[GNOME] Computer Locks Instead of Hibernating

I have the alternative status menu installed and I have never been able to hibernate. The screen just locks. I just added the testing repos to see if that would make a difference but has not.
Linux myhost 3.1.0-4-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Nov 7 22:47:18 CET 2011 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 460 @ 2.53GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

With Suspend, the screen locks also but it does suspend. Hibernate just hangs and the screen stays locked. With latest update alternative status menu does not even show hibernate option. I know my computer can hibernate because I have done so in ubuntu, fedora, chakra etc.

  • Computer locks when trying to change multiplier

My computer locks up in the BIOS when I try to access the CPU Clock Ratio menu option.  Ever since I upgraded Bios to 2.70 on my MS-6373 K7N420 Pro I have been running at 1100 MHz instead of 1400 ( I have an Athalon 1700 ).  My system also locks when I try to access the menu option about CPU Fan.  What can I do?  I'd like to get my processor back to 1400MHz.  I figured it would be a multiplier thing.
    Thanks!

Using the BIOS CPU multiplier option, I changed the multiplier from Default to 11.5 on my Athlon 1600+ XP. Both MBM5 and FuzzyLogic4 report a clock change from 1403 MHz to 1537 MHz. (Last night I began tweaking my K7N420D after upgrading BIOS from 2.6 to 2.7.)
The FSB is still my habitual 133/266/66. I've never used an unlocking kit or made changes to the hardware. Did I somehow receive an unlocked 1600+XP CPU? Is there another explanation?

  • Yosemite:  Computer locks up (rolling beachball) during startup

    23-Oct2014
    Apple Support Community:
I have had nothing but problems installing Yosemite on my new Mac Pro.  I bought the computer about six months ago as soon as they were averrable.
After I push the start button, it take at least 5 minutes for the computer to get to my login screen so I can enter my password.  Then it taks 10 minutes of the rolling beachball to allow me to actually enter my password.  Then the computer locks up.  I have had it run beyond an hour. before pushing the off button.
I have tried using disk utility disk repair and permissions repairs on all the attached hard drives.
Also, I have had lots of problems downloading podcasts on iTunes.  Getting podcasts is one of the main purposes I use my home computer for.
Anyway, how do I get Yosemite to work for me instead of locking up with the rolling beachball?
Thank you for any help you can give me.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A GPU restart report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".gpuRestart". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • K7D Master-L MS-6501 computer locks up when transferring data to external HD

I'm not 100% sure the problem is with the motherboard, but I think I've narrowed it down to the point that the MB could be the problem, and so I figured it was worth a shot to see if anyone else had heard of this problem or perhaps had any suggestions as to what it could be...anyway...
Here's the problem: whenever I try to transfer large data files onto my LaCie 250GB external HD, my computer locks up completely.  No CTRL+ALT+DEL.  No Pass Go (and certainly no $200 :P).  The connection interface is USB 2.0, to which I use the USB 2.0 controller card that came with my MB.  When I connected the HD to my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5150, I think), it transferred the files flawlessly.  Also, when I connected the drive to my roommate's desktop (another homemade system, though much beefier), it also read from/wrote to the HD without a hitch.  I even tried connecting the HD to my laptop, and (since my desktop & laptop are on the same network) mapped the HD onto my desktop as a network drive.  Then I transferred 24GB+ of data w/o any lock ups or problems whatsoever.  However, when I reconnected the HD back to my desktop and tried transferring a little over 500MB worth of files, it locked up after getting about 75% through.  I even tried disconnecting all of USB devices but the HD (and my mouse) and it still locked up after getting so far w/ the transfer.
The issue doesn't seem to be a data-throughput issue, b/c it transferred just fine when the HD was mapped as a network drive, and the drive works flawlessly on other computers, so I don't think the problem is in the drive itself (or the cable).  The only time there is an issue is when the HD is connected to my desktop via any USB port (I've tried both the on-board ports as well as the controller card ports).  Have any of you guys (or gals) ever heard of such an issue?  I hesitate to say it's the ports themselves b/c I've got about 8+ USB devices connected to my computer at any given time, and none of them have any issues communicating back and forth (nor have they ever locked up my machine like it's doing now).  A couple of friends have suggested that it might be a driver or BIOS issue, but I can't seem to find any USB driver updates for my MB model (I have only the ones on the disc that came w/ my MB) and the MSI website warns not to flash the BIOS if everything is running ok with your computer (which it is, minus this issue).  My BIOS version is 1.6 (probably should've put that w/ my signature :P)
I hope this is enough info to go on.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your time!

To my knowledge, both of the other systems it was tested on had SP1 installed (I know that's the case on my laptop).
I dunno if it would make a difference, but my laptop has WinXP Home, whereas my desktop has Pro installed.

  • Computer Locking Up at Random Issue

I am having an issue with the computer locking up when the side panel is in place and I am doing windows updates where its constantly processing and lots of hard drive activity. I am kind of thinking that its something to do with possibly the processor overheating but I am not for sure and would like to ask for advice here from others who have more experience with that this might be able to point me in the right direction.
I have an MS 6590 Ver 1 main board, with an AMD Athlon 2500+ processor. The hard drive is brand spankin new just bought it today April 2nd (WD 160GB). I have a dual fan power supply (Antec 350 watt) and a fan in the front, a fan in the rear, and one on the processor.
I have removed the side panel and am going to leave it off for a while to see if that stops the lock ups, if so then i guess i can assume that overheating is what is causing this, and then i just need to find out what is overheating.
What can I do to try and trouble shoot whats causing the lockups? Anyone have any further advice?
    Thanks
    Doug

  • My computer locked-up, and when rebooted, my itunes library was gone, replaced with a brand new library.  Fortunately, my 450 GB iTunes library is still on the computer.  Question is how do restore my original library without having to reload folders? Tks

Help!  My computer locked-up and had to be rebooted.  However, when I restarted it and hooked up my iPod, I noticed my existing iTunes library (all 450 GB of it) was GONE and was replaced by a brand new library.  Fortunately my old, 450 GB library is still on my hard drive under iTunes in Windows Explorer.  How or why could this have happened, and most importantly how can I restore my old libary without having to manually import allow of my music and hundreds of Podcasts and 16000+ podcast files?
    Thanks for any help....

What you're describing is the expected behaviour.  I believe though that is also is the easiest way to have all the contents available to both of you at all times.  If you have a spacious hard drive you should probably allow this to happen as anything else will be harder to manage.
My suggestion would be the following if you want to try something different.
Store all your music at a location that is accessible by both of you — an example would be to use your Public Folder as the locations where iTunes will go and look for all the media files—.  Your wife does have access to it.
In the Finder you will need to move the folder name iTunes Music to the location in your Public Folder (see above).  Once that's done, you and your wife will have to go into the iTunes Preferences > Advance Preferences and un-check Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.  From this point on, you can continue to use iTunes as usual.  You'll need to tell your wife what has been newly downloaded/imported into your iTunes so she can manually go look for those items in that Public Folder iTunes of yours and import them into her iTunes.  She will not duplicate by doing that, but, like I say this is an all-manual work.
She can do the same, so you have access to contents she imported herself.  One more downside of this is that both usernames have to be active in your iMac.  If yours isn't, she won't be able to access any item (song, book, app) located in your Public Folder's iTunes.
I'm sure there's a way, if you have an router with external hard drive conectivity, for both of you to be able to access —independently— the iTunes Media at all times but I was just reading at another post that doing so can further complicate things.
Hope this helps.  Please let me know what you think or decide to do.

  • Time Machine stops due to computer going into Sleep/Hibernation Mode

Time Machine stops due to computer going into Sleep/Hibernation Mode then restarts to try to start the Back up process again and again vicious cycle. I have made sure all settings are turned off. I have done one or two backups since the initial first backup. My HDD is almost full and I want it backed up before I try to clone/mirror the drive to upgrade it to a 1TB HDD. Thank you in advance.

Set the Energy Saver (in System Preferences) to Never. Then reset the NVRAM, as follows:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
    Release the keys.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

i hooked up my iphone 5 c to my computer to download my photos onto my computer and instead it downloaded all pictures on my computer to my phone and ipad in the photo gallery and now I cannot delete them. please help

Sounds like you synced the photos instead of importing the photos.
In iTunes with your device plugged in, go to the photos tab and uncheck the photos that were synced over, then sync again. This should take the photos from your coputer off the devices leaving just the camera roll.
If you have a Windows computer, go to mycomputer and right click on your device and select import pictures and video. If its a Mac computer, plug in your device and go to iphoto and select import all.

  • Printing a PDF & computer locks up

When I print a word doc use "Adobe PDF" as my printer, my computer locks up. I have to use ctrl alt del, open task manager & close Word. Before a Windows update, I could print to an Adobe PDF & the file would be saved to the folder of my choice. Are there any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

    Workaround:
Since you have the ability to "print to PDF" I can only assume that you're using Acrobat and NOT Reader to do so, because Reader doesn't have that capability.
Save the doc file with Word, and open Acrobat. Click File>Create>PDF from file and select the doc to create it from.
That's a pain, I know, but it beats a locked up PC.

  • Computer locks up -have to do hard shut down- after about two times its ok

Seems like the computer locks up on battery or AC. When I shut down with the power button two or three times things seem to work ok for a while. I bought this about two weeks ago and the seller stated that g4's have a problem with processor location that can make computer act up. could this be the problem.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
When you say the computer locks up, do you mean it freezes and you have to force shut it down? This is not considered normal behavior. It could indicate logic board problems. What the seller told you sounds like BS to me. You might want to consider returning this one and looking for a different one. Even if the problem is intermittent now, it likely will get worse over time. And could be expensive to fix.
    Good luck!

  • Can't update from 10.0.0 to 10.2.8 as screen freezes and computer locks up

Can't update to 10.2.8 as screen freezes and computer locks up when using Pref/view/update/10.2.8 100 meg combo update. I have to wipe disk and reinstall 10.2.0
I can't find a stand alone combo that works with 10.2.0 - indeed I can not find any update for 10.2.0. I do find discussions of the 10.2.1 and 10.2.2 updates, and once one has 10.2.2 there is a combo to get to 10.2.8.
What is the solution - by the way I like 10.2.0 better than prior 9.2.2, and do not mind having to wipe disk and lose 9.2.2. But my wavelan 16 bit wireless PCMIA card, indeed any airport card, no longer is recognized. Indeed I can't find Airport. This is a 10 year old computer and files/docs etc are long gone (but life was good until I decided to move to X this month). How do I correct this lack of wireless (it does connect directly to my Ethernet line so getting on the web is no problem)?

Hello papau. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You could try the 10.2.6 combo as that will install on 10.2
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=70174
and then 10.2.8 which requires 10.2.6 can be downloaded here.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate_.html
Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility, found in Applications/Utilities/ before you start and once again when you finish.
During the installation process, just wait till the system completes things and not use any other applications until the update is finished.
