[Gnome - GDM] Locale/Charset Problem

Hi everybody,
I´m using Gnome with GDM as Display Manager.
I got a problem with my keyboard settings, but don´t know why
The first charset/locale option is set in the /boot/grub/menu.lst
kernel /vmlinuz26 lang=de locale=de_DE.UTF8 root=/dev.....
I use a LUKS encrypted /home partition and need a german locale/charset for the passphrase/during bootup.
The second charset option is in my /etc/rc.conf:
LOCALE="de_DE.UTF8"
KEYMAP="de"
With those settings I got an almost "normal" keyboard behaviour.
The Umlaut-Character for example arent´t working during bootup or in a tty. In a later started shell inside of Gnome everything works fine.
The second charset problem is during password input inside GDM. The layout isn´t working right here either.
I already tried the ./dmrc settings of Language and Keys, but nothing works.
Anyone got a clue how to fix that?

Maybe you can change the subject of this thread, as the issue is not only related to gdm, IMHO.
I don't get it either. Settings are LOCALE="sv_SE"  and KEYMAP="sv-latin1" in rc.conf and locale -a gives me
[root@localhost ~]# locale -a
C
POSIX
sv_SE
sv_SE.iso88591
swedish
But something is still wrong, because calling up some manpages gives me
Cannot open the message catalog "man" for locale "sv_SE"
(NLSPATH="<none>")
I ran locale-gen, but I'm pretty lost in this locale business too...

  • [SOLVED] GDM + Openbox Keyring problems

    Hi people.
Well, I am using two parallel WMs: Gnome 3 (gnome-shell) and OpenBox. As a login manager I use GDM (the one that came with Gnome 3).
When I login to Gnome 3 session, everything is OK. But when I switch to OpenBox session through GDM, keyring problems appear.
All applications that are needing login (passwords) are problematic. I tried Empathy and Tweetdeck and its very problematic. I am also using Tint2 as a panel in OpenBox and its problematic when I am trying to connect to a new closed wifi network. But when I login to my Gnome 3 session, everythings fine. I just have to login to wifi network for the first time and than relog to OpenBox and everythings working. This method is not working with Empathy and Tweetdeck.
So I am guessing that gnome-keyring is causing problems when I login to openbox.
    Any help?

    Solved!
    I just added
    gnome-keyring-daemon --start -c pkcs11 &
    to autostart.sh
    Its functioning properly now.

  • Gnome/GDM Issue - System freeze before starting Gnome every reboot.

Hi guys, sorry for my bad english.
    I've a strange problem with Gnome/GDM DE.
Yesterday, I have installed gnome on my laptop but it works 1 times every 2.
The first time i power on my laptop it works, the second (or if i try to reboot) it freezes before starting GDM.
I can't switch tty, can't shutdown. I can only power off pressing power button.
How can i solve this problem? Anyone had this issue before?
PS: (I've installed arch yet on the same laptop using XFCE without problems)

  • Cannot log-in through Gnome/gdm

I'm building my first Arch box, and it's been a learning experience. I've had trouble getting asla and X11 to work, but I figured it out with some searching, it was fun! Now I'm really stuck though, I can't login through the Gnome/gdm login screen. I've set it up so I go directly into the login screen, btw. I see my user name in the list of users, but when I type in my password it tells me its incorrect. I thought that maybe I typed in a wrong password, but I can go into console mode and login just fine. Any suggestions? I hate posting in forms, when ever possible, but I just don't know what else to do.
Edit: I was able to go into /etc/gdm/custom.conf, using ubuntu, and edit it to log me in automaticly, but I don't like the idea of leaving my computer open to any one around the house.
Edit: I'm trying to use root, through the terminal inside gnome, but the password does not work.

Nope, the language is good, US english. It seems to be a problem with X11, since I get the same results when trying to enter root from a terminal opened up in X11 only. Any other ideas?
    Edit: Found this page http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=209788
I'll be giving it a try when I get home.
Edit: Got home and read the page again. Figured out this is not what I am looking for, the post was about changing a password for root in the console with no GUI. It's sort of the opposite of what I'm looking for.

What does this warning message corresponds to?
How can i get rid of it?
    Regards,

you can safely ignore this error. Access Manager - which is deployed on top of web server 7 needs to fix their configuration and they chose to leave it at this point. you can write to their forum for how to fix it.

  • Get gnome&gdm running, in a minimal manner?

hi every one, i'm loving arch but i'm disapointed in myself
after wresteling! with my laptop all night+next morning and facing strange problems, which the last one was about failing allocating g object or something like that, and realizing that each problem was solved installing one of gnone packags, finally i installed everything `pacman -S gnome` and `pacman -S gnome-extra` offered,  gdm works now, but this is totally not arch way, i dont want the package game!!! to name one,
so on a fresh installation of arch, what is the minimum requirments to run Xorg+gdm+gnome3+gnome-shell?
    (minimum!)
    tanx for any answer given

    i get error running gnome-control-center
    *** glibc detected *** gnome-control-center: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00007f5a783c84d8 ***
< AND A LOT OF LINES HERE, Backtrace.....>
    so i do this:   MALLOC_CHECK=1; export MALLOC_CHECK
and i's fixed, but, i cant run 'Date and time setting' it simply wont run!, i dont know what the comand line for running it is, i figured out gnome settings's error by running in terminal
    3 questions:
1.how do you figure out what the error is, will it be loged somewhere?
2.what the command is for running "gnome"s Time setting (not setting directly in terminal)
3.what do you think the problem could be?

  • Gnome App "Covers" Screen Problem

I have recently noticed a problem with my Gnome installation. When I start up the machine and log in (I use GDM), If I don't touch the keyboard or mouse after entering my password, the screen will look as if a semi-transparent application starts and covers the entire screen. I run Compiz and have alpha-transparencies blurred. Through the blur I can see the clock in the panel still ticking off the seconds, etc. If I move the mouse, the screen returns to normal. If I wait until the screensaver starts, the screensaver acts normal, and moving the mouse after that results in normal operation as usual.
I have tried to find out what app (or setting) is responsible for this, but have no more ideas. I have tried:
    1) Running "top" as soon as I log in, but then (since I have touched the keyboard and/or mouse) the problem never occurs.
    2) I have checked for a "hidden" startup app or daemon and can't find anything. I checked both ~/.config/autostart and in the Gnome Startup Apps.
Does anyone have any other ideas about how to find out what app is doing this?
Here is a screenshot of what I see:

What if you run a little script that opens a terminal and runs top automatically at login?

  • New Gdm + New Openbox = Problems

just upgraded gnome stuff and openbox (to openbox 3.4.7.2-3).  (so, gdm is v. 2.28.0-1).
openbox starts, but there is only 1 virtual desktop (even though several are specified in config)
worse, screensaver does not start and screen will not lock in any case.
does anyone know how to get at these problems?
more minor issues:  gnome control center cannot set background -- have to use " eval `cat $HOME/.fehbg` & " in openbox autostart.sh file.
    thanks.

    Yeah, something like that...

  • XGL + KDE = groovy, XGL + Gnome = GDM won't start...

I've followed the instructions in the Arch wiki to the 'T', and also tried on a separate occasion  to follow the Gentoo wiki directions for getting GDM to work with XGL; neither has helped me. When I boot up, GDM tries to load (I get the watch-face cursor), but it doesn't load... it waits for a while, then flashes to a tty and back again, does this waiting & flashing twice more, then I get an 'Xserver failed to start' BSOD.
I can nest an XGL Xserver in a 'startx'd gnome instance no problem, and everything works great. Also, I've got XGL working with KDE flawlessly, using KDM, a few days ago. GDM's being a real bugger though, and I can't think how to fix it
Any suggestions? The log in /var/log/gdm is of no use.

    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xgl … starts_XGL
Use the second method so that GDM starts on a regular X server
I dont use XGL myself cause its very unstable.. but i might try it (or not cause i just read all the problems on the bottom.. its really not worth the fun i can have lol)

  • Firefox won't load .mov files online but plays them locally: QT problem?

My website has several pages with embedded .mov files, which used to play perfectly well, but now only give a question mark after the progress bar fills up.
For example, one of these pages is http://www.paulozelinsky.com/shivers-animation2a.html
Firefox can open this and similar pages that are stored in my computer (on a mirror of the site) and view the animations normally. But online it doesn't work. Typing the path to the online animation file into Firefox's URL field also produces an empty QuickTime window with a question mark, so it's not a matter of the page code.
Is it possible that QuickTime's plugin isn't compatible with Firefox, at least for .mov files like mine? (Created with After Effects 7, using Sorensen 3 codec). Does Firefox use plugins in the same way for playing a file on a web server as playing it in a local folder? Or could there be something going on with my web host?
I would at least like to know if this failure to load the animation is the same for other Mac Firefox users. I have heard that the animation does load, though slowly, for at least one PC Firefox user.
When I first noticed the change, the problem was occurring in Safari as well as Firefox, but now it is only in Firefox.
    I have Firefox 3.6.8, and in HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins I have QuickTime Plugin.plugin v. 7.6.6. I also see in there something called nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt.

Bump, bump. Please can anybody help?

  • Solaris 10 x86 cdrw trouble.  Gnome and command line problems writing.

I'm experiencing general weirdness trying to write CD's and DVD's using a new internal DVD-RW device -- It's a Sony NEC AD 7220 A CD / DVD RW drive on a Solaris 10 x86 AMD system. I have searched far and wide for other threads of similar instances but no one has posted an issue like the one I'm having.
    I have a Sony Optiarc AD 7220 A CD-RW on a x86 AMD Athalon 1.6 ghz based server with 2 GB RAM.
The DVD-RW drive gets detected by BIOS (Phoenix TrustedCore 2.3) and reads disks fine. I installed Solaris 10.08 from DVD using this DVD-RW drive.
However, trying to write to new blank media does not work properly, (effectively at all).
I've tried different brands of brands of blank CD's and CD-R and CD+R (have not tried using CD-RW disks yet). Ditto with DVD's - tried DVD-R and DVD+R's.
    1. Inside the Solaris 10 GUI (Gnome, a.k.a. Java Desktop), when I put in a blank CD-R, a dialog box "Format Media...?" pops up. If I click "Ok" it formats the blank CD and closes the session, CD has been written to and is ruined.
    2. I open a terminal window, as root, and put in a blank CD. "mkisofs –r /home/foo 2>/dev/null | cdrw –i –p 1" will write a directory tree OK, but if I go back into gnome GUI and open and close the CD tray, again, up pops the "Format Media..." dialog box instead of the CD appearing on the desktop. If I restart vold (svcadm restart volfs) then open and close the CD tray, voila, the contents appear on desktop as CD icon.
    3. When I try to write to a DVD-R: "cdrw -i /local/iso_image" It always fails with: Write Track 1....Failed. after a few minutes. It did in fact write part of the .iso but bails out with a failure.
I've tried various other write commands (specifying the device ID, speed, so on and so forth) and command line switch options (following the rules of course) and it seems to me to be more than a syntax / media issue. However if it is I would like to know. I did see a similar CDRW device on the HCL for OpenSolaris with a 'reported to work' rating. That was for a Optiarc AD-5200A, which is going away thus my company has chosen to use the AD 7220A in speciality racks we build and deliver to the U.S. Navy.
I really need to get a handle on this CD-RW device issue and decide if a different brand / model is what it's going to take to solve this and move on to producing and delivering these systems in working conditions.

Sony systems are often very particular about what CD's and DVD's they'll take. I have several Sony systems that I use for video work and they'll read almost anything but they'll only write to DVD RW.  They also don't like cheap brand CD's and DVD's.  Be sure to try both CD RW and DVD RW before doing anything else.  Because of the requirement for DVD RW, they won't take fast speed (16x) DVD's, just 4x. If all of this turns out to be the case, you may want to go with a different manufacturer for the drive, DVD +RW 4x aren't always easy to find in the store.

When I start up it boots into GDM but goes to failsafe with a single terminal and that is it.  I would then go to init 3 and startx from there.  Goes to Gnome.  I open a terminal and use gdmsetup and get that another login manager is starting a boot up.  I changed .xinitrc and inittab to point to gnome and gdm but nothing.  What am I missing.  KDE is uninstalled, is it possible the kdm didn't uninstall.

    Hi,
i opened the excel file in notepad and i saw the values are not converted. 06MAY51
and i created a blank excel file then i entered this value into a blank cell then i saw the values are converted by the excel.
so i think there is no problem in SAP.
the another way is to display ALV as Excel in SAP using Excel button on ALV then save the Excel, but if the ALV have too much values, it is not working. it is waiting too much. it is trying to compile the ALV to Excel format.
    Thanks
