Gnome OSS mixer (support?)

Hello all. Seeing as OSS came back to the official repos I finally went through the pain of installing it on my test setup (ALSA is blacklisted, user is in audio group, ossmix is set up, etc.)
Sound works and all, however I'd like to be able to use the latest GNOME integrated mixer (which based on the OSS wiki page should support it). Sadly, it does not.
OSS works fine (flashplayer is working, SMplayer with Mplayer2 is working) but not gnome test (in gnome settings).
I have ossvol (for volume control, for now). Any idea on how to get the supposedly supported mixer working?

You can use ossxmix if you really desire a GUI, but currently gnome, xfce and kde's native mixers don't work with oss4 unless patched. If you google arround you are likely to find a patch for your mixer, but these are mostly dirty hacks. Use ossxmix for now.

  • OSS and Support Packages

    Hi all,
Is ther any difference between the OSS and support packages?
    Plz explain for this one.
    regatrds
    vijay

    Hi,
    IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE
Support packages provide a bundle of fixes in electronic form that are imported into the SAP system. These Support packages must be imported in order (starting with the very first one) and they cannot be skipped.  All fixes within a Support package must be imported together, there is no ability to pick and choose the fixes.
The second form of fixes that SAP provides is via OSS notes that pertain to specific problems. These notes must be manually applied to the system, as these fixes are generally not available in electronic form at the time the note is published. Care must be taken to ensure that the note is entered correctly otherwise new problems may occur, or the existing problem is not corrected.
A Support package may contain fixes that also exist as individual notes, but many times they contain fixes that are only provided in Support packages. SAP’s strategy for providing intra-release fixes is through Support packages and the use of individual notes is decreasing.
I hope this information could help you.

  • Disable Mic on Realtek ALC888 (OSS Mixer)

I now have my microphone (on headset) working on my Realtek ALC888 (OSS Mixer) so I can use Skype, but now that I figured out which switch to flip on ossxmix, it leaves the mic on always and there's a bit of a hiss.
Can I tell it to NOT be an "input" except when I am using it?

Easiest way is to mute everything and try yo unmute one or two things at a time until you have sound back (hiss free of course).
Then figure out what to unmute just to record sound but not hear yourself.

  • Realtek ALC888 (OSS Mixer) Very Quiet

xfce4-mixer says I am using "Realtek ALC888 (OSS Mixer)" and the speakers and mic work, but the speakers are VERY quiet. I can't hear well enough to make a phone call with Skype. So I tried this:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfc … ew_Xfce4.6
and it's not any better (I rebooted after I did that just to be sure). I have the volume on the physical speakers on 100% and xfce4-mixer also set to 100%.
I know that these speakers are actually pretty loud because other distros were LOUD.
Any suggestions how to debug this?
    Thanks.

To clarify, I don't actually care if I use oss or alsa or a
kerosene-powered dust buster. I just want to be able to hear youtube and
Skype normally. And the problem isn't just Skype--also youtube is very
    quiet.
I removed oss and alsa was still there. Or it claimed to be. I rebooted
but amixer and alsaconf were 'command not found'
I installed oss again and soundon gave a crazy output about conflicting
drivers. So I rebooted. When I now click on my Xfce mixer panel addon it says
GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system
specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions
    problem.
So I added myself (once again) to the audio group and installed oss again. Now I see this:
    [kirk@localhost ~]$ /etc/rc.d/oss restart
:: Stopping Open Sound System [BUSY] /etc/rc.d/oss: line 18: /usr/sbin/soundoff: Permission denied

  • OSS + mixer volume

Hello folks, started using Arch a few days ago, must say I'm really impressed by the ease of use and stability I've gotten to know.
I installed OSS 4.0 instead of ALSA because OSS carries beta drivers for the X-Fi series of cards which I shamefully have, so far the playback is running well, I can't have multiple programs accessing the device however, but that's for another time.
What I really want to know is how I can have the volume control in XFCE to regulate the volume for the card. In the terminal I can use 'ossmix play <no>' to change the volume of the card, ranging from 0 - 14.
I need to know this because changing the volume and balance in XMMS does not change a thing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Zandaa

  • No surround mixer support for Audigy 4

I have spent about 3 hours trying to find ways to get surrond mixer to work, and i dont have the cd. It looks like creative didnt even put any support on their downloads for managing speaker channels. Which makes the card useless for people who want SURROUND SOUND! Am I the only person have problems, i check all the downloads and there is no surround mixer to my knowledge, why is this so?

    get the cd from

  • SoundBlaster mixer support under plain DOS?

I have the following problem at hand - I want to run some DOS based programs (mainly old games and demos) which use SoundBlaster.
When the integrated AC97 codec is enabled in BIOS and also the legacy SoundBlaster support (with 220, 5 and 1) and I have set the BLASTER environment variable, then the SoundBlaster is detected successfully, but the sound remains muted - it works, but can only barely be heard when I turn the external amplifier up extremely high. I believe the problem is in AC97 codec and BIOS which does not set the registers for the AC97 chip properly.
Does anyone know of a DOS based AC97 mixer controller or any info on how to turn off the mute and turn up the volume of AC97 codec _in DOS_ so that DOS based programs can use the SoundBlaster emulation?
My rig consists of MSI K7T Pro2-A under a 1GHz Athlon TBird and 512 MB of memory.
    Bratac

It seems that I got this thing worked out. From the link given by Bas (thanks!) above I got the the AC97 mixer by Alex Mina, which actually does the trick, though from under Windows.
So, I installed a barebone Win98SE, but didn't install VIA audio driver. Windows detected the BIOS enabled SoundBlaster Pro emulation and installed the crude SB Pro driver.
At first it was like before - max amplification revealed sound working, but being muted like before. Now Alex's AC97 mixer helped - I was able to un-mute the global volume and PCM line volume of the AC97 codec, and voila - there was sound.
Now I exited to MS-DOS and most DOS things work with SB Pro settings, even those that require the CPU _not_ to be in virtual x86 mode !

  • Why isn't multipart/mixed supported in Mail?

If I'm not mistaken multipart/mixed content types aren't supported in Mail.app and I'm told I should be using multipart/alternative despite the difference in the actual content for each part. In my case I have some text content and an rfc822 context so I figure I'm typing the thing correctly since Mail.app under OSX displays the rfc822 inline but the phone's Mail client simply complains.

Just wanted to echo this post. Given that a lot I people keep on sending multipart/mixed messages, I have to say that simply not displaying them is very disappointing.
The problem is that there are no alternatives whatsoever. Ok mail.app does not support it, but at least let the user download the source. I had my electronic tickets sent to me in such a message and had to figure out how the henk and when I can get my fligt having a dumb mail.app telling me that it won't download the rest. Come on!!! That's so frustrating.
In my experience about 10% of mails are multipart mixed. Do you see me telling to my customers to use another mail programme? Please improve this one.

  • P55 CD-53 Memory mixing supported

Is it possible to mix 2 different speed DDR3 kits ?
    Somthing like this:
    DIMM1 & 3:
    1333 MHz 9-9-9-24
    DIMM2 & 4:
    1066MHz 7-7-7-20

It may or may not work which means it can work just fine but it could also happen that will be facing major stability problems. There is no answer to this.  Test and see is the best answer anybody can give to you.

  • Docky skin in gnome-do not supported in xfce?

I just installed gnome-do on xfce and it won't let me use the docky skin. The default composition in xfce is enabled, is there anything else that needs to be done? Or do I need to be running compiz?

    Bump.
I switched to compiz and Do still doesn't show the Docky skin as an option. I'm going to try copy the skin over from ubuntu and see if it works like that.
EDIT: I can't find anything skin related anywhere in my Ubuntu install. I could always use Docky and Do separately but that's a waste of resources.

  • OSS -call / Support "questionary"??

I have experienced a VERY good support from the TDMS people in the past, basically it's been one of the best experiences I had since I am working with SAP software as a whole.
On the last call I was suddenly urged to fill out a "questionary" with questions. that can all be answered by having a (quick!) look in the system.  Does anyone know why this is now all of a sudden necessary? Things like "package type" and "sender and receiver system", "project name" etc. - since when is it's no more enough to check the package ID? With a single transaction all that data can be viewed if someone loggs on...
    Markus

    > It's a nice suggestion. By knowing the packageID & system details of central system, one can get the  'Sender , receiver details'.
...it worked like that in the last 24 months - and it worked very good.
    > In some cases one needs to login only to either the receiver or to the sender systems. This questionnair makes the information readily available and one need not login to the central system for these system details. This is specially helpful when the connection to the central system is not available.
In my opinion this is a waste of time. Especially if the connection is available, and is open and the access data is maintained. We haven't had any case where someone did not want to logon to the central system first. If it becomes necessary to provide that data -yes - but not in the first place. However, this is just my opinion.

  • [SOLVED]Wifi sharing over ethernet cable doesn't work Gnome 3.16.1

Hi I wanted to share my Wifi from my laptop to another Pc via ethernet cable. On Gnome versions older than 3.14, that was pretty simple. Now I tried this solution and this.
None works. I know my cable works as it worked perfectly on previously installed Arch Linux systems and I tested just now on my Windows 7 system. Just on my Gnome 3.16 system it doesn't.
    Any solution for this ?

Someone who uses gnome MAY pop in, but really this is an issue with how gnome works (and when) so you may have to go to them (gnome's official support outlet) to get answers as to why its not working.... I do seem to remember seeing a post very similar to this with gnome, so maybe its some kind of bug right now? Perhaps check their bug reports?
Fortunately, all its likely doing is settings things up for you... And you can do that yourself. Check out the wiki (should be step number one when trying to get ANYTHING to work with arch), https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Internet_sharing

  • Gnome won't start after update

Hey, so after I've updated gnome to 3.14 it refuses to start. The moment I get past the login screen (that works - I use lightdm), gnome will just tell me that "something has gone wrong" and it won't launch the session. For the past two hours or so I've been trying to identify the issue with no good results. What I think might be relevant is that I use the catalyst driver and also this part of journalctl -e /usr/bin/gnome-shell:

Same problem here, and I think that it's all Catalyst fault.
Many people are reporting GNOME 3.14 / Catalyst compatibility issue in AMD Bar & Grill thread (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57084&p=272) and I totally agree with Vi0l0 (unofficial Catalyst packages maintainer):
Vi0l0 wrote:As for the GNOME 3.14 - wish I have more time to look at this closer, I catched problems with GNOME latelly (but before 3.14) - it started to crash before start - I spent not much time on it, but didn't find solution. Fixing it is not that important for me right now, since im planning to install arch on btrfs 2xSSD smile. Its just the time... Wish I had some kind of clone of myself with shared awareness tongue.
But anyhow I think that GNOME 3.14 support could be real problem atm (at least with unmodified gnome packages), afaik 3.14 is really close to wayland and catalyst doesn't even have egl.
EDIT: if confirmed seems to be a display manager issue:
Vi0L0 wrote:BTW I installed new arch on new drives, and all seems to work fine, GDM didn't start so I used KDM. All problems are gone and GNOME 3.14 works pretty nice.

I'm not sure you can do that in gnome-mplayer...  I think you can add these keys for mplayer in your ~/.mplayer/input.conf file but you would have to look that up.
