Gnome 3.6 - Desktop Icons on Secondary TwinView Screen?

Hi,
I have dual monitors using Nvidia twinview and in previous Gnome iterations nothing has prevented 'free dragging' of desktop icons to anywhere, on any screen. However in 3.6.2 they seem to be locked to the primary monitor only. Does anyone know if this is configurable, a bug, or yet further reduced usability?
Many thanks

Very interesting.  I did all that you suggested - and in the end - the icon text was still black.  However - I got to playing around and discovered the source of the problem.
It is the GTK+ Theme.  If it is set to any GTK+ theme other than the default 'Adwaita' - the icon text is always black.  However, it works correctly - white - with Adwaita.
So - I surmise that something changed in how Gnome 3.2 uses GTK+ - or something in GTK+ itself.  Perhaps Wonder may have some perspective on this ... I hope.

  • Hide desktop icons on secondary monitor?

I have these command scripts in my Dock and click on them when I want to hide or show desktop icons:
    defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop false
    killall Finder
    defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop true
    killall Finder
It works great. My question is, how do I write these so they hide the desktop icons on my secondary monitor?
    Thanks!

Never mind... restarting fixed the problem.

  • Gnome 3.2 desktop icons text color

I am running Gnome 3.2 with Gnome-Shell - but I have "Have file manager handle desktop" enabled.  The text under the icons on the desktop is Black.
Does anyone know where that info is stored and/or how to change the color to white?
    Thanks.

  • Desktop icons go off the screen

My son was most likely trying to play a game and I am thinking he changed the screen somehow. Now, my screen icons go off the page. My menu bar at the top alos moves so the time, etc., are not fixedin the top right corner. Where do I go to change this.
    Mac OSX
    Version 10.6.7
Many thanks to anyone that can help me with this.

Try going to System Preferences - Universal Access and set Zoom to Off.
BTW you probably want to change your profile, it says you're using 10.6.4 which I'm guessing is incorrect.

  • My desktop icons are no longer "app related" - no colour!

Hi there. I used a little app called Font Nuke because my Word docs were taking some time to open up and this seems to be font-related. As a result of this, upon the restart, my desktop icons which represent pdf, jpeg, .doc and .xls are all black & white, and the text of all my desktop icons and folders is now looking fuzzy as well as strangely placed. Hmmm. I closed all apps and removed the com.apple.finer.plist doc from my preferences, rebooted, and the problem continues. I see that zooming my desktop icons from 28 (preferred size) to 76 solves the issue, but nobody wants a desktop icon on a laptop screen to be so large. What the......? is going on???? Grateful for any advice on this one! Thanks.

Delete Font Nuke and run this one-line command in the Terminal app, OPTION-click the Finder's Dock icon, and select Relaunch.

  • BB Desktop icon on PC

With my BB8520 I received a disc which I could download onto my PC. Now bought a BB9320. Downloaded BB 7.0 version onto PC but cannot access it or put it this way I am not that computer literate. Deleted the original Desktop 5.0 version. How can I put a BB desktop icon on my PC screen as I have to search for the file each time & I don't know how to make my backups on the 7.0 version.

Firstly, with my BB8520 I received a Blackberry User Tool CD for the Blackberry Desktop Manager & V5.0.1 was applicable at that stage.
I now have a BB9320 Curve but this phone never came with the BB User Tool CD. I've subsequently downloaded the latest Blackberry Desktop Manager (710_b042 multilanguage). Now this is where I get stuck - everything is zipped.
Now my first question - How do I make my backups using the latest version?
Question two:- With the CD loaded onto my desktop pc I HAD a Blackberry Desktop Manager icon on my screen. How do I create an icon again on my desktop pc with the latest version.

  • Gnome 3.16 & Wayland: double-click no worky and no desktop icons/menu

I understand Wayland and Gnome are getting closer to "finished", and indeed my laptop's touchpad (HP Folio 13) now detects taps as primary mouse clicks, which is a marked improvement over 3.14, where taps weren't detected at all. Couple of issues stop it being "daily use" for me at present however:
    1) Despite "Test your settings" correctly showing "double-click primary button", the double-click isn't working as it should in Nautilus/Files i.e. double clicking or double tapping on a folder icon fails to open said folder. Interestingly double-click to drag *does* work, so I'm suspecting a Nautilus problem. NB double click with a proper mouse also doesn't work, so it's not a trackpad problem per se.
    2) Second problem is that my desktop icons (Home and a couple of folders) aren't showing up, despite using gnome-tweak-tool to set the desktop icons "On". And when I right-click on the gnome-wayland desktop the context menu only shows "Change Desktop Background" and "Settings...".
Both of these probems aren't present on Gnome under X.

I can confirm both of these on my own Gnome 3.16 desktop as well. The no desktop icons I believe is a known thing with Gnome on Wayland (it doesn't exist, just like restarting Gnome Shell with Alt+F2 and r does not exist under Wayland either). The first issue I have never seen anywhere, and it does not seem limited to touchpads (hook up a mouse and you will see the same thing). Anyone experienced the lack of double click for folders in Nautilus/Files under Wayland? Any solutions?

  • Gnome 3.4 Missing Desktop Icons

I've got the latest version of gnome 3.4 installed along with gnome-tweak-tool. In gnome-tweak-tool I've got Have the file manager handle the desktop set to on. However, when I log out and log back in again there are no icons until I fire up nautilus manually at which point it draws the desktop icons. How can I make it so that the icons are there when I log into gnome without having to fire up nautilus manually first please? Many thanks in advance.

I'm not really at home in Gnome 3, but here's my two cents:
Open dconf-editor (Alt+F2 and enter 'dconf-editor') and be sure 'org > gnome > desktop > background > show-desktop-icons' is checked...
If not, do so and restart the shell...
If it is already checked, I'm kinda out of inspiration...

  • "Show Desktop" icon in Gnome Disappears

    Hello All,
I have GNOME (installed from the repos).  Once every few logins (it seems pretty random) the "show desktop" icon (usually in the lefthand corner) is missing.
If I try and add it again, the new icon actually appears directly to the right of the original. If I logout or reboot, the original icon re-appears.
I have found nothing online relating to this problem, nothing in the forums (one post mentioned it, so I commented, but never got a reply).
I've actually had this issue in another distro since before I started using arch --- Fedora to be precise.  However, I've yet to see it in ubuntu, debian or slackware (and I use ubuntu at work every day, on multiple machines).
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I have the same "show desktop icon"  problem --- I had this issue in fedora as well, was hoping it'd disappear in arch. did you ever fix it?

  • Help! Desktop icons gone, no right click ... and Nautilus crashes!

It doesn't seem to be an options or configuration thing, maybe more like some sort of corruption? The Panels are fine. I have checked desktop and Nautilus options using Gconf and tried recreating ~/.gconf etc. The only suspicious occurrence was when, in the middle of a pacman -Syu, I was thrown back to the GDM login prompt. I just logged in again and did another pacman -Syu and everything seemed okay.
By the way, running Nautilus as root does show root's desktop okay, but Nautilus still crashes.
Any help would be most welcome for a very frustrating problem!
PS: Forgot to say that I'd tried reinstalling quite a few Gnome things and Nautilus, with no effect.
Also, the problem persists after restarting X, logon, reboot, power-off ...

Uh-oh, seems like this problem could go wider than I thought. There's a fairly lengthy thread on the Ubuntu forums which smells the same, for example:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … stcount=42 =>
    Re: Desktop icons disappear
Got it! I can get a crash with this:
    Code:
    mkdir ~/test
    cp /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop ~/test/
    nautilus ~/test
I'm going to leave a comment in the bug.
And in fact, I was mucking around with .desktop files when I think my icons went AWOL.
Anyone else brave enough to risk losing their desktop to try this out?!

  • Multiple Desktop Icons in Sidebar

    Here's the setup:
I have my user profile setup on a secondary (non-booting) HD named "Macintosh HD". I hooked up and booted off of an old laptop in FW Target mode, who's HD also was named "Macintosh HD." Well this caused all sorts of probs with my profile going missing upon disconnecting the laptop and rebooting. Opened up terminal and looked in /Volumes, there was listed "Macintosh HD" and "Macintosh HD1," the latter being the one that held my profile. So I created a temp user and logged in with that name, deleted the "Macintosh HD" volume, which was basically empty, renamed the "Macintosh HD1" to "Macintosh HD" and pointed my user to the profile. Logged out and back in as myself and all my preferences and what not were back in place.
Here's the only problem that I haven't been able to resolve. When saving/opening files from an application, in the sidebar, there are multiple desktops, 3 to be exact. One has a generic folder icon, the other two have the desktop icon and both actually point to the true desktop. If I open up a Finder window, there is only one desktop icon, it's just a problem in the Open/Save dialog box. How can I get it back to one desktop in the sidebar?

That works in a normal Finder window, but not in the Save/Open dialog within an application.
However, I deleted the sidebar.plist file within the Preferences folder, restarted and all is back to normal.

  • White thick frame around desktop icons (after latest updates)

    hi all,
i'm using xfce4 as DE, but, instead of xfdesktop as desktop icon manager, i keep using nautilus ('nautilus -n': run automatically at session login)  'cos i like some features xfdesktop doesn't have, such as: more flexible icons repositioning, icons resizing, etc..
my main problem is: after having installed last updates this morning (pacman -Syyu), and after re-executing nautilus, now all icons on desktop have a ugly and annoying thick (3-4 pxs) white frame around ...
googling about, i found out it could be a issue related to how nautilus manages thumbnails ....but unfortunately all threads are concerning gnome 2.x...NOT gnome 3.x
some of you encountered such a problem?
seems that nautilus treats and displays all desktop icons as images thumbnails
    thanks

    guys
    i've solved this way:
    from: http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/os/Linux/distr/ … g/os/i686/
    i downloaded: nautilus-3.6.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz
    so i downgraded nautilus (pacman -U nautilus-3.6.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz) from 3.6.3 prior to 3.6.1-1 (unfortunately i couldn't find 3.6.1-2 or 3.6.2 vers around)
restarted nautilus and everything is back to normal
ps: remember to add nautilus in IgnorePkg section (/etc/pacman.conf), otherwise it will be upgraded back again as soon as a pacman -Su is issued
i share with you this piece of information if it can be useful

  • Where are iPhoto library, iTunes, Safari bookmarks, desktop icons...?

When installing Leopard, my main internal "Macintosh HD" (where all my programs are loaded) didnt show as an option, so I installed on my secondary HD. Leopard runs OK from here, BUT, I cant find my iPhoto library, iTunes, Safari bookmarks, desktop icons, and the programs in the dock no longer show. Any advice?

Sadly, this is still an issue.
I guess plan A would be to find all the settings I am now missing and point the various programs to them. Though not sure how to do either of those things.
If this is difficult, then plan B is to "boot back into ...Tiger drive" and reload Leopard in drive bay 1 as originally intended. Again, not sure how to do that - and why it didnt work the first time.
Pls let me know if you think this is the right plan, and if so, what would the steps required look like.

  • Desktop icons rows screwed up help!

Hey on my powerbook g4 12 inch, the desktop icon rows seem to be off line. For example, i have Macintosh HD on my desktop in the top right corner and if i clean up the rows by going to view>clean up and the Macintosh HD icon goes halfway under the finder bar. I tried making a new user and that worked for a bit but then started again. How can this be fixed?
    Thanks

Its running 10.5.8 and another thing, when i press F7 the display goes to a blank background as if there was a secondary display. How can i remove this because i dont need it and its annoying when i hit the F7 key and it takes a sencond to go to my wallpaper. If i go to displays in settings and arrangement, there is one display slightly higher and to the left of another. (i will try to add a picture but i am new to this) it also happens in desktop and screensaver.
