Gnome hang

Hi,
Having some trouble with gnome hanging and it has quickly gone beyond my knowledge, wandering if anyone can set me off in the right direction.  Only odd thing here is I am running it in a virtual box VM with the virtual box tools (its got plenty of RAM / space assigned to it)
Basically it hangs in two ways:
On power on, the background comes up but never reaches the login screen (this is GDM isnt it...).  This generally happens ~50% of the time.  When it happens, if I change to a different terminal, sudo pkill X, then the login screen loads every time.  I know when its going to crash as when the backgournd displays for the first time it gets shaded dark then bright as the login screen kicks in, when it crashes it never goes dark.
Then, when I login ~80% of the time it hangs.  My desktop appears but nothing else, then after 30s or so an Oops something went wrong message pops up and I am taken back to the login screen.  Generally I know when its going to work as I get some darkening / the login desktop and my desktop are 50% transparent for a second or so then the destop bars / panels pops up.
Has anyone experienced this or know how to fix or where to start looking?
I have tried looking through xorg logs but have not seen anything.  Recently learning things about the session its running but not getting anywhere with that.  I've looked on this forum for something similar and have tried things like deleting my session preferences in .config etc but nothing is working.  Oddly enought, when I first installed the VM it was running fine so I do not know what has changed, I've updated maybe 2 or 3 times since.
Any help would be great thanks,
Jon

  • KDE / gnome hang while starting

    Hi,
well, KDE and Gnome hang while starting them, when I change back to console, I can read the following:
xset: bad font path element (#63), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
        Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
I reinstalled xorg, kde, gnome, but again it simply hangs, xorg starts up normally, but when changing to kde or gnome it hangs
    xfce4, wmi, dr17 run well.
I didn change any config filel...
So any idea what could be wrong ?
    thanks
    Kin
PS.: Is there a possiblility to let pacman reinstall ALL packages that are already installed ?

rebuild of kdebase didn't change anything. Running kbuildsycoca with new user from xfce first gives:

  • Gnome hangs when changing theme [SOLVED]

    Hey guys,
Don't know if anyone had this problem of if its been posted before so anyways .....
I recently installed Voodoo with kde, gnome & xfce.
My main desktop is KDE but I do use GNOME & XFCE occasionally.
When on KDE I like to be able to change my gtk theme so I installed gtk-qt-engine.
After choosing a theme in the GTK-QT-Engine settings box my gtk apps would adjust accordingly and everything would be fine.
However, when I logged into GNOME and tried to change the GNOME theme .... my desktop would freeze
If I did a ctrl+atl+del I would be taken to gdm but would now get .Xsession errors when trying to re-login.
I would have to login back to KDE, delete the gconf directories and only then was I able to log back into GNOME.
Now the reason I could not change the theme in GNOME was coz the gtk-qt-engine program modified my .gtkrc-2.0 .... and this was causing all the hang ups .... pun intended.
So I edited the gtk-qt-engine modified .gtkrc-2.0 file & commented out everything.
After this GNOME works perfectly and changing themes is now a snap
    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers,
    hack

Thank you!  This saved my life!  Well, it did not save my life but it was important.   I thought my GNOME was borked and ended up deleting every config and re-installing it before I came across this.  DOH!

  • Gnome hangs, xfce4 works :(

Suddenly gnome doesn't want to start when I run startx ("exec gnome-session" in .xinitrc). All I get is a black screen with the mouse cursor. From there I only have CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE as an option. startxfce4 works fine (i'm using it now..). I don't get any errormsg from startx either. I've tried to delete the .gnome2* folders.. no help.
Any suggestions, log files to look in etc?
I have no (EE) in the latest Xorg.log file, nor any (WW) to be woried about.

Droog - that may be so, but I hate to not know why gnome boorks on me. Whats the different with xfce4 in arch repo and xfce-svn?
Also, if I start a program like totem (which was installed during gnome installation), it doesn't display for ages. I can try to start it, and it goes over 10 minutes before it starts/displays

  • Gnome-window-decorator missing after upgrade

Last night I did a pacman -Syu from a archlinux cd installation, this fixed many many problems, but broke compiz-git, which I like so much.
Now when I run startxgl script, I get no window decoration in gnome, and gnome-window-decorator, the binary, is missing.
This makes me remember when we changed from gwd to cgwd, which, I think sucks.
Is there a way to fix this? I want my window decorations back
any help would be very appreciated

thanks for your reply twistedkaos, but I dont want to use cgwd, I want to use compiz-git
I tried copying my gnome-window-decorator binary from /bin from ubuntu dapper to /bin of archlinux, guess what? it worked perfectly. I just had to put "--replace" to the last gnome-window-decorator call of startxgl (the one that calls gnome-session).
Well, not so perfect so far, gnome hangs at startup loading gnome-wm or something like that (I can see it sessions > running) but if I click on "remove" and "apply", it reloads and everything works well (still no good log out, I have to kill my X)
Now it is not working because I messed up my session gnome config which I dont know how to clean back, but, its there, its not difficult, and its probably not the cleanest way to do it
I will upload the gwd binary somewhere so you guys can use it too
    here it is : http://webrepository.unlugar.com/arch/g … -decorator

Hi there. Below are my .xinitrc and rc.conf files. I tried changing from xdm to gdm in my inittab but no go I still hang when reaching gdm.
@RicardoAR: I dont know if I am using prelink. I can try checking it in pacman's cache/pkg folder. If none will download in the repos. I understand your message pretty much and will try this exercise.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome login hangs on the first try

Since this past weekend, when I try to log into gnome, it accepts my password and greys out the password entry box, but just sits there forever. If I hit escape it aborts properly, and the second try always works. Where should I be looking to see what's going wrong the first time?
I'm also having another, more serious problem that may be related: whenever the "Authentication Required" window pops up for a settings change or mounting another disk, it gives me the same greyed-out hang. But trying again doesn't work, since cancelling it cancels the attempt altogether - the next try just hangs again. As it is I can only do any root operations through the command-line; gnome is totally neutered by this. So -- what is this gksu-like functionality of gnome 3 properly called, and how do I debug it? Does it have a log somewhere I should look for?

I've restarted polkitd on the command-line without --no-debug, and it shows NO relevant information at all. After cancelling the grayed-out dialog, I get:
Error performing authentication: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Cancelled: Authentication dialog was dismissed by the user (polkit-error-quark 1)
21:54:02.838: Operator of unix-session:2 FAILED to authenticate to gain authorization for action org.freedesktop.policykit.exec for unix-process:10885:60499253 [bash] (owned by unix-user:jorenko)
But there's nothing from when I entered my password and the graying-out began.
Interestingly, when I used --replace to replace the polkitd that systemd had started for me, I got only command-line auth (gnome wouldn't launch the dialog at all, and "pkexec echo hi" gave me a command-line password prompt), which actually worked. But when first stopping the systemd version, then running it again manually, I got the above result.

  • Gnome 3 hanging when I switch workspaces

Recently, Gnome 3 has begun hanging when I switch workspaces, sometimes for as long as 10 seconds or so. It's seriously affecting usability. Anyone have any ideas about how to fix it or at least diagnose the problem? I will happily post any config files or command output. Thank you.

  • Gnome 2.4 - Nautilus hangs

I am completely new to Arch Linux - have just completed installation of Arch 0.5 on my laptop which formerly ran Gentoo. I am impressed until now, but I have a problem with Gnome 2.4. I've installed all Gnome packages but when I start Gnome (from gdm) I first get an error message about Gnome not being able to resolve the host name of my machine to an IP address and when it comes to loading Nautilus it just hangs. I haven't run Gnome in more than 2 years so I have absolutely no idea about what to do ;-). Can anyone help?
And by the way, where is the config file for gdm - I want to add more sessions.
    /Pyke

Thanx. I had figured out the hosts file was to blame. However, it raises a new question: How do I make dhcpcd add the IP address and hostname of my machine automatically to the hosts file (I change domains quite often, so I don't want to have to do it manually).
Well, back to the Gnome problem. I better explain myself more clearly: Gnome simply doesn't start. It just hangs with the splash screen and the message "Loading Nautilus". Nothing happens after that and top shows me that Nautilus isn't loading - in fact no processes related to Gnome consume CPU time after that. Here's a list of what I've done on the box until now:
    - install Arch 0.5 - only base packages
    - configure the system
    - install X and configure it
    - install Gnome and add gdm to the daemon part of rc.conf
Shouldn't Gnome work out of the box on a completely new and clean system?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

  • Weird behaviour... lots of hanging, lots of crashing... GNOME.

I've noticed the past couple of days that my system has been behaving strangely, sometimes programs won't load at all, or they load several minutes later.  I haven't made any system changes that I can think of... and I've checked the usual suspects such as the hostname settings.
Now tonight I installed DVDrip and AcidRip (after doing a system update (-Syu) and when I attempt to run either program I get this error:
    Can't locate strict.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.7/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.7 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.5/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.5 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.4/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.4 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.2/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.2 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.1/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.1 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i686-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl .) at /usr/bin/acidrip line 7.

Also, k3b started hanging earlier today... not loading when launched, etc.  I deleted ~/.kde and that seemed to fix the problem with k3b, but it's strange that all of this happening today....
Has anyone else noticed any anomalies with GNOME this past week?
    Last edited by thayer.w (2007-07-15 05:15:33)

For the record, reinstalling the perl package seemed to fix the errors quoted above.  As for k3b, it's still taking about 2 minutes to load.

  • [SOVLED] GNOME 3 - How to disable suspend? Causes laptop to hang.

Using GNOME 3, if my laptop lid is accidentally closed, GNOME 3 forces it to suspend, which causes my system to hang, and I loose all my work.
Is there any way to disable this astoundingly-well thought-out feature?
I've tried getting suspend to work really, really, really hard. I have the problem where my system suspends fine, but when it resumes, none of the keys work (including caps lock), and there is no way to turn the laptop off. Pressing and holding the power to 10 seconds causes it to suspend again. Pressing it again cause hp's bios panic sequence. (White lights on the keybord blink twice every second). I have to disconnect to power adapter and then remove the battery to get the system to power off, only then I can restart it normally.

I've tried the pm-utils and uswsusp.
The pm-utils log did not show any warnings. Apparently other people with Ati cards also have this issue, but the suggested workarounds at uswsusp do not work for my system.
The site said the cards drivers had issues restoring the framebuffer,
I tried switching to KDE but its startup is too slow for my likes. Then I tried XFCE but, in short, there were some unresolvable problems,..

    Oh shoot.
    That worked great. Thanks..
I'd tried gnome-tweak-tool before, however changing settings in it were not reflecting on the system.
Just now I found that's because I had been running under sudo. When I ran it as a normal user it worked. :-)
    Thank you!

  • Gnome 3 activity view hangs??

    I am using Gnome 3.2.1-1
If I activate the activity view ( by holding mouse in upper right corner), normally several icons appear to show my applications available.  Nothing appears when I do it now.
Also, if I type in the search bar of the activity view, then the activity view "crashes" and returns to a desktop view.
How do I search for my issue?
    Thank you
P.S. Over the past few days while using Gnome 3 , the system logs out back to the login screen without warning.  Are these problems related?

Did it have any issues previously?

  • Gnome 3.4 sometimes hangs after login

I've been experiencing this issue about 1/3 of the time I have booted my computer since the upgrade to Gnome 3.4. Sometimes I get an unresponsive desktop, where I can move the mouse, but nothing else happens. I am able to switch to tty1, login as root, and restart gdm, which works. Does anyone have suggestions? Any log files I should look at when this happens?

hadrons123 wrote:I don't know. Is there any particular advantage in keeping gdm?
Nothing... it is just a quirk of mine. If i have gnome, i'd rather install gdm over lxdm. However, if lxdm is better than gdm, there's no problem by trying it. Btw, i love lxde. It's just amazing how uncomplicated it is.

ok, i've used pango-querymodules. i also did a pacman -Syu, but the error is still there. XFree86.0.log shows no errors and i'm using a XF86Config-4 generated by hwd. btw Xfce works fine.

  • Gnome splash screen hangs

This is a minor irriation but I would like to resolve it. When I log into gnome, the splash screen just sits there, if I click on it, it will go away. It does this on four different boxes. I created a new user on one box and it goes away like it should. I tried removing .gconf and .gnome in an attempt to purge config files but it made no difference.
Has anyone seen this or have a fix for it?
I will keep looking in the meantime.

Do you have your "lo" device up with address 127.0.0.1? This happened to me when I forgot to put the network rc script in the DAEMONS array in /etc/rc.conf.
What happens is that gnome-settings-daemon starts looking for fam via portmap. Portmap should listen on 127.0.0.1, so it looks there. If the lo interface is down, this lookup takes forever.
