Gnome: additional mouse cursors?
Just swtiched over from Ubuntu to Arch on my main desktop (yeah!) and am wondering where I can find additional mouse cursors for Gnome. I'm not wanting anything rediculous, just the 'ubuntu clearlooks' standard white cursor with animated 'wait' cursor. If I right click my desktop>change background>theme>customize>pointer I only see a few options:
handhelds
redglass
whiteglass

Gnome Black Screen with Mouse Cursor after Login
I am using Archlinux 64bit with a Gnome Desktop Environment. Everything was running normally uptill today. When i ran "sudo fc-cache", my system froze. I couldnt open any other app but i was able to access terminal. I restarted using "reboot" command. After that I was unable to log in to my desktop.
The Gnome login screen comes and after entering the correct username and password, all I can see is a black screen with mouse cursor. I then started gnome manually with "startx" and it worked. But still I am unable to use normally (that is the graphical login). I reinstalled gdm but it didnt work. Please help me out.there are a lot of processess running... dunno killing which process will not cause a problem

Mouse cursor disappears in GNOME 3.2
Hi all,
I have been having this issue recently with GNOME. I never had this problem in Gnome 3.0 before i upgraded, but now I'm having it almost every day. After the screen turns off, i can't get a mouse cursor anymore. I can see things react when i mouseover them, but i can't see the cursor. I've tried taking the system all the way down to init 1 and back up to init 5 and it's still gone.
I saw a similar post here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=110023 where a solution was to install the nVidia driver, but 3.2 isn't ready for that yet.
Is anyone else having this problem?
If so, what has worked?I installed Arch x86_64 yesterday and am running Gnome3 (updated) with the xf86-video-ati driver (HD 5830 video card). I am having a similar mouse problem. I cannot see my mouse cursor when it is within a window, such a firefox or terminal. But when the cursor is outside the client area, such is the window border or on the desktop, I can see the mouse cursor just fine.
Anyone else having similar issues? -

I work in a company that uses Solaris 10 OS on its computers, with JDS and CDE as desktop managers (no ordinary GNOME or KDE installed as optional ones). Before getting this job I wasn't a frequent UNIX/Linux user, though I had a rather good acquaintance with "Unixoid" desktop systems like GNOME and KDE. For some time I was playing with these on Fedora Core 4 on my home computer. One thing I liked was the ability to easily change desktop themes AND cursor themes. Personally, I like the default Fedora Core's Bluecurve theme very much (and its mouse cursor theme in particular). However, on JDS I can't manage to find the way to install additional cursor themes apart from the 4 default ones (small and large black pointers and their inverted white versions). I suppose I could compile and install Bluecurve sources as a whole on my Solaris 10 box (I am already using some of its icons in my $HOME/.themes folder), but I am not sure whether it will affect my cursor choices. Could anyone please clarify the issue?I've managed to figure out WHY I can't install my custom cursor theme on Solaris 10 on SPARC, but I can't manage to figure out HOW exactly to circumvent this problem (if at all).
The problem is this: Xsun, Sun's only X server for Solaris 10 on SPARC platform, does not support the Xcursor library, that is required for theming cursors. I've downloaded its sources from X.Org's site and somehow managed to compile and install this library at /usr/local/lib directory. But it seems that my system just ignores its presence after restarting JDS and nothing changes. I suppose that it's impossible to "shove" Xcursor up Xsun... So why is it so? It's such a simple and small library that gives a serious boost to the overall usability of the system, then why exclude it? It seems a more than strange decision to me... If anyone knows if it's possible to "force-feed" Xcursor to Xsun, please let me know... -
Xorg-server 1.6 - black screen with mouse cursor

First of all: I'm really new to Arch, so maybe there is a real easy fix for this problem
Since upgrading to xorg-server 1.6 (and today to 1.6.1) I'm not able to get a running Desktop Environment.
Usually I am using gnome with compiz-fusion on my Geforce 4 (nvidia-96xx 96.43.11-4 driver).
When I boot my machine i see gdm and I am able to login. I can hear my login sound but I only get a black screen with a mouse cursor.
I added a new test user to my system without compiz and get the same.
I tried my old xorg.conf from 1.5, generated a new one with X -configure and tried without xorg.conf but everytime the same
Actually I'm not sure if the xorg update is responsible for this, because i did not watch the upgrade-process....
I googled this problem and was searching similar things in this froum, but I wasn't able to find something

Sometimes, when I boot and type in startx (I'm not even a GNOME user--I use dwm and no graphical login manager), I just get a black screen. No mouse cursor, so I think X doesn't even load. It only started with the xserver 1.6 update and the update to that hasn't changed anything. What I've been doing is just rebooting until it loads normally (takes one to three times). Is anyone else having this problem?

We are an enterprise organization with staffs logging in to their systems using domain username and password.
For some of our users having Windows 7 as OS, when they log in with their domain credentials a blank screen appears with movable mouse cursor, this screen does not go away until we disconnect them from LAN as well as wireless after which only the login
happens.

If it doesn't reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers as possible causes. If a recently installed program, device, or driver prevents Windows from running correctly, you can start your computer
in safe mode and then remove the program that's causing the problem.
If it still in the safe mode, we may need to repair the installation with the recovery media.
In addition, please logon the problematic computer with the domain user account which works fine in other computer to test to see if it's the user account issue.

[SOLVED] log into KDE given a blank black screen with mouse cursor
hi,
noticed kwin using much higher cpu usage then normal, restarted KDE, everything seemed ok and then, while copying a file over to a samba share, my desktop went black with only a mouse cursor.
Restarted KDE, rebooted pc, reinstalled KDE (everything), xorg, nvidia, deleted xorg.conf created new user but nothing will give me my desktop back
once when i logged on, i had a kde crash report and messages on my widgets saying missing components. Tried to submit bug but missing debugging tools.
sometimes KDE won't log in at all.
forced an fsck on next boot with no errors found.
please help

EDIT: [solved] I had filled up my /var partition. cleaned pacman cache and all is good again. Phew!

[Solved] Login freezing with busy mouse cursor and black screen.
After installing some recent updates I have suddenly found a problem when starting the login manager for Cinnamon.
After booting I am greeted with a black screen and a "busy" mouse cursor - like a stopwatch. I can't ctrl-alt-backspace to restart X.
What fixes it is - if I ctrl-alt-F2 to a new console and kill -9 the Xorg process. This causes X to restart normally. I have to do this every time now
I don't know if this is systemd related or what, but it only seemed to happen after the updates below.

I don't know the details to be honest, but the title of your post basically describes my situation with GDM when I used accountsservice >0.6.25, so I figured it was worth a shot, since the symptoms were the same.
Also, Cinnamon depends on accountsservice if I'm not mistaken, so it didn't seem unreasonable that the update broke Cinnamon too.
I'm glad it works now. Let's hope a updated, working version of accountsservice is released soon. -
New condition baffling mouse cursor freezes if I put it on a flat surface even with ac plugged in

I am now really stumped. Here is the situation
ac adaptor plugged in mouse freezes
UNTIL I plug in WIRED and working lan cable.
if I unplug the lan cable from the router the mouse cursor freezes.
NOW that would be strange enough BUT if I unplug the LAN cable the mouse freezes again as expected UNTIL I lift up the S10 ( doesn't matter how I do it) the mouse starts to work again!!!! with the ac plugged in. So now you are all thinking it's the ac socket !!! nope thought about that and it's got nothing to do with it. The mouse freezes the moment I put the computer down on a flat surface or even near it.
It's as if the bloody thing is effected by proximity to a mass ? anyone got any ideasHi majorkong,
Additional ideas are possible shorts internal to the system. I definitely have a reason to believe that the unit has a hardware problem. This is either through the touchpad, touchpad cable, or on the motherboard.

Flickering mouse cursor/black bar on iMac 27"
I recently bought a refurb 27" iMac (mid-2010) and did a DIY upgrade to add a SSD in addition to the regular hard drive. I tested the system before cracking it open and everything seemed fine. After the install, I started noticing that the mouse cursor would flicker and sort of ghost itself and also that a small rectangular black bar would appear underneath the cursor. I can use it fine and it doesn't show up when I play games but it's driving me nuts. I know there was some kind of problem if you used an extra monitor but I'm not using one. I took a picture of the problem and can provide it on request. Any input would be appreciated.

In your take-apart and rebuild work, did you have to move anything that has to do with the display, it's associated connecting cables, etc?
Just a guess, but maybe something's been left loose? Something video related?
Given you indicate no issues pre-upgrades, I would believe something might have been goofed physically.

Color depth of the mouse cursor
Upgraded to srss 4.2 yesterday and discovered the addition of Xrender support. After enabling it the mouse cursor switches to an animated one. This looks really horrendous, since the mousecursor is displayed in black and white (1bit color depth). Does anyone know how to increase the color depth of the mouse cursor? The screen is configured with a color depth of 24 bits

Brand New Retina Macbook Pro - Mouse Cursor Disappears
Just bought this new MBP Retain, 13" with the 2.6ghz processor and have not installed much on it. I think the only program I've installed is Spotify.
Aside from that, I'm using it as is, out of the box. No external mouse, keyboard, or any other application aside from an equally new iPhone 5S.
I've had this issue 3 times within the 3 days of ownership, where the mouse cursor will completely disappear from the sceen and it doesn't come back. The computer still functions and I can still do a few things like type (if I'm inside a textbox already, I think), as well as change the volume, brightness and activate the Power button (however, I can't select anything).
I have to do a hard reset to get it back.
This is pretty frustrating for a brand new product. I don't think it's linked to any external factors as nothing additional has been added.VMWare and Chrome are not running at the same time. I'm describing two separate tests.
I'm saying any program that uses a moderate amount of CPU (15-25% of total available CPU capacity) causes the MBP to exceed 200ºF with fans running full speed. Chrome is not the problem, it's an example. VMWare is not the problem, just another example. Probably if I fire up iMovie and start rendering video the same thing will happen. I just don't understand why the MBP can't keep its temperature below 200ºF with the fans on full speed.
If I max out all 8 cores by running 8 instances of "yes > dev/null" in Terminal the temperature reaches 213ºF. -

I have a small issue with my Gnome3 desktop: It uses the default (ugly) X mouse cursors.
Am I missing some package or setting?
Edit: It's even more weird because it may suddenly change to the correct cursors during a session until i logout.
Last edited by init0 (2011-04-12 17:33:46)I have found a lot of customisation options which normally have a corresponding ~/.xxx folder for user specific config (eg /usr/share/themes, /usr/share/icons etc.) are not currently working in Gnome 3 by default. I am sure it is the $XDG_DATA_DIRS (or similar) environment variables not being set to look in /home first (I am sure this will be corrected as Gnome 3 matures and the devs add user config options).
I have found my cursors work correcty (in all but firefox) (using custom Silver-3D cursors). One thing that may help (it has helped solve my "some windows use my cursors and some don't" issue)
in /usr/share/icons create a folder called default. In that folder, create a file called index.theme and populate as follows:
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=xxxxxxx
Where xxxxxx is the name of your theme of choice. The added bonus of doing this is that GDM will use your selected cursor theme as well.
GDM is actually what I have been working on theming today. I have customised the background, cursors, icons, sound theme (I'll admit it, I like a system-ready sound when GDM comes up) and GTK3 themes for it. Now I just have to translate that to my shell.

Firefox mouse cursor using default X11 icons

I'm a brand new Arch user and I'm extremely happy with it. I've got this one remaining nagging issue that I can't seem to find a solution for.
I'm using XFCE 4.4 and have my mouse cursor theme set to pArch-24 but when I move the mouse over a firefox window it reverts back to the small black default X11 icons. I have the gtk-qt-engine installed and any gnome or kde apps I launch use the right mouse theme so it seems to be only firefox (and gdm) where this is happening.
It's a small issue but I spend 90% of my time in firefox.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanksI once had a similar problem under SuSE 10 (but with KDE), and the following solved this:
- Copy your theme directory to /usr/share/icons/ and then choose it in the XFCE-Menu (probably you already did this)
- Now create the folder .icons under /home/username/ and copy your theme directory there as well, and also copy the default folder from /usr/share/icons/ there
- In this default folder you now have to edit the file index.theme and replace (or create) there a line that says Inherits=core with Inherits=name_of_your_icon_directory (spell it the same way, with capital and small letters)
Save this, log off, log on, maybe this solves the problem with firefox. For me it did back then.
EDIT: I just realised that there is no longer a default-folder under /usr/share/icons/
Hm, forget what I wrote, or try to create it by yourself (copy your icon directory to the name default and then edit the file). Don't know if it will work... -
[SOLVED]Mouse cursor changes between applications
Hi, everyone this thing is driving me crazy. I'm still searching for some good solution for this.
When i move the mouse cursor over a kde or java application (using gnome) the cursor changes to the system default, that black ugly thing. I know there is a way to do it by changing the default cursor theme, but when i do it kde and java applications don't launch. Someone please explain this on easy words, or some other solution please!
