Gnome-panel's clock is broken

My gnome-panel has been unstable as of late, and my primary suspect is the clock.  Whenever I run "killall gnome-panel", almost everything in gnome-panel fixes itself except for the clock.  I'm not sure what's wrong with it.  I don't use evolution, so I doubt that's the problem.  I also attempted to fix the timezone on /etc/rc.conf, but to no avail.  Might there be a quick a fix I somehow skimmed over while search this forum?
Thanks for the help.

Not sure what the default is supposed to look like, but here's the configuration.

  • Gnome-panel and/or more broken? solved

    Hi there,
Just to the lead up, I was mounting my school's server's smb drives. I was also experimenting all day getting SSH and SAMBA working to communicate with my old desktop I set up in my room to act as a server. So I was unmounting these network drives (school and server), when all the gnome-panel stuff frozen. AWN was fully functional, as were all the open windows and the desktop. But nothing on the panel worked, menu, windowlist, cpufreq, clock, etc, it was all frozen. I ctrl+alt+backapaced and logged in, great, now theres no panel at all, reboot with the same problem. The panel appeared after around 7 minutes of downtime. During this downtime of the panel, I also could not use alt+F2 run, which did pop up when the panel popped up. Also after the panel popped up, gedit takes way longer than normal to start up.
Any ideas as to what is going on here?
EDIT: Rebooted several times with the same problem of insanely slow start up of the panel, reinstalled all gnome+gnome-extra packages and everything seems to be back to normal for now.

You can turn things off mostly in the applications themself. I for example have the following:
    - Bluetooth Icon (turn on / off in Bluetooth Preferences)
    - Display Icon (turn on / off in Display)
    - Bettery Icon (turn on / off in Power Management)
    - NetworkManager (shows icon by default, I don't know of another way to run this).
    Volume Applet (right-click to remove)
In Preferences - Startup Applications you can specify which programs to run, but I don't think this affects the tray icons.

  • Gnome panel 3.2 - I am not able to see clock and date well

    Hello all,
I am using Gnome in fallback -mode. I upgraded my gnome-panel to version 3.2 and after upgrading I am not able to see date and time information well. This information have shown a dark grey color, which is very difficult to see because background is black. If I put my mouse cursor on the time panel I am able to see infromation because background changes from black to white (timebox get activated). Is there any way to change font/foreground colour from grey to white? It is very irritating put mouse cursor on the date everytime when I want to see time.  I tried to downgrade panel back to 3.0 version, but after that I wasn't able to see panel at the all.

  • [SOLVED] update removed menu items in lxpanel menu & in gnome-panel

when i start gnome-panel, the 'applications' drop down is empty, and 'system' no longer contains the 'administration' and 'preferences' items.
in lxpanel, the menu only shows 'run' and 'logout'.
i wanted to see if alacarte still showed things, so i ran alacarte from a terminal (which normally works)...
    [chris: ~]$ alacarte
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 36, in <module>
    main()
File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 32, in main

    result = builder.parseFile(fp)
File "/usr/lib/python2.6/xml/dom/expatbuilder.py", line 211, in parseFile
    parser.Parse("", True)
xml.parsers.expat.ExpatError: no element found: line 1, column 0
naturally, starting alacarte by right clicking on gnome-menu -> edit menus also does nothing.
i looked at /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py with cat, and there is nothing super-obviously wrong with the script.
    also:
    [chris: ~]$ ls /usr/share/applications
    abiword.desktop
    alacarte.desktop
    aldm-gui.desktop
    assistant.desktop
    at-properties.desktop
    avahi-discover.desktop
    banshee-1-audiocd.desktop
    banshee-1.desktop
    banshee-1-media-player.desktop
    baobab.desktop
    *and so on*
    so those didn't vanish.
    any ideas?

so i saw this error message....
** (gnome-panel:4408): WARNING **: Error loading menu layout from "/home/chris/.config/menus/settings.menu": Error on line 1 char 1: Document was empty or contained only whitespace
the file was empty. and what do we do with broken config files in ~? why, we hide them, of course!
    [chris: ~/.config/menus]$ mv settings.menu settings.menubackup
now gnome-panel works, but alacarte (menu editor) and lxpanel's menu is still busted.
now that i am getting somewhere, im gonna keep posting as i trace this down so others that may come across this same issue can benefit.
edit: renamed ~/.config/menus/lxde-applications.menu to .menubackup and restarted lxpanel, it works now.
    edit2:
    alacarte is giving me this...
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/chris/.config/menus/applications.menu'
and sure enough, pcmanfm told me that the file belonged to root.
sudo pcmanfm, navigated to that file, right click -> properties -> permissions -> changed owner to chris and group to users.
    alacarte works now, too.
i think im going to go through and recursively make everything in each ~ folder belong to the username it should just in case permissions got jumbled somewhere/anywhere else.
just so i know: did this happen to anyone else that updated within the last 24 hours or so?
(so i can learn if it was something *I* did, or if it was something that came with the *update*)

  • Gnome panel preferences on file system somewhere

I've been wanting to clone my gnome panels to another user.  I'm sure the info for which widgets, clocks, etc. is stored somewhere in ~ but I have idea where.  Does anyone?

its in ~/.gconf/apps/panel. don't know if you can just copy the directory over though. just google 'how to use gconf' or something

  • Openbox + Gnome-Panel

I've been tinkering around with openbox, fluxbox, pypanel, etc, trying to find the perfect WM setup. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I'm slow in making decisions as I have to play with everything to my satisfaction before making a choice. I've been a Gnome user for the past year and a half, since that's what I started with in Ubuntu.
One of the possibilities I threw around for a while was using Openbox with Gnome Panel. I eventually decided against it, but it occurred to me that I've never seen nor heard of anyone using OB with gnome-panel, although it is obviously feasible.
So, just curious, anyone out there use that combination?

The reason you don't see many screenshots of Openbox with gnome-panel is because gnome-panel is a resource hog that consumes upwards of 30MB of RAM--and that's without applets.  Add a bunch of applets to it and you'll see it increase further.
As has been commented here, many users run Openbox/GNOME. This is basically a full GNOME session, except that the Metacity window manager is replaced by Openbox.
At any rate, try it for yourself...you might like it.  Then again, if you're a speed/minimalist perfectionist, I can guarantee there are faster & lighter solutions, such as:
    * Pypanel
    * Tint
    * Visibility
Then there's the seemingly less obvious choice of running no panel at all, which is what I do when I run Openbox.  After all, it includes a desktop managing menu by default--all that's missing is a clock and a system try (ala conky/trayer).

  • [Solved] nm-applet not appearing in gnome panel

    Hi all.
I recently replaced my wired network card with a wireless one.
I then followed the instructions at the following pages to get the correct software installed:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … orkManager
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager
My only problem now is that nm-applet does not appear in the gnome panel.
Both nm-applet and networkmanager are running though, but the network is not up.
If I then kill nm-applet and run it from the command line, it the creates the icon in gnome-panel and automatically connects to my wireless network.
I've looked through all the related posts but I can't find anything that helps.
I've tried to make my DAEMONS section of rc.conf as simple as possible:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng netfs crond dbus networkmanager alsa)
    but that didn't help either.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
As a side note I have a another machine with exactly the same wireless card with a fresh install and it works perfectly with regards to nm-applet.
Perhaps it's a config setting that is causing the problem?

Well since upgrading to gnome 3, I no longer have this problem so setting to solved.

  • Gnome-panel always crashes after update

Everytime, and yes i mean everytime I run a "pacman -Syu" and reboot, gnome-panel just crashes upon loading. If I kill it and restart the panel, it does the same thing. The only way to resolve this is to run "gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel" which resets it back to default (since I customize the panel).
Anyone experienced this before and know a fix?
edit: When I say crash, I mean I can't click on anything on the panel, it's completely unresponsive. I used to have the deskbar. Most of the times, half the panel doesn't load.

Probably should, but those two directories weren't there on my clean install.  I just created .themes and .icons and restarted the application, and it worked.  (Saw the bug report)
...and the fix has already been released per bugzilla.

  • Lost my gnome panel in solaris 10, x86 need help !

Lost my gnome panel on solaris 10 x86 box and can't understand why.
Can anyone help me out to restore my panel ?
    Thanks
    Richie

The quick way would be to just rm all of the files in your home directory and then log out and back in again. A more convenient method would be to move the contents of your home directory somewhere else and then log out and back in again and then copy the files back so you don't have to re-customize it.

  • Gnome panel issue in solaris 10 - help

    Hello ,
I have here solaris 10 (137111-01) on sunblade 1500 machine ( total 50 machines). There is a strange problem appearing since this week, when a user logs into JDE(gnome DE) then users gets logged in but gnome-panel does not show anything. If PID for gnome-panel is killed, gnome-panel restarts but again it is blank ( grayed out)
The above issue new and only for nis+ users whose home directories get auto mounted from solaris nfs servers. Let me say here that it worked fine until now for these nis+ users but now. They are forced to use common desktop env which they don't like.
Local user such as root or any other local use gets the gnome-panel with start menu and everything works fine for it.
I have tried restarting nis+ services as well as nfs.server service and rebooting the nis+ clients which have the issue but still hasn't helped it.
Somehow I managed to set panel preference to Normal (from Restart) and then killed the Panel PID. Started with truss,
    Here is the truss o/p.
http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=thvekw7VAnother thing observed is when the nis+ user logs into these workstations, they can't do ssh to any machine , it hangs and CTRL C also doesn't kill it. They have to close the terminal itself to kill it.

I am experiancing the same issue. User homes are on nfs automount. No NIS is set up currently. The problem appeared after the home directories were mounted with nfs3. Previously they were mounted as nfs4. But even newly created users get empty gnome panel.

  • Gnome panel launcher icon size

Is there a way to make GNOME panel launcher icons smaller? (like in XFCE panels...)
Or, is there any other type of launcher that can be used?

If you downsize the panel, the icons will be downsized too..
There is also the drawer applet, which can contain the icons...

  • Gnome Panel applet that shows output of system command.

    Hi all;
Because of the recent hostile takeover of #archlinux channel by tilling WM fanatics..    I will ask here..
Does any one know of a Gnome Panel applet that shows the output of system command of your choice?
For people who Conky is a bit too much and they only want a simple piece of data available (like what is the current IP on ppp0 interface) like me..  this is a necessity.
If its not in existence I would probably make one.. shouldn't take long, I also would like to hear if there is any interest.
    Thanks

That's exactly what I was looking for!  Thank you!
    Changed code to:
    $dism = "X:\Windows\System32\Cmd.exe /c start CMD /k dism /apply-image /imagefile:D:\W7x86.wim /index:1 /applydir:C:\"
And voila, new window opened with the live output of dism.
new... and have a glazed over look about my eyes to prove it...

  • Gnome panel foot logo--arch logo

it used to be that if you wanted your gnome panel to have the arch logo rather than the foot logo you would replace /opt/gnome/share/piximaps/gnome-logo-icon-transparent.png with the archlogo, this is no longer the case. (as of gnome 2.16 afaik) can anyone help me on this. I am getting a little sick of the foot

  • [solved] nm-applet does not show up in Gnome panel

    Hi all,
I installed networkmanager, network-manager-applet and dbus this afternoon. As well as a fresh install of Gnome. This is all done on my laptop, which my wife wants to use now and then. I always set up the network CLI, but now I will need a nice flashy applet in the Gnome panel.
I managed to run the network-connection-editor as root, and got the network up.
I had some dbus problems when I tried launching nm-applet, but fixed it with a dbus-hack I found in some other thread. But when I now launch nm-applet, it says that there allready is an instance running of nm-applet.
I guess it should show up in the panel, if it is. But I don't see anything there... Do you have any ideas of what I forgot to install/configure/check.
    Thanks,
    jocom

There have been a couple similar posts recently. I'm not using Gnome anymore or networkmanager, so I don't know if there's a problem with it or not. If I remember correctly I had to install gnome-panel-bonobo, and I believe python-notify and gksu too. You can do a search on the wiki for networkmanager, there is a page for it that explains the configuration changes you'll need to make. Hope it helps.
