[Gnome 3] Annoying system sounds

Hi everybody,
Gnome 3 has been emiting some annoying system sounds since this afternoon update.
I tried to shut them off in the user menu but it didn't work.
Any idea ?
Thanks for your attention.

I've started getting annoying pops when changing the volume, both with the keyboard and using the volume icon. Muting system sounds doesn't help.

  • System sounds cause gnome to freeze on startup

So far I've found six threads describing this problem, but all remain unresolved. So please excuse my starting yet another thread but I thought it would be the best way to bump them all.
Situation - new to Archlinux but not to Linux. I managed a network install of the base system and then added xorg, gnome and a few bits and pieces and got it all going, more or less. The problem is that sometimes when gnome starts up after the login screen, it freezes after loading the top and bottom panels. Usually the Applications/Places/System menus are visible, and sometimes the workspace switcher on the bottom panel, but no other panel app icons, nor desktop icons. There is a mouse pointer visible which I can move around but left and right clicking do nothing. Usually I can get into a virtual terminal with ctrl-alt-F1, but sometimes I get no response from the keyboard at all and I have to push the computer reset button to reboot. The following threads seem to describe the same problem:
This one. The OP suggests deleting ~/.gnome2/session but there ain't no such file/directory on my system.
    That one.
    Yonder one.
    Another one!
    Oh no! Yet another one.
    The plot thickens. A clue.
I can confirm the OP's finding in the last thread. Enabling system sounds causes the problem. Deleting the ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/sound directory (not, ~/.gconf/gnome/sound) means that gnome starts up OK, but disconcertingly quietly.
So - any solutions? Any way to get gnome and all the bells, whistles, cheeps and chirrups?
Oh - and I'm enjoying Arch. I'm posting from a (silent) Arch desktop now. I needed a challenge after Gentoo.

    Thanks for your comments.
I updated today which included esd-0.2.38-1, the new kernel, and other bits, but I still get a lockup if I disable system sounds. But one useful thing (for me). I installed KDE over the weekend - and it plays its sounds OK. Before that if I had a gnome freeze I had to go into a virtual terminal, take out the ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/sound directory and reboot. But now, when gnome froze, I ctl-alt-backspace'd, and then logged into KDE which played me a merry tune just to keep my spirits up. I was then able to delete the sound directory, log out and then log back into a now thawed out, albeit silent, gnome.
Avoids a reboot - which is good.
By the way. Now I've got two wastebin icons (one labelled Trash, the other Wastebin) on my gnome desktop courtesy of KDE. I know why, and I've come across this irritation before, but is there any way of getting rid of the extra desktop icon in gnome without losing the KDE one? I've never figured this one out.

  • System sound output switchery

    Hi everybody,
I'm having a very strange problem that I haven't figured out how to reproduce just yet but thought I'd give it a try on the forums anyway...
The problem is that the system sound output in the audio prefernce pane seems to be randomly* switching from "Digital Out" to the next one in line, my bluetooth headset. So, if my headset is turned off I get all kinds of "error connecting to bluetooth device" messages and if it's on, the battery drains quickly from connecting and disconnecting all the time. I should mention that Digital out is working beautifully; it's just that I'm getting these bluetooth errors all the time as something is switching the audio out from "Digital Out" to my headset.
*I'm sure there's a cause, but I haven't been able to put my finger on it just yet.
Sorry I can't be more specific at this time...
    Cheers,
    Ryan

OK, I've found that the problem only occurs when watching a movie in dolby digital (VLC or DVD Player) and a sound is played in iTunes or an event happens such as receiving an IM. This is beginning to make sense to me as the receiver after all is receiving a dolby digital signal, and wouldn't be able to play a stereo stream while it has its hands full with the dolby digital. (I guess? Correct me if I'm wrong... anyway the receiver LED can only display stereo or digital, not both at once!)
So my question becomes, how to stop OS X from directing these sounds to my bluetooth headset. There must be a way just to turn off all other sounds while I'm watching a movie in 5.1 or send them to /dev/null or something, anything other than repeatedly connecting/disconnecting with my headset or displaying annoying warning messages.

  • System sound (like when empty trash) miserably stop working in Lion 10.7.2

I have upgraded to Lion10.7.2 on my Macbook Pro early 2008 Intel 15 inches, and the update went fine except one annoying problem I found so far.
This problem also occurred in 10.7.0 and 10.7.1 and it seems that no fix has been made in 10.7.2
The problem is when I drag file to Trash and empty it, there should be trash empty sound effect, and this has been with us since Tiger.
In 10.7.2 it work as expected, but when I close the lid to get it to sleep, once I open the lid, the system sound is gone without no reason.
When I play music from iTunes, or when I change volume level, the sound effects work as usual, but empty trash sound stop working miserable.
I have to shut down, press Option-Command-P-R and power on to reset PRAM then system sound like empty trash come back. Again, afpr may be half a day, it's gone again
Any friend here has solution for this? The com.apple.soundprefs.plist file, if you delete it, in Lion, it is not recreated again, and it's gone forever. SO delete plist file is not a solution.
    Help please

I found a workaround to my problem accidentally.
As the system sound like empty trash or file drag sound stop working miserably, after close the MBP lid to sleep, after it awake, system sound just stop working.
Before this, I have to shut down my MBP, reset PRAM by press Option-Control-P-R and power on, to get the system sound back
But I found that the workaround whenever the system sound stop working thad do not require reboot is:
    1. Go to System Preference-Sound
    2. Change Play sound effects through: Internal Speakers to Soundflower 2ch) in the drop down list.
(Soundflower has been installed by a software called iShowU HD (screen capturing software))
    3. Slide to change Alert Volume from the original position
    4. Switch back to Internal Speakers from Soundflower 92ch) in the drop down list
    5. Change Alert Volume by moving slide bar back to the desirable position
Immediately, the sound effects that stop working will start working again.
This just work for my case. I don't know it will work for ther people that have the same problem as me or not.
And if possible, can some expert here give me explanation why doing the above make system sound effect to work again? mI want to know the cause, and definite solution to the problem
Advise and suggestion please. Thank in advance

  • Disable System Sounds [3000 N500]

I hope this is not a double post
Please advise on how to disable the system sounds on a Lenovo 3000 N500. I'm reffering to the very annoying "beep" at critical battery power, or plug/unplug of the AC Adapter.
I have disabled all the sounds in Vista CP, but that didn't solve the problem.
    thanks in advance
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This worked on my Lenovo 3000 N500:
In "Control Panel" open "sound",Then in sound, in the "Playback" tab, double click on the "speakers" icon. This will open up a "speaker properties window. Click on the "Levels" tab and this will show two areas, speakers and PC speaker, click on the little speaker icon for the pc speaker and it should show a circle with a slash through it showing that the pc speaker is disabled. Click OK or apply whichever is highlighted.

  • Quiet system sounds in Vi

(second stab at this seeing the forum lost my original post!)?I am running Vista Ultimate with the latest X-Fi drivers available on the site.
The sounds that come out of applications like Media Centre, Media Player, DVD, etc etc are fine but the system sounds are quiet. I know the system sounds can be louder as I was using a Dell Laptop with Vista and the sounds needed to be turnned down. I have set all sliders up to full wherever I can find them but still, the system sounds are not as loud as I would like, any advice?

    Don't think so.
Mind you, I have noticed system sounds turning up in xfce-look.org lately, so maybe it's in development. Or it's just accidental cross-posting from gnome-look.org; that happens a lot with wallpapers and stuff.
    Edit:
Just had a brainwave. You could get a login sound by addding something like the play command from SoX to "Autostarted Applications" with an appropriate soundfile. Otherwise, Xfce is silent, I'm afraid.

  • (SOLVED) No system sounds, and no sound for some applications

For some reason, system sounds stopped working (like when one takes a screenshot). aplay plays sounds (I mean, no errors whatsoever), but I can hear nothing. Listening from mplayer or vlc still works as normal.
When I 'aplay sound.wav', I see the leds going up and down on pavucontrol, but I hear nothing.
I run openbox and I don't start gnome-settings-daemon with it. It is "pure" openbox.
I checked pavucontrol settings, and also alsamixer but couldn't find anything that could solve the problem. I use pulse-audio, and have pulseaudio-alsa and alsa-utils installed.

Yeah, I can guarantee that I didn't touch alsamixer myself. I didn't even know the F6 option (although, today I realized it is there very well visible). Anyway, I guess an update might have changed something... I saw other people with similar problems in #archlinux this morning.

  • Download different preset system sound profiles?

I just purchased my new laptop 2 days ago which came with the new Windows 8.1. I have spent several hours scouring the internet for sites that have sound profiles that have already been set to each event, so I don't have to spend the next 11 million years
    setting each one manually.
I am quite displeased with the lack of personalization features especially after how much I paid, which a lot of the cost was for this new-fangled OS. There is only one set of system sounds, and it is extremely quiet compared to the rest of the sounds such
as any playing music, Skype message/call alerts, etc. Even at full volume, I cannot hear the system sounds and that is annoying to me.  I want to hear when I click on anything or open a link, the familiar crisp and loud "tick" sound from Windows
    7, but it is missing.
I only want the sound profiles, I don't need a bunch of picture sets or other graphically related things, just the preset sound files that are ready to go as soon as you download them.  This shouldn't have been an issue with new aged technology like
this.  I personally think the interface customization options should be much greater, but there is only 12 or 14 factory wallpapers installed, and there is no diversity in the selections. I know its no big deal to download a high resolution wallpaper
from anywhere online, but after paying several hundred dollars for Windows 7 with a new skin on it, one would expect to at least be able to find one or two customization settings that suits their desires, but due to lack of any choices, I have not been able
to become comfortable with my new system.
If anybody has any information on where I might be able to find some sounds, that would be great.  Look forward to getting this figured out.
    Thanks,
    Steele

Did you download these songs from ITMS? or some other source?
Check the bit rate on the songs via itunes and see what it says. It will give you some information as to why the songs sound the way they do.

  • [SOLVED]XMMS stops playing when KDE plays a system sound!

Well the subject says it all... if KDE reports an error or something... and plays a sound... XMMS stops playing... it's really annoying...
I use ALSA for the sound server and for XMMS output... never had these problems on other distros...

I assume you are using ARTS for kde sounds ?
Try setting the auto-suspend delay to 0 , Control center > sound and multimedia > sound system , general tab
If that doesn't help, disable the sound system.
In order to get kde to play system sounds without ARTS :
Control center > sound and multimedia > system notifications > player settings > use an external player
the play command from the sox package works very well.

  • Stopping audio from sleeping as I'm missing system sounds?

I tried posting this before but got no responses, so I'm trying again as this is VERY annoying.
I'm using the optical sound output from my iMac 2011 into a receiver, and am having problems with audio sleeping.
What is clearly happening is that the audio is going to sleep after 30 seconds if no sounds are played. (I can hear a pop from the speakers when the sleep occurs.)
When audio is awoken, the first second or so of the sound gets missed.  Now, when that is a system sound, e.g. mail send or arrival, they get missed completely!
I have tried Antipop which sort of works but there must be a better solution to this problem.

Some fonts are located in the folder /System/Library/Fonts/ on the Tiger installation DVD or CDs; to get at the other fonts, use Pacifist to extract them from the Tiger installation DVD or CDs.

  • Airplay system sounds bug

I have ipad1 and airplay express. When i playback music on airplay there are no system sounds from ipad, even when the music is stoped. I have to manualy swich from airplay to ipad.

  • After playing System Sound, no other sounds anymore.

    Hi,
I'm using KDE4 and this is my problem:
Whenever i use an application with sound (chromium. smplayer, ...) and there's a system sound, the sound of the application disappears and i have to restart the application to get the sound back on. Can somebody help me? I followed all archlinux wiki's but no success. At the moment, i have installed alsa-utils, alsa-oss, and i use xine as a backend.
I don't know what informations are useful so please ask, if you need any.
    Greetings

Thanks for your reply. I tried both. No success. When i followed the pulse-wiki i even got an error during boot.
The whole thing is really annoying because i followed the install wiki and did nothing wrong. But it doesn't wanna work.
I think the problem is with phonon. Any ideas?
