Gnome 3.2 : no Empathy icon in the systray ?

Hi !
Since I have upgraded to Gnome 3.2, I do not have the Empathy icon in the systray (bottom right of the screen) anymore.
So, if I close the Empathy window, it goes somewhere, but I don’t know where, and if I want it again, I have to re-launch Empathy.
That is very annoying ! Do you all have the same ? Thank you for your attention.

I'm not sure about Empathy. It seems like it is not running (and connection is managed by Gnome itself) but while chatting, empathy chat window is opened.
I very much like the concept of this, although I use only one chat connection (ICQ which is the most popular here in CZE, that's why) so I cannot really appreciate it. I kinda miss Empathy window, which is very clean and well arranged - all I need is to see sorted contacts by status (online, busy, off etc.) Of course I can start it, but..
Gnome-contacts window looks, well, not very nice and I also miss opening chat with doubleclick.
And is there a way to set an announcement (that bottom pop up) if selected contants change status to online? That would be nice.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome: No network icon in the status bar

So fresh install and no networking icon in the status bar.
I also opened the network connections program and it didnt show any connections. I am using eth0 to write this.
This suggests to me that a daemon hasnt been started (but doesnt necessarily explain no icon in status bar)
here is the daemon section of my rc.conf
DAEMONS=(hwclock syslog-ng network netfs crond networkmanager dbus gdm)
i added network manager as a previous attempt (on advise of someone elsewhere on the internet(cannot remember where lol))
Thanks.. I have nearly got my system how I want it (minus software i havent installed yet)
Sorry if i have created a duplicate thread

    Thanks to both of you.
I had already noticed the redundancy of network which was added in the install however hadnt considered the ordering

This is pretty much all i have seen people saying at the end of their posts on here. I agree with the point you have made, however i have been on the wiki all day, conisdering this is a newbie forum it is to be presumed that it is a pretty new installation. Therefore the user does not have time to read the entire wiki. As i said i have been on the wiki all day and used it countless times and have found it invaluable, so im only posting here when i am unable to find answers there.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.6: Battery/power icon missing from panel

I've recently ressurected an old Arch laptop that had been lying dormant for a year or a half. Everything's been brought up to speed (pacman -Syu plus a lot of systemd study) satisfactorily except I've noticed that the battery/power icon on the panel is missing. Due to the long time since the install, I have no idea if this is due to an error or some old brilliant idea setting from my side a year or more ago :-(
    What I've tried:
    * Disabling all extensions (a lot of posts about the system monitor extension causing this -- I've never used it). Extension turn off registers but still no battery.
    * Checking htop and gnome power  statistics to see if the system knows about my battery. Both report in detail about the battery.
    * Checking /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/panel.js to see if the power applet had been excluded somehow. Nope, it's listed.
    * Checking dconf to see if I could find some setting there. Ubuntu user posts led me to org.gnome.power-manager but unlike those users I found no setting relevant ("icon-policy")
    * Checking gnome settings and tweak settings. Found nothing that seemed relevant.
A lot of posts about this pops up around gnome 3.2 which apparently had a bug with this problem. I'm not sure what version gnome-shell was before the update but currently it is 3.6.3 and the laptop has been rebooted and had gnome-shell restarted any number of times since then.
    Any suggestions?

    Good point, WonderWoofy.
I created a guest account and found the icon on the panel when I logged in as guest. A bit of guessing located the problem to my dconf database and using gsettings to locate any power/battery-related settings pointed me to
    org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power
which had been deactivated. Clicking 'Active' and restarting gnome-shell solved my problem.

  • Gnome 3.4 Missing Desktop Icons

I've got the latest version of gnome 3.4 installed along with gnome-tweak-tool. In gnome-tweak-tool I've got Have the file manager handle the desktop set to on. However, when I log out and log back in again there are no icons until I fire up nautilus manually at which point it draws the desktop icons. How can I make it so that the icons are there when I log into gnome without having to fire up nautilus manually first please? Many thanks in advance.

I'm not really at home in Gnome 3, but here's my two cents:
Open dconf-editor (Alt+F2 and enter 'dconf-editor') and be sure 'org > gnome > desktop > background > show-desktop-icons' is checked...
If not, do so and restart the shell...
If it is already checked, I'm kinda out of inspiration...

  • Gnome 3.10 and Awoken icons

As of gnome 3.10 I can't get the awoken white icons to appear. Only icons I can get to appear are the default awoken icons. Running the `awoken-icon-theme-customization-dark` script does not seem to change anything. Anyone knows how to fix this?

    Same here!
Would be nice to find a solution.

  • [Gnome-Shell] Seeing that Thunderbird icon always

    Hi,
when receiving a mail when I am not at the computer I won't see directly that I got one. Just when going down with the cursor that forces that panel at the bottom to appear. There is my Thunderbird icon notifying me that a mail was received.
But I like to see it all the time like in Gnome3-Fallback when that icon was always at the top panel in the notification area. Is there any way to see that icon always without clicking/moving somewhere?

    Hello,
there is a extension tutorial, that shows how to make the gnote icon always visible by moving it to the top tray. You should be able to port it to thunderbird.
    See: http://blog.fpmurphy.com/2011/05/more-g … ation.html
Edit: I set it up myself here (with gnote though, just replace all gnote calls with thunderbird). It looks like this:
    $pwd
    /home/username/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/[email protected]
    $ls
    extension.js metadata.json
    $cat extension.js
    const StatusIconDispatcher = imports.ui.statusIconDispatcher;
    function main() {
    StatusIconDispatcher.STANDARD_TRAY_ICON_IMPLEMENTATIONS['gnote'] = 'gnote';
    $cat metadata.json
    {"shell-version": ["3.0.2"], "uuid": "[email protected]", "name": "gnotetop", "description": "Moves the gnote icon to the system status bar."}
There is also in interactive extension tool that ships with gnome-shell. Invoke it with gnome-shell-extension-tool --create, it will do most of the setup for you.

  • ArchWiki Gnome Tips! Convert svg icons to png?

Hey, I was reading this ArchWiki page,
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNOME_Tips
    and I came across this:
"Due to an improper coded GNOME drawing library, some actions in GNOME can slow the system. If the theme icons are in SVG format, they make the system slower. A very fast improvement is to either use icons in PNG format or to convert the used icons into the PNG format."
This is however all that is said there.
I would like to know a few things:
    a) Is this comment only valid for older versions of Gnome, or is it still valid? [I am running the fully upgraded Gnome as is available in the repositories.]
    b) Are we talking about substantial performance increase here or is just tweaking for the heck of it? [Even though I love that a lot myself, but this is for information. ]
    c) I have no idea, how to convert svg icon libraries to png. So if we decide that it is indeed beneficial to be doing this, it would be great if someone could redirect me to how to change these svg icons to the png format.
Thanks a lot for the help [apprehended! ]

hey I just thought of another question, because I converted my svg icons to png using lolilolicon's method!
    d) how to i tell gnome to use those icons instead of the svg icons. where and what settings do i have to change for this to be possible?

  • When I drag and drop an icon from the address bar to the desktop is does creat the shortcut but will not display the website icon, only the firefox icon, how can I display website icons?

When I drag and drop a website icon from the Forefox address bar to the desk top, the short cut is created but the icon that appears is the firefox Icon. I want to disply the icon from the website that the short cut refers to. I have checked all I can think of in my computer to no avail.

You have to assign the favicon yourself to the desktop shortcut (right-click the shortcut: Properties) after you have dragged the link to the desktop.
You can usually find the favicon in Tools >Page Info > Media and save the icon there.
Otherwise use the main domain of the website and add favicon.ico (e.g. mozilla.com/favicon.ico ) to display the favicon in a tab and save that image to a folder.

  • How do I add the Displays icon to the Menu Bar?

In prior OS on my iMac, I was able to add the Display icon to the Menu Bar, making it a quick fix to adjust the resolution.  That option no longer appears in the Display section of System Preferences.  I am using multiple displays.  Could that make any difference?  Any suggestions?

  • How do I select which bluetooth speakers to play out of? My iPod connects to both kitchen and living room speakers. My old iPod had a selection icon on the now playing screen, but my new one doesn't.

    Hi,
    Our setup
A new iPod Touch 5 with iOS 8.3.
Living room speakers that use a Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter.
Kitchen speakers that use an AmazonBasics Bluetooth 4.0 Audio Receiver.
The iPod connects to both but always wants to play to the kitchen. To play in the living room, we have to unplug the power to the kitchen speakers. Bluetooth settings screen doesn't let you select between Bluetooth connections. All I seem to be able to do is forget the connection.
We also have an old iPod Touch (not sure of the generation, but it has iOS 6.1.6). On that one, there is a little icon on the now playing screen that would open a little pull-down menu to let you select which Bluetooth connection to use for playing audio.
I don't see the "select output" icon on the new now playing screen
    Jimmy
PS the iPod seems very aggressive in connecting. I hear the living room speakers activate when my wife gets out of the car in the driveway. Then as she comes into the living room, the sound switches to the kitchen.

Thanks, this was the clue I needed to figure it out.
From Settings you can pull up Control Center.
In Control Center you can enable "Access from within Apps" (also "Access from Lockscreen")
Now when I'm playing music, I can swipe up from the bottom and a little control center window slides up. Neat - this is new since my old iPod. On this window, the name of the current Bluetooth connection appears. Tap on that, and a list of connected Bluetooth items appears. I just tap on the one I want to connect to and I am now playing through the speakers I want.

  • Downloads of updates not saving, no prompts or icons in the Application folder-how do I ensure updates are saved?

I am following the instructions to download v 6 but receive no prompt to move the Firefox icon to the applications folder. I have done that anyway, but it's not saving-the latest version is July 11. I then get reminders to update all the time-what am I doing wrong?
I am working on a Mac laptop

A lot of people panic when they see Photoshop displaying differently from other software. But that's normal and expected. Here's what happens:
    1. Photoshop is color managed and performs a document profile > monitor profile conversion when it displays. So whatever the document profile is, Photoshop will display correctly - unless you have CM policies set to "off" (...!)
    2. Other applications, including many web browsers, aren't color managed and will just send the file numbers directly to the display. This distinction is extremely important, because there will be a slight difference. Again, that's normal. Photoshop is right and the other apps are wrong.
    3. Without color management, it all hangs on how your monitor displays color. Most monitors are so close to sRGB that any sRGB file will display roughly correctly. This is why sRGB is the de facto web standard: it can live without color management. And that's why you should always convert web material to sRGB. Yes, that's the Edit > Convert to Profile option. You can also use Save For Web to do this if you check the appropriate boxes.
