Gnome desktop crashes (wacom-plugin-CRITICAL)!

Hello folks!
I'm using E17 as my default desktop. For some time I noticed that my font settings
for gnome applications are not effective any more. I had the suspicion that maybe something
is wrong with gnome-settings-daemon and tried to check  it by starting Gnome Desktop.
It crashed with the following error messages:
(gnome-settings-daemon:2564): wacom-plugin-CRITICAL **: gsd_wacom_device_get_device_type: assertion `GSD_IS_WACOM_DEVICE (device)' failed
gnome-session[2542]: CRITICAL: gsm_manager_set_phase: assertion `GSM_IS_MANAGER (manager)' failed
gnome-session[2542]: Gtk-CRITICAL: gtk_main_quit: assertion `main_loops != NULL' failed
xinit: connection to X server lost
Any idea how  this problem can be fixed?
Regards
Nik

  • Gnome 3 crashes

Hey everyone! I have been using ArchLinux as my main OS for about 1 month. I've never bothered installing any GUI though.
Last week, I installed Gnome 3. Everything seemed to go pretty well. After a few days, Gnome 3 started crashing randomly (It shows the terminal boot for half a second and then it brings me back to the GDM.). When I log back in, it's as if it was a normal boot (All the applications are gone and I need to restart them.)
I have searched through the wiki and on Google and have found nothing that could explain any possible fix.

This is the log from my X session. I'm not sure if anything is of any interest except the last 5 lines maybe.

It seems like it only crashes when I am using Firefox.
I started the gdm from the console but now, I'm starting to wonder if Gnome really crashes since when it seems to crash, it doesn't bring me back to the console. I'm not sure how to stop Gnome when it's running so I couldn't see if there were any error messages on the console.
The following commands did not work:
    /etc/init.d/gdm stop
    /etc/init.d/xdm stop

  • [NEW RELEASE] Arista - Easy to use transcoder for the GNOME Desktop

I have created packages (regular and nightly releases) in the AUR for a new program called Arista.
    http://programmer-art.org/projects/arista-transcoder
An easy to use multimedia transcoder for the GNOME Desktop. Arista focuses on being easy to use by making the complex task of encoding for various devices simple. Pick your input, pick your target device, choose a file to save to and go.
Arista has been in development since early 2008 as a side project and was just recently polished to make it release-worthy. The 0.8 release is the first public release and includes a to-do of items that will be completed for the 1.0 final release.
    Features
        * Presets for iPod, computer, DVD player, PSP, and more
        * Live preview to see encoded quality
        * Automatically discover available DVD drives and media
        * Rip straight from DVD media easily (requires libdvdcss)
        * Simple terminal client for scripting
    Requirements
Arista is written in Python and requires the bindings for GTK+ 2.16 or newer, GStreamer, GConf, GObject, Cairo, and DBus. If you are an Ubuntu user this means you need to be using at least Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty). The GStreamer plugins required depend on the presets available, but at this time you should have gst-plugins-good, gst-plugins-bad, gst-plugins-ugly, and gst-ffmpeg. If you are on Ubuntu don't forget to install the multiverse packages.
    Development
All development will happen on Launchpad, which provides bug tracking, distributed version control, milestone / roadmap planning and tracking, a forum and translation utilities.
EDIT: I guess I should add AUR links =-)

    Bazaar (nightly) release: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25876

I'd say yes, since it is optional (only if you want to transcode from DVD)
"Yes" is a strange answer to an "Or" question

  • Gnome Shell crashes while filtering

Gnome Shell crashes as soon as I start typing letters in the activities window (opened with super-key or upper left corner). Sometimes it's just a flicker just like reloading the shell with ALT+F2 + "r". But Sometimes it crashes and the "broken-gnome-shell-plugin-screen" appears and I have to logout.
I do have some extensions installed (via the website), but even if I deactivate all of them the filtering is still broken.

Take a look at this thread - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=135826&p=1
You basically have to do a:
    $ echo "" > ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
    and then as root
    # chattr +i ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
Edit: I like this temporary solution because it also gets rid of the annoying (and sometimes embarrassing) "Recent Items" feature.

  • Need help debugging desktop crashes

    Hi all,
I've started having trouble with random desktop crashes. It only happens occasionally (twice in the past couple of weeks), but my screens black out (no signal). The desktop is still powered on, but I can't ssh to it. I'm pretty sure I wasn't doing anything specific either time to cause the crash.
Unfortunately, I don't have much more information (sorry!). I've been told on the IRC to look at dmesg, the output of which I've pasted below, but I can't really make head nor tail of it.
Ask me and I'll post any other logs/command output that might help.

Is this the log of a failed boot or of a successful one? If it is a successful one, please provide the log of a failed boot. This log seems to say that there are 3 displays detected, so I think this is a normal boot.
What I would like to see is if the failed boot starts X or not. That is, assuming you use X. When the boot fails, do you see messages on your screen before it goes black?

  • Mountain Lion Desktop crash? Randomly it returns me to the login screen and I have restart all my apps

So after install of Mountain Lion (never happened before) my desktop crashes and it returns me to the login screen.  After I login I have to restart all my apps.
One morning this happened 5+ times in under an hour.  So my productivity has gone down :-(
I work around this by only running three apps (finder, terminal & firefox), and then it sees to only happen 2-3 times a day...sigh.
The only other odd thing and have no idea if it is related is that firefox was showing some animated image from the olympics and when I had it on one screen it was fine, when I had the window on the other screen, the image was not the right image, it looked like it had reached into the screen buffer of other applications and was displaying that (e.g. where there was a scrolling flame for the right image, there was some scrolling upside down text from my terminal when I had it on the other screen where the flame was supposed to be).
An help on how to debug/solve would be helpful.

You're welcome. If you use Zoom often try the new show controller feature. It's below where you turned zoom off. Once you turn it on you can use it to turn Zoom on and off. Plus you can use zoom as a magnifying glass instead of full screen.

    Hi,
I would like to know the certain name of the application you updated.
It seems that the updating of the application make the explorer.exe crash or no responding.
I suggest you press ctrl+alt+del, and click Task manager.
Then end the process explorer.exe, and click File -> Run New task -> type in explorer.exe.
    See what's going on.

  • My desktop crashed and I had to reinstall itunes how do I transfer all the apps and their information, music, and contacts from my iphone to the itunes software?

My desktop crashed and I had to reinstall itunes software.  My iphone has all my apps with their data, contacts, photos, videos & music.  How can I import all of the information and data on my iphone into itunes?  I downloaded one app that is a to-do-list but it indicates that if I sync with my iphone I will lose all data on my iphone and it will be replaced with the data on itunes.  I do not want to lose my data!  I have a lot of information and I cannot understand why Apple would not have a way to restore my data from my iphone to my itunes.  PLEASE HELP!

It should be like the very first time you synced your phone with I-Tunes. It will notice you haven't synced before and just copy everything from your phone into I-Tunes. It shouldn't delete anything from the phone, at least it never has for me. It just puts a copy of everything into I-Tunes and even if you delete an app for example from your phone and you decide you want it back later, you can just go back into I-Tunes and copy it back over. Hope this helps.

  • [SOLVED] Flash in Chromium causes Gnome to crash

I thought this might help someone else who has the same problem. I found in the last week or so that most times when I opened a website with Flash in Chromium Gnome 3 crashed and logged me out. I found a solution for it so thought I'd post it here fro anyone else stuck with the same issue.
Open Firefox (or Opera, and I suppose pretty much any browser will work the same) and go to a website that uses Flash. I went to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 … et_Spring/ and right click on the flash content / movie whatever you want to call it. A menu pops up, select "Settings" and untick "Enable hardware acceleration". Go back to Chromium and try some Flash content and it should work fine.
    Hope this helps someone else.

  • GNOME Desktop Too Bare!

I love Arch and I love GNOME.  The problem is - the default GNOME desktop that comes with Arch is EXTREMELY BARE!  Even after I change the wallpaper and add some new icons.  It just feels so empty.  Do you guys have any suggestions on how I can fix things up?

    Wallpapers:
(install downloadthemall firefox extension. open all pics in new tabs, when you're done the click address bar, then downloadthemall from menu. this way you get them all in one click)
    http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/wallpaper/
    GTK engine + gtkrc:
    (from repos, searc with pacman)
    murrine, rezlooks
Icons and window borders (aka "metacity themes"):
(install by dragging tar.gz packs to theme preferences window, save your favourites to disk until next installation)
    www.gnome-look.org (sort by highest rating)
    Cursor themes:
(from repos, searc with pacman. These are the default cursors in ubuntu btw.)
    xcursor-vanilla-dmz, xcursor-vanilla-dmz-aa
Conky is fun too, if you're into that sort of thing. It can be a bit tricky to use alongside a gnome/kde "root window" (desktop) though...
I myself installed xcompmgr and avant-window-navigator a while ago. fun stuff. pretty too.
You could also design your own panels backgrounds with "the gimp". curved or "glossy" panels is fun to experiment with

  • [Solved] KDE desktop crashed when i close the flash music player

My desktop is kde  4.7.3-1, and the kernel is linux-3.1.4-1.
Just as the Title, those days everytime when I close the flash music player"http://player.mbox.sogou.com/player" in firefox, my desktop crashed, and my desktop panel disapeared for a while. Several seconds later the desktop recovered. I have no idea what caused the problem. Does anyone have the same problem? Or who have idea what have to do with it?
Any idea is helpful! Thank you in advance!

Just out of interest, why the old KDE?
You may get more info if you start firefox from the command line and reproduce the crash.

  • Automatic Time Sync on Gnome Desktop?

What would you do to sync time on your Gnome Desktop?
Gnome Settings for "Networktime" does not work for me caus it is deactivated after reboot....
All what i try to do with ntp does not work too...
Is there any "easy" way to sync time?

I am quoting from another thread:
wonder wrote:gnome-settings-daemon until gnome 3.4 used rc.conf to read and save the timezone in gnome-control-center.
now this functionality was dropped in favor of using systemd date dbus api.
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=140862
So network time will not work if you have  sysvinit and gnome.

  • HDD icons not appearing on my Gnome desktop when mounted [SOLVED]

I have several ntfs partitons that I'd like to see as icons on my Gnome desktop.  When I ran Debian/Lenny, I would mount them like so:
    $ sudo mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda2 /mnt/D
After that command ran, a new icon (HDD) would appear on my Gnome desktop.  I didn't mess with fuseblock at all.  I'd like to get this behavior with Arch but don't understand what I need to do.
    Thanks!
EDIT: foutrelis solved this, see his post below.

It looks like if the mount point is under /media it will show up on the desktop. This is not the case with /mnt.
You're the man, foutrelis!  That did it!  I can't explain why it worked mounted to /mnt/D under Debian but /media/D works for me!  Thank you for the reply!
Now if you can tell me how I can edit the list of partitions that Gnome gives users, you'll be batting 1000.  Basically, I don't want every single partition to appear in the list.
