Gnome places menu opens with file-roller

In the gnome places menu - all works fine except when trying to open recently used items - which open up with file roller instead of the proper app. The same thing happens when trying to download OOo docs - I can't open them directly but have to save them first. I've search through gconf-editor settings, have all my 'properties/open with' etc. all correct in nautilus and for individual items, but no luck.
Any thoughts?

Thanks - I read this already though, but it doesn't work. Actually the only things in recently used docs that don't open, and the only things I can't open automatically when downloading (ie I have to save them first and open them separately) are OOo docs. But I have OOo docs set to open with OOo - so its a conundrum!

  • [MATE] Places menu opens Nautilus

I have both MATE (fork of Gnome 2), and Gnome 3 installed.  In MATE, the places menu opens Nautilus 3, but the desktop icons open Caja (MATE's fork of Nautilus 2).
How can I fix it so that both the desktop and the places menu open the file manager (I'd prefer Nautilus 3)?

After installing Mavericks my iMac opens with the "rolling surf" desktop. I can then start my preferred desktop from a saved 'photo but when I retsart the iMac it reverts to "rolling surf". How can I get it to remember to open with MY choice rather than Apple's?

I did a little research on this, as I found some strange things with the .plist files.
It appears that Apple has changed the way that the plist files are handled, and there is now an extra step in the trashing-the-.plist-file fix:
    1. hold down the option key
    2. in the Go menu in the Finder, scroll down to Libary
    3. in Library, find Preferences
    4. in Preferences, find  com.apple.desktop.plist  and drag it to the trash.
    5. go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
         1. Sort by Process Name and look for two processes named cfprefsd.
         2. Make sure you select the one that has your user account, not "root", listed as the User.
         3. Click the X up at the top left to kill that process
    5. restart
    6. this will generate a new .plist file, so you will have to reenter your preferences.
Sorry for the confusion. Could you try this and let us know-

  • A problem with file-roller!!!

    I have a problem with file-roller.
When I open an achieve file with file-roller, I can not directly open the file in the file-roller. "Open with" does not work either.
But if i use sudo for file-roller, "open" and "open with" do work.
How can I use "open" and "open with" without sudo for file-roller?
Can any body help me ?

    Hi,
The link is working... it's not a nautilus quirk. Try these examples:
    FIRST EXAMPLE:
Login as root and edit mimeinfo.cache (In openSUSE, the linux distribution I'm using right now, this file is placed on /usr/share/applications).
    su
    gedit /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
    Search for audio/mpeg=
The first application I specify is going to be the program that File-Roller will use to open a compressed mp3 file.
    Example:
    audio/mpeg=totem.desktop;banshee-1.desktop;
    This will open Totem...
    audio/mpeg=banshee-1.desktop;totem.desktop;
    This will open Banshee.
    SECOND EXAMPLE:
    $ su
    $ gedit /usr/share/applications/defaults.list
    Search for:
    text/xml=MozillaFirefox.desktop
    Replace to:
    text/xml=gedit.desktop
This will open xml files with Gedit, instead of Firefox.
    Good luck.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Places Menu - Home, Desktop, etc folders open with...

Hello, I somehow managed to get EasyTag to open the links in Gnome's Places menu, but it's driving me insane.
    I've tried:
-removing EasyTag, which doesn't fix the problem, and leaves me with the error "Could not open location file:///home/james"
-setting folder properties from within nautilus to open folders with "File Browser", but that does nothing
    -looked in gnome-conf in /desktop/gnome/applications/component_viewer
    -searched for easytag in gnome-conf
I've look high and low for answers, but none of which seem to help me out.

  • Gnome, Nautilus / Pcman Main menu Opening Find File instead of Home

    Hi there,
I am running two user, mine on Compiz-standalone with Pcman as it's lighter.
The second user is using gnome and therefore need and want to keep using nautilus,
The problem is when trying to open the Home folder from the Gnome main menu, a dialogue box "Find File" is opening instead of the Home folder by Nautilus.
Now after searching the forum, I edited the /usr/share/applications/mime.cache
However this hasn't change the problem, I try restarting the PC for the change to take effect but without success.
Any suggestion on how to resolve this annoying bug?

I am having the same issue, using regular Gnome with Nautilus. I started noticing it after the upgrade to Gnome 2.30. Clicking any of the top section buttons under the Gnome panel's "Places" menu brings up "Find Files" searching inside the folder, instead of Nautilus on the folder. Clicking on "Computer" actually does bring up Nautilus.

  • Gnome places menu [SOLVED]

Strange behaviour on my gnome desktop. Folders in the places menu are opened by audacious instead of nautilus.
I tested deleting all gnome configuration folders and reinstalling nautilus without luck.
Removing audacious does not default to nautilus either:
      Could not open location 'file:///home/******'
There was an error launching the default action command associated with this location.
This only happens in the places menu. Elsewhere nautilus opens folders.

    Thanks kensai. I did
    update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
    after commenting out
    <alias type="x-directory/normal"/>
    in /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml
    Now gnome-open works again.
gvfs-open did not need this change.

  • Ability to add multiple apps to Open With file associations

It would be extremely helpful if Bridge's "file association" dialog allowed one to associate multiple applications with a file type, so the Open With function worked like Lightroom's Edit In function which allows the use of multiple external editors.  As it is currently designed, only one new "default" association can be changed/added.   A current list of other available "editors" also appears in the Open With context menu, but it is unclear (at least to me) where that list comes from because there are some pretty strange entries in the list for any specific file type.
    Thanks

Agreed -- I've always been curious as to what random generator Bridge uses to assign programs with file types.

  • Broken Illustrator CS4 "Open With" File Association

I want to open an SVG file, using Illustrator CS4. (I have the Design Premium Suite.) I cannot get it to open from Windows Explorer in CS4. Double-clicking the file opens it in CS3. Here's what I do and what happens:
    1. Right-click on the SVG file in Windows Explorer.
    2. Choose "Open With." A menu of programs pops up. Illustrator CS4 is not in the list, but CS3 is.
    3. So I click on "Choose Program" to find CS4. The "Open With" window opens.
    4. "Adobe Illustrator CS4" is not in the "Recommended Programs" list, but it is in the "Other Programs" list. However, I note that its listing has a generic icon, instead of the "Ai" CS4 icon.
    5. I click on "Adobe Illustrator CS4" expecting the program to load. Instead, an error message pops up: "<filepath and filename.svg> is not a valid Win32 application."
    So I started over:
    1-4. Same as above.
    5. Click on "Browse" to find the Illustrator.exe program file directly. I did this twice:
         a. First with the "Adobe Illustrator CS4" shortcut at: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Adobe Illustrator CS4.lnk". This takes me back to the "Open With" window, with the bad "Adobe Illustrator CS4" listing highlighted.
         b. Then with the actual program at: "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4\Support Files\Contents\Windows\Illustrator.exe". This takes me back to the "Open With" window with "Adobe Illustrator CS3" highlighted.
What can I do to fix this?
    Additional notes:
    1. I was able to use "Open With" to specify several browsers to open the SVG file. So the problem seems to relate specifically to the links to Illustrator CS4, rather than any overall "Open With" functionality.
    2. Right-clicking on an EPS file, and choosing "Open With," behaves exactly as right-clicking on an SVG file.
    3. Right-clicking an AI file show two instances of "Adobe Illustrator CS3"-- one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. Clicking on each entry opens the correct program for the icon, however.
How do I also fix this?
    Mike
Message was edited by: Mike Wickham

First an update: I compared registry entries with the CS4 installation on my laptop. I saw that quite a few of the Adobe.Illustrator.<etc>  keys were
missing, and many of the ones that were there had CS3 paths listed instead of CS4. So I uninstalled Illustrator CS4 and reinstalled it. That fixed some
problems. I also, in Windows Explorer, used Tools> Folder Options> File Types to change Illustrator CS4 to the default program to open AI, EPS, and
SVG files. I chose "Advanced" and "Edit" in the File Type dialog and noticed that some of the entries for open were missing the "Open" action. So I fixed that.
I've got the AI, EPS, and SVG files where I can open them with the correct programs now, but there are still some weirdities using right-click and Open With:
    For AI files:
There are two instances of Adobe Illustrator CS3 listed. One has a CS3 icon. The other has the CS4 icon. The AI file opens with the program
associated with the icon. If I choose Open With, then "Other Programs, there is a listing for Adobe Illustrator CS4, but it has a generic window icon and does not work. I get the "<path><filename>.ai is not a valid Win32 application" error.
    For EPS files:
There are also two entries for Adobe Illustrator CS3, again one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. Again they both open the program that matches the icon. There is also an Adobe Illustrator CS4 listed, but it has the shortcut icon for CS4 (the one with the arrow). It opens CS4. If I choose
Other Programs, the non-working, generic icon Adobe Illustrator CS4 is also listed.
    For SVG files:
There are also two Adobe Illustrator CS3 listings, one with a CS3 icon and one with a CS4 icon. There is also an Adobe Illustrator CS4 listed, but with the shortcut version of the icon. They all open the program associated with the icon shown. If I choose Other Programs, the listings and icons under "Recommended Programs" are correct for both CS3 and CS4, plus there is a CS4 listing with the generic icon.
Is there any way to fix this stuff without uninstalling/reinstalling the whole Design Premium suite? While the reinstall of Illustrator CS4 did fix
some things, it also broke some. It reinstalled a bunch of ancillary programs, like ExtendScript that I didn't tell it to reinstall. I ran Adobe
update and now ExtendScript and and Adobe Drives service update fail to update. I ran the update from Acrobat. Looking in Illustrator, the update
button is grayed out and completely unavailable.

  • FMv7, Open With/File Association

    Installed FMv9 after installing FMv7.
On file server, v7 files now show v9 Icon.
When doubleclicking v7 files, they open in v9.
When right clicking v7 file, to Open With, v7 is not listed as an option. If I Browse to v7.exe and select it, the Open With dialog still does not show v7.
We have to abort Open With, start FMv7, and then drag v7 file onto FM program window. Or, in FMv7 program, do File Menu > Open and navigate to v7 file.
What happened to the File Association to FM v7? And why can we not open v7 files via Open With?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Sounds like standard Windows file associations. You can only have one file type ".fm" associated with an EXE. You could re-associate ".fm" with the FM7 EXE, but then you'd have the same problem but the other way around. There's no easy way for the OS to know if a file is an FM7 or FM9 file (unless you gave them special file extensions (".fm7" and ".fm9") and tweaked the registry a bit. I assume that the OpenWith settings got overwritten by the FM9 installer. In theory, you could probably mess with things to get FM7 added back in. Might be easier to add FM7 to the "SendTo" context menu.
I have many versions of FM installed on the same OS. I deal with this by running the FM version first, then drag and drop the file from Windows Explorer onto the FM application window (the title bar if a document is already open). Perhaps not as convenient, but the options are not ideal.

  • Cleanup of Finder Contextual Menu - Open With

How can I clean up the 'Open With' Finder Contextual Menu? It currently has duplicate entries for some applications (and, no, I don't have multiple copies of these applications installed on my Mac).
I tried to rebuild the 'Launch Services' database using a tool called 'Cache Out X,' but that didn't do do the trick.
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

    David,
That seems like a logical conclusion. Documentation? I assume you mean:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -h
lsregister: [OPTIONS] [-domain { system | local | user | network }]... [path]...
Search the paths for application bundles and add each found item to the Launch
Services database. For domain specifications, ask CF for the list of application
    locations in the given domain(s).
-kill Reset the global Launch Services database before doing anything else
-lint Print information about plist errors while registering bundles
-convert Register apps found in older LS database files
-lazy n Sleep for n seconds before registering apps if the local cache
    is aleady populated.
-r Recursively register directory contents, do not recurse into
    packages or invisible directories.
-R Recursively register directory contents, including the contents
    of packages and invisible directories.
-f force-update registration info even if mod date is unchanged
    -v Display progress information.
-dump Display full database contents after registration.
    -h Display this help.
Still not sure why /Volumes/* yielded three entries for GraphicConverter. However, when I was searching for all possible occurrences of the application, I did notice something odd: the GraphicConverter application does not include a ".app" extension. All the other applications that I checked include this extension.

    Hi all.
here's my problem; parallels desktop 4 has hijacked file association on some of my file types and wont let me change them back to their mac equivilants
Accidentally clicking on one of these parallels associated apps causes the virtual machine to boot up, slowing my pc down dramatically and causing me grief.
Setting certain files to 'always open with' the equivilant mac app [eg. trying to get text documents to open with textedit as oppose to xp's notepad, hasn'thelped]
    any suggestions ? - i am stumped
    Thanks!

Delete Windows Applications folder in Virtual Machine folder (it's from Mac Side); disable Shared Applications from Configuration Editor.
    ---or---
...other permanent solution to try on Mac side
1 select a file in your finder (e.g. .doc)
    2 press <cmd>
3 go to 'open with' option...
4 select the correct application (e.g. Microsoft Word)
    5 click 'change all' - done...go try
When Microsoft Word is already selected, change that to another app, click 'change all', then set it back to Microsoft Word again and once more click 'change all'.
If still no joy, try strong language....

  • Open with file type

    Hello,
How can I class of files of given type with a specific application?  For example I have both Pages and OpenOffice installed and by default I want any .doc file to open in Pages unless I manually say otherwise.
I've seen forum posts about Open With, etc, and that works for an individual file but I want all files of .doc type to open with Pages w/o having to set each one.  (OpenOffice apparently re-wrote the default upon installation.)
    Thanks.

Use Get Info (⌘ I) and select the application you want to open the file with, then select Change All...

    Thanks,

Under the option to change the application in Get Info there is the option to "change all" to open all documents like this one..
