Gnome panel issue in solaris 10 - help

Hello ,
I have here solaris 10 (137111-01) on sunblade 1500 machine ( total 50 machines). There is a strange problem appearing since this week, when a user logs into JDE(gnome DE) then users gets logged in but gnome-panel does not show anything. If PID for gnome-panel is killed, gnome-panel restarts but again it is blank ( grayed out)
The above issue new and only for nis+ users whose home directories get auto mounted from solaris nfs servers. Let me say here that it worked fine until now for these nis+ users but now. They are forced to use common desktop env which they don't like.
Local user such as root or any other local use gets the gnome-panel with start menu and everything works fine for it.
I have tried restarting nis+ services as well as nfs.server service and rebooting the nis+ clients which have the issue but still hasn't helped it.
Somehow I managed to set panel preference to Normal (from Restart) and then killed the Panel PID. Started with truss,
Here is the truss o/p.
http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=thvekw7VAnother thing observed is when the nis+ user logs into these workstations, they can't do ssh to any machine , it hangs and CTRL C also doesn't kill it. They have to close the terminal itself to kill it.
Gnome -panel grayed out -screen shot : http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/5835/gnomepanel.jpg

I am experiancing the same issue. User homes are on nfs automount. No NIS is set up currently. The problem appeared after the home directories were mounted with nfs3. Previously they were mounted as nfs4. But even newly created users get empty gnome panel.

  • Minor gaim gnome-panel issue?

new to arch.  installed gaim and it is working fine, but the taskbar entry for gaim does not highlight/change color or whatever when a new message is sent.  it is not a big deal because i can see a new msg icon in the systray of course, but any idea how to get the normal panel behavior to work like it has in every other distro i have used?  thanks.  really enjoying the transition to arch.

stonecrest wrote:You need to enable the gaim plugin to do it, I forget the name offhand..
You were right.  I found the plugin and had to set Window Manager = urgent.  Odd.   Never used that plugin before in the past, but whatever does the job!!!

  • Lost my gnome panel in solaris 10, x86 need help !

Lost my gnome panel on solaris 10 x86 box and can't understand why.
Can anyone help me out to restore my panel ?
    Thanks
    Richie

The quick way would be to just rm all of the files in your home directory and then log out and back in again. A more convenient method would be to move the contents of your home directory somewhere else and then log out and back in again and then copy the files back so you don't have to re-customize it.

  • Migration from Solaris 9/GNOME 2.0 to Solaris 10/JDS 3

    Hi,
I am not sure whether this is an appropriate forum to post this question
but I first tried the "Sun Java Desktop System Support Forums" but was t
old that they do not cover the Sun supplied JDS .
We are in the process to migrate our workstations from Solaris 9/Gnome 2.0
to Solaris 10 with JDS 3. There are some migration issues which came
up after the first trial installations. So far I could not find any solutions to
    them.
Many of our users currently have a panel with various launchers on the
top of the screen. This panel disappears when a user logs in under
JDS 3. Is there a way to migrate these panels so that they appear
under JDS3 in the same way as under GNOME 2.0?
The workspace configuration is lost when moving from GNOME 2.0
to JDS 3.0. The number of workspaces is reset to 4 and the names
vanish. Can this configuration be copied over to JDS 3?
    Many thanks for any hints.
    Regards,
    Matthias Ernst

Personally I think JDS3 is a bit awkward and
certainly not as nice to use as Gnome2. I was
disappointed to see the CDE apps menu has disappeared
too, I had to figure out where certain apps are on
the HDD, something I never thought to do in the past.
Specifically I was looking for SMC, which I
    eventually found in /usr/sadm/bin/smc.
I was under the impression from Sun's own
documentation, that Gnome would be the replacement
for CDE, I figured they'd included it with latter
Solaris9 installs as a stop gap. I also noticed that
    when I installed Solaris10, I saw a message box
mention KDE a few times so I expected to see an
option for KDE as well. Dunno if it's hidden away
somewhere but I'd sure like to know what it was all
about.I wonder whether one can get rid of some of the JDS stuff and just use the GNOME part. I never understood why so many of the desktop environments try to immitate Windows even to the extent that there is a launch (aka start) button.

  • [Solved] nm-applet not appearing in gnome panel

    Hi all.
I recently replaced my wired network card with a wireless one.
I then followed the instructions at the following pages to get the correct software installed:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … orkManager
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager
My only problem now is that nm-applet does not appear in the gnome panel.
Both nm-applet and networkmanager are running though, but the network is not up.
If I then kill nm-applet and run it from the command line, it the creates the icon in gnome-panel and automatically connects to my wireless network.
I've looked through all the related posts but I can't find anything that helps.
I've tried to make my DAEMONS section of rc.conf as simple as possible:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng netfs crond dbus networkmanager alsa)
    but that didn't help either.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
As a side note I have a another machine with exactly the same wireless card with a fresh install and it works perfectly with regards to nm-applet.
Perhaps it's a config setting that is causing the problem?

  • [SOLVED] update removed menu items in lxpanel menu & in gnome-panel

when i start gnome-panel, the 'applications' drop down is empty, and 'system' no longer contains the 'administration' and 'preferences' items.
in lxpanel, the menu only shows 'run' and 'logout'.
i wanted to see if alacarte still showed things, so i ran alacarte from a terminal (which normally works)...
    [chris: ~]$ alacarte
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 36, in <module>

    parser.Parse("", True)
xml.parsers.expat.ExpatError: no element found: line 1, column 0
naturally, starting alacarte by right clicking on gnome-menu -> edit menus also does nothing.
i looked at /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py with cat, and there is nothing super-obviously wrong with the script.
    also:
    [chris: ~]$ ls /usr/share/applications
    abiword.desktop
    alacarte.desktop
    aldm-gui.desktop
    assistant.desktop
    at-properties.desktop
    avahi-discover.desktop
    banshee-1-audiocd.desktop
    banshee-1.desktop
    banshee-1-media-player.desktop
    baobab.desktop
    *and so on*
    so those didn't vanish.
    any ideas?

so i saw this error message....
** (gnome-panel:4408): WARNING **: Error loading menu layout from "/home/chris/.config/menus/settings.menu": Error on line 1 char 1: Document was empty or contained only whitespace
the file was empty. and what do we do with broken config files in ~? why, we hide them, of course!
    [chris: ~/.config/menus]$ mv settings.menu settings.menubackup
now gnome-panel works, but alacarte (menu editor) and lxpanel's menu is still busted.
now that i am getting somewhere, im gonna keep posting as i trace this down so others that may come across this same issue can benefit.
edit: renamed ~/.config/menus/lxde-applications.menu to .menubackup and restarted lxpanel, it works now.
    edit2:
    alacarte is giving me this...
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/chris/.config/menus/applications.menu'
and sure enough, pcmanfm told me that the file belonged to root.
sudo pcmanfm, navigated to that file, right click -> properties -> permissions -> changed owner to chris and group to users.
    alacarte works now, too.
i think im going to go through and recursively make everything in each ~ folder belong to the username it should just in case permissions got jumbled somewhere/anywhere else.
just so i know: did this happen to anyone else that updated within the last 24 hours or so?
(so i can learn if it was something *I* did, or if it was something that came with the *update*)

  • Gnome panel foot logo--arch logo

it used to be that if you wanted your gnome panel to have the arch logo rather than the foot logo you would replace /opt/gnome/share/piximaps/gnome-logo-icon-transparent.png with the archlogo, this is no longer the case. (as of gnome 2.16 afaik) can anyone help me on this. I am getting a little sick of the foot

  • Gnome panel 3.2 - I am not able to see clock and date well

    Hello all,
I am using Gnome in fallback -mode. I upgraded my gnome-panel to version 3.2 and after upgrading I am not able to see date and time information well. This information have shown a dark grey color, which is very difficult to see because background is black. If I put my mouse cursor on the time panel I am able to see infromation because background changes from black to white (timebox get activated). Is there any way to change font/foreground colour from grey to white? It is very irritating put mouse cursor on the date everytime when I want to see time.  I tried to downgrade panel back to 3.0 version, but after that I wasn't able to see panel at the all.

  • [solved] nm-applet does not show up in Gnome panel

    Hi all,
I installed networkmanager, network-manager-applet and dbus this afternoon. As well as a fresh install of Gnome. This is all done on my laptop, which my wife wants to use now and then. I always set up the network CLI, but now I will need a nice flashy applet in the Gnome panel.
I managed to run the network-connection-editor as root, and got the network up.
I had some dbus problems when I tried launching nm-applet, but fixed it with a dbus-hack I found in some other thread. But when I now launch nm-applet, it says that there allready is an instance running of nm-applet.
I guess it should show up in the panel, if it is. But I don't see anything there... Do you have any ideas of what I forgot to install/configure/check.
    Thanks,
    jocom

There have been a couple similar posts recently. I'm not using Gnome anymore or networkmanager, so I don't know if there's a problem with it or not. If I remember correctly I had to install gnome-panel-bonobo, and I believe python-notify and gksu too. You can do a search on the wiki for networkmanager, there is a page for it that explains the configuration changes you'll need to make. Hope it helps.

I dug up an old applet I had written for Cinnamon (based on another applet by Tjaart van der Walt), and upgraded it to work with Gnome 3.12
For some reason, I am not able to submit it to the AUR.
^^Mods: please help if possible - I keep getting a "Invalid name: only lowercase letters are allowed". error when I am trying to submit the tarball linked below.
download link to the tarball, in case anyone wants to use it: https://app.box.com/s/d9wsu6u8jkcknl0r4z6x

  • Gnome-panel's clock is broken

My gnome-panel has been unstable as of late, and my primary suspect is the clock.  Whenever I run "killall gnome-panel", almost everything in gnome-panel fixes itself except for the clock.  I'm not sure what's wrong with it.  I don't use evolution, so I doubt that's the problem.  I also attempted to fix the timezone on /etc/rc.conf, but to no avail.  Might there be a quick a fix I somehow skimmed over while search this forum?
    Thanks for the help.

Not sure what the default is supposed to look like, but here's the configuration.

  • Gnome-panel acting a little strange.

perhaps this should be under the pacman boards, but i'm not exactly sure when the issue started happening, as i've been off and on this past week.
gnome-panel, on the top of the screen has been acting strangely. the application option does nothing; it acts as if it is being pressed and then no menu pulls down. also, under the system option, i'm missing many of them, and see neither administration nor preferences. additionally, all of my icons are gone - i can add them back, but i'd rather know why they left.
if i open a panel from cli as root, it seems to be my old panel complete with working pull downs as well as all the options. i also have three profiles on my computer, and two work perfectly.
so yeah, that's about all i can really say for now. anyone have any ideas?

    Hey there,
For kick's why not make a copy of current gnome settings and then let gnome re-create files.  My guess is gnome f'd up something for your user.

  • [GNOME] Panel Items Will Not Stay Arranged

For some odd reason or another, the items on the GNOME panels will occasionally stray from the arrangements they were put into during a prior session.  I have tried locking all of the items to the panels, but every now and then, I will log in to find that a few panel items have once again rearranged themselves.  On a similar note, the notification tray will expand itself to allow a new icon to spawn, but will not always shrink once the icon has been destroyed, leaving unsightly gaps between other items.
Is this an issue for other GNOME users, and are there any remedies to these issues?

I experience this when is switch to a low resolution, e. g. by starting a game. Gnome-Panel then rearranges fixed items because itself scales to the lower resolution. There is currently no fix for that.
