gmail, or anywhere convenient (or you can use an existing address as long as it has never been associated with an Apple ID).
Go to http://appleid.apple.com and click 'Manage your Apple ID'. Sign in with the current ID.
Where it says 'Apple ID and primary email address' and gives your current ID email address, click 'edit'.
Enter your new address and click 'Save changes'.
Now you will need to go to each of your devices and sign out in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud - 'Sign out' on a Mac, 'Delete this account' on an iOS device (this will not delete the account from the server).
Then sign back in with your new ID. Your iCloud data will disappear from your devices when you sign out, but reappear when you sign back in.
I re-iterate: before you start, turn off 'Find My Mac' (or whatever) or you will need the services of Support. -
Help. My old @us.army.mil email address was terminated by the army. I used that address to register my first apple id account on my iPad. I can't remember my original Apple ID number and if I ask to reset my password, Apple sends the reset link to my old non-working email address. I have a new gmail address and a new Apple ID number associated with that address. How do I get my iPad to use my new gmail address and new apple ID number? Remember, I can't log out of my old account because I can't remember the password. Amd Apple will only reset the password by sending a link to my old, non functioning army email account. ( I hate army webmail for canceling all retired military email accounts). John Marc

How can I use one gmail address on two different macbooks in 'mail'?
I'm using one business gmail address. Me and my girlfriend both have a macbook. Now the gmail address is linked to my macbook. But she wants to use it as well. Unfortunately the 'mail' system won't allow her to sync with the gmail address. And I get messages from gmail saying that someone tried to log in to my account. Which is something I certainly want, but can't change. Does anyone now how I can use 1 gmail address on two different mac's? Thanks
You may be able to change the suspicious account activity message alerts
in your Gmail settings, and check that side of it, since I can use several
means of accessing my Gmail and Google Accounts; and in the past had
shared an account (not google) with another party half a world away when
her email server went down for a month.
The Mail software should not know the difference, unless the setup in there
is not correct; if this is so, then more than what she says would be wrong.

My iTunes downloads were made using my old gmail address. I had to quit using this address as it got hacked. How do I get my iTunes downloads into my new iTunes account that was created with a new gmail address? In my old iTunes account (with the old gmail address, I can't 'update' my email address or even 'add an alternate address' as I had already created this gmail account and inputting the new address into iTunes gives me the 'pop-up' that 'this account is already in use.' Advice please!
Good luck. It took me weeks to fix this when I had to do it. Your old ID branches out in lots of places. You may have to delete app and get them again, at least that is what Apple told me. Plus, all of your settings on your iPad that required any ID, will have to be changed. My old ID kept showing up in different places for weeks. Changing it on Apple.com is just the beginning.

i am new to icloud. i would like to manage all our household email accounts through icloud. i currently use gmail. is there a way to route all gmail messages through an icloud email so i do not have to change my email address? also how do i create multiple email accounts using the same apple id?

MikeNo, iCloud does not handle 3rd party mail, and Google can already sync to all your devices without any help.
iCloud accounts are individual, there is no 'Family' account. Open an account for each user, each will have an iCloud address. -

My emails go from outbox into I cloud recovered section. I have gmail too. how can I delete my icloud account and just use gmail? Speed test on wifi good.

DMLet's try deleting the iCloud account from your iPad, then adding it back.
If you have any photo stream photos on your iPad, save them to your camera roll by opening your My Photo Stream alburm, tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll. The force close the Mail app by double-tapping the home button, locating Mail in the list at the bottom, tap and hold Mail until it wiggles, tap to close it, then tap the home button agian.
Then to delete the iCloud account go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, choose Delete from My iPad when prompted. This only deletes the account and your iPad data from your iPad, not from iCloud. Then go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in and turn on your sync settings, confirming that Mail is set to On. Your iCloud data will reappear on your iPad after a brief delay as it redownloads. Open Mail and see if your iCloud account is there now. -
I log on to Yahoo mail. I read the mail and want to sign out by clicking the "sign out" tab and nothing! It is as if the tab is frozen. same with bank page, gmail and others. What do I do to eliminate this problem?

Gmail no longer working with Apple Mail?
In the lasts 24 hours, without making changes to hardware or software, Mail has quit retrieving mail from my gmail accounts.
While I never receive any sort of warning about passwords or other issue, I simply get this:
And the "activity" window just stays that way... for hours with no result. The Connection Doctor window:
The Church Email account is an old one that is no longer active... I just haven't removed it from my list. But the "verify username and password" message is consistent... Strangely enough, down the same window - the SMTP connection works just fine. I can sent mail from all of my gmail accounts using Mail... Considering that the user name/password is the same for both sending and receiving mail.. SOMETHING is funky with Apple Mail.

Did you change any setting in Mail? Did you change your gmail account password? Did you activate 2-step verification on your gmail account?
If you haven't done anything from above, maybe problem is with your network... Did you try to turn off your router for few minutes and then turn ON again?
Did you install any 3rd party security apps on your Mac? Did you enable system firewall? Do you use any proxy servers? Do you use VPN?
There might be more questions...
