Gnome 3 - "Activities" search is dreadfully slow

Is there any way to increase the speed of the search in the gnome 3 activities window? After typing in the name of a program or file there is quite a large delay.
Is there any way to possibly cache the computer upon startup to speed this up?

I've been testing here >> compaq 610 with a celeron and intel graphics. It's not too quick here either, but only with the first search! Takes 'bout 4-5 seconds to open the icon for the app selected. After that is goes much quicker > I can select any app then and it'll pop up in 2 seconds...opening progs themselves is no problem.
I guess it would depend on hardware. My hardware isn't the fastest. The intel graphics should be fine here...
I would advise you to read on the nvidia wiki and search for threads about nvidia/nouveau/gnome3..There are several.

Still my issue was not resolved, could you help me to find the exact error.I have enhanced the component, view and context node, still i couldn't able to add attributes to the context node BTQRACT.I tried to add several fields, but it is giving the same error 'METHOD CL_BT126S_A_APPTSR_CTXT' CREATE_BTQRACT DOES NOT EXIST'. I have checked the OSS messages and found 2 relavant to this component. I have implemented both the Sap Notes 1363752, 1226612. Still after implementing the OSS note, i am getting the same error. My guess is one of the method is missing. Please help me out?

  • OAM Identity Server user search is very slow after upgrading to 10.1.4.2

We recently upgraded Identity-Server from 7.0.4 to 10.1.4.2 + BP10. The new webpass (version 10.1.4.2) is on iPlanet webserver, which does not have any bundled patch available. After this upgrade, we found the user search is very slow. It is taking double the time compare to version 7.0.4. The search performance for NetPoint admin users is fine.
The new version is connecting to the same LDAP (Sun 5.2) as the old one. The 7.0.4 version was well tuned (like Ldap connections, caching, etc) for the performance. The migration suppose to carryover those performance configuration to the new version. Is there any new parameter (related to performance) I should look for in version 10 ? Anybody have faced these issues after migration and found a fix for it ?
    Thanks!

You shouldn't disable Spotlight completely; Apple's App Store relies on it to keep track of updates to software you've downloaded and permit you to update them when they're available. Instead, in Spotlight preferences, uncheck everything in "Search Results." Spotlight will still run for OS and App Store purposes but won't be useful for your search needs any longer. Instead, check out EasyFind in the App Store. It's fast, flexible, and will search external drives Spotlight hasn't indexed.

  • ITunes Dreadfully Slow  (w/PC Running Windows XP Pro)

Can anyone answer why iTunes is dreadfully slow on PC (Windows XP Pro), compared to OSX (SnowLeopard)?
Just even booting iTunes on PC w/Windows XP Pro, takes aprox 30-40 seconds. Where as compared to OSX SnowLeopard, it is instantaneous.

You can see several reports of it being done successfully with Tiger if you Google for it. But it is illegal as it's working on stolen and hacked copies of OS X.mrtotes

  • Full Text searching number is slow

     Hi
I configure the Full text search
some words like '  c\s full  , m\s xxxxx   like this because of  \  it is not searching... if i replace to '' it is not searching the word that i require.
if i search the words that have number 432323XXX these words search are very slow
    Please help
    Thanks & Regards Manoj

    Hi Manoj,
The performance of full-text queries could be influenced by various factors, such as memory, disk speed, fragmented catalog and so on. To improve the performance of full-text queries, please consider the following things.
    • Reduce the number of fragments, reorganize the full-text catalog by using the REORGANIZE option of the ALTER FULLTEXT CATALOG Transact-SQL statement.
    • Limit results and increase performance by using the top_n_by_rank parameter of the FREETEXTTABLE and CONTAINSTABLE functions.
    • Check the full-text query plan to make sure that the appropriate join plan is chosen.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.12 search results in Activities overview

When I'm searching for an application in the Activities overview I'm getting the icons on the top row of matching applications, and beneath that I have 4 empty rows of search results: 1 for Terminal, 1 for Files, 1 for Keys and 1 for Weather.
Those 4 categories are available in Gnome Control Center under the Search button and are activated. When I completely disable the Search option in the titlebar of Control Center and I restart Gnome-Shell with the 'r' command, I have normal behaviour again. When I enable the Search function and restart Gnome-Shell I get those ugly empty rows again which clutter my search results. Turning on or off 1 of those individual search categories doesn't make a difference, the rows are always empty.
I have a complete up to date stable Gnome 3.12 x64 desktop. I can't remember having this behaviour on 3.10 or having changed the search options lately.
Is there a way to populate the search categories or should I reset some settings / delete some cache? What's the search engine behind all this?

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Chazza!
I installed Tracker (because it wasn't installed yet), configured it, had it index my locations, turn on searching for Files and Weather and logged in again. After that it worked flawlessly.

  • Creating favourites in Gnome's Activities menu?

    Hello there,
I have some documents, pictures and files which I need quite frequently. In order to access them faster I am looking for a way to have them somehow pinned to the Activities overview in Gnome. This could be in some form of a menu or permanent visible icons.
Do you know of any way which would fulfil my need?
    Thanks!

Unia wrote:I don't know if this feature is still present in 3.8, but maybe you can have Nautilus take over the desktop and put those files (or a symlink to them) in the ~/Desktop folder so they appear on your desktop?
Thanks, I just tried that. Yet it does not work very reliable. Sometimes searching for the file name in the Activities overview finds the files, sometimes not.
Unia wrote:EDIT: As far as I know, you can not pin files to the Activities overview. Another (dirty/hackish) solution is to create .desktop files for each file you want to "favorite".
I will propose that as a feature request in the Gnome bugtracker.

  • Why is searching so much slower in both Lion and Mountain Lion than Snow Leopard?

Hi, I use Snow Leopard run on several Mac Pros to perform multidimensional time-lapse-imaging in our lab. Snow Leopard provides instantaneous (seconds) searching for folders containing the image sequences I require for analysis (distributed across 4 x 2TB hard drives- images are saved under the structure Time\Position, and for analysis I need to retrieve all folders with the same Position label). Lion and Mountain Lion either fail to search or are painfully slow. For analysis I use internal hard drives connected as external volumes via USB and I suspect this might be part of the problem, however the same setup works flawlessly with Snow Leopard.
This problem is becoming very frustrating as I can’t figure out what has changed, or whether I am overlooking something obvious. I installed Lion on my MacBook Pro over 6 months ago which is when I discovered this problem and had to reinstall Snow Leopard. At that time I had hoped that the next OS might provide a better search function for our use, but after some testing it seems the same. To search through folders manually takes over 10 x as long as using a simple search in Snow Leopard. Can anyone provide me any advice as to what might be causing this problem and whether there might be a solution? I’ve tried a few free searching tools from the app store, but these do not perform any better than searching in Finder. I would obviously prefer to be able to invest in new Macs in the future which run the most current OS without having to install Snow Leopard on them all (if this is even possible without future models without causing compatibility problems).
Many thanks for reading and for any advice you can give me.
    Oli

  • [GNOME 3.4] gnome-shell overview search + gnome-documents - CPU 100%

    Hello
When I type something in the gnome shell overview my CPU goes to 100% for a few seconds even after I left the overview.
The process which is taking my CPU is : gjs-console
With gnome 3.4 you can search for documents via the gnome shell overview, this search is based on gnome-documents. So I tried dis-installing gnome-documents and the problem was solved.
I don't know if it's a bug... but if the gjs-console really is the documents overview search process, it's strange that it doesn't stop when I leave this overview.
What do you think ? Should I report it as a bug ? Arch bug / upstream bug ?
PS : By the way, the gnome-shell extension "tracker-search" is faster and, I think, better for finding documents via the overview.

This behaviour is the same in my box but I don't think it's an arch bug but an upstream issue (its not a bug formally speaking)... maybe it should be reported to the gnome-documents team in order they do more polish to it.
    Best,

  • Putting Google Before Wikipedia in Gnome 3 integrated search.

This is just a little hack.  Hopefully others might find it useful.
When utilizing Gnome 3's integrated search feature the user also has the option to search for what they're looking for either from Wikipedia or Google.  Apparently Gnome 3 is reading these search providers in from the xml files in /usr/share/gnome-shell/search_providers and they appear in reverse alphabetical order.
It would be much more useful for me if Google was the default search instead of Wikipedia.  So I simply renamed the file google.xml to xoogle.xml so it would come after wikipedia in alphabetical order.
    Laters!

This was bugging me as well, thanks! I will try this

  • Save Search Running Very Slow

I have a custom page with a query Bean and have Simple, Advanced and View Panels enabled. My Search functionality works great, very fast. However, when I save a search... any search... no matter how small the resultset...When I go into the views panel... The views run VERY slow. The results do eventually come back, but it takes 3-5 minutes compared to 3-5 seconds when I run the same search from my search panels.
Does anybody know what OAF does in the background of the Views Panel? Does it alter the SQL differently then when I simply run a search?
    Any help is much appreciated.

I had the same problem when I setup a new computer this week. Here's what I had installed:
    Photoshop CS5
    Suitcase Fusion 3
The problem was that when I was in Photoshop and used the "Save for Web" export screen, the dropdown menu for the different export types (JPG, PNG, GIF, etc) would take an extremely long time to update the preview of the graphic.
After a few days of research , I found that Suitcase was conflicting with Photoshop. Here's how you fix the problem (or at least here's what I did with my situation):
    Open Suitcase
Go to "Tools", click "Manage Plugins"
    Deactivate the Photoshop plugin
This fixed the problem immediately and now my Photoshop" Save For Web" feature is working really fast. Hope this helps anyone else in the same boat.

  • Dreadfully slow when trying to mousedrag an image

    Hi.
I just switched to Keynote '09 and am trying to edit a very simple, one slide diagram that I created in Keynote '08. Whereas moving a single image around in '08 is seamless, moving the same image in the '09 version of the files is PAINFULLY slow, to the point where the program is utterly unusable.
I have tested and '08 version and an '09 version one after the other and the problem consistently exists for 09 but never for 08.
Is anyone else having similar issues? Is there a fix? I have a brand mnew MBP with 4Gb of RAM and the top of the line video card.

Hi, your hint does improve the speed for me only about 20 %: still my iMac is practically dead, when:
    - touching a slide with a diagram
    - saving any keynote file which has a diagram
    - moving around in the slides, if only one slide has a diagram
    The problem is either:
    - the processor load is 2 times 100 % for a couple of minutes
    - the input and output of the harddrive is maximum both at the same time
    - processor load is near to zero, harddrive activity is zero, but the iMac still is temporarily frozen (even the clock stops) for 1 minute or 2.
Recreating the diagrams does not help. The tendency of this behaviour was also there with the last updates of keynote 08. The workaround was, to just reduce the size of the diagram to fit right in the middle of the slide.
This phänomenon is a real problem for my work, I have spent lot of time to find a workaround.

  • Searching UI Interface - Slow / Out of Memory Error

    Hello,
From some days to now, I've seen that in NWDS when you search to a UI interface to assign it to a task, it takes a lot of time, and now it's showing me the following error,
An out of memory has occurred. Consult the "Running Eclipse" section of the readme file for information on preventing this kind of error in the future.
I see this in the file,
    eclipse -vmargs -Xmx<memory size>
where I should put this command?
How can I solve this? Anyone knows this error? Why this is happening?
    Kind Regards
