Gnome 3 - disable GDM restarting when rebooting

When I reboot from Gnome 3 (fallback mode), GDM restarts in the process of shutting down. To explain it more clearly, this is what happens:
1.) I go to "User menu", then press "Shut Down...". A windows appears with various choices. I select "Restart".
2.) Gnome 3 closes down
3.) For a brief moment I see tty1
4.) GDM starts, user login window appears
5.) GDM closes down
6.) I see tty1 again. At this point sometimes steps 4 and 5 repeat again.
7.) System shuts down
I have gdm in daemons list (rc.conf) and my .xinitrc has nothing about gdm in it. I noticed something similar when using SLiM; when I had it in my daemons list (not the same system) and killed it later from tty2, it would automatically restart itself.
Any ideas?

Have you tried to remove it from the daemons list in rc.conf and start it from /etc/inittab?

  • FMS not restarting when rebooting

    Hi Everyone
I have a problem when rebooting the computer: Flash Media Server will not restart automatically after rebooting.
During installation I've set the server to run as a daemon, yet it doesnt seem to start up automatically.
It's a bit strange because I can actually connect to the admin console, and even 'restart' the server from there, yet when I try to stream content it will not connect. The only way I can start the server is through the command line.
    This is what I'm running:
    - Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 8)
    - Linux 2.6.9-89.0.3.ELsmp #1 SMP Sat Jun 13 07:05:54 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
    - Flash Media Streaming Server 3.0.1 r123
After rebooting, these are  the processes that are running:
    root      5425     1  0 13:49 ?        00:00:00 ./fmsmaster -silent
    root      5445  5425  0 13:49 ?        00:00:00 /opt/adobe/fms/fmsedge -edgeports :1935,443,80 -coreports localhost:19350 -conf /opt/adobe/fms/conf/Server.xml -adaptor _defaultRoot_ -name _defaultRoot__edge1
    root      5555     1  0 13:49 ?        00:00:00 ./fmsadmin -console -conf ./conf/Server.xml
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is this a known problem with FMSS 3.0.1?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Ryan

That's strange, especially since the right processes are running.  Perhaps there's something in the logs about what happens, have you take a look through /var/log/messages and the FMS logs?  Particularly look for the master log mentioning that it's trying to start a core - that should be the sign of the connection, and you can check the access log too to see if the connection is even getting in.

  • How to disable autostart (application) when managed server restart ?

    Hi Ppl,
How to disable autostart (application) when managed server restart ?
I want some of the applications to remain not started. In WebSPhere, we have an option disable auto start for applications.
    I don't find in weblogic.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I agree with Faisal. When you shutdown your WL server while the application is running, the thing is when you start your server again, it would automatically start the application with it. Now if the application was down when you shutdown the server, it _the application_ won't start with the server.
So it depends on the application last state, when you start your server.
    Regards,
    Mohab

Please try this: Copy the files formhistory.sqlite (or formhistory) and places.sqlite (or places) if they exist and delete the entire Mozilla folder in %APPDATA% and also the Firefox folder in Program Files. • 10.8.1 disables monitors when rebooting in 10.6.8

I just updated Mountain Lion to 10.8.1, When I reboot in my preferred OS (still 10.6.8), I lose the Apple Cinema Display driver and another driver for a cheaper Hanns-G monitor. Before updating to 10.8.1, while in 10.6.8 both monitors worked fine (for years). Each OS is installed on different volumes.
Today that changed. Before I rebooted into 10.8 I had two working monitors when booted in 10.6.8. After updating 10.8 to 10.8.1 I had 2 working monitors in 10.8.1. When I set my startup disk to be 10.6.8 the drivers appear lost (the Apple display works, but with a different looking driver) and the Hanns-G monirot is on, but black!
To test if the monitor was actually working I rebooted into 10.8.1 and both monitors were fine. When rebooted to 10.6.8, the Hanns-G was on, but black.
Does anyone have any idea what's happened? I don't understand how one OS can somehow affect another, even though they both reside on different volumes on different hard drives.
    Thanks,
    MartyP

Turns out I had to delete from both the Applications folder and an external drive that had a copy of the installer on it.  Update notification didn't disappear until I deleted both, emptied trash, and ejected the external drive.

  • Sometimes Gnome just logs out, instead of rebooting/shutting down

I'm running Gnome with GDM. I randomly have the experience that every once in a while when I select "restart" or "shutdown" from the Gnome shutdown dialogue, it just logs out intsead and returns me to the GDM login screen. I can then shutdown or reboot successfully from the login screen. It's not really a big deal. It happens a couple times a week. I'm just curious if anyone else is experiencing this and/or can shed any light on it.

I'm having the same issue and still looking for a solution as it's a bit annoying for me. I've found a couple of threads about similiar problems on this forum (as well as on forums for other distros), but couldn't find a workaround. I've changed PolicyKit settings to allow anyone or just specific user to shutdown the system, but it didn't help. I've also tried to strace gnome-session and gdm, but couldn't find any clues.
Has anyone of you managed to find a workaround for this problem?

  • [SOLVED] gdm freezes when started as service (systemd)

    Hey,
I've run into a weird issue here: when I reboot my laptop, it gets stuck after the "file system clean" messages and GDM won't come up.
After some time, it shows a "oops, something has gone wrong"-message and I can log in, but my settings are gone (mouse moves slowly, battery applet shows no battery, etc.).
After a few minutes, gnome-shell will crash.

However (!) when I disable gdm.service and put "exec gnome-session" into my xinitrc and call "startx" it works just fine.
    Any ideas?

I just tried "systemctl start gdm.service" from tty twice. First time was good, the second time I had the same old error again.
I also tried running gdm as root with the same result.
Running gnome-session works fine, so it's either a gdm or systemd thing...

    Solved.
    I had to enable KMS
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/In … Setting.29
    and remove my xorg.conf file.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME3: gnome-session and GDM won't start

    Whoops, had to -Syu.
I'm trying to start GNOME3 in two ways,
    1) exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session in .xinitrc
    2) Through GDM (/etc/rc.d/gdm start)
When I try to startx I get this error
gnome-session: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/gio/modules/libdconfsettings.so: undefined symbol: g_main_context_invoke
When I try to use GDM I get a number of these lines
gdm-binary[5891]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 1.784000 seconds
    and
gdm-binary[5891]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors

  • Gnome 3.2 GDM problem

I just upgraded to Gnome 3.2, but this must have broken something related to GDM. When I should be seeing the login box I just get a dialogue box saying: Failed to load session "gdm-shell". Unusually, nothing turned up on google/the forums about this message. Ideas?
    EDIT: Typo.

I am not able to use gdm after upgrading to gdm 3.2 . Gdm logs in as user 'gdm' everytime , I am not able to log out of user 'gdm' or swtich user. its really annoying, I tried installing xdm , its working correctly. I tried using the rc.conf daemon to run gdm but it gives the same result. I am using inittab to run gdm.  Right now I am using autologin to login to my user account. Can any one tell me what the problem is ?

  • I'm suddenly getting the kernel panic message and constant restarts when connected to the time machine wireless network. if is switch to the BT network, all fine. no help found so far as to what's wrong or how to correct, anyone have any thoughts...

Recently upgraded to mountain lion in order to buy the new tall tower for time machine backups. had to get technical support to help with set up as it wouldn't play ball with two computers. all working fine up until last week when the iMac started getting backup error messages. then system restarts independently when using time machine on the time machine wireless network. only stops restarting when I switch the wireless network back to he bt one, which is a pain obviously as can't back up to time machine then.  it has to be a problem with airport utility or something wireless but all says all up to date with software etc. all still works fine backing up from laptop on the wireless network, just the iMac is not happy. any help or thoughts very much appreciated.

Hi, many thanks Bob, what you say is not unthinkable at all, although it does answer the question
"what could I do *instead* of ..." rather than the one I actually asked, but seriously ...
Shutting down might be an answer, although it would clear out my tmp directory - which I might not want to have to sort through looking for things I want to save every time I go to work, and also, now that nvram doesn't seem to work for disabling the boot chime, it can get a bit embarassing booting up in a busy meeting if I have forgotten to mute before I shut down. There are all sorts of other issues, such as editing documents, loading web pages and so on that I would have to set up again.
Your suggestion of letting Apple know is a good one - thank you for the link.
    Take care,
    Mark

  • Switching between VTs kills Xorg and GDM restarts

    Hi,
since yesterday I noticed some sort of severe problem of my system.  I am still trying to locate the reason why this all happens.
My problem looks like this: Every time I switch from X to a VT everything looks fine. But once I want to switch back to X, it dies completely and GDM restarts.
So far so bad, first I thought GDM is creating this and downgraded it to 2.22. That didn't help, so back up to date.
But I activated its debug modus to receive this output:

Once I switch back, GDM reloads and I get the same output with GDM stating nothing why this happened.
I looked through all log files without finding anything obvious. My problem is, that I am not sure if it is GDM doing this or some buggy configuration of a programme doing rubbish...
Some helpful advice will be nice.
    Regards,
    Simon

    Problem solved temporarily:
I downgraded all X.org packages related to the recent update for xorg-server 1.9. Since then GDM doesn't seam to crash. Otherwise I noted that 1.9 is not much of a matured release yet. I read many instability issues here.
Btw, would a mod like to move this thread to update issues? This thread will better fit in that section.
    Thanks

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
*Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
Another possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • How do I disable "reopen windows when logging back in"

Everytime I shutdown the mac asks me "reopen windows when logging back in". In fact the default is to do reopen all open programs when I restart. he annoying thing with apple is that when you close a window like Safari and iPhoto the program itself is not closed unless you spend extra time to go and QUIT each program. So naturally at least Mail and Safari are up when I'm ready to shutdown. On a other days MS Word, Excel and iPhoto are open as well. This is annoying to have to remember to QUIT everything when I'm sleepy before shutting down. Mac is supposed to be convenient not tedious. Please stop asking me if I want to reopen on logging back in. And worse yest stop assuming that this is the default action. Someone please help!

You can uncheck the option box on the shut down screen. Or you can use a terminal command to disable it completely. Or you can get in the habit of using Command+Q (No Caps on the Q, Command+q) to shut down programs that you no longer need running. And if you get in that habit of using Command+q you don't need to close the window or windows that are open for that program. Command+q will close the program and the active window/s.
    EDIT:
Here is a site that give you the command to disable this annoying ?FEATURE?.

  • V120 server scrolls message when rebooting

I have just obtained a V120 server and installed Solaris 10 3/05 (should probabaly have installed a later version, but it was the only one I had in my possession at the time....I am downloading the latest version today...) on it and patched it up with the latest 10_Recommended cluster. I also installed 2 kingston sync 133 1GB memory sticks in it instead of the Sun 512 MB sticks that were in it before installing the O/S....
I noticed that when I was installing the O/S, when it rebooted, it came up with a scrolling message (which I will try and insert a jpg of at the end of this msg. Every time after that, when I would do a reboot, init 6, or anything that would restart the box, it would just start scrolling the message. If I would poweroff and poweron in the LOM, it would start fine or if I would init 5 and power back on, no problem....only when rebooting.....
Anyway, I replaced the Kingston memory with the Sun memory that came with it and it works just fine.....
I guess I have to stick with Sun memory, huh? Or is there a work-around for the non-Sun memory that I can try?
    Thanx .....
Now, here is (hopefully) the error message....

Had to copy and paste text, so formatting is a little funny.
PSTATE TBA and DCU Control are on one line.
AFSR AFAR and PIL are on the next.
TL TT TPC and TNPC are on the last....
The same message just keeps scrolling until I poweroff.
I will probably just end up getting some more SUN RAM, but it would be good to know if there is a simple work-around....thanx,

    Allan,
Though that platform uses PC133 RAM, your Kingston DIMMs may just not be compatible.
The systemboard of the V120 requires ECC RAM be used, and not all PC133 sticks are ECC.
Most RAM vendors have a compatibility tool on their web sites. Kingston Technology does as well (www.kingston.com). Please consider using it to reference their part number to compatibility with that computer model.
That would eliminate that as a contributing factor to the errors you observed.
