Gnome sound recorder killed my working sound setup

Cut a long story short, I've had skype working with my mic for a week. Decided I'd record something, opened up gnome sound recorder, after recording 2 tracks successfully all of a sudden it stopped working, now my mic will not work in any application, I have fiddled with all my alsamixer settings and I can't get it to work again. Very very frustrated, I was making a lot of skype calls as my phone line just got disconnected by a storm and now I can't. i can't figure it out, does gnome sound recorder change some alsa setting??? My 5.1 surround stopped working as well, but that may be from me desperately trying alsamixer settings. I have a SB live 5.1. I tried the mic in another computer and it works.
Any help really appreciated.
Cheers

If the device is there, it could still be a mixer setting some setting of the program you are trying to use.
What programs are you trying to get your mic working with? If it just doesn't work with Skype or the sound recorder it might be that the program is listening on the wrong channel. The gnome sound recorder for example can listen on the wave-channel, the cd-channel, the microphone, etc. etc., while programs like TS2 can listen on what they call different devices. Had some trouble with TS because of that at first because with the standard setting, my wave- and microphone-record-channel were linked - with the third of a total of three settings it worked just the way it should.
If it's a mixer setting you can't resolve with the gnome volume manager maybe try gamixer. It's the best mixing program I know. Can't find the homepage, but here's a working link with reference to dependencies.http://www.t2-project.org/packages/gamix.html

  • Never used microphone input before, sound recorder window okay, no sound output.

Sound from sound recorder input goes nowhere, a sound window is supposed to open, it does not.
There is some software missing in my pavilion g7 laptop.  Media player sound is fine, internet sound
is fine, only sound missing is from the microphone input.  The sound recorder window is open and the
recording bar is moving as the input varies, how do I get the sound to the speakers.  Never used this
option before, it might be defective from the factory.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Problem solved.  You cannot turn on computer with the microphone or other audio cable plugged in.
Otherwise the computer does not respond to the inputs, you have to plug in the microphone or audio
cable after logging in and then a window will open that allows you to select the that input over the default.

Hello arindamd and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Sorry to hear you're having an issue with the sound on your device.
To rule out a software issue, backup your data (see KB12487 How to back up the data on a BlackBerry smartphone) then follow the steps in KB11320 How to perform a clean reload of the BlackBerry Device Software for Windows or KB19915 Perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software on a Mac computer).
Before any software is restored test the sound recorder.
If no sound is recorded then it's likely the issue may be a hardware one in which case you will need to contact your point of sale for hardware repair options.
    Hope this helps.

I'm using gnome 3 as well and I had that problem too, what I did was this:
    1. I installed gnome-alsamixer and activated the microphone from there (because is muted), also you can configure multiples variables there.
    2. Then I installed Audacity and with that you can record everything.
If you can't find another solution try to apply this.
Sorry if I make a mistake with english (is not my first language).

Hi thanks for that, that works for recording off the mike, but what I want is to record from any source playing on the speakers/headphone.
I found this script on the net that works very well:
    #!/bin/bash
    WAV="$1"
    if [ -z "$WAV" ]; then
        echo "Usage: $0 OUTPUT.WAV" >&2
        exit 1
    fi
    rm -f "$WAV"
    # Get sink monitor:
    MONITOR=$(pactl list | egrep -A2 '^(\*\*\* )?Source #' | \
        grep 'Name: .*\.monitor$' | awk '{print $NF}' | tail -n1)
    echo "set-source-mute ${MONITOR} false" | pacmd >/dev/null
    # Record it raw, and convert to a wav
    echo "Recording to $WAV ..."
echo "Close this window to stop"
    parec -d "$MONITOR" | sox -t raw -r 44100 -sLb 16 -c 2 - "$WAV"
    #parec –format=s16le –device=”$MONITOR” | oggenc –raw –quiet –quality=4 -o $WAV -
It records whatever is playing to a .wav file which I can then convert to whatever format I want with Audacity/Sound Converter etc ..

  • Can I make professional sounding recording with Logic in an untreated room?

I have a small bedroom-recording studio. Since starting with Logic over a year ago I have been amazed at how much you can really do with this program. I would really like to start producing my songs at level that competes with the sound quality of what most people purchase on Itunes and professional albums. However, I don't have the space or money to record and mix in an acoustically treated room. It's my little 10x12 bedroom in California after all, and I also have to keep everything else I own in the same space.
Some people argue that an acoustically treated room is the most important thing in getting a truly great sounding record, BUT my question/argument is that IT IS possible to get a pro recording without elaborate foam set-ups and bass traps, etc. Here are my thoughts and please feel free to agree or disagree and prove me wrong—also note, I am NOT talking about mastering, just getting quality recordings and mixes before the mastering stage (that I would pay a pro to take care of anyway).
I have good monitors for my setup (Event ASP6s and have had a few professional recording artists I know comment on how good they sound). I listen to music all the time on these speakers and know them very well. When I record my own music I frequently A/B my recordings (as I am recording AND mixing) with music from CDs to match the sound quality. I focus on both total recordings and specific instruments when doing this A/B strategy. I also mix at low volume levels.
My thinking is this: If I'm able match (or at least come close to matching) the sound of my instruments and mixes to a commercial recording using my speakers and Logic, then the room should not matter. The speakers are reflecting the sound of a pro recording, regardless of how the room is treated, and I am in turn emulating this sound with my own music. Thus, my music should translate well on other systems, as the pro recordings obviously would do so.
I realize that quality mics, preamps, mixing skills etc. are important for creating a professional, accurate sounding project as well, but the fact that I am unable to record in a properly treated room has always bothered me and I’m not going to be able to change this situation any time soon.
I’m curious about everyone’s opinion on this. This is a great forum and there are a lot of knowledgeable people here. This is the age of the “Home Studio” and most people with home studios don’t have quality rooms, so this is an important subject. Thanks for any feedback.

Jack, I'm in a similar boat here in Seattle. I just finished recording and mixing a few songs for demo'ing purposes and was pretty happy with what I achieved, but let's just say there was a lot of learning involved with the process.
In my limited experience, when you're working in a small untreated boxy room, you're fighting a different big problem at each stage of the recording process. When you're recording, you have to deal with comb filtering and flutter echoes (if you're recording mic'd acoustic instruments), and when mixing room modes and bass-response issues. There are various ways of addressing flutter echo, which boil down to creatively using dispersion and absorption techniques and playing around with mic placement. If you close-mic everything, you can get rid of some but not all flutter problems, but then you have to wrestle with having an exaggerated low end on all of your tracks, and you lose a lot of the open, airy quality of the instruments you're recording.
My "studio" has a couple of large bookcases along one wall, so I typically recorded the guitar in M-S stereo facing the bookcases (to get some dispersion) and set up a couple of homebrewed O-C 703 panels a few feet to each side to kill off the echoes. I also set a panel up on the wall behind me to further dampen things. It seemed to work pretty well. Mixing was a whole 'nother matter. No matter how much I A/B'd I did a bunch of mixes that wound up sounding truly awful when trialled on other systems. I went through a lot of CD-R's before finally winding up with something that wasn't actively cringeworthy (at least in terms of audio quality).
Since your setup is based on an MBP and a portable FW interface, one thing you might try is recording acoustic instruments in a larger room elsewhere in your apartment, or maybe at a friend's. Or maybe rent / borrow a church for a day.
    Hope this helps,
    Trent

  • Sound Recording. Leaving PC recording sound

Hi!, i need to leave the PC recording sound during my day work, usually around 10 hours, so i want a CLI app or command, to leave the computer recording for several hours, then, when back home, open the sound in audacity and see if there are anomalyes, so i can "see" the sound and view if there are unwanted noises in the house when its alone, (NOTE: I KNOW ITS FUNNY, but i need achieve this to se f my dog do a lot of barking and noises and see if the neighbors have reason to complain...)
i read that i can do that with the rec command something like:
    rec test.ogg + CTRL C + play test.ogg
But i need a format to record that not fills my hard drive and has a minimun quality to anderstand whats happening home, (what things my dog is destroying, lol) so i can record 9-10 hours

How much space do you have?
I was playing around with rec and I was able to do rec -c 2 test.mp3 (-c 2 gave me two channels)
If you do something like that then open up the file in audacity after the 10 hours, you should be able to see where there is noise and where there isn't.
You'd have set a capture in alsa for your mic, and you'd probably want 1 channel instead of two. You could just simply run the command in terminal and hit ctrl+c when you get home, or you could setup a crontab.

  • No sound recorded on the internal microphone after SoundMAX driver update (Windows XP)

My internal microphone is not picking up sound after I upgraded my SoundMAX driver (available from the Lenovo website here) to version 5.10.1.571.*  It looks like this was a problem before and was supposedly fixed in 5.10.1.5520 which is included in the version I have.
I have tested the audio through the Control Panel utility, i.e., Sounds and Audio Devices Properties - Voice - Test hardware.  No dice: my voice could not be detected.  I also tested via the Windows XP sound recorder utility, i.e., Accessories - Entertainment - Sound Recorder.  Same result: silence.
In the Control Panel's Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, I have verified that the Default device for Audio and Voice (playback and recording) all are set to "SoundMAX HD Audio."  The SoundMAX software that ships with this laptop (also called "control panel") is very scaled back.  There doesn't appear to be anything interesting there to adjust.
    Thanks in advance.
    * I updated the driver because I was troubleshooting my original problem.  My plug and play Logitech laptop speaker suddenly stopped working.  Alas, that problems remains and I have created a new one.

    Hello,
Here versions of the Audio Features for Windows XP driver that I was able to find:
    5.10.1.5410 - download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7ka112ww.exe
    5.10.1.5520 - download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7ka114ww.exe
    5.10.1.5670 - download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7ka113ww.exe
    5.10.1.5710 - download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7ka116ww.exe
Hopefully, one of these will work for you.

  • Sound Recorder activated automatically in WhatsApp

I was very suprised when recently a friend of mein noted that he has received a 22 minute voice recording message over WhatsApp. I found out that the integrated Sound Recorder had recorded a message acitivating and sending it out without my knowledge. Is there any kind of shortcut or combination of buttons on my Mobile or Whatsapp itself that could activate the Sound Recorder without me doing this on purpose? Normally it takes at least four clicks zu start the recording of the Sound Recorder in WhatsApp: Attachment / Audio / Soundrecorder / Start Recording

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
Sounds strange. Haven't used whatsapp myself so I'm not fully sure how the app works, but if you have the sound recording key active on the keyboard you're using you might have accidentally pressed it and recorded a message.

  • Sound recorder playback volume low ?

I have a dv6000 notebook , for the first time ever I tried recording sound using windows movie maker  to add ''narration'' but the playback volume is very low .
I tried the windows '' sound recorder '' and got the same result .
I've been through all the standard adjustments and settings and have gone into  ' control panel ' and adjusted 'levels' and everything else with no success .
When I record a video using the sound on my camera the volume is fine - it's just the mic sound that is low whether I use an external mic or the built in ones .

I have the same issue and I see no responses to your inquiry..  This Windows help menu leaves much to be desired.  Im sure I will one day figure out how to work this version that I had no clue I was buying bc it should come with a warning label..  its completely different and agonizing  and great help menu lovely.. Im sorry to be so negative  wish I could help.. Ill sit here all night till I figure it out and then post an option on how to adjust the recording volume.. Unreal..
