Gnome automounting problem...

Hi,
I installed Arch few days ago and I still have few issues. Well they are not too  serious but they are really annoying. Few info about my system. It's Dell Inspiron E1505. I have installed stock kernel 2.6.18-7, dbus (0.62-3), hal (0.5.8.1-1), pmount (0.9.13-1), gnome-volume-manager (1.5.15-4), udev 101-1.
My biggest problem is automounting of removable devices. I use gnome and I am used to that gnome volume manager mounts my cds, dvds and usb sticks. Well system recognised them, but I have to click on them to mount. I searched forums to find an answer and it seems that some have the same problem, but I found no clear answer.
The user is already member of storage group and this are my start up services:
DAEMONS=(@acpid @915resolution @syslog-ng @hal @dbus @alsa @network @powernowd)
Does anyone know what I should do to solve this problem?

Well, for one gnome-volume-manger shouldn't ever mount anything O.o or atleaste I've never heard anything about this. HAL is what automounts devices so they work for me . Btw what is with the "@" symbol before you daemons? That doesn't need to be there, try removing them and trying again. I just have DAEMONS=(hal), ect.

  • Gnome automount and media.repo under Oracle Linux 6.3

    Hello,
    I experiencing a strange behavior testing the following under Oracle Linux 6.3 (x86-64-bit) UEK2 with all latest updates. I selected the Gnome desktop packages using the "customize now" ratio button when installing the OS
    * Log in to a graphical shell such as GNOME
    * Insert addition media disk into the computer
    * Observe the media is mounted by the session
    * Wait a couple of seconds
    * Observe the /etc/yum.repos.d/packagekit-media.repo now exists
    The above is explained in more details at http://people.redhat.com/rhughes/media-repo.txt
    I don't know what the "addition media disk" is, but inserted the Oracle Linux 6.3 x86_64 binary distribution DVD, which also has media.repo file in the root directory. And btw, I'm using VirtualBox and the DVD is an .iso disk image.
    I'm experiencing the following:
    Gnome automount works and automatically opens the DVD when inserted.
    It does not create the /etc/yum.repos.d/packagekit-media.repo file.
    It actually does create the named repo file, but only after one waits about 15 minutes. Perhaps this has anything to do with gpk-update-icon, but when run manually it hangs.
    With the packagekit-media.repo file finally created. The gpk-application however complains: "The group list was invalid".
    I know how to create a yum configuration file pointing to a local repository, which is also coverd in the Oracle Linux 6.3 distribution readme. I just wonder about the problem. Th automatic business with the media.repo file seems broken and useless. I did one more test using the original RHEL kernel which, as expected, did not make a difference.
    Does anyone know more about it?
    Thanks!

    I cannot create an SR, but I did some more tests creating my own DVD, playing with the info in the media.repo file. It seems matching the mediaid and .discinfo information alone doesn't fix it.
    Actually some of the stuff is explained in the link I already used: http://people.redhat.com/rhughes/media-repo.txt. The problem seems that it doesn't work as advertised.
    It takes exactly 15 min. before the system (gnome) automatically copies the media.repo file from DVD to /etc/packagekit-media.repo. If the file already exists it gets overwritten.
    I think it might be a good idea to make an entry in the media.repo file on the DVD, such as:
    baseurl=file:///media/<disklabel>
    skip_if_unavailable=True
    Then when inserting the DVD under gnome it would not be necessary to create a yum repository configuration file to use the DVD. The 15 min. delay will have to be fixed, which is only supposed to take a couple of seconds.

  • Automount problem with Gnome 2.28

    Hi,
    Since there isn't ayone that seems to check the newbie corner, i'll explain my problem again.
    When i updated my gnome from 2.26 to 2.28, my system stopped to automount DVDs and USB devices.
    Is there anyway to have this working again apart from going back to 2.26 or changing my desktop environment ?
    Thanks for help !

    I assume that you get a "not authorized"-Message (or something similar, i am currently not on gnome to check what it was for me).
    For me the following solved the problem:
    As root create a file "/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/mount.pkla" with the following content (the filename does not really matter as long as the extension is .pkla and is located in this directory):
    [allow me to mount my damn drives]
    Identity=unix-group:wheel
    Action=org.freedesktop.devkit.disks.*
    ResultAny=yes
    This allows every user in the group "wheel" (this is the group of users that are allowed to su, see here) to do anything that is related to disks. This configurationfile is found by the policykit that is used by Gnome to find out what it is allowed to do. See here for more information about policykit.

  • Automounting in Gnome. encoding problem

    I have problems with encoding of automounting devices as cdroms and flashdrives with my local encoding
    ru_RU.UTF-8. I have no before with the same configs on the KDE!
    How can I solve my problem?

    Using gconf-editor, go to /system/storage/default_options/vfat and add to mount_options the string "utf8".
    That solved it for me.

  • Gvm automounting problems [Solved]

    Ok I was able to successfully install gnome-volume-manager and get it to automount my cdrom drives correctly, but only as root; I stick in a disc, it gets read, and the nautilus file browser appears with its content. This is all great, except that I can't get it to work for a regular user.
    If I insert a disc as a regular user I can see the volume name, but it doesn't appear to actually mount the disc until I manually right click on the drive in nautilus and select the 'mount' option. GVM is set to defaults just like root btw.
    Obviously this is a permissions related problem. Is there some group I have to add my user to? I tried the 'storage' and 'optical' groups to no avail :?

    I guess it was the optical & storage groups after all. I had added the user to those groups before without any luck, but I decided to try it again and...tada! Go figure

  • [SOLVED] udev-145 and gnome automount

    Hi!
    I tried using udev-145, mainly for networmanager latest version which requires it, however before I even got to using new NM I noticed that my USB flash keys, mp3 player etc. doesn't show up in gnome, dmesg shows new devices and stuff, but they aren't automounted
    Is this a known problem or I'm sort of missing smth?
    regards

    Nope, but if this is known as "must have along with new udev" I'll do that...
    Thanks for clue, will report back with results.
    Is anything else is needed from testing?
    P.S. I'm trying not to install anything from testing anyway, just packages that I have to have to fix some problems with other packages Currently I have some problem with NM, so I'm trying to fix that by compiling it form git which requires udev>143 or so.
    EDIT: It works! Everything is auto-mounted! Thanx a lot... I wonder why it's not in dependencies

  • [SOLVED] xfce4 automounting problem on usb dev with utf8 encoded files

    I have problem of auto mounting usb external drive contains utf8 encoded files under xfce4.
    Using hal and dbus for usb device detection.
    Heard that I need to add iocharset=utf8 under fstab or hal fdi configure files and tried them all but didn't work
    usb devices with vfat always got mounted with default charset.
    I found out that exo-mount is the one doing the actual mounting and that it is the one that cannot take all extra mounting options such as iocharset etc.
    Have tried gnome to mount this hard drive and works find with nautilus option that let me set various mount options for each harddrive.
    Is there any way to replace exo-mount with some other alternative mounting tools that work with thunar?
    Any workaround will be helpful as long as I can mount my usb drives with prefer charset so that I don't have to guess all ???marked files.
    Heard that xubuntu replaced that exo-mount with gnome-mount to handle drives with extra mount options such as iocharset.
    but I am pretty new to configuring things and couldn't find the step by step instruction for this so please provide the complete solution.
    Link to the pages that explain workaround would be nice as well.
    Thanks in advance!

    Found the patch for exo-mount so that it takes additional mount options HAL suggests.
    https://bugzilla.altlinux.org/attachmen … ction=diff
    Now my usb drive can be mounted with the proper charset.
    Hope this patch helps others with similar situation as well!

  • Gnome-terminal problems

    Hi there,after upgrade to gnome-terminal 3.12.1-1,I found some errors appears :
    First, when I want to open a new terminal use my custom shortcuts Ctrl+Alt+T,sometimes it will make the whole screen freeze, and I have to switch to another TTY to kill it.Then I check my system log, there are many warnings like:
    org.gnome.Terminal[958]: (gnome-terminal-server:7346): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: g_object_weak_unref: couldn't find weak ref 0x7faec0b2c420(0x14e1550)
    Is there something wrong ?I also try to compile it by myself , but it gives a warning:
    server.c: In function ‘main’:
    server.c:113:5: warning: ignoring return value of ‘chdir’, declared with attribute warn_unused_result [-Wunused-result]
         (void) chdir ("/");
         ^
    are all the problems caused by this ?How could I handle this, can anyone fix that?Thanks for your works.Sorry for my poor English.

    That compiler warning is probably benign (harmless).  The function appears to change the working directory and then return a void pointer.  The pointer is not used because, apparently, in this case it is not needed.

  • [Solved]Gnome settings problem

    Hi all.
    I have some strange problems with Gnome 3.2, it is hard to explain but these screenshots should:
    http://bildr.no/image/1012613.jpeg
    http://bildr.no/image/1012614.jpeg
    In the first picture you can see that something that is selected by default is pink, this happens all over Gnome. In the second one you can see that in nautilus when I want to select with the mouse it creates a white block so you can't see behind. I know it is a settings problem because the same doesn't happen on a new account, but the problem is that I have tried to delete .gnome2/ .gconf and .config but once I start to customize again the problem reappers. So I was wondering if there is anything else that I can try to delete without deleting the whole account or if there is some settings that I could to to remove this problem.
    Thanks in advanced

  • Odd hal automounting problem

    Hi
    usually when I bung a dvd in my drive, hal automounts it to /media and I can see it in thunar
    but all of a sudden it gets mounted to /mnt/cd and when I click on it in thunar I get the following error:
    Failed to mount "stuff".
    Failed to determine the mount point for /dev/hdc
    nor can I eject it, I get a message saying it wasn't mounted by hal:
    how can I find out what is mounting it and stop it??
    I've recently installed banshee and rhythmbox, could this have anything to do with it?

    In case anyone cares, or has a similar problem I fixed this
    I think the problem was I had pmount installed as a dependancy of one of the mp3 players I installed (banshee I think), and it was auto-mounting dvds before hal got a chance.
    When I uninstalled banshee, it didn't uninstall the huge amount of other packages it installed with it. I'm still an arch newbie, and would like to know how I would have uninstalled banshee and all the other packages that come with it using pacman.
    Anyone help?

  • Gnome 3.4 gnome-keyring problem

    hey,
    just upgraded to gnome 3.4.
    First thanks for the hard work over the weekend besides your jobs and private life :-) to bring gnome 3.4.1 to extra.
    i had a problem after log in, that the desktop didn`t come up.
    Found a solution with downgrading gnome-keyring to the version 3.2.2.
    In .xsession-errors there are two lines, which could explain the behaviour:
    /usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon: error while loading shared libraries: libgck-1.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    /usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libgcr-3.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    Any ideas to get theses libraries?
    Or are there old dependencies, that were not completely deleted?
    regards

    I had a problem with evolution and network manager with the gnome-keyring 3.4.1 update. A downgrade to 3.2.2-3 worked, but I have since re-installed (pacman -S) gnome-keyring followed by gcr. That works. Fyi, resintalling gcr then gnome-keyring did not work for me .

  • Gnome numlockx problem [SOLVED]

    After the installation of the latest release 2009.02 of Arch along with Gnome DE, the numlockx package seems not to work. More precisely, when I restart X and enter my credentials, the numlock's led remains off. Any suggestions?
    Last edited by gpan (2009-04-08 07:04:05)

    Ok ok... all along I thought it was working here.
    There is this GConf key
    /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/host-<hostname>/0/numlock_on
    that gnome-settings-daemon uses to set the numlock state between sessions if the "remember_numlock_state" key is checked.
    It is supposed to store the current state of the numlock key.  Setting this to true/false will toggle the numlock key state, and vice versa... meaning, pressing the actual numlock key will alter this GConf key as well.  Right now, the latter does not work, because of the current xkb not alerting gnome-settings-daemon when the numlock key is pressed.
    Upgrading to xorg-1.6.0-1 in testing fixed the problem here.
