Gnome 2.31 in gnome-unstable
Hello,
I hope this is also the right forum for the gnome-unstable repository.
Are there any plans, when Gnome 2.31 comes to gnome-unstable. Since Thursday 10th Gnome 2.31.3 is released and before the release of Gnome 2.30 there was Gnome 2.29 in the gnome-unstable repo.
Thanks in advance
I found several issues now
1) gnome-applets needs as dependency python-gnomeapplet
2) sound juicer can't start 'cause
sound-juicer: error while loading shared libraries: libbrasero-media.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
and brasero package has no file like this
3) empathy can't edit accounts
(empathy-accounts:32596): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "svg",
(empathy-accounts:32596): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "svg",
(empathy-accounts:32600): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "svg",
(empathy-accounts:32600): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "svg",
so I am not sure if working fine is good sentence

[Solved] [Gnome 3.4.1] Gnome shell not working.
After updating Gnome, it won't start. It is a bit weird because in xsession-errors I have this:
/usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libcogl.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I said OK. I can downgrade that package because I had libcogl.so.9. But after downgrading it wasn't working and in log was:
/usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libcogl.so.9: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I really don't know what to do. Btw Arch X86_64.

Gnome-online-accounts in gnome 3.2 not working[SOLVED]
gnome-online-accounts in gnome 3.2 is not working.it gives a bad token request.are other arch users experiencing this problem.
Last edited by PranavG (2011-10-02 15:52:33)There are issues with the proxy settings, and I had weird situations depending the network I was connecting...
When I use my wireless network I can use the online accounts correctly.
When I use a foreign wireless, mostly sure I can't.
And when I set a local proxy (e.g. pivoroxy) for https protocol, I get this error while adding the account:
http://www.mail-archive.com/desktop-pac … 25738.html
That could be solved just by issuing:
$ export https_proxy=
$ gnome-control-center
Hope this could be useful for you,
Regards,
EDIT: for some reason I wrote "I get this error will adding the account" instead of "I get this error *while* adding the account".

Gnome screensaver crashes on gnome startup
Hi,
As soon as gnome starts up Gnome Screensaver crashes. Gnome is versions 2.20.3.
Any ideas?

I thought that Gnome automatically started dbus. -
GNOME-Shell in Testing/gnome-unstable
I think there have to be some binary packages in testing/gnome-unstable. This mess on AUR is the hell with GNOME-Shell atm (07.10.09 15:30:17) it does not compile in any way.
i think when a git version is compiling and running the maintainer should package some binarys and put it into gnome-unstable or testing. Beceause it can happen that 5 minutes later nothings compiles anymoreI've also managed to build gnome-shell from git but am unable to runn the shell.
Here's the output:

GDM doesn't start after updating to gnome 3.8 from gnome-unstable
When booting, the system gets "stuck" in starting authorization manager and gdm doesn't seem to start (the system is useable though, I'm posting from a vc). Looking at the journal I got this:
mar 29 17:19:08 deepthought gdm-launch-environment][2505]: GLib-CRITICAL: g_variant_compare: assertion `!g_variant_is_container (a)' failed
mar 29 17:19:08 deepthought gdm-launch-environment][2505]: GLib-CRITICAL: g_variant_compare: assertion `!g_variant_is_container (a)' failed
Any ideas on how to proceed?
Starting gnome-session from with .xinitrc throws me a "something went wrong" message, even when I deleted my .local/share/gnome-shell, .config/dconf and .gconf dirs. It says something about not reaching tracker so maybe I'm just not starting it correctlyPhrodo_00 wrote:

[GNOME 3.4] gnome-shell overview search + gnome-documents - CPU 100%
Hello
When I type something in the gnome shell overview my CPU goes to 100% for a few seconds even after I left the overview.
The process which is taking my CPU is : gjs-console
With gnome 3.4 you can search for documents via the gnome shell overview, this search is based on gnome-documents. So I tried dis-installing gnome-documents and the problem was solved.
I don't know if it's a bug... but if the gjs-console really is the documents overview search process, it's strange that it doesn't stop when I leave this overview.
What do you think ? Should I report it as a bug ? Arch bug / upstream bug ?
PS : By the way, the gnome-shell extension "tracker-search" is faster and, I think, better for finding documents via the overview. This behaviour is the same in my box but I don't think it's an arch bug but an upstream issue (its not a bug formally speaking)... maybe it should be reported to the gnome-documents team in order they do more polish to it.

Edited gnome menus with Alacarte - gnome wont start anymore!
Hi!
First off; I've had this problem about a year ago, and the only thing that repaired it was to reinstall Arch... I made a similar thread at the time, but didn't get any help.
I use Alacarte to edit my gnome menus, but when I delete the items that I dont use, the next time I try to log into the computer, gnome wont start. It stops loading the desktop while the splash-screen shows, and I can see the mouse-cursor and conky in the background, but no menus or panels, and the splash-screen wont go away either.
Luckily, this time I had both openbox and gnome installed, so I was able to use openbox to write this thread.
Anyone got any tips on how to fix this without reinstalling my os?
CheersOkay so I found a way to work around this problem. If I create a new user it works again, BUT I want my old user back. If I delete my main user, and recreate it with the same username etc, will it use my old home directory with all my settings etc?

Cannot use byobu shotcut in gnome-terminal after upgrading GNOME 3.12
I cannot use byobu to create a vertical pane in gnome-terminal after upgrading to gnome 3.12.
The shortcut of creating vertical pane is Shift+F2. When I press these keys, there is `6~' showing
in the terminal.
I have tried this key binding in urxvt terminal. It still doesn't work. However, when I tried in Xfce-terminal,
byobu worked well.
Any ideas? Many thanks.nashamri wrote:
Okay I think I found a workaround, Byobu depends on tmux and the same issue is happening with tmux with Shift and all the function keys.
So to get things working, just set the env variable $TERM to "screen-256color"
$ export TERM=screen-256color
and then run byobu again. I'm not sure if this will break other things, I'll report back if I find anything.
Thank you so much for this workaround! I already discussed the topic here without any success: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=184603.

[SOLVED] DWM running with gnome difficulties - cracked leaving GNOME!
UPDATE: concept as a perceived requirement has been scrubed. No longer needing Gnome's environment ... just some gtk/gnome libraries here and there though, obviously. See last post of mine here if ya like and you're rushed a bit.
Having problems getting gnome to live with DWM though I can compile myself as i just learned how from the wiki.
OBJECTIVE: retain at least the bottom menu bar of gnome (and program access) for a while yet .... while using DWM.
Hi... having the most amazing time with Xmonad, awesome, stumpwm, dmenu etc.
At this point I've realized that Xmonad and DWM have basically the same keybinding.
For how it work WELL, as it's an originator, and keeping it simple ummm.... was it 18k or 180k? hehehe (see other posts about dwm) I'm going to go with dwm for the forseeable future. they're all great though having done the studying it's really a simple decision.... If I wanted to swap to something else later I'd have the skill to know how simple that would be... dwm does cover ALL of what I sensibly need to work quickly and SIMPLY/manageably...
DUE TO UPDATE COMMENT AT TOP - SOME OF THE NEXT COUPLE OF POST IS REDUNDANT a BIT though maybe not:
So... I'm wishing to be able to access my folders and programs through the gnome menu as a fail-safe until I figure out how to get around any gottcha before I reinstall WITHOUT gnome (just some of the libraries obviously for packages that need them)
I really need to get going immediately with DWM and having had lots of fun with Xmonad (works easily with gnome though i like the simplicity of default DWM) ...
ALL I really need is what I now have left of gnome's desktop visibility which is the bottom bar with a menu applet embeded in it...
Actually.... IF there's a way to GRAPHICALLY see folders ie. boot programs without having to find the binary though would be cool.
Gnome can do it's thing in the background.... though right now ALL I can get by adding DWM WITH metacity in the gnome sessions properties leaves me WITHOUT the bootom bar that gets me to my programs...
yep, duh.
any assistance apreciated as I can't stand working without dwm (or similar tiling wm) though I'm too new at it and generally not skilled enough at this move to get to my program's ICONS... using dmenu for all booting just isn't practical for me today.. then again who knows what the next hour will bring! hehehe
So..... ANYONE have DWM code that'll work??? .... I think I'd prefer it to be stock otherwise...
whatver happens thanks and everything's so cool.... have learned SO much....
Last edited by yvonney (2009-02-03 09:44:22)well as i remember, my own path was something like this...
Windozes -> PCLinuxOS -> (K-X)Ubuntu -> Arch(XFCE4(desktop environment)) -> Arch(Fluxbox(no DE)) -> Arch(wmii+gnu/screen) -> Arch(dwm+gnu/screen)
not talking about GNU/screen its like not talking about breathing to me right now at the beggining (like all i pass throught in GNU/linux) i can barely understand something "as complex" to understand like screen, but using it, showed me that EVERYTHING is a matter of understanding throught direct experience
so i'll recommend to you that you start looking to gnu/screen, is so damn easy to configure/use once you understand it, but difficult when you start reading about it, like dwm is in first place
what i do for file assosiations and such is using midnight commander (cli-file manager) and i edited a menu (F2 on a dir/file) and it popups showing the list of apps that i configured to open that file extension, i configured tuxcmd in the past but i didnt used it for months now...
here's the ~/.mc/menu i did... (i use urxvt as a daemon starting "urxvtd -q -f -o &" in .xinit, you may change "urxvtc" with your terminal emulator of choice... (i hope it will be urxvt(c) and not something like gnome-terminal )

Installing GNOME 2 instead of GNOME 3?
How might I go about doing this? I'm a fan of GNOME, but 1) my computer can't quite run 3, and I really like 2.
Is gnome 2 still available to me in the repos, or is this going to be a long and complicated process?Gnome 3 fallback is pretty similar to gnome 2 (you e.g. don't have the old applets) and should work on any pc gnome 2 would work on. You could theoretically still install gnome 2 in arch, using old packages, but it wouldn't be feasible in the long run. There is some project intended to continue developing and supporting gnome 2, with packages provided for arch, but the name escapes me. Many former gnome 2 users seem to be fond of xfce. Many distros still provide gnome 2, like linux mint, which apparently would like to stick to it - I'm not sure how they plan to go about it.

Gnome-clipboard-daemon. Gnome gets a *REAL* clipboard..

how many times did you sware because you closed the program where you did copy and now paste doesn't work?
well NO MORE.
Example:
1. Start AbiWord.
2. Type in 'hello world'. Select everything and click Copy.
3. Close AbiWord.
4. Start gedit.
5. Click Paste. Normally nothing will happen. But if GNOME Clipboard Daemon is running, pasting will work.
ArchGnomers enjoy!good!
but you have to find a way to daemonize it with GNOME.
It needs X running it cannot be daemonized by the DAEMONS array.
I had faced this with skippy (see forums here) but couldn't find a real solution to the problem [putting it after exec gnome-session in .xinitrc with skippy didn't work]
do you have any idea how do daemonize such stuff that need X?
can gnome-session-manager somehow execute some external programs? do you have ideas on this
EDIT: hmm ok. In the link that is given in skippy thread ( http://www.gnome.org/learn/users-guide/ … ion-2.html ) it is mentioned how to manually add Startup Programs in a Session. there one should put skippy and gnome-clipboard-daemon.
see here for more: http://www.gnome.org/learn/users-guide/ … session-12
you can always add an echo "do this and that" in the PKG but the point is now to find a way to do this with a script [if it's possible].
if it's not then
echo "Now you should add gnome-clipboard-daemon in your session.nTo do this: Applications Menu --> Desktop Preferences --> Advanced --> Sessions.nThere make sure you have ticked "Automatically save changes to session", then select Startup Programs Tab and add /usr/sbin/gnome-clipboard-daemon. Enjoy!" -
Arch Packages for Gnome 2.16 (was gnome 2.16 soon out!)
Gnome 2.16 is released 6 september! when does it come to arch? cant wait to be able to use gnome-power-manager.. used it before but now only old pkgbuilds exists.. tried to install newer version but failed...
btw i noticed something strange, I got 2800 in glxgears with XGL but with normal xorg i get 2200..

In any case, all gnome 2.16 modules should be out by this Wednesday.
The point is that a whole dbus migration to 0.9x/1.0 needs to be done, the current version of dbus has too many issues to get gnome working correctly (a simple pacman -S kde-common crashes all running dbus session bus daemons, which means your gnome-settings-daemon and all applets on your panel will crash with it, no way to start it again until you logout and login again, waiting for the next dbus config change...)
Dbus 0.9x/1.0 is way too tricky to just update. They split up the bindings and removed support for QT, so we have to patch up kdebase with patches from fedora and for the rest we have to track the big bunch of hidden packages that have dependencies on dbus.
thanks for clearing this up! i wondered why installing gnome-common always killed my running dbus related programs which was a little annoying when installing stuff that needs gnome in terminal since that one was quit during the install process too -
[SOLVED]gnome-online-accounts in gnome 3.2 doesn't work
When I try to add a new account, it gives a bad token request. This post describes the same problem that I'm having, but it doesn't show a way to fix it.
Last edited by medeshago (2011-10-18 00:37:14)I discovered the problem. The only thing that caused this error was that I had the clock with the wrong date and hour. I hope it helps you.

Gnome 3.2 (unstable) wallpaper and removable devices
hi Wonder,
A) Just installed gnome 3.2 from gnome-unstable. And I noticed that the default striped wallpaper is having too much contrast and it is visually unsightly unlike the default striped wallpaper in gnome 3.0 to 3.1.92.
Is there a change in wallpaper upstream? Cause I hate this too much contrast in the 3.2's default striped wallpaper.
B) I noticed "Removable devices" in the status bar after I upgraded to 3.1.92? I want to remove it. I rather like the gnome-shell-places-extension than this. Can I remove it?
thanks.aww, bad gnome decision, gnome's beauty is messed up! I reported a bug
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660291
Update: release team reverted the change... yay!
yay! gnome 3.2.0.2 reverts to old wallpaper.
