Gnome 3 launcher customization

I use Gnome 3.4 on ArchLinux. How I can move the Gnome launcher called "Activites" from the left side of screen to the right?

Gnome 3 doesn't let you move things around on the top bar, most of the shell's interface is hard-coded. However, you could visit https://extensions.gnome.org/ and look for an extension that might provide the functionality you are looking for.
I don't know of any extension that provides this, though.

Is there a way to make GNOME panel launcher icons smaller? (like in XFCE panels...)
Or, is there any other type of launcher that can be used?

If you downsize the panel, the icons will be downsized too..
There is also the drawer applet, which can contain the icons...

  • Stop gnome panel launcher icons from scaling when resizing the panel

    hi guys!
ive been trying to customize my gnome de and cant find the answer to this. i want to have a thick panel say around 36px with a large main menu icon and 22x22 launcher icons. i tried checking gconf-editor and dont see any option to set this. when i resize the panel to 36 px, the launcher icons follow the size of the panel. i want them to stay at 22x22 even when the panel is resized to 36 px.
below is a screenshot of what im talking about.
please let me know what you think! many thanks!

    hey droog!
thanks for your reply! tried that and it didnt work. i tried this:
    gtk-icon-sizes = "panel=16,16:gtk-large-toolbar=16,16:gtk-small-toolbar=16,16:gtk-button=16,16"
it did change the icons in the menu bar. and the icons in the notification area. but it did not change the custom launcher icons...
do you know if they have a howto for this?

  • Slim/Gnome (ck-launch-session did not fix)

Hey guys, I've searched up and down wikis and fora today to no avail.  My problems are as follows:
    When using SLiM with GNOME:
    1) nm-applet and the "Network Connections" gui give no control over the network unless run as root
    2) No GUI way to shut down
Everywhere I go has said to either A) add ck-launch-session to .xinitrc (or the occasional other place, none of which have worked for me) or B) edit policy kit things, using CLI tools that have man pages but I don't actually have, and don't know where to get.  I can't even go and edit them myself, because where the files are supposed to be are restricted even to root, or don't exist.
For now, I switched to gdm, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd like to switch back to SLiM, if I can get it to work.  Just open to ideas at this point.  Let me know what information you need, I'd be happy to get it for you.  Thanks in advance.

Yes, it does, but I had to do some weird stuff to make it work.  If you need, I can try to look up the changes I made, but I'll be lucky to find it.  I've been trying everything I can think of to fix the problems caused by this.
EDIT: Actually, found it again, by accident. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ud … if_present
Are you in power and network groups?
    Yes, to both.

  • [Solved] Programs don't show up in gnome search

    Hi everybody,
I just completed my first Arch install and I'm so far very, very pleased with how quick and lightweight it is. I just have a quick question.
I just installed firefox using pacman, but for some reason it doesn't show up in the gnome search launcher thing. If i hit the super key and then search for "firefox" I just get no results. I can launch firefox using alt+F2.
Is there something I need to do to get it to show up?
    Thanks.

  • Firewall GUI no longer launching after installing ORACLE 11g..

The Firewall GUI used to work fine until I installed 11g2 now when I try to launch the gui the application seems like it wants to start but never does.
Anyone running into a similar problem or know whow to fix it?
I really don't like getting into iptables directly...
    Thanks for any help.
    Merry Christmas!

11g is installed in the grid (Grid Infrastructure) and oracle (RDBMS) o/s users. 11g does not touch the X-windows configuration in any way.
iptables (Linux firewall) runs as root. Not an grid. Not as oracle.
So you need a X11 session as root. If the server boots in character mode (init 3), then logon as root on the server's console and then type startx to start a X11 windows session for running admin GUI tools.
If the server boots into X11 mode (init 5), then logon as root and via the (default Gnome) desktop launch the applicable admin GUI.
Alternatively - for remote use. ssh into the server as root and start a vncserver. From your local client, connect to te VNC root desktop using vncviewer.
If these options do not work - provide a copy-and-paste of what you have attempted and the kernel's response to it.

  • Evince delayed launch problem

I'm running gnome with evince 2.28.1-1
I have problems launching evince. Sometimes it takes about 30 seconds before it starts. I get this error in the terminal:
** (evince:12342): WARNING **: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
It might be some problem with the new policykit used in GNOME? After the delayed start I can open multiple documents instantly, but suddenly this delay shows up again, and all the opened evince processes don't respond.
I'm running without GDM. GNOME is launched by "exec gnome-session" in my .xinitrc.

Change it to exec ck-launch-session gnome-session.

I have gnome 2.26 installed with nxserver 3.2.0-73  and nxnode 3.2.0-73 installed.
When I log into the computer locally, everything works fine.
Logging into gnome via nx, when the gnome-keyring-daemon is running, anytime after I open
either gnome-appearance-properties, gnome-keyboard-properties or any of the other gnome programs,
launching programs causes NX to terminate.
With logging on, it just says nx session terminated.
nothing showes up in the main message log.
using "exec dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/gnome-session" as my command.
I have fonts installed and everything.
Both XFCE and KDE 4.2 work fine in NX.
I have all the font packages installed also.
I have set up older versions of gnome with nx on other machines and never had this problem.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I just also noticed that opening .jpg files crashes NX.

    Hi,
Then you will have to modify the standard UWL configuration file.
If your task looks like a standard task (maybe you copied a standard task and modified it slightly), you have to find the ItemType corresponding to the standard task in the UWL configuration file then copy this ItemType and adjust it for you custom task. Please take a look at my last post in another thread : Re: UWL - how to approve purchase requisitions
If your task is 100% custom then you'll have to find out what is behind the Approve and Reject buttons in the Business Workflow and modify the UWL configuration file accordingly. For instance if a function module is used to approve or reject the request you can define your approve and reject actions using the FunctionModuleActionHandler. • [SOLVED] enable Ctrl+Alt+L to lock?

I just installed and configured gnome after moving from ubuntu on my netbook, and I always used Ctrl+Alt+L to lock my workstations. How can I enable this in Arch? I installed the xscreensaver package based on a tip I found elsewhere, but that doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks!

If you use gnome-screensaver, launch "Keyboard Shortcuts" in your preferences menu and change the shortcut.
If you want to use xscreensaver see http://justlinux.com/forum/showpost.php … ostcount=7.
Or you could have just spent a minute googling.

  • GDM shows only gray screen.

When booting Arch, I will get to the GDM login screen with no problem but then, after logging in it will hang at a gray screen. If I open up another terminal with Alt+Ctrl+F2 and type startx, GNOME will launch properly in both screens. My .xinitrc file says exec gnome-session. What am I doing wrong?

  • Linux on Parallels, worth trying?

I have the standard 17" 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo 1 gb iMac. I'm interested in trying to use some Linux apps in Parallels desktop, but I'd really appreciate some advice before I dive into something that may be over my head!
    1) Do I need to upgrade to 2 Gigs of memory for Parallels to function effectively?
    2) What level of functionality will my Linux VM have? Will I be able to use the internet effectively via Ethernet? What about file storage on the hard drive?
    3) I assume the answer to question #2 leads directly into this question: what distribution of Linux to try? I've heard Ubuntu is the 'easiest for a beginner' but from my forum searches I'm wondering if it might be harder to get running correctly under Parallels.
    4) I'm a long-time Mac user, but I am not an expert, and I'm used to dealing at things at the level of the GUI and my applications. Am I biting off more than I can chew? I've heard that getting Linux working is tricky under optimal conditions, and I assume doing it in a virtualized environment adds another layer of complexity. If I need to spend a hundred hours learning more before I try this, somebody let me know!

    2 ghz Core2duo iMac 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The Intel 386 32 bit version is what I used. I don't think the PPC version would work at all. Here is the name of the disk image I installed from:
    ubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso
I was using the most recent Parallels build, 1970, and a custom Virtual Machine setup as follows. Guest OS is "Other Linux kernel 2.6" 512 MB RAM, CD/DVD drive default, 8 gig hdd, Bridged Ethernet Default, USB Autoconnect on. I set bootup to CD first, and targeted it to the above disk image file. The VM launched to desktop, and I selected the Install shortcut. It installed to the hdd image, and I told it to shut down (not restart). After stopping the VM, I retargeted the boot sequence of the VM to start with the hdd and it launched successfully. To change screen resolution to 1440 x 900 I had to specify that resolution in the Parallels VM setup, then run a Terminal script from the Linux terminal inside the VM, referenced in the link several posts above. Shutdown again, and after reboot, the GNOME desktop launched at that size. Everything has worked perfectly, although (for instance) I didn't setup the virtual machine to do audio. Mac OS X has much easier tools for audio and video than Linux so I decided to focus on creating a simple VM that wouldn't have to do a lot of I/O, which tends to be the tricky part of virtualization. Internet performance has been fine though, so the defaul Ethernet adapter seems to work great.
Now that I have a functional and stable Ubuntu 6.06 GNOME configuration, I want to try to setup a 6.10 Kubuntu Edgy/KDE machine. Thanks to the magic of virtualization, I can do that without affecting the other version at all. YMMV but I'm very impressed by how well my iMac works as a Linux machine.

  • Setxkbmap from GUI

    Hello!
I'm trying to set up quick little keyboards layout chooser which would on icon/applet click execute this command:
$ setxkbmap -rules evdev -layout es -model evdev
but, when I include this in "Create a new launcher" on desktop, either through "execute this command in terminal" or
directly, it doesn't do anything. Why is this not working from GUI and just from terminal? Can you maybe show me
how to write a little python GUI script that will execute this command, or point me to some link where I could learn this?
    Thank you :-)

<drcouzelis> I use Cinnamon GUI (fork of GNOME). Here's .desktop file I tried with:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Comment=Choose Spanish Keymap
Terminal=false # tried with true, too
    Name=es
Exec=setxkbmap -rules evdev -layout es -model evdev
    Type=Application
    Icon=gnome-panel-launcher
Maybe I could try writing my own cinnamon applet including setxkbmap command?
<Ashren> Thank you, it works with xterm part! :-) How do I do it without xterm, because when I exclude the xterm command, it doesn't do anything.
The notify-send little thing is great, i didn't know how to use it before so I've learnt something today.
Could you guys maybe tell me how this can be done from python, if it could be done easily, just curious to learn how to do it from different perspectives

  • [Solved] Synaptics options not being saved

When i manually set options in /etc/x11/xorg.conf.d/10-synaptics.conf they aren't being used by the driver.  The only way i have found to save settings is by changing them via synclient.  The problem with this is that synclient doesn't save your options.
I made a script that sets my touchpad settings after gnome 3 kicks in, i've tried
    running it from rc.local
and running the commands from ~/.xinitrc, before and after gnome 3 launches.
I never could get it to work, i did find out that synclient has to be run after x is started.
Can anyone help me out by either pointing out where synaptic pulls its settings or by showing me where the best place to run a startup script after x starts would be .  Any help is much appreciated.  Also it's almost 3am here so typos/logic not expected to be in tip-top shape.
    tldr; touchpad settings won't save.

Yeah im using synclient and its not saving to 10-synaptics.conf like the article says it should.
Nvm, gnome 3 was setting its own options, had to disable that for 10-synaptics.conf to pick up.
