Gnome over SSH Painfully slow

Hello all!
Since recently upgrading to Tarantella 4, and have found that Gnome sessions
over SSH to Redhat ES3 systems have become extremely slow. We can compare
this performance change with Tarantella 3.42 because we have one of our
original array members with exactly the same ens configuration as our new
TTA4 array.
Would someone mind helping me with this?
Kind thanks in advance!
Paul

Actually, this problem crashes the server.
Can anyone help me with this? Have there been any changes to the way
Tarantella connects to a XWindows server over SSH?
Thanks

  • Qt applications over ssh tunnel: very slow redrawing

Regularly I do not use many Qt applications, mostly Skype. I run it over ssh tunnel from another computer within the same local network for long time. After recent system update I noticed it became very slow refreshing its graphics. I checked several Gtk and Qt applications and found that Gtk ones work almost with the "native" speed, while Qt ones with that damn slow redrawing...
I tried ssh with both "ForwardX11" and "ForwardX11Trusted" - there is no difference. I'm using no DE with xmonad WM (tried TWM - no difference either) in x86_64 box.
    Any directions/advices/ideas?
    Thanks!

  • Mac painfully slow over mixed network SMB/CIFS

I am using a Mac mini over a mixed office network. Several network operations are painfully slow. I posted a previous topic when I was using my G5 over the same network. Nothing has been resolved. G5, Mac mini or any Mac are slow over the network.
-photo previews take at least 2 minutes each to view while on a PC the whole drive of previews are instantly seen.
    - Entourage common network calendar takes 5-10 minutes to view/update while the same common calender on a PC takes a few short seconds.
    - Browsing folders on network drives is slow.
    - Transfering files is slow
Basically any work done over the network from the Mac is tediously slow. Burning CD's and hand carry the files to other offices would be faster. The PC's instead all work fine over the network.

This looks very interesting and worth looking into. I've got the info in the hands of our net administrator.
I am making progress. I switched the mac mini from ethernet to airport. That has helped dramatically. A folder of 175 mb that was going to take hours and hours to copy to my local drive (I finally gave up) only took about 2-3 minutes over wireless. Previews of photos now happen in a few short seconds. The Entourage common calendar still takes a while to upload but that's probably an Entourage issue.
Our network administrator is going to string new cable to my office and we'll check the switching as well.
Thanks everyone for your continued help as we solve this issue and rescue the Mac's reputation in a windows environment.
This sounds alot like a duplexing issue, whereby
your macs are connecting eventually to a switch, that
isn't properly auto-negotiating your ethernet speed.
You can try going into the Network preferences and
forcing your mac to either 100 full duplex or 100
half duplex and do some testing. Some Bay
Network and Cisco switches must be set (if they are
managed switches) for fastpath operation where they
will autonegotiate better with equipment like our
Broadcom manufactured network interface cards. I
had the same issue at home with a Netgear switch, I
replaced it with a Dell gigabit switch and the
    problem went away.

  • Time Capsule Painfully slow internet over wireless (not so over ethernet)

I dont know what it is, but when I use the TC over wireless, it is over 10 times slower than if I just stick an ethernet cable in my macbook. I get 50k/sec TOPS over wireless. I get 600-2MB/sec over the ethernet.
Im seriously using an ethernet cable right now because I cant stand it.
I have restarted the thing 50 times now. (modem too)
I have an N capable macbook.
I have time machine TURNED OFF
I have tried all different frequencies.
It is not just my macbook, but every wireless device on the system.
I had an N basestation I replaced, it was super fast.
My ethernet and airport settings are identical.
I have tried. all settings of B,G,N 2.4 and 5ghz.
I have tried interference robustness on and off.
It is not the internet going to it, and it is not the environment it is in as It is sitting in the exact same place my N base station was in.
I seriously hate this thing right now... And I am as big of an apple fan as they come.
    Please help me!

I unplugged it again and plugged it back in again... and it seems to have worked.
Why it didnt before, and how long this will last is anyones guess.
I just wish it was as reliable as my previous N base station.

  • Painfully slow wireless connection with Time Capsule

I have recently bought and changed over my home wireless to a Time Capsule 2TB, which I wanted for both the backup and the ease in home networking. I have set up the wireless network and since day one it has been painfully slow! I have created two wireless networks, one for 2.4GHz and the other for 5GHz. I have been reading all over the web and boards but to no avail.  Any suggestions? I am about to give up on the time capsule completely! I couldn't even download my podcast tonight.
    Help!

Firstly plug in directly by ethernet to be sure there isn't a network issue on wan side.
Are you testing on multiple computers .. Mac and/or PC?? Which ones. and what network cards are being used?
Try and remove anything that uses G wireless and throw away any B wireless. It will not work together with N even if it is an option.
Turn off the guest network if you have it on.
Have you used a wireless analyser like kismac or inssider for pc? Find the free channels and set the wireless to that. Use no security at first to test.. briefly.. and then select wpa2 personal. Is there any difference?
Do you have another wireless router running?? Were you using a different wireless router for comparison?

  • Safari painfully slow on new Mac Mini

I know there have been a number of threads on this topic and I have tried all of the tricks listed but Safari is still painfully slow to load web pages. I have tested my internet connection and it is fine. The real interesting thing here is that when I boot up under Windows (using Boot Camp) web pages load blazingly fast under IE, so it seems unlikely that I have a hardware problem. I have also tried Firefox with similar results. I love this new machine but I am pulling my hair out over its browsing performance.
    Anyone have a (new) thought?

Please try a test account to see how Safari works
there, if you do not have an other user account,
Go to System preferences ->Accounts ->Login Options
Tried this and believe it or not the problem was worse!
se the [+] to create one, you can later use [-] to
    delete/remove the account.
Do you use a third party Firewall or one on your
    router ?
    No on both accounts
Do you use DHCP Lease ?
Yes, I hit the "renew lease" button which had no effect
In the Network ->TCP/IP tab do you have DNS # values
    entered in the
    DNS Servers box.
    No entries in the DNS
Proxies tab, do you have any proxies selected ? if
Yes how does Safari surf with out it ?
    No proxies selected
Let us know what your findings are.
    Eme: )
I am going to try FireFox again and see if there are any things I can tweak that make it bearable.
    Thanks, Richard

  • Acrobat 9 Pro: Printing Menu Painfully Slow

Hi folks, new here and first post... I'm having problems with my Adobe Pro V9.  When I click the print icon, or select print, the dialogue box for the print menu is painfully slow to come up.  Even on small size, low resolution documents it can take over 60 secs for the print dialogue screen to come up.
Does anyone know why this is the case? Can and how can it be fixed?
One of the IT guys here gave me a big load of tosh about why it does this but I know from experience that it has got worse since first install and that some documents spool up really quickly.  Feedback and advice much appreciated.

I have had some issues, but nothing as bad as you. It may be that your file has a lot of graphics or such.
There appears to be a lot of preprocessing going on before the actual print that becomes the problem.

  • Kodo 2.3.0 is painfully slow

Kodo 2.3.0 is painfully slow with Oracle database. It is doing left joins
repeatable reading the same data over and over again. It is so slow that it
is virtually impossible to use. kodo 2.2.x was lightning fast to compare
    with 2.3

    Alienware (2) Dual Core Opteron 285 2.61GHz
    8 megs ram
    Raid 0
    Win 7 Ultimate - 64
    NVidia GeForce GTX 260
    [Presentation workstation]
    Quadcore Dell - Vista Ulltimate
    Raid 0
    [Production workstation]
Quadcore Dell XPS 710 - Win XP Pro
    Raid 0
All three workstations are running Lightroom 3.  All are running LR3 with unacceptably slow performance when compared to LR 2.7.
I am putting LR 2.7 back on all three workstations for actual production work. A typical wedding has 3-5 thousand images to process.  This has to be done quickly.  LR 2.7 is very stable on all my systems and runs much faster than any other version of LR I have had.
LR 3.0 looks to be a fantastic program.  BUT, version 3.0 is not ready for handling real world work flow at this time.  I am looking forward to version 3.1.

  • PAINFULLY slow- can take 4 min to infinity to change tabs!

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro (original unibody MBP) that's running PAINFULLY slow! I used to be able to run 2 browsers with 15 tabs each, Photoshop, and word all at once. Over the last couple months, I can have as little as a browser with a few tabs and it grinds to a halt. I can simply click on a tab, or on a drop down menu, and I'll get the spinning beach ball for 4 or 5 minutes. Even cmd-opt-esc is unresponsive. Then, minutes later, it'll instantly execute anything I commanded over the last several minutes.  Firefox seems to be the worst offender, but it can happen no matter what's running.  It can happen immediately after rebooting, too (I used to only have to reboot every few weeks, now it's several times per day)
CPU load is 98% idle after it catches up, but once it catches up and the graph refreshes and I can see it was about 60% user load and 15% system while it was choking on the monumental task of opening the "File" drop-down menu
There are 482 threads and 129 processes.
This is the original unibody Mac with 2.4 ghz core 2 duo. It's been upgraded with 4GB of ram (2.7 used) and a 1TB hard drive.  I did those upgrades 2 years ago and they've worked fine until recently.  Clicking  "get info" on the HD says 333 GB are free, but under "about this mac" it says 121 GB are free and 211 are used for "backup".  I'm running OS-X 10.9.2 and it says there are no updates to install.
    I've reset system manager
    I've reset PRAM
    I've fixed disk permissions.
    No effect
I know I don't have the speediest machine, but even a mid-80's mac could smoothly handle a drop-down menu, and this is a recent problem.  I'm at a loss here, guys. Any idea? My computer is quickly becoming unusable!

  • Usually very fast, Sometimes painfully slow.  Why?

There probably is no simple answer to this, but I'll ask anyway.
I am test driving Aperture 2.0.1 and so far like it a lot. But every now and then, on particular photos, it seems to slow to a crawl. For example, I have one photo that I shot a couple of days ago that has a stone building and a tree (with lots of thin twigs and no leaves) in front of it. This photo is just plain painful to work on -- all adjustments are slow, the loupe takes a couple seconds to open and can't be moved smoothly (it seems to jump erratically, so it's even hard to move it slowly), and even if I zoom to 100% I can't move around in the photo (using the little red navigation box in the navigation overlay) without similar erratic behavior. Even Quick Preview mode is slow!
The odd thing is that with the majority of my photos everything is very quick. Using the loupe feels almost like moving a real, physical loupe over a real photo -- it's that fast. There are just a few images that seem to cause this painful slowness.
So now the question -- is there a reason for this, and a cure? The best explanation I can think of is that this photo, and a few others, has so many little details in it (the roughness of the stone, and the randomness of the many thin twigs on the tree) that it's straining Aperture's raw conversion to its limits. But if that were it, I'd think that Quick Preview would have worked OK. And while I hate to say it (because this is an honest question, not a thinly veiled jab at Aperture), Lightroom doesn't seem to have any problem with this photo.
Other particulars -- I'm using a Nikon D50, and the photo was shot in raw. I've tried quitting Aperture and restarting it, logging out and back on, and even restarting the computer.

I think I have tracked the problem down -- it's highlights and shadows. If I turn that adjustment off everything works fine. I went back and looked at some other images and sure enough, if I turn on highlights & shadows the performance bogs down considerably. It's more pronounced on the particular photo I wrote about yesterday -- until that photo it was just a curiosity and I never made the connection, but this one was so bad that I was forced to check it out further.

  • [vim] has('x11') has('clipboard') over ssh, pb copy/cut in vim

    Hello
I experiment some problem with vim on my server.
On my laptop and my server I have vim 7.2.266-1
    :echo has('x11') && has('clipboard')
It return 1 on my laptop (x86_64) (gnome-terminal) but on the server (i686) (over ssh with gnome-terminal) it return 0.
    :-S
    I don't understand ...
I would like to know what cause this behaviour and maybe how to enable x11 and clipboard in vim on my server...
    Could you help me please

X11 and clipboard are run locally.  I do not know of a nice way to do what you want.  I agree, reaching for the mouse when selecting/paste text is cumbersome.

  • Wi-fi painfully slow on macbook pro in OSX 10.8.2

I have a Mac Book pro and over the last two days my internet has turned painfully slow on wifi - i havent loaded any new programmes and Speedtest shows no problems, still 37mbps on fiber broadband, my iPhone and PC are fine on the same wireless connection and Ethernet is perfect!!
I have tried resetting Safari and Firefox in preferences, clearing history and cookies, resetting DHCP, even using the setting 8.8.8.8. DNS server, and changing wireless channels, resetting the router, as well as running MacScan. I see people talking about turning off IPv6 but im on OS X 10.8.2 and off is not an option I have Automatic, manual and Link-manual only, i have tried all these to no joy still web pages just take ages to load :-( Any ideas?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I tried to update the latest software update for my MacBook pro (which was on 10/12) and after it started to update it restarted like normal but when it started back up it was running painfully slow and none oft programs will open. They all quit unexpectal

I tried to update the latest software update for my MacBook pro (which was on 10/12) and after it started to update it restarted like normal but when it started back up it was running painfully slow and none oft programs will open. They all quit unexpectedly. iTunes microsoft word all of them quit unexpectedly. Help!

Exact same problem with my 2010 MBP 2.4ghz 4gb ram 10.6.8. iTunes said update was needed, Software Update ran with various updates including a security update, truthfully didn't pay much attention, I always install the Apple updates. After the restart it took 3-4 times longer than normal to get to the login screen, same to get to the desktop but I'm familiar with that occurring on update restarts. Unfortunately it got worse from there. Performed a full shutdown and startup. Same long boot.  After the desktop finally loads every mouse button press received a 2 minute beachball. I use menu-meters and both processors are under 10%. Waited a few minutes for disk utilities to launch, repair permissions estimates 3 hours for a typical <10 minute process. Activity monitor shows nothing over 10% CPU most of the time however ReportCrash pops to the top often. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW zero problems until this update.

  • Pages 4.1 is so painfully slow

Pages '09 4.1 is so painfully slow - it takes over my entire computer and everything just drags.... I need this app for my business but I don't know what to do. I am mostly touching up photographs using the Alpha Mask.   I absolutely cannot have iPhoto and Pages open at the same time.  I end up having to shut everything down in order for it to work.  I am in version Mac OSX 10.7.2

2 Gb is not much, 4gb is much more comfortable and best to max it out for your model, RAM is cheap.
Lion is more demanding and slower than Snow Leopard.
It sounds like you have an iMac 20" early 2008. Installation is very easy:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423#2
Apple reports that you can add up to 4Gb (2x2) of RAM but you can go to 6Gb.
    You need 2GB + 4GB Kit DDR2 SODIMM PC2-6400 800Mhz Unbuffered Non ECC
Make sure you tell the supplier it is for the Mac, which is quite picky.
Double check I have identified your Mac correctly:
    Menu > Apple > About this Mac > More Info… > Hardware > Model Identifier: iMac 8,1
