Gnome settings do not take, and gnome-settings-manager breaks things.

I just updated my Arch install. I hadn't done a full system upgrade since December (I think). The install went fine as far as I can tell. It broke my xorg.conf again, but it always does that, no biggie.
My biggest fight seems to be with the gnome-settings-manager. I am now getting no icons in the menus, the mouse runs extremely slow and the only way to get it to run at a normal tracking speed is to use the KDE 'systemsettings' to change it (bizarre). Also, any desktop background that I assign is essentially covered over on startup with a background color and I cannot (using any settings program in the menus) actually put something there. I'm sure there's just some confusion over what is in control of the desktop and which config file is being used, but I cannot find any other mention of this issue in the forums, and forcefully re-installing gnome has yielded no help. I also moved all my '.gnome' dirs under home to some other location, and this made no difference.

When I run gnome-mouse-properties from a command line, I see this:

I'll assume it is an integer, but that may break things.
Please be sure that the associated schema is installed

Just to reinforce what byte said: I had similar problems and moving .gconf worked. If it doesn't, you can also try moving .gnome2. And then if you are versed in the edition of gnome settings files, you can search and repair the faulty ones. If not (like me)... start from scratch, delete the moved dir.
It would be great if the gnome devs simplified the format of settings files (make it more like rc.conf!) and made it so they don't break so often. Maybe a system a la windows where previous versions of the registry get saved. Then upon breakage one could just bring up the last working version. Of course the best thing would be for the settings to not get corrupted in the first place.

By everything, I am assuming you have tried resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) and PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379). If you haven't tried this yet, please do!

The update you're talking about was the firmware update. Hopefully resetting the PRAM gets you up and running. Try resetting it 3 times in a row (hold the keys down until you hear 3 startup chimes).

By "not running", what exactly do you mean?
You can't open it from "Programs"? You can't open it when double clicking a pdf file? You can't open a link to a pdf on a web page? Do you get any error messages?

Products does not appear and sometimes Extension Manager doesnt finish loading

I just installed Adobe Extension Manager CC on my iMac and it keeps on loading for a long time and when its done I see no products but should be seeing photoshop. How can I add it to the list? Plus, sometimes it just doesnt finish loading at all.

Have you moved or renamed Photoshop CC installation folder? Did you install PS CC in the default location or removable drive? Please check "/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC/Adobe Photoshop CC.app/Contents/Resources/AMT/application.xml" to see whether one or more path in it is incorrect.
For the slow loading issue, please update Extension Manager CC to the latest version (7.1.1) firstly. Then startup it. Click "Tools"->"Preferences" menu item in Extension Manager, check "Enable detailed logging" option. Restart Extension Manager. When it finishes loading or hangs, send all files in "/Users/<YourUserName>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Extension Manager CC/Log" to [email protected]

Can I transfer notes from the app Audio Note Taker on to my MacBook??

I have Audio Note Taker and I am trying to find Audio Note Taker Sync Utility so that I can transfer notes to my Macbook. Does anyone know where I can find that or another way to transfer my Audio Notes to my Mac???

I have no experience with the App, so I don't know how the actual notes are saved.
Try using Evernote. It's free, and has audio note support. It has a PC/Mac app, so syncing is very easy.

Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad. Data will be lost.

Centre button does not work and Ipod wont play

Help please ! My IPOD seems to have just stopped working ! it will scroll using the buttons but wont actually allow me to select anything with the centre button. I have tried turning off and on which did not help and have just let the thing go totally flat and am now recharging to see if that will help, if not im stuck please help anyone ? is this regular is it terminal ?

hmmm.... weird. i tried the centre button again... and it still did not work. but when i pressed the centre button quickly about 5 times... that it is finally working again! weird!

[Solved] Systemd - Overrides settings of Gnome-Power-Manager?

I've always used the following to lines to tell Gnome-Power-Manager not to suspend my laptop, when the lid is closed:
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action 'blank'
org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power lid-close-battery-action 'blank'
I remember a huge (and regular...) discussion around Gnome 3, because the developers resisted to re-implemented a button for this in the UI of Gnome3. Well, the two lines above done their job all the time. Since the last update of Systemd this seems to be ignored:

This is driving me crazy. I've read the article, but I still don't understand what I'm supposed to do. I have tried changing values from logind.conf *IgnoreInhibited to yes to no, but the laptop still suspend when the lid is closed .
All you need to do is set HandleLidSwitch=ignore in logind.conf, this will make systemd ignore the lid switch completely, and leave gnome to handle it. Its pretty self explanatory... You can also set the other similar options to ignore, like HandlePowerKey, HandleSuspendKey, HandleHibernateKey if you want only gnome to handle them.

Below that, it says that this update requires a Wi-Fi network connection to download. So I connected my phone to my computer and tried to update throug itunes. When I clicked the update tab on itunes on my laptop, an alert pops up that says I need to be connected to the internet for th update to take place. I am confused because I am connected to the internet, but for some reason the connection is not being recognized when I try to update.
I am using a Gateway laptop and my internet connection is a verizon 4g device that I plug into a USB port. I feel like this should be so simple but have not been able to figure it out even when I called Apple and spoke to a rep...help!

In order to download to your phone over the air, you need to be connected to WiFi.
It's possible the Internet connection through Verizon is not stable enough for the downlaod to begin (it is a very large download).
You might want to head over to Starbucks with your laptop for the afternoon and see if you can download it over their WiFi.

No, nothing will prevent the computer from going to sleep when you close its display except third-party hacks that are designed to do exactly that. I strongly advise against using any of those, as they may interfere with successful entry into clamshell mode (and they carry other downside risks as well). Just wait until the computer is asleep (with its sleep light pulsing), then press any key on the keyboard. It sounds as though your setup is working as it's designed to do.

Upon startup Firefox says "Proxy is refusing connections." When I select "Auto-Detect Proxy" from Advanced settings and solve problem, changes are not saved and upon next startup I must select again...!

Firefox 4 was working fine. Then one day, when I started up Firefox, it says "Proxy is refusing connections." I solved this by selecting "Auto-Detect Proxy" from Advanced network settings, but my changes are not saved and upon every start-up I must select it again! (I even completely removed my webroot antivirus protection, as it as hindering many proxy related programs, but this seems to not be the source of the problem)

My Wi-Fi network is working, as evidenced by the fact I'm able to do this. A week ago the Wi-Fi setting was working fine and now nothing. I have completely updated the software.

What you see means that the Broadcom WiFi/Bluetooth chip is not being recognized by iOS.
There are some steps recommended by Apple to solve this but you may have a hardware problem.
