Gnome-Shell Ibus Anthy Hotkeys don't work

I installed ibus and anthy and am now able to input Japanese. My problem is that I can't enable or disable Japanese input via hotkey. <Control>space doesn't do anything. I have to go to the top bar and then change the 'Input Mode' from Hiragana to Latin or back. That is really inconvenient when trying to type a text with both Japanese and English. I already tried setting 'next input method' to another key in ibus-preferences but that didn't help.
I have German and English keyboard layout enabled and switch between them with alt+shift, in case that makes any difference.

Hi. I think you can set the shortcut when you run 'ibus-setup' as normal user. Default is Meta+Space, i.e. Win+Space on my keyboard.

The hotkey requires an Toshiba driver/utility called Toshiba Value Added Package.
Did you check if your notebook is ready for Win 8 upgrade?

i recently acquired this laptop, and i installed win7 64 bits prof. The first problem was that wireless card was not installed, but i go to toshib website and downloaded the new one, next to that i can't activate the card with the fn + f8 key, thats the only way to activate the card,
i already downloaded some drivers and utilities and i can't activate the card, the hotkey don't work and there's not another switch, software won't work either

In front of me I have Satellite L500-154. This laptop has no WLAN switch and in preinstalled Vista you can enable WLAN card using FN+F8 only. I have searched a way to enable WLAN card without FN+F8 key combination. No way.
So if you have OS without working FN+F8 key combination you will not be able to enable WLAN card.
I really don't understand why do you think it can be because of laptop.
Install supported operating system and you will see everything will be OK.
So it has nothing to do with faulty hardware.

Gnome-shell-extension-user-theme does not work.

Hello everyone,
I am having an interesting issue with using custom gnome-shell themes via the gnome-tweak-tool and user-theme extension on a fresh install today. It is showing as enabled in the shell extension list, but when trying to select a gnome-shell theme, it's grayed out and says extension is disable. All other theme options work correctly. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Yes, there's a problem with the latest version of user theme package. See last post in this thread (post #75):

Basically, you need to remove user theme extension, download the one specified in that post and install that instead, using pacman -U packagename

[SOLVED] gnome-shell-extension-user-theme doesn't work.

gnome-tweak-tool shows that I have the gnome-shell-extension-user-theme extension installed and I can turn it on and off, but it has no effect. I still can't choose a theme. The exclamation mark next to the drop down selector is still active when the extension is on. Any idea what might be wrong?

Well yea I agree, but atm it's not going to happen. Anyway, since GS won't work with Catalyst for now I resorted to DWM and try to avoid all the gconf/dconf stuff. Works quite well

Equium U400 PSU42E: Hotkeys don't work with Vista

My touch sensitve hotkeys aren't working!
They were working last night but not any more.
I know this is a common issue when people have change from Vista to XP but i haven't.
Can you help. ?

As Mores said, use the system restore tool.
But it would be interesting if you installed something on your notebook or not. Maybe this causes the error.
And I never heard about this issue after changing from Vista to XP.

X240: No CAPS LOCK indicator; most Fn hotkeys don't work

When I push CAPS LOCK, I don't see the CAPS LOCK indicator on the screen.
Also, of the Fn hotkeys, only the mute, volume up/dn, and brightness up/dn work - the others don't.
Refreshed hotkeys driver.
When I go to "On Screen Display" tab in screen Advaned Settings, I see: Enable on-screen display checkbox; Appearance box, with color selections and fadeout time. I don't see below it checkboxes for Caps Lock and Num Lock.

Volume hotkeys don't work

Hello,
The volume hotkeys (F10, F11 and F12 without holding fn) bring up the opaque volume window and change the inidicated volume (increase, decrease or mute, but the output volume remains unchanged. The menubar and system preference volume controls work. I'm running 10.6.8, recently reinstalled from scratch. All other hotkeys work.

Hotkeys don't work with Netflix player

When a video is playing on Netflix the hotkeys for firefox do not work. For example, ctrl+r/f5 will not reload the page - like if the playback has timed out or the video is buffering. Also, ctrl+tab will not switch to a new tab. The hotkeys for IE do work - f5 will reload the page.

Does Netflix use the Flash player?
Often if you interact with a media plugin, the plugin will continue to capture your keyboard input until you click outside of the plugin. If the media auto-plays, this normally is not an issue until you interact with the control.
There is a known issue on YouTube where the YouTube player may continue to capture keyboard input ''after'' you click one of the control buttons (e.g., pause, play, volume), ''even after'' you click in the page outside the player.
I haven't reviewed the threads on the YouTube issue recently to discover whether there is a solution, but one workaround was to use a Windows-level hotkey, such as Alt+Tab twice in succession (switches to next window, then switches back), to break the grip of the plugin.

[Solved] Gnome-shell text turned to rectangles after botched upgrade

Hi all,
I've run into a problem that I just can't solve, so I was wondering if somebody with a lot of expertise could help out. My system has a couple of stability issues; it freezes up every few days, and I have to make a hard reboot (I think it's related to the video card, but I haven't had the funds to go get a better one yet). The last time it froze was during a pacman upgrade, and I had to reboot. At the new boot, after logging in, all of the gnome-shell letters turned to rectangles (see screenshot), and I had a bunch of other errors. I ran another upgrade Sync with pacman and rebooted; that took care of the errors, but the font problems still remained. The interesting thing is that the gdm window has no problems, I can see the icons on the top right just fine, and the date renders perfectly. It's only when I log in when the blocks occur, and they only occur on gnome-shell panel text (and on everything under Activities).
I have a 32-bit system that's fully migrated to systemd with open source radeon drivers. Here's some output of journalctl for the current boot, with stuff unrelated to the gnome-shell display removed (e.g. NetworkManager, UFW, etc). However, I didn't find any new errors compared to logs from before the upgrade.

I tried using gnome-tweak tool to fiddle around with the fonts, but that didn't help, none of the fonts would render correctly. Cantarell, which I'm assuming is the gnome-shell font, is still in /etc/fonts/conf.avail, so I don't think that the font file itself went missing. I made the fontconfig update a while ago, and that didn't cause any problems.
I also heard that there were problems with xorg-server, so I downgraded xorg-server, pixman, and cairo to their previous versions, but that didn't help either. EDIT: I've also done a pacman -Syyf gnome-shell to try and reinstall gnome-shell. That also didn't work.
I've run out of things to try. If someone else was more familiar with the workings of gnome-shell fonts, or had a better idea of how to debug, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.
UPDATE: I found that /etc/fonts/conf.avail/31-cantarell.conf existed, but was empty. After doing a pacman -Syyf cantarell-fonts, they went right back to normal!

Problem disappeared.
I'm not sure, but i think installing xf86-video-modesetting helped to fix this issue.
I had an error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log like this:

How to restart(--replace) gnome-shell Ctrl+Alt+F*

Hi,
I'm having random Gnome-shell freezes, everything seems to be working fine except for the shell itself, which seems to be completely frozen. I want to restart it using CTRL+ALT+F* and
gnome-shell --replace
or
mutter--replace
, but I get this:
Window manager error: unable to open X display.
I know from random research that I have to set the $DISPLAY env. but I don't know which display to export.

Yep, I tried this with no luck. I guess I need to get the correct display number.
However, here i had to issue gnome-shell --replace multiple times until it got accepted. And even then, it sometimes crashed completely and threw me back to the dm. An alternative could be to pkill gnome-shell, as it should get auto-respawned by the gnome-session.
edit: assuming /usr/share/applications/gnome-shell.desktop sets X-GNOME-AutoRestart=true
I tried this and it works great, I still have to issue the command while the shell is frozen, but I guess it'll work fine

[SOLVED] Gnome Shell Extensions won't install from website

When I go to https://extensions.gnome.org/ from either Chromium or Firefox, extensions fail to install. If I click the toggle to turn a new extension "ON", nothing happens. Reloading the site switches it back to "OFF".
I was able to install gnome-shell-extension-mediaplayer-git from the AUR. (Which also pulls in gnome-shell-extension-common-git.) It works fine. The problem is that most of the extensions on the AUR appear to be outdated and the users directed to the official site.
This is a relatively new install of Arch and extensions have never worked. Maybe there's a package I'm missing? Or is there a way to get any debugging output? I'm not sure where to look.

I found the following from AskUbuntu (not my own words, pasted from the source:
I'll take a wild stab in the dark: If you're using Chrome/Chromium, navigate to about:plugins and make sure "Gnome Shell Integration" is enabled. Then navigate back to extensions.gnome.org and when the ribbon appears at the top make sure you "Always Allow for this Site"
On Firefox you'll have to do something similar if you've turned extensions off. Browse to about:plugins and make sure libgnome-shell-browser-plugin.so is present / enabled. If it's not, upgrade Gnome Shell, or find it on your filesystem and link to it from to ~/.mozilla/plugins (you shouldn't have to do this though).

[GNOME 3.6] ibus-anthy no longer works

After upgrading to 3.6, Japanese input via ibus-anthy no longer exists. I've added Japanese input back via "Regional and Language" settings.
In gnome-shell I can switch between "en" and "ja", but I still type in English. It completely fails in fallback mode.
Possibly related: ibus-pinyin no longer works

There's https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/32293 but I'm not sure if it's related.

[gnome-unstable] ibus doesnt work

The new intergrated ibus in gnome-shell (which is one of my favorite features of 3.6) doesnt work. I can add the ibus keyboard (ibus-pinyin or Chinese (Pinyin)) in the system settings, but the settings opiton is grayed out (even though I know it has them), and when I switch to it and type all that comes out is qwerty (my default layout is dvorak)
