Gnome Startup and xkb

Hello Folks,
I usually use xfce or kde...I want to be objective so I decided to give Gnome a spin.
Gnome 2.6* and the new 2.8* (from testing) both throw up errors that they cannot initialize xkb on startup.
None of the other WM's that I've installed, including kde, are having any issues.
I'm calling it (from the appropriate .xinitrc files) with "exec gnome-session".
Either as a user, or as root, same errors.
Gnome appears to still operate, but 2.8 throws up multiple and repeated xkb initialization complaints, where 2.6 throws only two before proceeding.
Suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. I was already under the impression that x.org has a probolem with this, and not Arch itself.
However, I did not port from xfree, rather I did a clean install to my system, and pacman'd in xorg in leiu of xfree. The section doesn't exist.
I've copied in the relavent section of my xorg.conf file. There is no mention of xfree. I also did a text serach using nano, and also found no other references to xfree...
Seeing that it is a widespread issue, and I'm sure folks out there are scrambling to fix it, then I have a question:
Can I just ignore it, knowing that a fix will eventually come? Will Gnome operate correctly, so I can give it a fair evaluation?
Or do you think I should wait to evaluate Gnome, until a fix is obtained?

Mpd and gnome startup applications [SOLVED]

i am using mpd as a regular user (i couldnt get the permissions right when trying to follow the wiki's instructions)
so to start mpd i must execute:
mpd ~/.mpd/config
however, that doesnt work when pasted into gnome's startup applications, it also doesnt work when put under Exec= in a .desktop entry.
how can i make this executable so i dont have to type it? i'd rather not put it in .xinitrc

Unable to capture startup and shutdown event of Photoshop in automation Plugin.

Hi,
I am creating an automation plugin and I want to register some events. I have seen listener plugin sample to register event in startup and unregister event in shutdown. I have used same code in my plugin but I am unable to capture the startup nad shutdown event of Photoshop. On clicking the menu item of my plugin the calls come inside the AutoPluginMain but during the startup or shutdown of plugin, the calls does not come inside the AutoPluginMain.
I am unable to detect the cause of the problem. Can someone please giude me??

Yes, I am working on Windows. As you suggested, I compiled .rc file but the compile option for .r file was disabled. After compiling the .rc file, I again rebuild the complete project and tested my build. But still I was not able to achive the desired result.

I installed the latest version of Firefox last night. It worked 3-4 times flawlessly. Now, it crashes at startup and gives me a box with crash detail report. How can I fix this?

I have a brand new HP dv8t laptop that is straight from the manufacturer 2 days ago.
Last night, I attempted to download and installed the latest version of Firefox. After installing, it worked great for an hour or so (3.4 different sessions).
Then, this morning when I came back to the computer, Firefox crashes at startup and gives me the option of finding a solution online or quitting the program.
How aggravating!
I have installed this same version on 2 other computers that I own, without any issue.
I have attempted to uninstall Firefox from the dv8 and reinstalling, to no avail.
I cannot find the crash report, but I do this see this message once the app crashes:

You might try using the add-on 'NoSquint' which allows numerous zoom options specific to each page you visit & keeps your settings - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nosquint/

In most cases you can simply "upgrade" (meaning downgrade) directly from the installation. It would be a good idea to save your passwords & bookmarks just to be on the safe side.

Using launchd to send an email on startup and shutdown

Hello All !
I'd like to get an email whenever my Mac starts up and shuts down, since I have to leave it unattended for quite some long periods of time (and even with the help of a UPS, power goes out anyway...). My Mac runs under Mac OS X Lion.
I found some help on the Internet, mainly from this page : http://www.syntaxtechnology.com/2009/06/email-on-shutdown-and-restart/ , which applies to Linux, and hoped it could work on Mac OS X (I thought at first I could just drop a script in something like /etc/init.d/ or /etc/rc.d/rc5.d but well... we have launchd instead...).
The first method listed in the page above worked well, but sends an email only on startup (for a reminder: you add a line that starts with @reboot in your crontab, and a command that sends directly an email).
I then tried to adapt the second method to Mac OS X, and succeeded partially: I wrote a small script based on what was shown on that page (a start and stop function, start gets called when the script is started, and stop gets called based on a trap on various kill signals, with an infinite wait loop: see below). I also wrote the plist file, loaded it in launchd and rebooted my Mac several times to test everything.
I get an email on each startup (yeah!), but the shutdown mail gets sent only at the next startup. So I guess that postfix gets killed by the shutdown process *before* being able to send my shutdown email :-(
So here are my main questions, if someone can help me:
1. is there a way to precisely call a script during the shutdown process, meaning giving it a priority so it gets called before postfix dies ? (like the rc directories and the naming conventions (KnnScriptName and SnnScriptName) found on some Linux/Unix).
2. is it possible to do that with launchd ? if not, what would be the Mac OS X sanctionned way of doing this ?

3. my shell script writing ability is kind of rusty, so maybe I made some "very bad shell writingTM": l'm not sure putting an infinite while loop with a 15 second pause in it is the best way of telling a script to do nothing. There might other things in there that would make an Unix guru jump out of his chair: please tell me :-)

Thanks a lot for your answer, Camelot, even if it sorts of confirm what I suspected. Pinging a machine from an external observer is a solution, but it will also report broken links problems and not only a computer shutting down, and it raises the next tier of problems, general network reliability after individual system reliability. It's something I'll have to look at for sure.
It's weird there isn't any way to access the way the shutdown process works.
One of the commenters (#14) on the page from Syntaxtechnology had a similar problem: he added a "sendmail -q" in his script to force sendmail to go to work and service the queue before shutting down, which I can try, but he also added a delay to the stop process of sendmail, which is something I'm not sure I can do on Mac OS X (and that might disappear one day with one of the OS updates).
Unless there is a way to change the launchd.plist file for postfix and add an ExitTimeOut option in it (I found this idea here : https://discussions.apple.com/message/17229690#17229690 )

10.6.1 Slow Startup and Shutdown

Did anyone notice the difference between the 10.6.1 startup and shutdown times and the 10.6 times ?
I had to do a clean install of 10.6 and ignore the 10.6.1 update to get back speed in startup and shutdown.
Is there anyway to solve this.

I had the same problems, and I figured out the cause. It seems that somehow the ownership of my root directory (/) wasn't assigned to the root account anymore, but to myself instead. This made the kernel prelinking fail since it requires that root is the owner. This is how you solve this after launching the Terminal app:

You'll have to enter your password after the first command.
Hope this helps someone, since it was really frustrating to have these slower startup/shutdown times for me.

Slow startup and password issue.

Happy new year...!
As a little christmas present for myself I purchased a Crucial M4 256GB SSD for my MacPro 4,1 (2.26GHz, 22GB RAM, 10.8.2). I'm a semi-pro photographer and wanted a bit of a speed up for my processing etc etc. So yesterday I cloned my existing system drive to the SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner. I then installed the SSD in the spare superdrive bay (my other 4 bays are used).
Just as a background my previous startup/shutdown times on this machine where quite slow averaging around 90s for startup and around 45s for shutdown. I had assumed that this was normal and was just a slow syetm HD issue. When I changed the startup disk to the new SSD and booted up the startup time did decrease but not significantly... its now exactly 59s whilst the shutdown times go down to around 30s. In use the speed of the OS is massively improved with applications and local file copying blazingly fast. I've a few friends who upgraded MacBook Pro's and others macs with SSD's and their startups are around 10-15 seconds....!!! I'm not overly bothered by the slow startups/shutdowns but I am curious as to what might be causing these delays. In testing today I deleted everything unecessary from my user account startup items, disabled various apps and checked the /library/startupitems for anything that shoudnt be there. After a couple of hours trying I cant find anything that is effecting the startups and am lost. I'll likely just accept it and move on as in use the SSD is impressive but if anyone has any ideas it'd be appreciated!
A second thing that has happened is that whenever I try to delete/modify/move an app I am now asked to type in my user password. I have tried repairing permissions, checking the permissions of my .Trash folder etc etc but as of yet nothing has worked. Any ideas...??

The traditional way an Operating System deals with "deleted" files is to remove ONLY the Directory information and simply add the data blocks to the free pool. Those "deleted" data blocks are not cleared.
This works in rotating drives because:
1. The logical block size is the same or larger than the physical drive block size.
2. Rotating magnetic media are block-for-block re-writable.
In SSDs physical blocks are much larger "superblocks", and re-writing a portion of a superblock is a slow and difficult read-modify-write operation. In addition, since the OS did not notify the drive what data are no longer needed, deleted data continue to be carefully maintained and re-written by the drive. Soon every write operation becomes a read-modify-write, and performance deteriorates.
In my opinion, this nearly-full condition is likley to cause drive failure. Something more than wishful thinking is required.
Apple enables TRIM on the drives they install directly. They do not do so for third-party drives, but that is likely because those drives have not been tested by Apple.
I have been using a very small SSD as a boot drive for a while, and periodically consolidate free space followed immediately by erasing free space with a third-party utility. I believe this has kept me out of trouble. My son has been using SSD in his laptop and doing nothing for maintenece, and he has killed two drives in a year.
Trim Enabler utility from groths seems to be working, and makes things simple. Your mileage may vary.

You added a much lower latency drive and startup times did not improve significantly. Much of the time required for startup is needed for memory testing. The rest is largely attributable to disk Read/Write times. What more evidence do you need?

Hard drive both as s startup and Time Machine

Right now I am using an Iomega 360 GB hard drive for Time Machine. I would like to put a system on the Iomega so I can use it as a start up in case something hapens with my computer's startup. If I do this will it erase the year of Time Machine copies I have on it now?
Can the system startup and time machine both be on my Iomega hard drive on the same partition" Or should I have 2 hard drives. One for Time Machine and the other for the system startup?
I'm just a little freaked out because of the trouble I have had with installing Z.6.

360GB is kind of small for a Time Machine drive already (unless the data you are backing up is something like 160GB), so you may not want to install additional stuff on the same drive. However, the Time Machine backup archive is kept in its own folder, so you can put other data on the same drive, including a system installation.
If you are installing Leopard, as long as you don't select to run an +Erase and Install+, and there is no existing system on that drive, the installed system will be added to the existing data.
Ideally, it would be best to have a separate volume that is only used for Time Machine. A volume can be a partition (it does not need to be the whole drive), so you could partition that drive to have a big partition and a small partition (20GB should be enough), and put the emergency startup system on the small partition. If it is for emergency startup, you can Customize the Leopard installation to de-select things you do not need, such as languages, printer drivers, and bundled apps; that will reduce the size of the installation quite a bit. I use an old FireWire-based iPod with a broken screen as my emergency/maintenance startup disk (about 20GB).

Probably should've searched around a bit more. Just saw a similar forum post to my own in which redownloading and burning solved another user's similar issue. As of now I've redownloaded the 64-bit ISO, burned it, and so far so good (at 72% extracting files). I will repost here if it was a success in hopes that other users with a similar issue find this and benefit from it. Hope I didn't just waste anyone's time with a question that had already been answered (haha)

What's the difference between gnome, kde and xfce? Today I heard someone said gnome and kde have more software than xfce. Is that real?

Its really a matter of taste, really. KDE is know to be configurable like hell, GNOME very easy to use, and XFCE lightweitgh.
Keep in mind that whatever desktop environment (DE) you choose, you can use any application in any DE. For example, firefox, a "GTK" application, works without problem under KDE. Or Kile, a latex front-end for KDE, works perfect under Gnome.
Personnally I prefer KDE. But I mostly prefer KDE applications like the editors (Kate/Kwrite) and file manager (dolphin).
KDE is slower to start on my EeePC (really small machine) but because it is full featured, I can cut on number of packages installed, so in the end, with the same functionality, I have more room on my disk then using XFCE!

TRANSACTIONAL [LOCAL]
Performs a planned shutdown of an instance while allowing active transactions to complete first. It prevents clients from losing work without requiring all users to log off.
No client can start a new transaction on this instance. Attempting to start a new transaction results in disconnection. After completion of all transactions, any client still connected to the instance is disconnected. Now the instance shuts down just as it would if a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE statement was submitted. The next startup of the database will not require any instance recovery procedures.
The LOCAL mode specifies a transactional shutdown on the local instance only, so that it only waits on local transactions to complete, not all transactions. This is useful, for example, for scheduled outage maintenance.
Usage
SHUTDOWN with no arguments is equivalent to SHUTDOWN NORMAL.
You must be connected to a database as SYSOPER, or SYSDBA. You cannot connect via a multi-threaded server. For more information about connecting to a database, see the CONNECT command earlier in this chapter.

How to detect windows startup and appdata folder from java?

To read the startup and appdata path I execute the following registry command and capture the foldername from the output:
reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" /v Startup
The path contains the windows users name which may contain international character. The inputstream used to capture the path uses the
default encoding of the platform but it seems to get it wrong - international characters looks wrong and any subsequent use of the path
throws FileNotFoundException.
What is the right way to detect theese folders or is there a fix to my current folder detection shown below?

To answer my original post.
I found what I believe is a robust (although somewhat complex if you havent touched C code i more than 10 years like me) method to read the windows registry keys.
I call the following native windows unicode functions using the JNA api:
advapi32.RegOpenKeyExW
advapi32.RegQueryValueExW
Notice the W at the end - those functions encode character strings using wide character encoding UTF-16LE (Little Endian). Now nothing is "lost in translation"...
Wont post the kode here since it spans multiple srcfiles and is rather involved - but there are many good samples on the JNA site.

Resolution wrong at startup and after sleep

I have a one display: a Cornea with a max resolution of 1280 X 1024 and 60 Hz. Lots of times at startup and almost always after waking up from sleep the resolution is reset to 1152 X 870. When I "detect displays" it resets correctly. What's the problem?

Search Apple main page for OnyX and run all the Automation followed by a reboot.
Look in OnyX for a plutil utility and check your preference files (.plists) for corruption. Seek and destroy, it will be rebuilt when you reboot and reload the app.
Set your sleep to something low, like a few minutes and leave the Displays Pane open until the sleep takes affect. Then set the sleep a bit longer and this time exit System Preferences. See if that fixes it.
It's like System Preferences has to create a new file or link up to one or something. Worked for me with a setting problem.
Clone that boot drive for peace of mind.

Spontaneous startups and shutdowns

Ever since I got my G5 in 2004, I've had spontaneous startup/shutdown problems. I will wake up in the morning or come home from work and find the computer on and at the login prompt (I have set no such predetermined startup time.) Or, I'll be working and all of a sudden it powers down and then powers back up (it will bring me back to the same screen and what I was doing), but after repeated occurrences of shutdown/startup, usually in short succession, it will permanently shut down, requiring me to shut off the battery backup into which it is plugged to reset the whole system. Then things settle down for a while. Then a month or two later, it will go through another bad spate of spontaneous startups and shutdowns, almost like it just got over a cold only to contract a new one.
At first, Apple said it was a motherboard problem which they replaced; that didn't solve my problem. Then they said it was a bad video cable to the monitor and repaired that; that didn't solve my problem, either. They asked if I had any peripherals (printer, scanner, external HD) hooked up and said such items can cause erratic behavior (to which I felt like asking "then why do you manufacture your computers with ports in them so users CAN plug in other devices?") I've given up taking it to them because I can't make it replicate its erratic behavior and unless they see what it's doing, they can't do anything about it (and I don't think they really believe me, anyway...)
I've reset my PRAM. I've reset my SMU (actually that happens every time I shut down the computer because I shut down the battery backup every time to prevent unsupervised morning startup.) I've run Disk Warrior. I've checked and confirmed my power source. I've literally unplugged everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) and re-connected all components. All to no avail. I even have video of it happening because Apple doesn't believe what I'm describing. Is it possible that my computer has been infected and is one of those "slave computers" that hackers use to do their bidding? I've wondered about that...
Has anyone else experienced this?

It almost sounds like a bad UPS.
Have you tried bypassing the UPS? What is the rating of the thing?
