  • Gnome 3 crashes on startup [Solved]

    Hello,
    I just rebooted my laptop after a few weeks for the first time. I installed
    numerous updates during that time.
    When gdm loads it crashes and I get the "We encountered an error" picture
    with the sad computer smily. I tired booting into runlevel 3 and used startx but I
    ended up with the same problem. Disabeling both Gnome Shell Extersions
    didn't work.
    Where exactly is the log for Gnome-Shell and all that so that I can post it here?
    I quickly installed basic xfce4 which works fine so the graphics driver which
    was updated seems to work ok.
    Regards,

  • Firefox 34 crashes on startup (in safe mode too)

    Ubuntu 14.10, "Mozilla Firefox 34.0". It has started crashing on it's own without any new tabs or sites being opened. It doesn't even run in "safe-mode".
    When I run FF, it shows the main window and if try to restore my tabs, it crashes. Even without restoring, if I click on the "Open menu" icon (top right corner), it still crashes. Not sure if it's a Gtk issue. I tried downgrading to FF 33 and that was crashing even without showing the main window.

  • Final Cut crashing on startup - Please Help

    I've never had an issue with my Final Cut before until today and have to urgently create a dvd in DVD Studio Pro but it keeps on crashing on startup. It does the identical crash to Final Cut as well.

    Now onto my dilemma, I've checked /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProKit.framework and I deff don't have that folder (ProKit.framework)
    I read this http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/solvingmissing_framework_errors_in_final_cutstudio.html but I don't have my Final Cut Studio disc here or have Final cut on another machine.
    I downloaded ProKitUpdate4.5.dmg from Apple support but when I try install it - it says "Alert - Your machine doesn't need this update"
    Please Please any help would be extremely helpful, I'm really stuck and don't really know what to do.

    When I go to start, Logic crashes and reports that it's a DIGIDESIGN CORE AUDIO problem.
    I wonder if you have this file on your machine:
    Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/Digidesign CoreAudio.plugin
    If you move it to the desktop, does Logic still crash?

  • Panel does not start automatically in Gnome 2.24.3

    Since Gnome 2.24.3, the Gnome Panel does not start automatically.
    I had to manualy add it to the startup group via "Sessions" in order to force it to start when login finishes.
    Does anybody has the same behavior?
    Should I report it as a bug?

    That may be true but it is a real pain since when it happens the only way to recover is to terminate all of the iTunes modules with task manager and start it manually. It also leaves the IPOD in a state that says do not disconnect. You can disconnect since nothing is really happening but there is no excuse for this not to start much faster. When you have multiple users it is a real pain. It ought to be able to either end when finished or better yet allow multiple users simultaneously updating from different libraries.
    I guess i will just have to get in the habit of treating it as a single user and start and stop it every time I need it and be suer not to let it run. Not nice because that means waiting for larger Podcast downloads instead of having there ready for me when I sign on my computer.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome crashes at startup

    I have been using MATE for a while, but wanted to check out if the new (3.12) gnome became usable.
    Sadly, just after login gnome crashes: "something went wrong" message and a sad "face" is displayed. But absolutely no debug information is shown.
    I have looked into ~/.xsession-errors but it is empty.
    There is also nothing interesting in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    I have removed gnome-shell-extensions and user extensions, and then even created a "fresh" user.  But none of these helped.

    I guess it is not dbus or bluez issue. Seems more like gtk2/gtk3 issue (I have both installed), so I tried to run gdm instead of lxdm (just in case lxdm loads gtk2), but gdm shows just a black screen.
    #### UPDATE:
    The Error: Requiring NMGtk, version none: Requiring namespace 'Gtk' version '2.0', but '3.0' is already loaded
    was from NetworkManager (I just guessed what NMGtk could mean)
    I had NetworkManager installed and NetworkManager-applet. But the latter was a gtk2 version (from AUR) and Gnome apparently tried to execute it instead of just ignoring it.

    I found out that this error occurs only under Gnome (for me). I can start anjuta in fluxbox. So I made a bug report.
    It seems that anjuta 2.0 will come out soon. A beta version should be released in the next few days (according to this: http://www.anjuta.org/wiki/index.php/Anjuta2).

  • Gnome screensaver crashes on gnome startup

    Hi,
    As soon as gnome starts up Gnome Screensaver crashes.  Gnome is versions 2.20.3.
    Any ideas?

    Fixed by adding dbus to my DAEMONS.
    I thought that Gnome automatically started dbus.

  • Gnome 3 crashes

    Hey everyone! I have been using ArchLinux as my main OS for about 1 month. I've never bothered installing any GUI though.
    Last week, I installed Gnome 3. Everything seemed to go pretty well. After a few days, Gnome 3 started crashing randomly (It shows the terminal boot for half a second and then it brings me back to the GDM.). When I log back in, it's as if it was a normal boot (All the applications are gone and I need to restart them.)
    I have searched through the wiki and on Google and have found nothing that could explain any possible fix.

    This is the log from my X session. I'm not sure if anything is of any interest except the last 5 lines maybe.

    It seems like it only crashes when I am using Firefox.
    I started the gdm from the console but now, I'm starting to wonder if Gnome really crashes since when it seems to crash, it doesn't bring me back to the console. I'm not sure how to stop Gnome when it's running so I couldn't see if there were any error messages on the console.
    The following commands did not work:
    /etc/init.d/gdm stop
    /etc/init.d/xdm stop

  • [SOLVED] Flash in Chromium causes Gnome to crash

    I thought this might help someone else who has the same problem. I found in the last week or so that most times when I opened a website with Flash in Chromium Gnome 3 crashed and logged me out. I found a solution for it so thought I'd post it here fro anyone else stuck with the same issue.
    Open Firefox (or Opera, and I suppose pretty much any browser will work the same) and go to a website that uses Flash. I went to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 … et_Spring/ and right click on the flash content / movie whatever you want to call it. A menu pops up, select "Settings" and untick "Enable hardware acceleration". Go back to Chromium and try some Flash content and it should work fine.
    Hope this helps someone else.

    I had full freezes always at the end of a youtube video. Seems to have helped that.  Thanks.

    Gnome Shell crashes as soon as I start typing letters in the activities window (opened with super-key or upper left corner). Sometimes it's just a flicker just like reloading the shell with ALT+F2 + "r". But Sometimes it crashes and the "broken-gnome-shell-plugin-screen" appears and I have to logout.
    I do have some extensions installed (via the website), but even if I deactivate all of them the filtering is still broken.

    Take a look at this thread - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=135826&p=1
    You basically have to do a:
    $ echo "" > ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
    and then as root
    # chattr +i ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
    Edit: I like this temporary solution because it also gets rid of the annoying (and sometimes embarrassing) "Recent Items" feature.

  • Beagle dependencies : gnome, evolution, etc. = mandatory ?

    hi there,
    installig beagle was one of my plans, till i realized how many things would be installed as dependencies : gnome, evolution and so one.
    i don't care having some basic gnome stuff, but i don't want my kde system to be polluted by useless gnome stuff. i don't intend to start a troll, so if you're pro-gnome, please forgive me.
    nevertheless, when i look at beagle's software requirement i don't see so many dependencies. is there any way not to install gnome, evolution, etc. ?
    thanks for any help.!

    Ok, so I ended up making a pkgbuild (based on the one in aur) for the devel version of kerry, I did a pacman -Rcs beagle before making it so i hope the dependancies are correct, try it out if you wish
    pkgname=kerry-devel
    pkgver=0.1.90
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="A desktop search tool integrated with Beagle and KDE."
    url="http://en.opensuse.org/Kerry"
    license="GPL"
    depends=('kdebase' 'libbeagle')
    makedepends=()
    source=(http://developer.kde.org/~binner/kerry/kerry-0.1.90.tar.bz2)
    md5sums=('02b0d26c001d56f187d84379f93303e8')
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/kerry-$pkgver
    ./configure --prefix=/opt/kde
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install

  • [solved] Minor issues (gnome-shell crash and keyboard backlight)

    Hi,
    I have two very small questions that are probably quite stupid but I just don't know what to enter into google to resolve these issues. I hope you forgive me if I just list those and hope that you can give me some pointers.
    1. When I close the lid on my Dell XPS 13 and open it again gnome-shell crashes. When I press the power button my laptop goes into some kind of sleep state as well but without crashing gnome-shell in the process. So the question is: how can I make the former action behave like the latter?
    2. I'd like to disable the keyboard backlight. Where would I do that?
    Any hints, pointers or quick solutions would be appreciated.

    1. You can change what happens after you close the lid using a menu in the 'gnome-tweak-tool'.
        pacman -Syu gnome-tweak-tool
    Find out what kind of sleep state is causing the problem by calling the commands from a terminal.
    Read this wiki-page to find the commands.
    Also read the troubleshooting part of the page.
    2. It is possible to get information about the state of your devices in the '/sys/devices/' virtual filesystem.
        For example the light on my thinkpad can be read from '/sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/leds/tpacpi::thinklight'
        Try to find something similar for the keyboard backlight and find out where to write for changing it.
        Sorry, no quick solution here ;-)
