[Gnome 3] Default application for Calendar

Hi,
I have done a fresh install of Arch Linux with Gnome 3 yesterday. I haven't installed evolution, I have installed thunderbird with lighting. But in default applications, Gnome 3 show only gedit like calendar app:
Is this an Arch bug or Gnome bug?

thunderbird is not a calendar application unless you tune it up with an extension. therefore it shouldn't be in there
but if you really want it there, you need to append to /usr/share/applications/thunderbird.desktop, to MimeType, text/calendar;text/x-vcard, then run as root update-desktop-database -q

  • Xdg (or Gnome 3) default applications

I want to change the default applications for certain files as determined by xdg, in this case under cinnamon/gnome 3 but I want it to apply across all DEs implementing freedesktop.org standards.
I have emacs and gvim installed. They both have .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/ which specify their mimetype associations. I happen to have installed emacs after vim, and now I have /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache which seems to be generated from the other files, with lines like, for example:
    text/plain=emacs.desktop;gvim.desktop;
Which I assume causes emacs to be selected as the default plain text editor (as indeed it is by xdg-mime query default text/plain shows).
    I have three questions:
    1. How can I change the default text editor without editing mimeinfo.cache (I assume it is auto-(re)generated) and without removing emacs' mime types (which are correct and should stay)?
    2. How do I regenerate mimeinfo.cache?
    3. Is there a GUI that allows me to do this stuff (ideally without having to find a file of a particular type to open first - I have tried in Gnome 3: 'System Settings > Details > Default Applications' and there are only a few default 'application types' there, not mime types, and none of them is text editor)?

    With reference to: http://standards.freedesktop.org/deskto … 01s07.html
    In answer to 1:
It seems the preferences are handled 'externally', and although it doesn't make it clear where it seems to be in /usr/share/applications/defaults.list, I edited min
    [Default Applications]
    x-scheme-handler/spotify=spotify.desktop
    text/plain=gvim.desktop
    (in answer to 2:)
    I then ran 'sudo update-desktop-database'
    And now:
    $ xdg-mime query default text/plain
    gvim.desktop emacs.desktop
But I'm still interested in the answer to 3, in particular a tool that would change groups of supported mime types and allow you to pick and choose from the lists defined per applications would be useful...

  • Set default application for *all* users

Hello people, my 1st post here, so forgive me for possible imprecisions, ambiguity, inappropriateness....
When I search how to set/change the default app for opening some type of file I always find the answer "through the getinfo". But doing that, I only change the default application for the current user.
I want to do that for all users of my mac, without repeating the getinfo process for each of them.
Is there any adminstrative tools for doing that?
    Thank you.

You could download and install RCDefaultApp 2.1 for all users: check the Read Me and then test it on something to see if it accomplishes what you want.

  • .  It's not clear to me if the default sync for calendar is the iphone or my mac (shows 82 modifications).  I want it to default to the mac but the wording suggests the iphone.  Also, I don't see any way to do the syncy

I'm having trouble with a sync alert.  It's not clear to me if the default sync for calendar is my iphone (3G) or my mac (shows 82 modifications).  I want it to default to the mac but the wording suggests the iphone.  Anybody know the default device and if it can be and if the other can be selected if desired
Also, I don't see any way to do the sync on an individual entry basis for calendar.  Looks like it will only do all of them at once.  I'd like to go through them one by one to confirm which entry is correct.
    Thanks

Maybe you should get new friends.
I'm not sure that recovery mode works when you have to trust the computer, but did you try it?
If you can't update or restore your iOS device - Apple Support
If that won't work, perhaps you can use Find my iPhone from a computer in your iCloud.com account to erase the device.
iCloud: Erase your device - Apple Support
This has nothing to do with the Find my iPhone app being installed on the phone, but you do have to have Find my iPhone activated in the iCloud settings on the phone.

  • How do you make console apps the default application for a file type?

I have a console movie player, mplayer, that I like a lot. I've compiled it from source on my intel core2 macbook pro and it works fine. There is no gui, but to play movie files you open up a terminal and type the command mplayer /path/to/file. I would like mplayer to play a movie file automatically when I double click on the file, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it. I tried setting it in the file info dialogue, but when I go to the path of the binary I want, it is not selected. How can I set a console app as my default application for my file type?

there is a GUI mplayer for OS X. why don't you use it instead of the command line one?
if you insist on using the command line mplayer then the only way to do this is to put a GUI wrapper on it. this can be done with automator or apple script for example. but really, why don't you just use the GUI mplayer?

  • How can I change the default application for a content type?

Running a version of Linux, the default application for PDF files is "Use Document Viewer (default)", which appears to be /usr/bin/evince. I'd much prefer to use /usr/bin/okular; how can I change the default. This question is NOT about how to change the function that is automatically applied when I access a link, in this case "Preview in Firefox", but rather to the default application that I can select when I download a file being viewed in Firefox's previewer.

This is real progress, a solution to the problem as posted. The command:
    xdg-mime default okularApplication_pdf.desktop application/pdf
    makes okular the default.
However when I added okular to the choices for applications in:
    * Edit>Preferences>Applications>PDF
the popup box that appears when I click Download on the preview page changed. The pulldown menu that appears next to "Open with" used to have 3 entries:
    # Document Viewer (default)
    # Acroread
    # Other
    Now it has only 2:
    # Okular (Default)
    # Other
    I'd like it to read
    # Okular (Default)
    # Acroread
    # Other
How can I control the entries in this pulldown list?
Also, how can I make the default choice in the popup box be
    * Open With <whatever> , rather than
    * Save File ?

  • TextEdit is the default application for my Numbers documents

Although I did not set it to be, TextEdit is the default application for my Numbers documents. It was not always this way, but it is now, and I can't seem to change the default application back to Numbers ('09). For example, when I double-click any .numbers document, I always get the following error message:
The document “xxxxx.numbers” could not be opened. The file isn’t in the correct format. The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format.
    See: http://screencast.com/t/P5OSAJAq
Therefore, whenever I want to open a.numbers document, I must drag it to the Numbers application icon or right-click and select “open with” and select Numbers from the list of applications. Although this works fine, it creates a couple of extra steps that I would prefer not to do
My first inclination was to “Get info” and change the “open with”  back to Numbers for all .numbers documents.
    http://screencast.com/t/TMJwBmTOkHN
    http://screencast.com/t/LAnPsbeGdB
However, selecting Numbers as the default application will not persist after clicking  “change all.” Rather, it reverts back to TextEdit. Tony, this is the only way I know how to select the default application for a document type.
Is there another location where I can set/reset the default application?
    Thanks!

I guess that there is at least one database used by the Operating System which is corrupted.
Run a maintenance application : MAINTENANCE is a free very good one available thru :
    www.titanium.free.fr/
and ask it to repair permissions,
    delete caches
    repair database Launch Services.

  • Mail default applications for opening attachments

I recently had to install Open Office in order to be able to open those kinds of documents produced by my colleagues. The only problem is that it now becomes the default application for opening .doc, .xls and .pps documents. I have changed this using command+i on each type and making sure I selected the "change all" so that each app opens under it's appropriate iWork program, but I still have a problem with Mail.
In Mail, if I get a .doc attachment, clicking on it automatically launches Open Office. Worse, when I right-click and choose "open with", Open Office is listed twice at the top of the list!
I loathe Open Office with a passion, not least because of this situation, but also because it frequently crashes and is still bound to using xterm. Nevertheless, I have to keep it as my colleagues are all on Ubuntu Linux and insist on using it for spreadsheets (to be honest, Open Office is okay on Linux).
If only iWork apps could open OpenOffice documents... ah well.
Any solutions would be most welcome!

Here's how you can set your preference for which application to use on a given file type:
    1. select a file of that type
    2. press CMD-I to bring up the file information
    3. Click on the little triangle to expand the "Open With" section
    4. Select the application you want to use for that type of file
    5. Click on the "Change All" button
This has worked for me in the case where I have Parallels Desktop installed and it wants to use my Office 2000 installation under Parallels to open MS Word & Excel attachments. I changed these to be opened by NeoOffice, and it works both from the finder and when opening attachments in Mail.
    I hope this helps...

  • Default application for opening a docx attachment

Help! I'm unable to open a received attachment. it is a docx file. My computer tells me that there isn't a default application to open this file. Can anyone give me a step by step to set up a default???

    Welcome to the forums!
The default application for that file is Microsoft Word 2008.
Mac users using Word 2004 who receive a Word 2008 for Mac, (or Word 2007 for Windows) document, will not be albe to read this without having the Open XML Converter installed, which can be downloaded from Microsoft.
    Go to this page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
and click on the right under Most Popular, 'Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.0'
This opens a window at the bottom of the page. Scroll that to the bottom and click on English.dmg, and it will download for you as a disk image, which can be installed in the usual way.
After installation you can open and read .xml formatted Word 2008 documents in Word 2004.

  • How do I set the default time for calendar alerts?

How do I set the default time for calendar alerts? I always want to have an alert 15 minutes before my appointments. I don't want to have to manually set it each time I make an appointment (I just moved to iphone from a windows mobile where this was basic stuff so I apologise if this is a noob question).

I have the same issue. I've searched these forums and found lots of people who have asked this same question, but nobody who has received an answer.
About a year ago, I migrated from a Windows PC and a Blackberry (both of which had very simple default alert options) to a MacBook Pro and an iPhone and have yet to find a solution on this forum or from any of my Apple-savvy friends. Very discouraging.

  • Transferring from Yahoo mail to Gmail default service for calendar

    Good day,
I am given up on using Yahoo Mail after 13 years.  I get timed out and have problems login in and some of my messages don't get forwarded to my BlackBerry.  So I switched over to using Gmail as my main e-mail provider and it's been working well so far.
I use Outlook calendar on my laptop and sync it with my Torch 9800 using USB connection.  If I remove my Yahoo Mail as a default sevice for Calendar, Contact List and Messaing, and select Gmail as my default service how do I convert all my calendar and contact list to the Gmail profile.  Actually, not sure if my contact list would be affected since I don't see the association of the contact list to my Yahoo Mail currently.   If I delete my Yahoo profile would my events get deleted or would they get transferred to the default calendar profile?  Or do I just sync it again with my Outlook and my events will be transferred to the Gmail profile after selecting Gmail as my default service for Calendar and Contact List.  I hope I am explaining this correctly.  I also have a Facebook calendar profile showing birthday reminders, which I'm trying to remove but that's another problem.
I want to do it right the first time and don't want to accidentally delete my events and contact list.
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Before doing anything make a full backup of the device.
I think you can solve this by making the Gmail the default service. Then in the calendar app go to Options. On the screen type the letters M O V E. That should move all events to the default calendar. It's been a while since I've done this, though.

    2. If your issue has been solved, please resolve it by marking the post "Solution?" which solved it for you!

  • Gnome Default Application for Blank DVD [SOLVED]

Hello - I'm using Gnome 3.14. When I insert a blank DVD in my DVD drive it asks me whether I want to open it with Anjuta or eject it. Anjuta is a C++ development package so that's no good. How do I change the default application to something like Brasero when I insert a blank DVD? Many thanks in advance.

  • How to set my default application for illustrator files (windows)

I have both illustrator CS3 and CS5 on my windows 7 machine. I want to keep both versions as CS3 is better for converting SVG files.
Windows has CS3 as the default application when opeing .svg files. but I want to change this to CS5. I have tried changing the default program in the normal way,
right click - open with  - choose default program...
only CS3 is listed in the programs, so I navigate to CS5
         C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5.1\Support Files\Contents\Windows\illustrator.exe
but when I click ok, CS5 isn't added to the program list.
I have managed to change the default program for .ai and .eps files in this way and its workeds, but not with.svg files.
    Any ideas?

This method still doen't work, it has the same problem as my original post.Bbut I did find a utiliy that works, here is the link in case anyone has the same problem.

  • Default application for maps...

Is there a way to switch the default map application from "Maps" to the TomTom Navigation?
For example, if I use either Urbanspoon to find a restaurant, or the Starbucks application to find a nearby location, when getting directions, the iPhone uses the Maps application. It would be nice to have a setting that would allow me to use the TomTom application for all maps and directions.

FYI, TomTom version 1.3 is on the way which includes Google local search.

  • Default Application for .cbr and .rar Files

Okay, I know to change the default application used for opening a file you click on "Get Info", and then "Change All". A couple of weeks ago, the default for .rar files was UnRarX, and the default for .cbr was Jomic. I used Onyx to do some clean-up (repair permissions, etc), and the default program changed. Now whenever I change the default program for either .rar or .cbr, the other changes as well. I know that a cbr is technically a rar file, just for comic books, which is why I need it to open in a different program, I can't figure out how I got it to work before, can anyone help?
