Gnome 3.2 GDM problem

I just upgraded to Gnome 3.2, but this must have broken something related to GDM. When I should be seeing the login box I just get a dialogue box saying: Failed to load session "gdm-shell". Unusually, nothing turned up on google/the forums about this message. Ideas?
EDIT: Typo.

I am not able to use gdm after upgrading to gdm 3.2 . Gdm logs in as user 'gdm' everytime , I am not able to log out of user 'gdm' or swtich user. its really annoying, I tried installing xdm , its working correctly. I tried using the rc.conf daemon to run gdm but it gives the same result. I am using inittab to run gdm.  Right now I am using autologin to login to my user account. Can any one tell me what the problem is ?

  • Gnome 2.28 GDM Keyboard layout

    Hello,
    A few months ago I installed Arch + Gnome 2.26 and never had problems since then until I upgraded to Gnome 2.28. Now with the rewritten GDM the keyboard layout (for entering the username because I don't like select-your-user-from-the-list-thingies) is set to USA (qwerty) while the rest of my system is completely BE (standard, no variant) layout. Before the upgrade also GDM was 100% BE, but now the username is USA and when I want to enter the password it changes immediately to BE (because in the panel down I chose BE). Is there a way to also make the username respond to the BE layout?
    ==> What works in BE?
    TTY's
    password prompt of GDM
    gnome session
    terminals
    ==> What works not in BE and responds to USA layout?
    GDM username prompt
    How weird is that? My system is setup as described in the beginners guide (keyboard layout in 10-osvendor.fdi file + hal + evdev) which was system-wide until the update.
    I looked around and found some similar threads, but only complaining about keyboard variants, which is not my issue. Also on the Gnome forums, there is no-one with this problem. I checked all config files and XML files related to GDM I could found, but nothing helped.
    I noticed that with the Ubuntu Karmic Beta live CD, upon entering the keyboard layout from the boot screen, everything was BE as I want it to be. It proves to me it's all possible, but I can't find how.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    /etc/gdm/custom.conf is the file to configure gdm:

    there is no gui but for what we need a gui for that?
    That's very interesting, thanks for the link. Sure, it's possible that way, but a few weeks ago there still was a GUI for it and now everything has to be done manually again. That sounds very much like a regression to me Anyway, that's not really the point. GDM documentation pages tell us that the system keyboard layout is used to login and that every user logging in can choose their preferred session. However, our system languages (which are different than USA) are not detected correctly and there is no option to override this in custom.conf.
    /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/recent-languages
        [] (string list)
        Set to a list of languages to be shown by default in the login window. Default value is "[]". With the default setting only the system default language is shown and the option "Other..." which pops-up a dialog box showing a full list of available languages which the user can select.
        Users are not intended to change this setting by hand. Instead GDM keeps track of any languages selected in this configuration key, and will show them in the language combo box along with the "Other..." choice. This way, commonly selected languages are easier to select.

    Has someone the answer to the questions I asked earlier:
    1. Will I still be able to update gdm via pacman -Syu after rebuilding gdm with this patch?
    2. And will there come an official Arch GDM update with this patch to solve the problem or is the only way to get it solved dealing with the patch now?

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.2, gdm only show the default wallpaper

    Hi all,
    I just upgrade to gnome 3.2 on 2 machines, for the first one I got a glib2 from AUR so it do not work first (it's now solve) but for the second one I still can't login into gnome.
    Gdm only show the default wallpaper and a cursor.

    Solved.
    I had to enable KMS
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … Setting.29
    and remove my xorg.conf file.

  • Unable to start gnome-session or gdm

    Sorry for the vague title. I don't really have any specifics to go on for this problem.
    When I try to start a gnome-session through startx, I get a screen that says, "Oh no! Something has gone wrong", with no error outputs in xsession-errors.
    First off is some system info. I'm running a Thinkpad T540p:

    I'm pretty lost now. I finally managed to get X working on my Nvidia/Intel combination with twm, but it refuses to work with gnome-session.
    Any ideas?

    Same problem for me too!
    After kernel update on restarting GDM try to start but fails. I've last nvidia-173xx driver installed.
    I've solved the problem forcing nvdia driver reinstallation. This is my Xserver log!

  • [SOLVED] GNOME3: gnome-session and GDM won't start

    Whoops, had to -Syu.
    I'm trying to start GNOME3 in two ways,
    1) exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session in .xinitrc
    2) Through GDM (/etc/rc.d/gdm start)
    When I try to startx I get this error
    gnome-session: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libdconfsettings.so: undefined symbol: g_main_context_invoke
    When I try to use GDM I get a number of these lines
    gdm-binary[5891]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 1.784000 seconds
    and
    gdm-binary[5891]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors

  • GNOME 3.2 [GDM] brightness level at minimum by default?

    After I updated to GNOME 3.2, I noticed a strange problem;
    When I boot I just get a blank (black) screen and no GDM! - But when I adjust my brightness to maximum I can see GDM as usual and everything is working as expected.
    I did a little research, but found nothing...
    I tried to reset my gnome settings to defaults, but that doesn't help...
    I never had such problem using GNOME 3.0.x
    Any ideas?

    After trying a lot of stuff in many configuration files, this was the best solution for me:
    Adding the following line to /etc/gdm/Init/Default :
    xbacklight -set 80
    before exit 0 of course. Hope this helps
    PD: If somebody finds the way to determine whether or not we have the AC adapter plugged in (so we can add to the script a nice conditional ), please, tell me.

  • Gnome 3.16 GDM doesn't show available users

    Hi,
    since the latest Gnome 3.16 update, GDM doesn't show my available users. My users are LDAP users and I can sign-in with them. If I sign-out with an already logged in user then GDM shows the list of available users. I've also the problem that the avatar I've chose for my user will not be saved. Every time I sign-in I must chose the picture again.
    The log shows no abnormality. Does anyone have a suggestion or a similar problem?
    Cheers,
    Christian

    Same problem for me, I've tested with LDAP and Winbind users, without success.
    I can login with the "not listed" link and typing the username manually, but it's a real pain.
    The strange thing in fact, is that the users list appears after the first logout.
    Someone with an hint?
    Thank you.

  • Gnome App "Covers" Screen Problem

    I have recently noticed a problem with my Gnome installation. When I start up the machine and log in (I use GDM), If I don't touch the keyboard or mouse after entering my password, the screen will look as if a semi-transparent application starts and covers the entire screen. I run Compiz and have alpha-transparencies blurred. Through the blur I can see the clock in the panel still ticking off the seconds, etc. If I move the mouse, the screen returns to normal. If I wait until the screensaver starts, the screensaver acts normal, and moving the mouse after that results in normal operation as usual.
    I have tried to find out what app (or setting) is responsible for this, but have no more ideas. I have tried:
    1) Running "top" as soon as I log in, but then (since I have touched the keyboard and/or mouse) the problem never occurs.
    2) I have checked for a "hidden" startup app or daemon and can't find anything. I checked both ~/.config/autostart and in the Gnome Startup Apps.
    Does anyone have any other ideas about how to find out what app is doing this?
    Here is a screenshot of what I see:

    What if you run a little script that opens a terminal and runs top automatically at login?

  • GNOME PAM keyring / GDM auto login / NetworkManager Trouble

    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=40553
    I followed that post and was able to get gnome pam keyring automatically unlock my keyring password upon
    logging in manually from GDM.
    However, it does not work when I set up GDM to automatically login. NetworkManager prompts me for keyring password. Is it possible to fix this?
    Thanks.

    See Edit ...
    I had this problem for my parent's computer (they can't remember any password and that set them mad !) but I finally managed to do what I wanted :
    I follow the post to enable pam_gnome_keyring.so here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=40553
    Then, right at login, in gnome's administration panel, (or System>Administration) go to "Password Manager". There is a new set (or keyring, I don't know how it's named in english) named 'login'. You will see that the "default" keyring isn't unlocked. Click on it and it will ask for password. In this prompt, there is a new option : "Unlock this keyring when I log in". Check it !
    Edit : OK, I rebooted and setting where all gone... It doesn't work. It's getting me mad... When will GNOME guys work to simplify our lives ? KEEP IT SIMPLE (, you) STUPID !

  • Automount Issue on Gnome 2.28: GDM Mounts USBs after 2nd Insert

    Good evening everyone (at least, it's evening here at my part of the Universe),
    I have been using Arch for the past month (and Ubuntu/Debian for two years) but am totally stumped on this odd behavior.
    When I first installed Gnome, I got that 'Permission denied' dialog box everytime I tried to mount a USB, but quickly realized that it was because of the wrong exec line at the start of my .xinitrc. When I changed it to
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
    I thought everything would be fine. However, for a USB to automount, I have to insert the USB TWICE. I don't know why. The first time, it's detected by 'lsusb', but not by Nautilus (it doesn't even show up in the Computer directory).

    Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
    Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
    Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

    Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
    In this case, it's the Power Quotient International USB that isn't being read. When i remove the USB and put it back, it automounts.
    I have checked previous threads and most of them discuss the 'Permission denied' issue, which is not the same as this one :( I have also checked the 'I Won the Struggle Between HAL and PolicyKit' - I don't think I have the same problem.
    I have installed gnome-volume-manager.
    I have tried this issue on another user account, but it's still the same - takes 2 inserts of the USB to make it mount.
    I am a member of the storage and power groups.
    If there are any other logs that I should show, I would be happy to show them, but am unsure if I should post PolicyKit files (I'm not sure which one is in charge of drive automounting, I'm sorry) or if I should post my HAL configuration file, but so far I have checked my HAL config file and it is configured as was written in the HAL wiki.
    If someone could please point me in the right direction of what file(s) to look at (is this perhaps a HAL issue? or Xorg? or PolicyKit?) I would be happy to look into it again and post the appropriate files.
    Thank you very much! :)

    @Allan:
    Good point. That was a bit far fetched to say; I'll admit that. I should've looked at a roadmap or something. Maybe I was just unclear as to how much work distro developers were putting into customizing their rendition of gnome. Was unaware that installing a vanilla version of gnome would be unstable, wonder how the devs of gnome feel when working on a vanilla code base. .. oh well.
    @smakked:
    Maybe something's like window positioning is a little obsessive compulsive of me but that functionality was available in 2.26 and below; that's maybe why it seems unfinished or something. I'm not a n00b in any sort, I respect and understand opensource and such. I know that my post above sounds rather complain-oriented, but in all honesty, It's very MS like that newer software doesn't work as well (and sometimes worse) than previous versions. I just love gnome and can't use it because of some simple features that were taken away/ are not working.
    @Both of you:
    Creating a tab in nautilus then dragging the tab, segfaults nautilus. GDM segfaults if trying to log into gnome-session when the user is not part of 'wheel' ... just stuff like that. I've pulled the gnome packages on 3 different boxes (and 3 different CURRENT mirrors)... same issues. I know how to manage groups and permissons and basic packages to make arch work.
    So, I'm very sorry to sound annoying or anything of that nature. I was mainly curious if anyone else is having issue / knew a way to fix them. I know most arch users love *box window managers and the like, but SOME of you have to have gnome and notice things like that. lol. Anyways, It's clear that I might get talked down to on here or might get accused of being pedantic when things don't work. Thanks anyways guys.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME 3.16 + GDM Login & Background Image

    It's being surprisingly difficult to understand what's needed in order to have a login screen that does not contain the default noise PNG as background.
    Apparently now the default theme is a gresource so common css overwrite don't seem to make it.
    How did you folks solved this problem?
    Apologies if already discussed, it's just that the problem is NOT the GNOME Desktop Background, and NOT the lock screen, just ONLY the gdm background screen during login.
    Other tricks seem to not work neither:
    sudo -u gdm dbus-launch gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver picture-uri '/new/picture.png'
    Thanks for any sort of help with this and Best Regards

    I finally got this to work. The wiki needs updating as of now it only states that gnome shell theme is now in a binary format, but not how to extract and repack it afterwards...
    Anyway this is how i got it to work.
    Use this script to extract gnome-shell-theme inside your choosen working directory
    extractgst.sh
    #! /bin/sh
    #change workdir to suit your system
    workdir=/home/merlin/temp/GS/test
    gst=/usr/share/gnome-shell/gnome-shell-theme.gresource
    mkdir theme
    for r in `gresource list $gst`; do
    gresource extract $gst $r >$workdir${r/#\/org\/gnome\/shell/}
    done
    Once you've run the script you should have the theme extracted to the theme folder which was created inside your workdir.
    Now you can proceed to add a background image to this folder and edit gnome-shell.css by following the wiki page.
    You must now create the file gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml inside the theme directory. Simply copy paste the xml code below into  gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml,  making sure to change the line that refers to your background image. On my system the background image is named login-background.jpg
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <gresources>
    <gresource prefix="/org/gnome/shell/theme">
    <file>calendar-arrow-left.svg</file>
    <file>calendar-arrow-right.svg</file>
    <file>calendar-today.svg</file>

    <file>gnome-shell-high-contrast.css</file>
    <file>logged-in-indicator.svg</file>
    <file>login-background.jpg</file>
    <file>more-results.svg</file>
    <file>no-events.svg</file>

    <file>page-indicator-inactive.svg</file>
    <file>page-indicator-checked.svg</file>
    <file>page-indicator-hover.svg</file>
    <file>process-working.svg</file>
    <file>running-indicator.svg</file>
    <file>source-button-border.svg</file>
    <file>summary-counter.svg</file>
    <file>toggle-off-us.svg</file>
    <file>toggle-off-intl.svg</file>
    <file>toggle-on-us.svg</file>
    <file>toggle-on-intl.svg</file>
    <file>ws-switch-arrow-up.png</file>
    <file>ws-switch-arrow-down.png</file>
    </gresource>
    </gresources>
    now the only thing left to do is to run
    cd ./theme
    glib-compile-resources gnome-shell-theme.gresource.xml
    It will create a gresource file that you can swap in /usr/share/gnome-shell.
    Good luck and hopefully I will save many some headache. Took me quite a while to get the whole thing working

  • Dual screen GDM problem

    I have a rather big problem with my dual screen setup. The left screen is 1920x1080 and the right one 1360x768.
    This is my /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-0"
    Option "Primary" "true"
    Option "Position" "0 0"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-1"
    Option "Position" "1920 180"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1360x768"
    EndSection
    I set it up as described here. However, GDM doesn't behave as normal, but gets stuck with a slightly dimmed default GDM background (the one with the blue stripes) on the first screen and a crazily flashing second screen. I never even get to the login prompt.
    If I plug the second screen out before the computer boots, GDM starts normally. I can then plug it back in as soon as the GNOME Shell panel has appeared. If I do this before the panel is visible, I get two screens full of graphics errors (a mess of blue/magenta/white squares).
    As soon as the second screen is plugged back in, I can immediately use it and drag windows back and forth, however, the "Position" setting in xorg.conf is ignored, i.e. the height is shifted. I can solve this by entering this in the terminal:
    xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --output DVI-1 --mode 1360x768 --pos 1920x180
    I hope someone can help me with this. I just want to be able to log in and use the second screen straight away. By the way, if I log out, GDM doesn't seem not have any problem with the second screen: I can log back in normally.
    Thanks in advance!

    Archimaredes wrote:I don't have much experience with this, so forgive me if I'm wrong, but should that not be 1080, instead of 180?
    Thank you, but "180" actually means that the upper border of the 2nd display starts 180 pixels below that of the 1st one. The number may be a bit misleading, but it is how my displays are physically set up.
    olive wrote:If gdm cannot behave properly, you can simply disable the external monitor in xorg.conf
    This is a fabulous idea, I hadn't even thought about this! Launching the xrandr command at the start of the GNOME session is really easy with gnome-session-properties.
    I tried disabling the 2nd display, but it just ignores the line and starts with GDM flashing like usual. This is my xorg.conf:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-0"
    Option "Primary" "true"
    Option "Position" "0 0"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1920x1080"
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "DVI-1"
    Option "Position" "1920 180"
    Option "PreferredMode" "1360x768"
    Option "Disable" "true"
    EndSection
    If I could get this to work, this would be a wonderful workaround.

  • Gnome-gmail-notifier [libsoup problem]

    Hi,
    I am trying to orphan the package gnome-gmail-notifier, but i ran into this problem. I only edited the PKGBUILD to match the new version and edited the download link. Now i am having some problems running ./configure
    No package 'libsoup-2.2' found
    Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
    installed software in a non-standard prefix.
    Alternatively, you may set the environment variables libsoup_CFLAGS
    and libsoup_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
    See the pkg-config man page for more details.
    make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
    ==> ERROR: Build Failed.
    If i understand it correctly , it is looking for the libary libsoup wich in arch is called libsoup
    /usr/lib/
    libsoup-2.4.so
    libsoup-2.4.so.1
    libsoup-2.4.so.1.2.0
    How could i let the ./configure use libsoup-2.4 as libary?

    The problem is that gnome-gmail-notifier needs libsoup 2.2 while in the repo we have libsoup 2.4. Gnome-gmail-notifier needs to be patched to build/work with the latest libsoup. Try googling, maybe there's a patch available.

  • [SOLVED] gnome-screenshot in gnome3 problem

    Hi,
    When I try to take a screen shot using printscr, or in the command line using
    gnome-screenshot
    I only get a picture of my background.
    $ gnome-screenshot
    ** (gnome-screenshot:1908): DEBUG: The GetProfileForWindow request failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
    The same thing happens with gcolor2:  When I try to grab a color from a window it returns the color
    from my background instead.
    Using gnome shell's screen cast functionality works just fine.
    Any ideas to how I can fix this?
    Thanks!

    Removing
    Option "Shadow" "True"
    from my xorg configuration solved the problem.
    I enabled this option earlier to troubleshoot a freezing problem (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … tel_driver).
