GNOME-Shell with GNOME-Panel look

For all the GNOME-Users out there.
I think a lot of people would like that the GNOME-Shell have an options which enables to use it like the current GNOME-Panel (from the design).
So there is a bottom panel which shows open windows and things like that.
I made a bug-report for that and if you like the idea you can vote for it or leave a comment: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625587

bugzilla.gnome.org wrote:Status: RESOLVED WONTFIX
I can't say I'm very surprised.  Although it would be nice.
Once I got a glimpse of gnome-shell I knew I wasn't ever going to like it, so I figured I would ditch GNOME before it came out (when I would leave GNOME anyway).  Xfce and I have been good buddies since then, though I may end up on Openbox.

  • Gnome-shell with nouveau - how is the performance

    I have an old 8400GS and find gnome-shell's performance under nouveau pretty bad.  Is it my card or the driver?  If you have a more powerful card, how is the performance?  I'm no gamer but is there a more powerful (none fan cooled) nvidia card that's better?

    Looks okay.... guess my 8400GS is just underpowered for this driver.  I ordered the 450 GTS so we'll see

  • Gnome-Shell in Gnome 3.2 not working after upgrade

    Hi guys,
    after upgrading from Pacman, Gnome-Shell does not start up correctly. After login the Gnome-Keyring pops up (as usual) and after entering my password Gnome-Shell crashes ("oops.. something went wrong bla bla").
    I could resolve this problem by deinstalling Empathy.
    So basically I just wanted to inform others who may experience the same problem. Anyone knows why Empathy does not work correctly?

    I don't have this problem, but I have issues with Empathy's new clutter-based call UI not coming up.  May be the problem is with clutter??

  • Gnome-shell not run automatically

    hi.
    when gnome 3.8 came out, I was using gnome classic (compatibility mode) and the option to switch back to gnome-shell disapeared in gnome tweak tool. So I had no option to switch to gnome-shell. I never mind continue to use metacity and gnome classic in compatibility mode.
    Now in 3.10 I don't even get a mouse cursor and font rendering is awfull. So I have to use gnome-shell and not metacity.
    How do I do so that gnome-shell is automatically run when I launch a gnome session ??
    I have tried to add a gnome-shell.desktop in ~/.config/autostart or add gnome-shell with gnome-session-properties at start. Nothing worked.
    At last, I was able to prevent metacity to run at launch by removing metacity.desktop in autostart or removing a session file lying around.
    Now, I have to open a terminal and manually run gnome-shell.
    Help.
    p.s.: how does gdm launch gnome-shell for you ?

    It works.
    What I have done is to remove ~/.config/gnome-sessions/sessions/gnome-fallback.session and replace it with gnome.session
    But I got a "ooops something wrong happened" when I tried to login so I think what fixes it was running
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session gnome
    from a terminal run from a console with startx and gnome-session --session=gnome in ~/.xinitrc
    I got help from http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7385192.html
    a post from an arch user posting on gentoo forum. WTF !

  • Gnome-shell: black windows with nvidia

    Hello,
    gnome-shell with nvidia makes black windows when there are lots of windows (5-6 windows).
    When the window is black, I can resize the window to a little size and window show fine, but if I resize big it show again black. At times, the window is completely corrupted, random information in black and white. If I close some windows, everything returns to normal.
    With gnome2 (compiz or metacity) I had not this problem.
    I have not found any similar issue in the bugs section. Any advice?

    With nouveau driver everything appears corrupt.
    In the past, when I used the nouveau driver in gnome2 with compiz, the desktop was only slightly slower but functional.
    I have logged again and I have reproduced the error of black windows for a better log messages (sorry for the log messages in Spanish):

  • Does anyone have Gnome Shell up and running? If so, how did you do it?

    Hi all!
    I've tried installing Gnome Shell via gnome-shell and gnome-shell-git in AUR and the guide over here: http://zazaq.com/2010/04/27/gnome-scree … 0-on-arch/ to no avail. The latter method actually compiles after a few minor tweaks, but after running:
    gnome-shell/install/bin/gnome-shell --replace
    I am stuck with errors like this:
    JS ERROR: !!! Exception was: Error: Requiring GLib, version none: Typelib file for namespace 'GLib' (any version) not found

    Followed by:
    Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.
    Looking around on the interwebs, the latter error suggests removing xulrunner, which I have done. This actually allows me to start gnome-shell, but the only thing that happens is that mutter kicks in and the window decoration changes slightly but I do not get the actual shell. Having removed xulrunner, I get this error:
    (mutter:1063): mutter-WARNING **: Could not load library [/home/korpenkraxar/gnome-shell/install/lib64/mutter/plugins/libgnome-shell.so (libmozjs.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)]
    And now I am stuck. Any ideas or pointers anyone?

    I got it running a while back.  (Like, a couple of months ago.  It's now gone, for multiple reasons).  If memory serves me correctly, I just enabled the gnome-unstable repository and downloaded and it worked (it didn't compile properly from AUR for me).  Well, I say "worked".  It was very slow.
    Maybe add
    [gnome-unstable]
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    to pacman.conf if you want to give it a go.
    On the subject of gnome shell, has anyone got it to run smoothly?  I have a 1Gb nvidia card, 4Gb ram and dual core 3Ghz cpu and it was totally unusable when I tried it.

  • Gnome Shell gone horribly wrong - Help!

    Hi, I'm new to Arch Linux. I'm using Gnome 3 with Gnome shell, and everything was coming along just fine.
    I'm not sure what setting I've changed, but now Gnome Shell fails to startup properly. I mean the top panel is missing, and I can't use it normally. I'm not sure how to describe it, but a lot of the graphical elements are amiss or screwed up. Alt+f2 doesn't work, and docky doesn't show any animations, infact it has a black box around it.
    The problems are all visual based, but they're quite severe, I can't move / resize / close windows, sometimes I'm unable to type in the terminal.
    I know that my startup items are loading as Conky, docky and guake are loading. Is there some startup item that I've disabled by mistake? Re-installing gnome-desktop and gnome-shell didn't help.
    If I type
    gnome-shell --replace
    in the terminal, everything becomes fine and my normal desktop is restored.
    Is there anyway I can diagnose this problem and sort it out?
    Thanks in advance.
    [EDIT] - I managed a workaroudn by adding
    gnome-shell --replace
    to my list of startup items. But it's pretty fragile, can someone help me out ?

    Paanini wrote:So GNOME looks at either ~/.config/autostart OR ~/.xinitrc for startup?
    I assume you mean "startup application" like Conky etc. with "startup". AFAIK, GNOME only looks at the ordinary desktop files in ~/.config/autostart when it starts up. Those desktop files are nothing else than simple text files that are compatible with the default parsing engine that ships with Glib, the backend of GNOME. Go check them out with a text editor.
    You only need .xinitrc if you start X, a separate thing mind you, via startx or the like.  If you start X without a display manager like illustrated in the wiki and as I prefer to do it, you can often achieve the same results by editing either .xinitrc or playing around with the application gnome-session-properties. The GUI way is perhaps safer as GNOME is already loaded when your startup apps are executed.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_boot
    Finally, here's my .xinitrc for an example.
    #!/bin/sh
    # Fix the cursor theme and touchpad sensitivity
    xsetroot -cursor_name Adwaita &
    synclient VertScrollDelta=2000 &
    exec ck-launch-session gnome-session

  • [Solved] [Gnome 3.4.1] Gnome shell not working.

    After updating Gnome, it won't start. It is a bit weird because in xsession-errors I have this:
    /usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libcogl.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    I said OK. I can downgrade that package because I had libcogl.so.9. But after downgrading it wasn't working and in log was:
    /usr/bin/gnome-shell: error while loading shared libraries: libcogl.so.9: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    I really don't know what to do. Btw Arch X86_64.

  • [SOLVED!]I'd like to add a dedicated Gnome-Shell session entry to GDM.

    Edit:
    Well, thanks for all your help guys, I really did appreciate it all.
    However I've remembered something I used to use in Ubuntu.
    I added a Gnome-Shell .desktop file into my /home/myname/.config/autostart folder like this
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Exec=gnome-shell --replace &
    Hidden=false
    X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
    Name[en_US]=Gnome Shell
    Name=Gnome Shell
    Comment[en_US]=Start Gnome Shell!
    Comment=Start Gnome Shell!
    OnlyShowIn=GNOME
    It starts only in Gnome and nothing else, just how I wanted it to. I'm aware that this is more of a bandaid fix than anything else, but it works!
    Thanks again, now I can use KDE, Gnome-Shell, and Openbox.

    Hello nimbus,
    i don't have a gdm setup at hand, but i think you still need gnome-session. /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-shell.desktop should probably state
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    Exec=gnome-session --session gnome-with-shell
    Type=Application
    note gnome-sessions man page; sessions specified via the --session flag are looked for in /usr/share/gnome-sessions/sessions.
    There you should have a file like gnome-with-shell.desktop
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    EDIT: Well....definately more progress this time....I think.
    It still doesn't load gnome-shell and instead says
    No EXEC Line in session file gnome-shell, loading fallback mode.
    Here are my entries
    /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-shell.desktop
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    Exec=gnome-session --session gnome-with-shell
    Type=Application
    /usr/share/gnome-sessions/gnome-with-shell.session
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=Gnome Shell Session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;gnome-power-manager
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    Exec=gnome-shell (I added this in thinking it might be the issue
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    OnlyShowIn=Gnome
    I can still get it to load by using grun and typing gnome-shell --replace, but that's besides the point. Also it would seem that none of my startup applications load like they are suposed to, but I'm sure it's some sort of bug related to the issue.
    Edit:
    Adding even further to the oddness, it would appear that gnome.session already supposedly has these entries, further baffling me as to why it doesn't load gnome-shell to begin with unless it's in my /home/name/.config/autostart folder.
    /usr/share/gnome-sessions/Gnome.session
    RequiredComponents=gnome-shell;gnome-settings-daemon;
    IsRunnableHelper=/usr/lib/gnome-session/gnome-session-check-accelerated
    FallbackSession=gnome-fallback
    Sigh...really confused now. I guess what I need help with is figuring out why old shell here isn't loading unless it's in my autostart directory.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome-shell won't start

    Hello. I cant start Gnome-shell and it force to Fallback. In addition to, in the Fallback mode, i can't change any parameters of gnome.
    get this message when run the command:
    gnome-shell --replace
    (gnome-shell:18571): Gdk-WARNING **: The program 'gnome-shell' received an X Window System error.
    This probably reflects a bug in the program.
    The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
    (Details: serial 132 error_code 1 request_code 139 minor_code 66)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
    that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
    To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
    variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
    backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
    I have ATI Graphic card and installed Catalyst 12.4
    How can i fix it?

  • [SOLVED] Gnome Shell remove top rounded corners

    There's something that lets me down with Gnome Shell's design: the rounded/circular borders on the top left and right corners of every single window on Gnome Shell.
    Does anybody know how I can change this, and make them rect? Or at least rectangular on maximized windows.
    Thank you!

    I don't want a new theme, I like Adwaita, but I just needed this changed, thank you so much! I just put the radius to 0px.

  • Gnome Shell

    I want to basically wipe my system clean except for sudo, base and clyde and then install Gnome Shell via AUR/clyde.
    Is there an easy way to just uninstall everything? I am currently running Gnome 2.
    Also, should I install gnome-shell or gnome-shell-git from AUR?
    Thanks!

    I do not know what to do about your first Gtk-Message. It doesn't happen to me (at least I'm not aware of it) and Google doesn't help.
    For your second error (see e.g. http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-sh … 00059.html):
    rm ~/gnome-shell/install/lib/gtk-3.0/modules/libcanberra-gtk-module.so
    You might have a look at the Gnome Shell mailing list (http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-shell-list/) when you are in trouble, sometime workarounds are provided there.

    I just did a full system upgrade, hoping that would solve something, but it did not.
    Any ideas?
    EDIT: The wiki says support for gnome-shell with fglrx is "not very good".  Is anyone else using the two together successfully?
    EDIT 2: I am running two monitors, so this bug looks relevant: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=649676
    EDIT 3: Just don't use fglrx with GNOME if you want to maintain some sanity.

    I succeded running gnome-shell with fglrx but performances suck and I get a lot of glitches, back to open drivers.

  • GNOME-Shell in Testing/gnome-unstable

    I think there have to be some binary packages in testing/gnome-unstable. This mess on AUR is the hell with GNOME-Shell atm (07.10.09 15:30:17) it does not compile in any way.
    i think when a git version is compiling and running the maintainer should package some binarys and put it into gnome-unstable or testing. Beceause it can happen that 5 minutes later nothings compiles anymore

    I've also managed to build gnome-shell from git but am unable to runn the shell.
    Here's the output:
    ./gnome-shell --replace

  • Thunderbird window disappears after GNOME Shell restart

    When restart GNOME Shell with Alt f2+r, thunderbird window disappears and leaves a process you cannot kill.

    You are using a theme which does'nt support gnome 3.10 yet.
    Try using the default Adwaita theme.
    Looks like you are using Zukitwo, try this Zukitwo beta theme for 3.10
