Gnome 3 starting in fallbackmode

Hi all.
I've a Inspiron 9400 with a Radeon Mobility X1400 card. Gnome 3 starts in fallback it says that card have no accelerated support, but when I try a Fedora Live with Gnome 3 it starts correctly in standard mode.
I'm not using t xorg.conf file and I'm using the open source drivers xf86-video-ati (the same as Live Fedora).
Some logs:
$HOME/.xsession-errors

Ok, compilation successful with the above patch applied. I also rebooted to make sure everything will get loaded for scratch and applied export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none in /etc/environment. So far:
1) Fonts are looking just fine, no artifacts whatsoever in the panel or elsewhere I got so far.
2) Applications menu still crash.
3) GTK2 applications also crash. I opened up leafpad, it run, but failed to open a file and crashed the entired desktop. I have no oxygen-gtk installed on my system.
Generally speaking I like GNOME 3 quite much, not as much as GNOME 2, but crashing the whole desktop by just one application or just something less importand like the menu, its just a show stopper. I hope they will somehow fix these issues in the next releases.

  • Edited gnome menus with Alacarte - gnome wont start anymore!

    Hi!
First off; I've had this problem about a year ago, and the only thing that repaired it was to reinstall Arch... I made a similar thread at the time, but didn't get any help.
I use Alacarte to edit my gnome menus, but when I delete the items that I dont use, the next time I try to log into the computer, gnome wont start. It stops loading the desktop while the splash-screen shows, and I can see the mouse-cursor and conky in the background, but no menus or panels, and the splash-screen wont go away either.
Luckily, this time I had both openbox and gnome installed, so I was able to use openbox to write this thread.
Anyone got any tips on how to fix this without reinstalling my os?
    Cheers

Okay so I found a way to work around this problem. If I create a new user it works again, BUT I want my old user back. If I delete my main user, and recreate it with the same username etc, will it use my old home directory with all my settings etc?

Running Arch on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop with 512MB RAM. 2GHz. Athlon proc. -getting a bit long in the tooth..and the laptop
Which of these can safely be disabled in Gnome session start up programmes?
    1. AT SPI Registry Wrapper
    2. Disk Notifications
    3. Gnome Keyring Daemon
    4. Gnome Login Sound (I guess this is OK to disable upon preference)
    4. Gnome Settings Daemon
    5. Gnome Settings Daemon Helper
    6. Gnome Splash Screen
    7. PolicyKit Authentication Agent
    8. Power Manager
    9. Remote Desktop-DISABLED!
    10. Screensaver-need this one...
    11. Seahorse Daemon
    12. Visual Assistance-DISABLED!
It is unlikely I will need to connect to this laptop eg. peripherals, remote, hard disks etc..
I would like to disable as many as possible and maximize free RAM.
    Any tips much appreciated.

If it's in your Dock click it and hold, check the Options and see if it's set to Open on Login.

  • Conky disappers when Gnome-Desktop starts

    Hi there,
I've installed conky as a systemmonitor and would like to let it start when my Gnome-Desktop starts. To achieve this, I put the "conky"-command under System -> Preferences -> Session. In principle this works, because when Gnome starts, I can see that conky is startet, too.
But when Gnome starts Metacity, conky ist shifted to the background (or whatever). With "top" I can see, that it's still running, but I can't see it anymore.
Does anyone know, how I can start conky automatically when Gnome starts up?

Gnome lays its desktop above the root-window in its own borderless window. But conky is drawn directly to the root-window so the Gnome Desktop is always on top of it. The only workaround is to configure conky to run it its own window or not start the gnome-desktop executable.

In Xorg.0.log everything seems ok and there are no errors.
There is a fact, that GNOME starts successfully from another user (root). So the problem could be in user settings or some unclosed sessions. Do not know what to do from logs
    Thanks in advance!

Ok. I solved this for my issues.
The solution was found on the ubuntu forum:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1082257
    What I've done is:
    mv /myuser/.gconfd/saved_state /myuser/.gconfd/saved_state_backup
Then I had a completely recovered GNOME session on a next boot.
Moreover, it seems for me that saved_state could be completely removed in this case.
I'm going to go try that and see if it works

  • Get gnome to start on xinit

I just reinstalled arch to a newer version(2.6.13). Everything works perfect except gnome does not start when i do xinit on the command line.
I edited xinitrc - removed entries for fwm, the clock etc and replaced it with
exec gnome-session but this doesnt work.
Xinit starts only the x server and one terminal into which i can then type gnome-session to start gnome.
What am i missing? My xinitrc now is identical to the one on the old install.

If you want gdm to start on boot edit /etc/inittab

  • Gnome panel started twice

After my last system update, anytime i start gnome i get a message that basically says "panel is already running ..." How do i sort this out. Its nothing major just kinda annoying.
    Thanks.

I found a workaround for the problem.
Install xfce4-panel and xfce4-xfapplet-plugin and you will be able to run the gnome applets in the excellent and lightweight xfce4-panel.
    It works fine for me

  • Gnome doesnt start automatically

    Hi,
I ve followed all the steps that described in the beginners guide, but still cannot make it to have gnome at once.
Although i am able to login at gdm, what i am getting next is an x-session with 3 terminal windows.
If i want to have gnome i have to write exec gnome-session.
Is there any way to have gnome desktop without the need to write all the time exec gnome-session.
P.S I ve copied the /skel/.xinitrc to my /home directory and added exec dbus-launch gnome-session to it.
I still can not figure out what i am doing wrong.....
Please give me a hint cause if i cannot start the desktop i will be dissapointed.

    MrWeatherbee wrote:
x-tra wrote:i cant believe that i forgot t select gnome session from the gdm screen that is i couldnt see any gnome!!!!
Yea. Based on your first post:
x-tra wrote:Although i am able to login at gdm, what i am getting next is an x-session with 3 terminal windows.
it seemed to me that you were successfully getting to GDM login but just were not getting to your gnome session, so that's why I didn't go into great detail about setting up GDM and just suggested using a different init file (~/.gnomerc in this case).
But, basically, you were choosing the wrong session at GDM, and once you selected Gnome, you were good to go, is that correct?
Anyway, back to dbus-launch ... any background on why you chose this methodology over putting dbus in the rc.conf daemons? I'm not criticizing, I've just not seen it done this way, so I thought you could provide some insight into your choice.
it doesnt make any difference its just another way to load dbus and having some options for the gnome-session.
Your solution is much easier so i stick with that.

  • Kded crashes on amarok quit in gnome, cannot start jack after

I'm running amarok in gnome and it works fine except that I'm getting the KDE crash handler telling me that kded has cashed just after I quit amarok. And amarok seems to keep holding onto hw:0, so I cannot start jack after. Which prosess could I kill to make jack start?
    Thanks

If you import the modified folder you'll just end up with duplicates as the ratings and other metadata will be lost. It's starting over from scratch.
    alexkess:
Since it works OK in the other account it might be a preference file other than iPhoto's. Try the following:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

  • Gnome wont start after login

I can get it to start manually with gnome-session but it wont autostart after i login.
    I added exec gnome-session to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and to $HOME/.xinitrc.

isez2001 wrote:I keep seeing dbus 0.93 mentioned along with Gnome 2.16, and was wondering if perhaps the dbus update was prematurely put into current when Gnome 2.16 was moved to extra?
It's probably a mirror syncronisation issue. A lot of packages were moved from testing to current/extra.  Probably users either didn't fully updated their system (pacman -Syu) or are using a mirror which haven't sync yet.
Also, make sure that you don't use a different mirror for current and extra. If you use an up-to-date mirror for current and a less up-to-date mirror for extra, you might get this kind of problem. You can temporarily switch to a more up-to-date mirror or to the main server to make this big update.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3 starts in fallback mode.

I was using Gnome 3 with no problems until I restarted today, it goes straight to fallback mode now, it says there's something wrong with the graphics driver.

To which xorg version did you downgrade? I downgraded to 1.12.0-1 and still no luck -
    My .xsession-errors says
    /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
localuser:XXXX being added to access control list
    /etc/gdm/Xsession: Setup done, will execute: /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- gnome-session
gnome-session[1169]: WARNING: Session 'gnome' runnable check failed: Exited with Code 1
No errors in Xorg.0.log, and glxinfo |grep rendering gives
    direct rendering: Yes
    lspci |grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c)
    EDIT:
Temporary workaround: Running gnome-shell --replace via alt+f2 or a terminal

  • [SOLVED]e17/gnome media started displaying on desktop.

I deactivated the desktop media display in gnome with gconf-editor, and recently installed e17.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to disable the media desktop icons that have suddenly reappeared in gnome (and incidentally in e17, too.)
I found it in the e17 config menu.  now I feel a bit foolish.

I agree with ya there. I have been poking at e17 off and on, and I do enjoy it. I rather like gnome too, but it is slightly more work to get interesting looks. Your's sounds like an interesting arrangement. I haven't had the time, or spare cash, to branch out into dual monitor setups.
I have found fluxbox and fvwm to be perfect for those times when I just need a quick system up with a couple of basics, like a browser of a real fast WYSIWYG text editor. (sorta like Asus's 15-sec embedded distro) I am planning to put one of them on top of a near core Arch install, and compare it to Puppy, just for kicks.
The only one to really drive me nuts is KDE, and ya, I  know there is a pretty good sized contingent of hardcore KDE fans here on Arch. Something about the way it is organized bothers me, but I just can't put my finger on what it is precisely.
Wow...   at least we are running tangent to the topic in a solved thread.

  • Gnome-open starts /bin/bash -ic (uname) and uses 100% CPU to open gvim

I've posted this on stackoverflow and got no answer, hopefully some archers can help me out:
    When I execute
    gnome-open textfile
I expect gvim to open up. Instead what happens is that the command hangs. When I check htop I see:
    /bin/bash -ic (uname) > /tmp/{some random string of characters}
using 100% of the CPU. When I kill the process (and I have to use -9), then cpu usage goes back to normal and gvim opens.
    Running
    gvim -f textfile
    without gnome-open works perfectly.
Any ideas where this process is coming from? Or what it's even doing?
    /bin/bash -ic (uname)
    doesn't even run for me.
    Thank you!
