Gnome 3.16 Touchpad controls - Disable when typing

Hi guys
I'm running an old Asus Zenbook UX21E with an Elantech touchpad
I recently installed Gnome 3.16
I went to Settings > Mouse and touchpad
and much to my horror the option to disable touchpad when typing had vanished.
Any suggestions on why the setting is no longer present or some workarounds to implement it elsewhere?

I might have something!
The key doesn't exist anymore in the Gnome registry.
Here is a command to activate the feature : dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/peripherals/touchpad/disable-while-typing true
Basically, it will create the same key as in Gnome 3.14 and will set it to true.
It does, but even on a fresh login has no effect (for me, at least) in Gnome 3.16 with xf86-input-libinput installed. Apparently it's a bug.

My Pavilion zd 7379ea will only start up in battery mode. AC adapter appears OK with a firm green LED, so external power supply may not be the issue here? When I'm starting up (with what's left on the battery), both the charging LED and the AC LED are constantly blinking. When turned off, the battery LED is firm, and battery appears to be charging (but which obviously is not the case).  Occasionally, when computer is turned off, the AC LED is lit with a firm light.
One odd thing I noted before this happened was that the computer ran on AC only when my HP printer was connected to one of the USB ports (no battery inserted). If I disconnected the printer USB cord, the computer just died immediately; it was like the computer was powered by the printer. Later I also discovered that the same cord (where it connected to the printer) had melted from extreme overheating. I tried to update the USB drivers for each port but it didn't change things. I also tried to connect a different printer to get the computer started but it didn't work this time. I'd be extremely grateful for any comments that may solve this power supply issue (and if possible explain the stuff with the printer connection).

You unplugged a USB device while the notebook was still booted into Windows and on?
Normally that won't cause any issues but , If you did that you may have damaged your  system board's Southport chip.
USB is not a plug n' play port like SATA  and eSATA are.
Here is a link to the maintenence manual for your laptop series.
Is your notebook still within warranty? By the processor components listed in the manual,I believe it is probably not.

  • All View controls disabled when in Transform dialogue... WHY?

Transform Each.  A reasonably useful, if minimalistic dialog box disables ALL view controls.
    Including Zoom and Pan.
And of course the really useful stuff, like hide Bounding Boxes and Frames/Edges and Guides... they also don't work.
Why such a monochromatic and linear way of working in 2013?
Has Adobe spent NON of its record profits on hiring more programmers?
Are their any scripts that get around this heinous oversight, left over from what... 1995?

Again: The users here cannot tell you why. Illustrator is a very old and archaic program that has not kept up with the times. But you already know that.
    Or is there another explanation?
There are other speculations. Mine is simply that the user base continues to tolerate it. In the end, that's why. If you need further explanation, read on:
Adobe created PostScript in the 80s. Adobe has dominated the graphics industry ever since. So people buy Illustrator because it carries the Adobe brand. None of this has changed.
It becomes a self-fullfilling cycle. Newcomers buy Illustrator early-on assuming it is the "safe bet" because it carries the Adobe brand. As a result, most Illustrator users have very little experience with any other mainstream 2D Bezier drawing programs, if any at all. Longtime Illustrator-only users become increasingly vested in its archaic and cumbersome interface and fearful of having to apply that kind of learning effort to any other program. They--in self-protective turn--advise newcomers that it is the "professional" choice; the "safe bet."
    So the cycle repeats.
Illustrator-only users assume Illustrator's feature set to be "state of the art" for its software category. Adobe's marketing, of course, sustains this myth.
And a comedy of absurdity ensues. Literal decades pass before Illustrator users realize that "page 2" is not only possible but valuable in a drawing program. The year 2013 (and who knows how many more) comes and goes without Illustrator ever acquiring the most basic functionality of a proper set of basic live geometric shape tools. You are just discovering this. But it is nothing new. It's the way it's always been.
Adobe continues to market the same archaic functional underpinnings with occasional window-dressing changes of the UI skin. Functionality long taken for granted in other Bezier drawing programs is only occasionally added and even then in a half-baked fashion being hamstrung by devoted adherance to an outdated interface foundation which Adobe dares not change lest risk alienating existing users.
The interface becomes increasingly scattered, cluttered, redundant, inconsistent and old-fashioned despite its ever-changing stylistic facade. The resulting complicated confusion is perceived by newcomers as "powerful" and "full featured" thinking that must be why it's so unintuitve. They come here to ask "how" and to become vested in the highly esoteric learning curve.
    And the cycle repeats.
Other vendors try to capture/maintain market share by emulating the most prevalent interface schema in hopes of easing the "transition" to their products. They concentrate more on replicating the same old Illustrator functionality than on innovation, even when their interface foundations are superior. Illustrator's interface scheme becomes the defacto standard and the whole software segment stagnates in an endless cycle of "me, too" offerings.
Illustrator's domination thereby effectively holds the entire segment in decades-old lethargy. Users become adicted to the same old mediocrity.
Meanwhile, other graphics softwares in growth segments march on. The users of 3D modeling, for example, enjoy a plethora of different interface schemes, each competing to deliver both superior functionality and a superior user experience. The user base assumes a stance of versatility and adaptability and is less dogmatically defensive of a paticular software. Obtaining and maintaining working proficiency in multiple programs is considered the norm. And the category advances, becoming more powerful even while becoming more affordable (growth).
Energetic beginners devote their efforts to energetic developments: mobile apps and platforms, scripting, data-driven solutions, gaming. Open source innovates in terms of business model, if not in terms of software functionality, and delivers powerful apps at near zero price.
And everyone yawns at the 2D drawing segment and "yesterday's news" appears increasingly archaic as its stagnation continues. And it sadly continues to fail to achieve its yet-to-be-realized potential.
Eventually self-fullfilling cycles are broken. Eventually. The latest disturbance to this particular cycle comes from Adobe itself: It's self-defensive, self-perpetuating rent-only license scheme.
It is yet to be seen if this also becomes a trend with other software vendors, or if it breaks Adobe's stranglehold on the market. If tolerated by the user base, it certainly becomes more revenue-generating for the vendor (at least for a time) and self-perpetuating as customers willingly become entrapped by vendor-specific dependency. That lets the vendor deliver less value at same (or even less) cost, while maintaining same (or even higher) price. It's every software vendor's dream.
It's every monopolist's dream. It's every socialist's dream. And it works (for a time) if only enough customers are successully are suckered into it. But eventually, even Berlin Walls and long-distance phone call pricing schemes come down. The cost and pain of the self-protective, self-perpetuating cycle's end is directly proportional to how long its damage is allowed to continue. It's best to nip such cycles in the bud. But history proves that doesn't always happen.
So there's your reason "why": It's what the customers buy, driven by what they buy into.

  • Having touchpad auto disable when external usb mouse is present

Apparently as hardware and drivers change this feature got dropped. Just purchased a Probook 450 and was very used to my touchpad having the option to turn off when a external usb mouse (logitech wireless) was plugged in. This new system had no such feature and I spent several hours searching for a solution of reason why.
Finally found one I took a shot on that worked just like I was used too.  Now when usb mouse is inserted the pc pops up message saying touchpad disabled and when unplugged the touchpad comes back on and pc pops up message saying pad enabled. No software change. No hardware change. Just a simple registry edit and feature back on.
Seems after doing my searches I might as well share this info for those looking for the answer.
    ***disclaimers***
*make sure your usb mouse works before you do this because if it dose not and this fails to work or you do it wrong you may have no "mouse" to navigate with.
*warning- editing the windows registry is not something for the clueless*- errors can cause major problems that said this is a very simple simple fix and hp should just perma fix it for all synaptics touchpad laptops.
*can not test this with non synaptics touchpads tho it may work if you can find the registry entry for that brand*
*this was done on windows 7 system with Synaptics touch pad and my prior one was windows 7 and so was my wifes dell laptop, all Synaptics, all Windows 7- no clue on windows 8 or vista*
*if someone has found an easier fix post it because took me hours to even find this*
Windows 7 OS- Start menu- in the programs and files box at bottom type  "regedit" without the quotes and press enter.
Click ok to continue on popup box. Window comes up with your system registry. Expand the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" then expand the "Software" then down to the "Synaptics" and expand that one. Left Click on the "SynTPEnh" and to right will  open the sub entries.  The one your looking for is "DisableIntPDFeature".  Just write down the last two numbers in the (   ) at far right of this line incase this does not work so you can put it back to what it was.  Once you wrote it down, now you can change it- right click on the DisableIntPDFeature and a window pops up.  Left click on "Modify..."  then in new popup window on right side left click on decimal and in the window on left of this popup type in the numbers 51.  Left click OK once numbers entered and close it and and then close the whole application and reboot.  Done.  System should auto switch from usb mouse to Synaptics touchpad.
If it does not work I am sorry- follow the above steps and type back in the number you wrote down before the change and save and reboot or reinstall the mousepad driver for your system from hp.

  • VERY SENSITIVE TOUCHPAD CAUSING PROBLEMS WHEN TYPING MESSAGESS IN WINDOWS LIVE MAIL

The laptop was recently purchased new. Windows Live Mail was installed and a mouse is used.
In respondng to an email, new email or typing a message in a forum setting such as this, the entire text would disappear which was often before a complete sentance could be typed and could not be retrieved. This process would repeat itself over and over again.
A technical representative from the company that sold the laptop concluded that combined with a very sensitive touchpad,
a moving cursor arrow, shadow from the typing hand and lightly brushing the touchpad with the typing hand either singularly or in any combination were the likely causes of the problem. He then, using the software in the laptop, deactivated the tap function in the touchpad leaving all other functions in the touchpad in place.  This resolved the problem.
      -  Is there a device or software in the laptop that adjusts the sensitivity of the touchpad so that the tap function can be restored?
       - Is it possible that the combination of Windows 8.1 and Windows LIve Mail  is really the problem  and if so, how is this  determined and if necessary resolved?
-Is there a hardware / software malfunction in the laptop causing this problem?

  • I am unable to control my iPad 2. It is generating random letters when typing and when I try to delete it generates more letters unless I go slowly! Any advice?

I am unable to control my iPad 2. When typing and deleting it generates random letters! Any advice

Start with this and see how it goes. Quit all apps completely and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Allow Networking Disabled when Webpage Renders in an App Hosting Webbrowser Control

Was there a change with Security for Network requests for Flash player 11.4? I have a Windows Application that hosts the Webbrowser Control. When browsing webpages with Flash files that load external requests, the Flash ActiveX control does not load those external requests.  It is behaving like the page specified allowNetworking="none" on the <param> tags of the <object>, or the mms.cfg contains DisableNetworkAndFilesystemInHostApp - but neither of the two is specified.
I cannot replicate with Flash 10.4 but can replicate the issue with Flash 11.4 on Webbrowser Control for IE8 and IE9 and it is not webpage specific. I can replicate on the http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

If they actually did change anything with the Timer in 11.4 it will be in Release Notes. Here's 11.4's:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/release-note/fp_114_air_34_release_notes.html
Do note, 11.5 has been released. You can see the release notes for 11.5 here:

    Download AIR SDK 3.5 here:

I see no changes to Timer so that's not likely the issue.

  • Pavillion Dv7 7047-cl Laptop Touchpad jumping around after typing

The touchpad of my laptop has been messing up pretty badly recently. My laptop's touchpad will spontaneously jump around and randomly right/left click when I try to use it. This mainly happens after I finished typing something. The longer I use my Keyboard without using my touchpad, the longer my touchpad will go out of control. This does not affect usb mice, but if I continue to type with out using my touchpad, i can only type a few letters before my keyboard refuses to type. This is fixed after i move my touchpad, and next few letters of what I just typed will appear, sometimes stopping and repeating a letter, like thisssss. This works even I toggle the touchpad off with the button in the top left of the touchpad, so the pointer won't jump around but text will appear. I've searched my laptop for viruses, but didn't find any. Even typing this post has taken me over 10 minutes because of the on and off mouse -> type -> mouse -> type pattern. My driver is updated, and i've tried restarting my computer, but nothing works. Help!

    Try two things:
    1. Hard reset (remove battery and AC plug, hold down power button 30 seconds, wait 30 seconds, plug in power and restart) + go into BIOS (F10 as you power up) and restore default settings.
    2.  Try Touchfreeze or Touchpad Pal software. It disables the touchpad while you are typing:

  • Table Control: Disabling editing for a column

Hi everyone. Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
First of all, I want to apologize for this question in case of it has already been made. The forum is too large to read it completely and I really need the answer, if any, to my trouble.
I have a table control inside a screen. In it's PBO, I coded a module to change the table control attributes. I declared a work area like the line of the table control's control in order to loop it. I mean this:
In the TOP of Table Control (I made it by using the wizard) I have this:
CONTROLS: TC_1 TYPE TABLE VIEW USING SCREEN dynpro_number)
And in the PBO module I have typed the following:
    MODULE control_change_attrs OUTPUT.
DATA: wa_tc_1 LIKE LINE OF TC_1-COLS.
    LOOP AT TC_1-COLS INTO wa_tc_1.
    ENDLOOP.
    ENDMODULE.
In the (...), I have put code with such a logic that, depending of the contents of certain fields in the dynpro, it will hide (or not) some columns of the Table Control. This part is made correctly.
This logic, also makes (or should make) the table control to disable the input of a column, depending wether a flag is active or not. This flag is activated in other screen's PAI, which is called depending on the contents of the sy-ucomm field of this screen (the one with the table control).
The (...) is something like this (I'll omit some parts):
    IF wa_tc_1-screen-name = 'COLUMN_TO_HIDE'.
       IF gv_flag = 'X'.
          wa_tc_1-screen-input = 0.
       ENDIF.
       MODIFY TC_1-COLS FROM wa_tc_1.
    ENDIF.
In a PAI module of this screen, I have coded the following:
    MODULE user_command INPUT.
    CASE gv_ok_code.
       WHEN 'RUN'.
          PERFORM RUN.
        WHEN ...
    ENDCASE.
    END MODULE.
And in the RUN subroutine, obviusly among other things, I have this:
CALL SCREEN 0150 STARTING AT XX YY.
In a module in the PBO of the screen 0150, I clear gv_ok_code. In a PAI module, this is what I have put:
    CASE gv_ok_code.
       WHEN 'ACCEPT'.
          gv_flag = 'X'.
          CLEAR gv_ok_code.
          LEAVE TO SCREEN 0.
      WHEN ...
      WHEN ...
    ENDCASE
The thing is, when the contents of gv_ok_code is 'ACCEPT' and therefore the flag is activated, then the 0150 screen's PAI finishes and the previous screen's PBO is processed, I know for sure (by the mean of the debugging mode) that the table controls's atrributes are correctly modified, and the most important thing, they stay like that... But, the column desired does not gets disabled, at least not until the NEXT PBO (I mean, it gets disabled when I press the Enter key).
    Why is happening this?

Thanks a lot for the response, Max.
I' ve been testing your answer. When I implemented the code that you suggested, after the first PAI, the table control's columns appear as I want.
The thing is, in order to test if the changes in the columns are reflected in the screen after the call of the dynpro no. 0150 (and the obvious return to the first one), I need to be able to select one or more table control's rows (since when I followed the table control wizard, I made it with selection column, and with multiple selection). But, after implementing your code, I'm not able any longer to select any rows.
I click on them, but they don't turn yellow. I commented the call of the module inside the LOOP AT itab... of the PBO and I was able to select them once again, so we're sure the problem is caused because of the call to this new module. But why?
Note: you should know, since the table control is with multilpe selection, the LOOP sentence in the PBO is like this:
    LOOP AT itable
           INTO work_area
           CONTROL tc_1
           WITH CURSOR tc_1-current_line.
    MODULE change_attribs.
    ENDLOOP.
Does that give a hint to you?

  • U400 Touchpad not disabling after Windows 8 consumer preview installation

The u400 touchpad used to disable when i pressed the f6 key.  However, once i installed the Windows 8 consumer preview, the touchpad stopped disabling.  I installed the newest driver (the one released Feb 8) and still have no luck.  They funny thing is, when i press f6, a sign appears on the lower right corner that shows a disabled touchpad (touchpad with a line across it).  However, the touchpad still functions.
This is a pretty big issue for me since I find it nearly impossible to type comfortably without the touchpad being disabled.  (For example, my cursor jumped 5 times when typing this post)  I am sure I am not the only one with this problem.  Please help!  Worse comes to worst, i will reinstall windows 7, but if there is anyway to fix this problem, please let me know.

I didn't have exactly this issue but wanted to permanently disable but that was not going to be easy. Mine was hypersensitive and totally messed up any keyboard work. I called tech support and they installed new software to lessen the sensitivity but now when I push F6 key to disable, the icon you described keeps popping up every keystroke. These Lenovo guys are just useless and so sorry I bought this computer.

  • Re: Tecra M11 - Cursor jumps to random locaation when typing

Does anyone know how to switch off the trackpad when using a mouse, or advise on what the problem is - when I am merrily typing away, and I'm fairly fast, I suddenly find I am typing in the middle of what I typed already, instead of at the end of the line as normal. I cannot work out whether this is interference from the trackpad, or I am hitting something else in error! I tried switching off the trackpad using Fn F9 but it doesn't seem to work.... is there another way to disable it?
    Cheers all!

What is probably happening is your palm is touching the TouchPad while you are typing.
To avoid this problem, you can turn off the Touchpad completely, or simply turn off "Tapping" in the Advanced Touchpad Settings.

  • Satellite C50-A-1CK double characters appear when typing

    All
I have a brand new Satellite C50-A-1CK which is perfect for my needs EXCEPT I continually get double characters appearing on screen when typing which is:
    A. VERY frustrating
    B. Wasting a lot of time as I have to keep correcting words to remove the duplicate characters.
Please does anyone know of a fix for this? It can affect any key on the keyboard and it doesn't matter if I type slow or quick, press the keys firmly or as light as possible.
Have checked for firmware updates but none available.
    Thanks in advance!

The Touchpad issue you have I mayy be able to help with....
It sounds like you have the "Enable Edge Swipes" set on. This will bring up Windows 8 menu on the right hand side of the screen when ever you swipe from the right hand side of the keypad towards the middle.
Yours is a different model to mine but assuming the setting is in the same place then:
    open Control Panel
    Open Hardware and Sound
Under Devices and printers click "Mouse"
In the "mouse properties" window click on Device Settings
Highlight the touchpad and click the "settings" button below it
    De-select "Enable Edge Swipes"
    Hope this helps

Turn off the touchpad by pressing Fn+F9, or disable "Tapping" in the Advanced Touchpad Settings.

  • Touch pad buttons disabled when keyboard in use

That normally happens when the person typing has inadvertently tapped the disable area on the touchpad.
I do wish I could have been far more specific, but you only gave a general identification of your notebook instead of the complete product number or product name.
