Gnome forgets settings

After reinstalling Arch on my laptop with gnome, things have started to seem a little strange.
In some programs(including gnome-terminal) some settings are forgotten each time I reboot. Examples of this behaviour are:
-Rhythmbox. Each time I reboot and open the program anew, it starts up as a small window, having forgotten my size settings as well as my plugin settings.
-Gnome-terminal. Again with the size settings getting reset.
-Gnome-panel applets. Some applets I add won't stay on the panel through a reboot. Though some do(system monitor does not).
Any solutions out there?
UPDATE: I should mention that /home is its own partition, and that Arch has been reinstalled once to /. I have also tried resetting all gconf settings.

Have you tried a fresh /home/<youruser> folder?

I installed the catalyst-driver yesterday on my HTPC and in the gnome systems settings i see "Graphics: VESA: WRESTLER", so it seems to be normal.

  • Gnome system settings, wrong graphics driver?

    Hello,
I recently saw in the gnome system settings that in the "Overview" section, it shows: "Graphics   VESA: RV630"  though I know I have installed properly the catalyst for my ATI Radeon 2600, and the xf86-video-vesa is not installed.
(In the Graphics section it sais the same and:
    "Experience   Standard
    Forced Fallback mode OFF")
Even though it does not bother me, I was wondering if it is really a problem. Also I have noted some visual lag every now and then, although that might not be the reason.
Is this "normal"? Should I ignore it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cheers!

  • Gnome reverting settings randomly.

I having this weird problem. It seems that Gnome reverts to standard settings randomly. It does this randomly when I login, touch a program, etc. Sometimes it can go for hours w/o switching settings. I think its a problem with the gnome-settings-daemon crashing or not starting up.

Same problem here. gnome-settings-daemon does not start up, so I have to manually launch it every time this happens (by right-mouse -> change desktop background).
edit: my gnome starts first with openbox, then switches to compiz... Sometimes it pops an error saying things like some stuff is occupied by another process so gnome-settings-daemon can't (sorry didn't really pay attention to whats in there.. ) Not sure if this is related though

  • Exposé forgetting settings on MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro keeps forgetting my settings for expose (the default settings, F11 -> desktop F12 -> dashboard). I'll set them and after a while, I'll go back to the system preferences and it will show nothing set for the expose keys. I'm guessing this is a bad plist issue. Any suggestions for which file to hose?

These settings appear to be stored in the com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist preference file, which is in the Library/Preferences/ folder of your home folder.

  • Gnome font settings not remembered

I'm trying to change the font dpi from the right click menu on desktop, but after i log out and log back in the dpi setting is falling back to 92dpi( I'm trying to set it to 96), but other settings like hinting, subpixel rendering is not affected. I cant figure this out, are there any conf files that I can edit manually?

What window manager - Gnome, KDE. XFCE, Openbox, etc.?
DPI can be set in xorg.conf, and AFAIK it's the only place where it can be set as *two* values (horizontal and vertical), which is desirable for widescreen displays.

  • Mac OS X Leopard Server (PPC) "forgets" settings if Server Admin is left on

I'm not sure that I'm posting this question in the right place.
I have a QuickSilver 2001 Power Macintosh G4 (867MHz, 2x120GB PATA hard drives, 1.5GB RAM) running a fully up-to-date copy of Mac OS X Server 10.5.2. The hardware appears to be in good shape. The disks are new and I'm very certain the RAM is good. Apple Hardware Diagnostics finds no problem with the computer itself.
Normally, this system is very reliable. It works as a primary domain controller for Windows PCs. However, if by some chance I forget to close the Server Admin application, and the machine sits for a while without use, Server Admin will claim that "no services are configured" when I return. I also saw this problem on the 10.5 and 10.5.1 releases.
The services really do appear to stop working when this happens. I have Open Directory, DNS, DHCP and SMB configured. All four will stop responding.
Rebooting the computer usually gets the services going again, and Server Admin will then function properly. However, I always have to reconfigure SMB to be a primary domain controller.
Any ideas? Since this is just a test system, I did try wiping the disks and doing a reinstallation. The problem persisted.
I think this may be PowerPC specific, as I have an Intel Mac mini set up much the same way (Mac OS X 10.5.2 server, 4GB RAM, 320GB hard disk) and it does not appear to suffer from this issue.

Yes, I just discovered this problem on my own machine.
I just wanted to check some settings and discovered that the behaviour of the GUI of Server Admin was somewhat "erratic": First this "no services are configured" message. Some of the configured servers were marked with the usual green "up and running" bullet, others dark grey - those were normally configured and running and clicking the appropriate line seemed to force Server Admin to check the actual state and then turned also green. But sometimes configuration pages were "greyed out", or while switching through the tabs Server Admin claimed that where were "unsaved changes" which should be saved (or discarded).
And then SMB: this was light grey, as usual when a service is not running and clicking on it I browsed through the configuration tabs - everything seemed ok (all my settings were correctly shown, configured as PDC with right domain name etc.) - and I started the service. Then suddenly the configuration settings changed to the default settings - no more PDC, but a "standalone server" with workgroup name "WORKGROUP"...
Looks for me, as if Server Admin lost it's "source" file for the configuration (the file in /var/db/smb.conf says, that it is automatically generated -- does somebody were the source file is stored?)...

  • Gnome user settings?

This must be insanely simple and I am just having horrible luck.
In other distros when I install gnome, I generally get a user administration panel under System -> Administration. Arch didn't supply one, so I grabbed gnome-system-tools and there it appeared. But I can't access it with my normal user ("You are not allowed to access system configuration"), and can't login to GDM using root. I'm not sure what group I need to add myself to do gain access (which is why I wanted the GUI anyhow...).
EDIT: Tried to get into gnome as root, still couldn't access the user settings.

Here is a similar discussion. They haven't found a solution either though...
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=324483
    EDIT
It's strange though. I remember using these tools every now and then and they worked fine. I removed them at some point because I didn't really need them. In the course of this thread I re-installed them to see what's going on and now I have the same problem .

  • [SOLVED] Cannot change Gnome 3 settings

I have been running KDE and decided to try Gnome 3 simply for a different experience. I installed the entire gnome and gnome-extra groups and for the most part, things seem to be working well. One ugly issue, though, is that I am unable to change any settings from 'System Settings'. For example, when I try to change the background, I get the dialog that lets me select a new wallpaper, picture, etc..., but when I choose a wallpaper, it takes me back to the background settings dialog and nothing changes. If I go to 'Date and Time' settings and try to change to 'AM/PM' time format, the radio button is selected and the clock blinks to the new format and a half second later the radio button and clock go back to '24-hour'. If I go to 'Brightness  and Lock' and try to turn off 'Lock', the toggle changes to off for a half second and then changes back. I have searched these forums and google and checked various log files with no luck. Has anyone here experienced this or have any advice for how I go about tracking down the source of the problem?
    EDIT:
Of course I find the answer shortly after I post this message.

  • [Solved] No Sound Output Listed in Gnome Sound Settings

    Hi,
Just recently installed Arch and installed Gnome-Shell.  I have no sound at all and there is no devices listed in the output tab of the sound settings in Gnome Settings.
I can change volume but of course there is no sound.
Any help on how to diagnose and fix this would be appreciated.

I have added this to ~/.asoundrc:
    pcm.dsp {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix"
but to no avail.  I have also installed paprefs and my sound card isn't listed, only the HDMI output which I don't use.  I also tried this:
Using paprefs, simply select "Add virtual output device for simultaneous output on all local sound cards" from under the "Simultaneous Output" tab. Then, under GNOME's "sound settings", select the simultaneous output you have just created.
    Nothing.
I also tried the verbose option too with the same result.
    EDIT:
    This is the output of for i in $(awk '{print $2}' /proc/asound/modules | sort | uniq); do echo "--- $i ---"; systool -vm $i; done

  • Music Manager forgets settings

    Hi!
I have a problem with the Music Manager 2.0 with Nokia Suite 6.84.10.4 on Win XP Pro. My phone ist the Nokia 7390.
Whenever I change the settings (for example change the path where to save the music on the phone or just uncheck one of the checkboxes on the first page) it will forget the settings right after clicking ok. When I click ok and open the settings again, everything is back at default.
I tried to set all files in the PC Suite directory to "no write protection", but it doesn't work.
PC Suite doesn't save some settings, too. For example when it shows the hint when I close it (You can start it again .... and so on), I check "Do not show anymore" but it will show the hint everytime again.
    Can you help me please?
It could be that some messages and so on are written wrong, because I use the german version of PC Suite and tried to translate it
    Greetings

    Nokia 7390, black-bronze

i also have experienced issues with my music manager.  i loaded up some music and have around 12gb of memory left.    Everytime i play 1 song it works and when i go to select another my whole phone freezes.  I have installed the latest updates for my phone and cant see what else i can do.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so do you have any suggestions?

  • Gnome default settings screwed?

This morning I started up gnome to find that a bunch of settings had become 'un-set'. The gnome menu had no icons in, and the mouse preferences double-click speed won't change properly. Also, the double-click test image doesn't work. Also some of my epiphany settings disappeared.
I guess something to do with gconf got fudged, probably involving the xml and xslt packages that appeared yesterday (I don't think I had restarted X since installing those until today).
I have since tried creating a new user and starting gnome, expecting the useable default settings, but instead the icons are unset, the panel is empty and in the top left of the screen and there is no desptop background. If anyone else is getting this, please say so.
PS: it is also possible that the new ghex package is the culprit. I installed that thismorning before I started x..

Leave GNOME, uninstall ghex and try:
for schema in /opt/gnome/etc/gconf/schemas/*.schemas ; do
    GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=`/opt/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source` /opt/gnome/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule "$schema"
    done
At first I also removed all directories and files in
    /opt/gnome/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults
    and
    /opt/gnome/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory
but i'm not sure if it is necessary.

  • GNOME - Screensaver settings don't obey, CPUFREQ wont work

Hello I installed Arch w/gnome on my laptop the other day and i'm having a few issues.  Firstly, the screensaver activates when the computer is idle for about 10 minutes.  I have changed every setting in gnome and i've even disabled the screensaver and it's still happening and i have to enter my password.  I've also disabled all of the "dim brightness" settings and my screen goes dim after about 5 minutes and slows things down.
Secondly, I've setup CPU scaling according to the wiki and i have the monitor applets working in the top panel.  I modified my rc.conf so that the default setup is "on demand".  I can select from ondemand or performance for each of my 2 processors.  The problem with that is that the applets do not "spike up" to green as they did on Ubuntu.  I can clearly see Compiz effects going very slow while this ondemand setting is used.  In ubuntu the monitors would spike up all the time whenever i did anything, but on arch i rarely see them go up at all no matter what i'm doing.  I tested Compiz animations with both processors on performance and everything is smooth.
My guess is that i need to configure a file for the ondemand setting.  Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm getting the same problem with the battery indicator: while discharging, the indicator doesn't update, but it does when it's charging. It only started happening after upgrading gnome-power-manager to 2.26.0-1.
My netbook's LED accurately reflects the battery state, as does /proc/acpi, so the GNOME applet or something it uses is probably the culprit.

  • CS3 Forgetting Settings

I'm using CS3 (fully updated) and just recently I'm finding that it seems to forget my settings I have made in Colour Settings and Preferences sections. It doesn't happen all the time - just once every few days or so.
Obviously this is quite irritating as you have to spend time setting everything up again. Anyone else had this problem and any advice on how to stop this from happening?

    >Once everything is how you like it I would save the whole folder
That's what I do. Only I take the parent directory, so I'll save some other user specific variables too (like actions etc.)
I do this approx. once a month, maintaining a set of 5, deleting the oldest.
For the O/P: this "forgetting" could happen if PS is not closed properly, like when the pc is shut down with PS still open.
