Gnome hangs, xfce4 works :(

Suddenly gnome doesn't want to start when I run startx ("exec gnome-session" in .xinitrc). All I get is a black screen with the mouse cursor. From there I only have CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE as an option. startxfce4 works fine (i'm using it now..). I don't get any errormsg from startx either. I've tried to delete the .gnome2* folders.. no help.
Any suggestions, log files to look in etc?
I have no (EE) in the latest Xorg.log file, nor any (WW) to be woried about.

Droog - that may be so, but I hate to not know why gnome boorks on me. Whats the different with xfce4 in arch repo and xfce-svn?
Also, if I start a program like totem (which was installed during gnome installation), it doesn't display for ages. I can try to start it, and it goes over 10 minutes before it starts/displays

  • Gnome hang

    Hi,
Having some trouble with gnome hanging and it has quickly gone beyond my knowledge, wandering if anyone can set me off in the right direction.  Only odd thing here is I am running it in a virtual box VM with the virtual box tools (its got plenty of RAM / space assigned to it)
Basically it hangs in two ways:
On power on, the background comes up but never reaches the login screen (this is GDM isnt it...).  This generally happens ~50% of the time.  When it happens, if I change to a different terminal, sudo pkill X, then the login screen loads every time.  I know when its going to crash as when the backgournd displays for the first time it gets shaded dark then bright as the login screen kicks in, when it crashes it never goes dark.
Then, when I login ~80% of the time it hangs.  My desktop appears but nothing else, then after 30s or so an Oops something went wrong message pops up and I am taken back to the login screen.  Generally I know when its going to work as I get some darkening / the login desktop and my desktop are 50% transparent for a second or so then the destop bars / panels pops up.
Has anyone experienced this or know how to fix or where to start looking?
I have tried looking through xorg logs but have not seen anything.  Recently learning things about the session its running but not getting anywhere with that.  I've looked on this forum for something similar and have tried things like deleting my session preferences in .config etc but nothing is working.  Oddly enought, when I first installed the VM it was running fine so I do not know what has changed, I've updated maybe 2 or 3 times since.
Any help would be great thanks,
    Jon

  • KDE / gnome hang while starting

    Hi,
well, KDE and Gnome hang while starting them, when I change back to console, I can read the following:
xset: bad font path element (#63), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
        Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
I reinstalled xorg, kde, gnome, but again it simply hangs, xorg starts up normally, but when changing to kde or gnome it hangs
    xfce4, wmi, dr17 run well.
I didn change any config filel...
So any idea what could be wrong ?
    thanks
    Kin
PS.: Is there a possiblility to let pacman reinstall ALL packages that are already installed ?

rebuild of kdebase didn't change anything. Running kbuildsycoca with new user from xfce first gives:

    kbuildsycoca running...

my iphone is hanging while working with whats up. kindly help

    I assume you mean whatsapp.
First double click the home button and swipe the app closed.
If it still doesn't work try a reset. Press and hold the home and power buttons until the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons. Wait until your iPhone starts on it's own.
If whatsapp is still giving you problems try deleting and reinstalling the app.

  • Gnome-panel not working when auto-started in openbox

    Salut,
trying to get openbox to work with gnome-panel. Everything works fine if I run gnome-panel when openbox is already started.
But when trying to add gnome-panel to the autostart.sh with
    (sleep 1 && gnome-panel) &
as the last line, I get the error message
    ========================
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet".
Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?
    ========================
for 3 or 4 applets. How to solve this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Stefan

I found a workaround for the problem.
Install xfce4-panel and xfce4-xfapplet-plugin and you will be able to run the gnome applets in the excellent and lightweight xfce4-panel.
    It works fine for me

  • Gnome hangs when changing theme [SOLVED]

    Hey guys,
Don't know if anyone had this problem of if its been posted before so anyways .....
I recently installed Voodoo with kde, gnome & xfce.
My main desktop is KDE but I do use GNOME & XFCE occasionally.
When on KDE I like to be able to change my gtk theme so I installed gtk-qt-engine.
After choosing a theme in the GTK-QT-Engine settings box my gtk apps would adjust accordingly and everything would be fine.
However, when I logged into GNOME and tried to change the GNOME theme .... my desktop would freeze
If I did a ctrl+atl+del I would be taken to gdm but would now get .Xsession errors when trying to re-login.
I would have to login back to KDE, delete the gconf directories and only then was I able to log back into GNOME.
Now the reason I could not change the theme in GNOME was coz the gtk-qt-engine program modified my .gtkrc-2.0 .... and this was causing all the hang ups .... pun intended.
So I edited the gtk-qt-engine modified .gtkrc-2.0 file & commented out everything.
After this GNOME works perfectly and changing themes is now a snap
    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers,
    hack

Thank you!  This saved my life!  Well, it did not save my life but it was important.   I thought my GNOME was borked and ended up deleting every config and re-installing it before I came across this.  DOH!

  • Media Encoder CC hangs when working with 96/24 audio

Title says it all! Has anyone else had this problem with Media Encoder CC? I just upgraded from CS5.5 to CC, and there were no issues with encoding 96/24 audio with CS5.5. I can reduce the audio files to 48/16 and theres no issue, but all the asset files for audio are in 96/24 and I'd of course rather work with the high resolution audio. I've tried searching the interwebz on the issue but can't find anything specific to the audio causing Encoder to hang. Thanks!

    Thomas Nord wrote:
Update: We have discovered an issue where you can get this behavior if the source is a Premeire Pro sequence whose sample rate doesn't match that of the clips in that sequence. The solution is to match the sample rate of your sequence to that of your clips. Please let me know if this does not resolve your issue.
    Thanks,
    Tom
I had some 96/16 audio from an H4n recorder. AME just sat there. Also had the same problem exporting directly from PPro without using AME. Just sat there, no error, just nothing.
Changed the final sequence samples to 96kHz sampling and problem solved. That's a real bummer, since Adobe definitely pushes the sort of "edit anything" mantra a lot, and having to tailor sequence settings to a recently added audio clip is a step in the wrong direction. Glad to know it CAN be fixed, since these renders need to happen, but need that one patched up.

  • [SOLVED] After upgrade gdm and Gnome don't work.

    Hi,
after I did an upgrade I had some ldconfig: errors and fixed them all using pkgfile and reinstallation of quite some packages.
    But now starting gdm with
    # systemctl start gdm
only leads to a black screen with a cross shaped cursor I can move. Nothing more.
Xorg works -- I'm writing this post from KDE.
I reinstalled gnome and gnome-extra. Still no success.
    System is up to date.
Hopefully my logs will help, I have no idea what to do. Thanks for any help. :)

    Finally managed fixed it.
libcanberra-pulse from [extra] was broken. I reinstalled it with --force.
Likely that came with the recent pulseaudio upgrade.

  • [Solved] [Gnome 3.4.1] Gnome shell not working.

After updating Gnome, it won't start. It is a bit weird because in xsession-errors I have this:
/usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libcogl.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I said OK. I can downgrade that package because I had libcogl.so.9. But after downgrading it wasn't working and in log was:
/usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libcogl.so.9: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I really don't know what to do. Btw Arch X86_64.

  • Photoshop and Illustrator sometimes hang when working together (CS 5.5)

    Hi all,
I'm working with Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium 5.5 and sometimes, when I have Photoshop and Illustrator opened together, if I try to open something a little more complex (but not to heavy), one of the programs hang or freeze.
This is a Windows 7 (64bits) Service Pack 1 environment, on a HP Workstation 2.67Ghz Quad with 8GB of RAM, using a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800. At a first glance - and regarding the files usage - it doesn't seem to have a reason to happen.
I've updated the program versions and let Photoshop use more than 60% of the available RAM. When this happens, 50% of the physical RAM is available.
Besides having these two apps running, I have Outlook 2010, Linotype Font Explorer Pro and some LAN policies active.
Does anyone had a similar problem that could kindly help?
    Many thanks,
    Tiago

What does Windows Event Viewer say about the matter? if it is as arbitrary as you say, then it's most likely network issues or graphics issues. In the latter case simply install a suitable driver and configure it properly, in case of network issues (to which in particular Ilklustrator is extremely sensitive), store the files on a local harddrive.

Also, i've installed some gnome extensions:dash to dock, openweather, drop down terminal, user themes, windownavigator.
However, animation is laggy when i use superkey or click on activities in top left corner. Sometimes when i click on icon in applications menu that effect is slowed and laggy.
So i wanna ask you, is mu computer really that old and weak for gnome?
p.s. Same behavior is with nouveau drivers.
On the same laptop i can play dota2,HoN, kde is working fine...

    Hi,
I'm having the same issue but found a workaround:
I assume that your favourite contact is associated with a facebook contact, right? What you have to do is
    1) disable "do not disturb" mode
    2) delete the contact from your favorite list
    3) edit the contact: delete the association with the facebook contact
    4) re-add the contact phone number to the favorite list
    5) optional: edit the contact, re-associate the contact to the related facebook contact
    6) enable the "do not disturb" mode.
For me this worked, once a contact phone number is added to the favorite list while the contact is NOT linked to the related facebook contact will allow this contact to call you while in do not disturb mode.
If the contact phone number is added while it is linked to a facebook contact any calls from the number will be blocked.
Anyone who can re-produce and confirm this?
Seems to be a bug, maybe I'll open another thread and report it to Apple.

  • Aperture 3 hanging when working with 120,000 image library

I love Aperture. Have used Aperture since v1, now on 3, Snow Leopard 10.6.6. MacPro 3.0 with 20GB RAM and four 7200 3TB HDrives. Shoot a Nikon D3 and others.
I have a big referenced library running internally on Drive 2, images are internally on drive 4. About 120,000 in total, mostly RAW (NEF).
For some time I have had hangs, spinning ball. Some will clear, but most will not, requiring force quit.
I have repaired permissions, on hard drives as well as in Aperture.
Hangs happen when I click on a Folder, or sometimes when selecting image.
I moved everything to a Referenced system to correct this problem, but seemed to not solve things.
I do also use Aperture to catalog Photoshop files, so dont know whether this creates an increased RAM or CPU issue.
Have sent crash reports to Apple, but not heard back yet.
I shoot professionally, sometimes 2,000 per day, so need this to become more reliable.
    Any suggestions.
    Many thanks!

Thanks so much for your time.
You're welcome. I appreciate your mentioning it.
I have found leaving the Activity Monitor on, where I watch the RAM / MEM usage, is a clue as to whether its still thinking.
I do the same. In addition to AM, I use +iStat Menus 3+, a nifty system-reporting menulet. Recommended (just a satisfied user).
I also need to tell you I do allow my assistant, using a 27"iMac, to access my MASTER LIBRARY from her computer. (Different Aperture 3 version, and mine is shut down).
Supposedly this is ok (acording to Apple) but I am v suspicious. Sometimes it takes forever to load, and I have seen "strange" things like keywords go missing.
Until you have everything working well ... can you refrain from opening your Library using different program installations? I think you are right to be suspicious. (And trouble-shooting strategy would favor limiting problems and then bringing things back as a way of isolating the cause.)
Please check out my response to the others - I stated library size/capacities.
I don't think Library size is the problem.
I wish I could limit my Projects to 500 Masters, but most of the shoots I do are sports, where I will shoot 1,000 to 3,000 images in a day or two.
However, it can be done if this is the issue.
It could be voodoo, but it has become part of the more-or-less generally accepted best practices. You do know that in addition to selecting multiple Projects in order to see all of their images in the Viewer, you can also put Projects in a Folder and just select the Folder. Selecting a Folder in the Library Inspector will show the contents of all Projects and Albums "held" by that Folder. You might -- as an example -- make a Folder for a game, and then put each quarters' shots in its own Project.
I run dual monitors. HOWEVER, I am suspicious of my NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT card. 512 VRAM, 1920x1200 dual outputs. Not sure if this is my problem.
However, I can run Photoshop 5, DW5, InDesign, etc, along with the normal appls, with no problem. Sometimes I have 15-20 PSD files open, and I never use all my RAM.
I run huge Library on a machine w. 4 GB RAM. I don't think your RAM is the source of your problems.
I can't with any expertise address the issue of the video card. My hunch is that this is one of the rough edges of heavy Aperture use, but it's just a hunch.
Rejected/Trash. I find it takes forever to empty Aperture Trash. Have you found that> Did you know you have to empty twice, from Ap AND from OS10.6?
IME, it gets better if you do it often (all the way to system Trash). I have in past had to wait hours for the Aperture Trash to empty. Haven't seen that is a while, though.
Im going to try and move the MAIN LIBRARY to another, newer, drive. See if this works.
One of the biggest advantages will be the defragmentation of the hundreds of thousands of Library files.
I have wondered whether I should invest in a Solid State Internal drive.
    Thoughts on that?
Go for it. I will buy one the day I can afford one. I am sure it is the very best performance investment you can make for Aperture.
Cheers. Post when you've found something out.

  • GNOME doesn't work correctly with startx only by GDM

This is driving me nuts, I'm having a bunch of problems because I'm starting my GNOME session using startx instead of GDM and this bugs me a lot because I prefer startx most of the times...
    1) One of the problems is that the sound does not work with startx. Starting through GDM, the sound is ok. What's even more frustrating is that sometimes, it doesn't even work through GDM
    2) I can't unlock anything in the "System » Administration" menu. All of the "unlock" buttons are grayed out and I can't click them. But it works on GDM. However, whatever setting I change (after unlocking) is not saved...

tandycorp wrote:But since your settings cannot be saved correctly you should first try to correct that problem, then the audio problem should  be easy to resolve. In my case the settings are saved correctly (I first installed gdm then completely deleted it). You may want to look to the hal wiki and add your user in /etc/d-bus/system.d/hal.conf. It looks like a session problem.
I've read the wiki but I don't know what should I do to the hal.conf everything seems "normal" to me...
    EDIT:
I don't know what I've done (changed lots of things lately and configuration files) but the sound seems to be working now... Not every time, but most of the time, it seems so. I have enabled the button sound (when you click a button) temporarily to see if the sound keeps working for the time being...
Also, the unlock button now is enabled and here's a thing I found about the settings not being saved. I open "Administration » Services", for instance, and click "unlock", input password, enable GDM, which was disabled of course and click "close". I open "Administration » Services" again and with everything disabled, I see that GDM is not checked, still, I click "unlock" again, the services list is unlocked and GDM is still unchecked. But, if I look inside /etc/rc.conf, I can see the gdm daemon was added to the list... If I reboot the computer, GDM will start automatically and if once again I go to "Administration » Services", now I see GDM checked. If I try to uncheck it, it will work, but I will only see the unchecked value in the "Services" window after another reboot. Is this normal?

  • SSH Agent in GNOME Doesn't Work

    Hey There,
I'm using GNOME for my personal desktop needs.. I have to connect to several remote server (or PC's) in a shell and I don't want to re-enter my passwords in the same session. This is my problem:
    [14:28] (tunix@penguix ~)$ ps aux |grep ssh
    root      6264  0.0  0.0   3756   816 ?        Ss   09:03   0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd
    tunix     6457  0.0  0.0   3400   508 ?        Ss   09:05   0:00 /usr/bin/ssh-agent -- /usr/bin/gnome-session
    tunix    19141  0.0  0.0   3428   784 pts/2    R+   14:28   0:00 grep ssh
    [14:28] (tunix@penguix ~)$ ssh tunix@kulupler
    Enter passphrase for key '/home/tunix/.ssh/id_rsa':
    Last login: Sat Sep 29 14:22:37 2007 from 85.97.128.179
    [14:26] (tunix@kulupler ~)$ logout
    Connection to kulupler closed.
    [14:28] (tunix@penguix ~)$ ssh tunix@kulupler
    Enter passphrase for key '/home/tunix/.ssh/id_rsa':
    [14:28] (tunix@penguix ~)$
So SSH Agent doesn't cache or save the passwords I enter.. So I have to enter the password each time. (Maybe this is happening because of the same reason why Seahorse doesn't working on my system.. :S)
    Thanks for any replies..

Did you run ssh-add to tell ssh-agent which key to use ?  If not, ssh-agent will not know anything about any keys/pass phrases you enter into specific ssh sessions.
There's a pretty good tutorial here, with all the basic steps :
    http://mah.everybody.org/docs/ssh
    WRT seahorse...
Is seahorse-daemon running ?  I haven't used seahorse, so I only have the following as a reference :
    http://live.gnome.org/Seahorse/SSHAgent
