GNB Max MS-6565 and Dual Channel DDR ram

What's the deal with this new type of memory?
I can only find bits and pieces of information from online retail stores and I am bit frustrated.
Does anyone know where I can find more information?
Cheers

Ok, you said that the MSI board cannot be overclocked. Fair enough, I guess you have tried it yourself.
If you increase the fsb speed to 170MHz, why not decrease the multiplier?
170MHz * 14 = 2.4 (2.38)
instead of,
170MHz * 18 = 3.06
Also, do you know whether the mainboards that you mentioned (by Asus and Gigabyte) will allow me to increase the fsb speed to 200MHz?
vaporas
The multiplyer cant be changed on the P4's, unless u have an engineering sample, and theres no way we [general public] could get one. Plus raising the FSB on the MSI board IS the problem, it scales the AGP/PCI with it, and doesnt allow u to increase the voltage for AGP and Mem. With the FSB on the asus and gigabyte, it'll be more CPU limited untill you get to about 210MHz, but I think you should be able to easily clear 170 FSB, if not 180FSB before anything becomes limiting...

  • Dual Channel DDR Vs. DDR Memory, etc.

So I'm in the process of upgrading again and was hoping to add a little more memory to my system.  With all the different types of memory out there it starts to become a little confusing as to how much bang your going to get for your buck and the pitfalls of marketing  ?( .  Currently i'm looking into Dual Channel DDR since this is the new craze.  I currently have 1 512MB stick of PC3200 DDR memory that I plan on replacing with 1GB (2) sticks of Dual Channel DDR PC3700 or PC4000.  The difference is 60 bucks and I'm wondering...is it worth the extra cash for PC4000?  It's Corsair memory which I currently have never had problems with but it is a little pricier than the generic memory out there.
Is it possible that the only reason to do something like this would be overclocking or is my system going to use the full extent I give it (Or am I putting myself in line so that my memory will be able to support future cpu, etc. upgrades).  My specs are below, feel free to ask questions.  I appreciate any replies in advance.  )
    Thanks again,

A bios update could fix the RAM compatability problem.
So i\'ve been getting alot of crashes since i purchased this board but more so when I installed the new memory.  This last round produced another error message that was logged with microsofts OCR tool.  The debug information was submitted and handed back as a memory problem.  I downloaded their DOS memory tool to test memory and tried the motherboard with a bunch of different configurations.  Here\'s what I found:
4 different sticks of memory at any configuration produced Failures on WMATS+, WINVC and would eventually lockup the system.
    I went to the processor....
3 different processors all generated failures with any of the same memory configurations.
I tested all memory sticks in a different system with no failure.  It ran 5 passes and even an extended test without failure.
I disconnected my drives from the MB (currently running disk striping on IDE 3, not sure if that is even effective since they are both on the same ide channel.  What's up with only one?? and 2 for SATA) and ran the same tests with the memory and none have failed.  If i connect the drives and turn of the RAID bios once again all tests + extended pass.
So leads to my question...How do I fix this?  I was running a Soyo P4X400 before with Disk striping on two seperate channels and I wanted to bring that same performance to this board.  Not sure though if i\'m getting that though...let alone the current problem it has with memory when it\'s enabled.
Any help is appreciated, I dont mind being the Gunnuie pig if it helps other people in the process.  I\'m just happy i dont have bad RAM, CPU, and possible the board.   )

  • MSI K7N2 Delta ILSR and Dual Channel

I just got an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ processor and 2 matched sticks of Mushkin 2-2-2-6 512meg pc3200 ddr. The computer works fine when the memory is in normal mode. But when you want dual channel, everything goes haywire. The computer reboots over and over. I have tried changing the voltage, and changing the memory timings, but nothing seems to work. Does this mobo hate Mushkin memory? I have heard of other people running dual channel memory on this board with no problems, but I have a bucketful. This board only has voltage settings for memory in the bios of 1.5, 1.6, and 1.7. This memory chooses 1.7 when I put it in auto mode. Could it be the modules are not getting enough juice? Any ideas?

Last night I was trying to find some kind of a solution to the America's Army critical error problem(yeah, got that too). I went to disable fast writes within the Smart Gart utility, and when I went for a reboot, my computer went into a reboot loop very similar to the one I got when I first tried to run these 2 sticks of memory in dual channel. It took a while to get the computer to stop it. At this point, I starting believing my problem was not a hardware problem. When I finally got the computer to boot into xp and stay fairly stable, I first ran checkdisk and had it repair any damage. I updated my video drivers from 4.7 cats to 4.8. I updated my bios, as a new revision just came out not too long ago. I reinstalled directx 9.0b. I reinstalled my chipset drivers as a precautionary measure. I then checked both memory controllers using one stick at a time, and both memory controllers checked out. Yes, I am using 2 sticks of 512 meg memory each. I then put one stick in slot one and the other in slot 3 to try for dual channel again. The computer booted up normally, did not reboot, and ran stable. I then ran 3DMARK 2003 and 2001SE, and posted new high scores in both. I am not sure exactly which action I performed was the one that fixed the problem, but the shotgun blast worked. I appreciate all the help everyone gave me.

  • Memory and dual channel problems

    Hi
    Can someone help me?
1- I have 2x512 MB DDR 400 Twinmos CL 2.5 and amd xp 2600 (fsb 333) and Msi K7n2 delta L. I have tested separatly my sticks, one of them woks great, if i put dram clock at 166 or 200 the sytem is always stable. The other stick is not so great , if i put him at 200, most of times the sytem doesn´t boot and the lights  in the d-bracket display memory problems, when it manages to boot, when i get to windows i´m always getting blue screens with error messages. If i put to 166 it´s more stable, but sometimes hapens the same, but less frequently.
I have run memtest, but it shows no errors in  both sticks.
2- When i use both sticks together in dual channel dimm 1 & dimm 3 sometimes windows only displays 512 MB, but if i reboot the sytem, i get 1 GB as it should be.
It is not frequently, but sometimes it hapens.
3- How can i detect dual ddr is working or not?
I´m asking this becouse the two sticks i have are similar, but there is a little diference, one of them has twinmos chips and the other has M.tec chips. But both are from Twinmos.  Sisoftware sandra shows them as equal.
I have heard that this mobo, on the boot screen should display something like this:
    Memory Mode: Dual Channel
    or
    Memory Mode: Single Channel
But in the boot screen it only says DDR 400 or DDR 333 acording to the setings i have put in the bios.
My bios version is 5.1 (4/18/2003). Do you think i need to flash the bios?

  • 32 bit windows 7 and Two- 4GB sticks of RAM and dual channels

    Hello,
I have a Desktop running Win 7 32 bit. At the moment I have 1 4GB stick of RAM in. I have another 4 GB stick of ram(Same brand as the first one) . I know win 7 32 can't go over 4GB of RAM but was wondering if I put both sticks in will I get better performance
because it will be using dual channels or will it just MAX using the first stick and never see the 2nd becasue it is already using the full 4GB off the fist stick.

Thanks for your reply. I understand in reality I have really about 3.25 gigs. But if I had both sticks in would it be using all that 3.25 on one stick or would it split the 3.25 between the two sticks.
If you have 2 sticks of 2gig in run on dual channels I am told performance is better then just having 1 stick of 4 gig. I am just wondering if if I used the 2 4gig sticks which will only give me 3.25 gig will it use the dual Channel which would help performance.

  • Need help with Dual Channel DDR memory

Hi, I have a msi nvidia MOBO, K7N2G and it supports dual channel memory. The manual says to put one in 1 and one in 3. I did then it wont start. System gives the old beep.........beep.........beep. I have to patriot 512 ddr sticks. They work fine in slot 1 and 2 but not in "dual channel" mode. Do i have to do anything else in order to get these to work?? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    hi
    try slot 2&3.
    what brand of memory?
what speed is the memory working in?
there is no option to disable or enable dual channel.
just put them in slot 1&3 or 2&3.

  • 865P Neo With Dual Channel DDR

I just got my Crucial 2x256 DDR400/PC3200 ram modules today and installed them and they are working fine. When I bootup it says "Dual Channel/Linear." My question is what would be the best way to overclock this computer. I have an Intel 2.8GHZ processor with an 800MHZ FSB. I tried using Fuzzy Logic to auto overclock the computer but it just locks up. It didn't start locking up until I installed this ram. I was wondering if Core Center would overclock or just what would be the best way to overclock this computer. I want to be able to reach 3ghz. Please reply I appreciate anyone's help.

    Hi adamcn20,
Hmmm... To me... the Best way to o/c a system is always thru BIOS settings... As now you are running DDR 400 RAMs, be sure that you've set your settings to CAS 2-2-2-5/7-8burst and make sure that if you want stability lower them to run at 333MHz if not be sure that you've loosen enough stress off your RAMs at 400MHz...
    All the Best... :D!!!

  • [Other 865 Series] MSI 865PE Neo2-V and Dual Channel Mode Question

Hello, I have a quick question regarding dual channel mode with my current motherboard. I have an MSI 865PE Neo2-V and am wondering if it is possible to enable dual channel mode while having three RAM modules inserted in the motherboard.
For example, I currently have one 512MB PC3200 module in my computer. If I purchase another 512MB module and run them in dual channel mode, will it be possible to buy a 1GB module or another size module, and still have all three slots run in dual channel mode? Or is dual channel only operational on this motherboard if only two of the three slots are occupied?
    Thanks.

Dual channel requires an even number of sticks.

  • K8N Diamond - dual channel DDR in 4slots

    Hi everybody.
That`s my first post here and It would be great if you guys could help me. I recently have searched the forum for an answer but i couldn`t found any.
I have MSI K8N Diamond main board and i recently added
    Kingston ValueRAM 2x512MB 184Pin DIMM PC3200 DDRRAM Non-Parity CL3.
How can I make it work in dual channel mode with other two DIMMs. All four slots are full now - Before i put two DIMMs in first and third slot second and fourth slot was empty and it works fine.
All 4 DIMMs are the same.
Should I increase voltage somewhere in BIOS?
That`s the direct link to dabs.com where i bought this memory
    http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=2NDK
    I`ve got ATHLON 64 3700+
    I would appreciate any help.

    Thanks qyx.
Timing was set up at 2T. I increase voltage to 2.7V and restarted computer. It was still Single Channel Mode...maybe because i didn`t switch it off. Then  I switched off the computer and swap the modules in slots. 1st and 2nd ban kwith old ones and 3rd, 4th bank with new ones. Now it`s in dual channel mode. I`m confused because i don`t know what changes made them work in dual channel mode-my fault.....but it works fine....thanks a lot.
Bas, memory works at 200Mhz...befoure i bought other two dimms  i didn`t know that it will affects the speed
Need to learn more about all that "complicated equipment"
    Thanks again.

  • MSI GNB Max (MS-6565): insufficient voltage

I have just installed my new GNB Max, and got XP Pro up and running. Upon installing PC Alert 4, I recieved a warning that the +3.3V was actually sub 3V(2.9+V). What effect will this have? And what kind of Variance should I tolerate?
    Many thanks.

My GNB Max + Antec true power 430 read 3.33.
Sounds like a power supply not handling the load.
Acceptable tolerance in the PC industry is +-5% (3.135 is therfor the lower limit)

Need some imput on the front USB2 connecters. The user guide says "2".
Now I know one is on side of board ( JUSB1) but I'm not sure of the other
one. Is (JDB1) the other one ? Its where you plug in the D-BRACKET.
I have more use for it as a USB connection than the D-Bracket.
    Thanks

JUSB1 has pins for connecting two USB ports. Page 2-28 in the manual shows the pinout. See the link in Wonkanoby's signature for info on a jumper you may have to remove.

  • GNB Max temps and worries

Okies, I have a question / problem... maybe?
My MB, after being turned off for 30 minutes, on bootup, going DIRECTLY into the Bios, shows, under PC Health, a temp of 51C and climbs to 57..varying to..58.
Now I have the 3.06 GHZ Intel chip.
(No, I really don't care about anyone else's temp if they are overclocking or using something like a 2.4)
    No overclocking anything.
Bios 2.2 and I did as Asaaf suggested and changed the thingys to 134 and 1.525.
I have an Alpha PAL8942 - which is supposed to be a decent heatsink on the P4.
IS THIS NORMAL / USUAL or not? If not, then should I take the sink off and re-apply the Artic Silver and try for "better"?
Oh, and MB temp is at 41C. - But I didn't mess with tha because the fan came on the MB attached.
Thank you in advance for your response.

  • Anyone got "GOOD" sound out of GNB-Max 6565?

    Hello,
I'm getting a very lousy sound out of my 6565.  I tried all options such as with or without the S connector, 2, 4, and 6 channels, all possible inputs, different hardaware acceleration levels, etc.
The sound output is bad, and the microphone doesn't detect anything.  I've noticed that many people were having the same problem.  Does this mean that this MB requires a special speaker system?  Can't I use two speakers like old times and get stereo sound out of them without any software/hardware tweaks?
    Thanks for any help?

    Two legacy speakers

I have the same board but I didn't even try onboard sound.  My experience with onboard sound on other boards has made me just start with a good pci sound card (sound blaster audigy).  Every onboard sound I have tried either sounded bad or worse.  If the board had a creative chip on it you may get medium quality.  Don't waste money on new speakers to use with the onboard sound, spend the money on a soundcard.  Of coarse if money is not an issue you could buy both.

  • Very high temp. with GNB MAX

Hello, i have a problem with my MSI GNB MAX motherboard and my p4 3,06 ghz
My cpu temperatures are very high, with a maximum of 85/86c,,, is this normal??
Anyone else having a similar problem like this?
    MSI GNB MAX (ms-6565) motherboard
P4 3,06 ghz  processor with standaard p4 cooler

    (not overclocked)

If Vcor is 1.4 (I'm running 1.525 but reads 1.47 in PCAlert), AND fsb is set for 134, AND your HSF is running AND has good contact, there is no way for it to be that hot. The stock HSF is a pretty good part. I would suggest getting a temperature probe and touching it to the base edge of the HSF to see if you are really that hot. In Bios, I have the cut off threshold at 65C and alarm at 63C. I dont know the exact conversion but 86C is near hot enough to boil water. The laquer from the chip would probably begin to melt and create an odor.

  • Dual Channel memory problems on Neo 875P

I am having considerable trouble getting the NEO 875P to work with dual channel DDR400 DIMMs. I have two Kingston KVR400X64C25 DDR400 256MB memory modules, each of which works correctly by itself. However, once I move one
of the modules to channel B, I cannot boot my operating system (currently Windows XP.) The problem also occurs in Windows 2000, which I also have on the system. I receive blue screen errors that indicate paging/memory problems. I have upgraded my BIOS to the latest version (1.3)* in the hope that it would solve my problems, but it has not. The POST screen detects that there is 512MB of memory working in Dual Channel mode, but even when it does get through the O/S booting process (rarely), it crashes within minutes. Putting just one of the chips in makes the system perfectly stable. If anyone has any information, please let me know!
    Thanks,

    * My board was dead after trying to flash the 1.3 BIOS, but after about 10 attempts of using CTRL+HOME method to recover the BIOS, it finally worked with version 1.0. I then re-flashed with 1.3, and it rebooted fine. Are there any updates about all of the problems with v1.3 ?

    >I can only answer based on what I've read on this forum
I figured as much, I was just wondering if you knew whether MSI themselves frequents the forums or answers emails sufficiently.
I've had an interesting development though. I stumbled upon Tom's Hardware Guide's article about 875P motherboards at http://www17.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20030519/i875p-01.html
They mentioned that they needed to increase the memory voltage from 2.5 to 2.6 in the BIOS to get some memory modules to work. I did this, and for the first time, I am running in Dual channel DDR mode. However, the article also mentions that "the system does not run completely stably", so I guess I'll have to wait and see if it crashes again. However, I'm far enough beyond the XP splash screen to post this message, so I guess we're getting somewhere!
