Gnome strange language display

I installed gnome on arch, everything works perfectly (sound, keyboard, mouse...). But all icons names, menus names... all writings in gnome display squares [][][][][]. What can be wrong.

What language are you using for your system? English?
Look at the file called:
/etc/locale.gen
And make sure that you've uncommented the correct language lines. Then run locale-gen as root.

Firefox 4 -- just downloaded and menu & top bars are in some strange language - not english. I can't seem to get to a tools menu to change the language because I can't read the top menu.

Just downloaded Firefox4 and can't read the top line menu because it's in some strange language with symbols instead of letters. How do I get it to display English in the top line menu?
If I could read the menu, I'd go to tools and see if there were an option to change the menu language, but since I can't read the menu choices, I'd only be pushing meaningless buttons.

Thanks. I tried it and get the attached screen. I don't see anything which lets me change the language in the menu.
Before I give up completely & just stick with Chrome or IE, I'll bring my laptop which has a correctly configured version of firefox 4 side by side with my desktop & use it as a template for clicking on the correct gibberish lines. I still don't see an option for changing menu bar language, but I'll search around a bit.
It would help if I could get phone contact with someone at Mozilla, but they don't seem to list a phone number on their help page ----

Strange text display in pdf using adobe reader exported by Indesign CS5

Hi there,
I have export an interactive pdf from indesign CS5 PC version with version 7 update, and it looks fine in most of the PC and Mac Adobe reader.
But 2 of the computer had strange text display. One is the iMAC with latest version of Adobe Reader

But with the same computer using Safari with perview plugin is showing following result:

The pdf is embedded with following fonts and property:
Another Windows XP with Adobe Acrobat 9 will had same display as the iMac.
I ensure the Windows XP don't have the font installed with HelveticaNeue and the Mac is using OS Lion Bundle with that font.
Now the customer blame it is the problem of the pdf created by me and I had no idea how to explain to my customer and find out solution.
I had a trial version of CC but same result and no error during the export.
Any idea is highly appreciate. The customer hotline and the live chat is hopeless as they send me to this community to ask since I use CS5 not the latest version.

I had the fonts of Helvetica Neue bold light etc which created by Adobe and the font was created in 1993,shown in font property.
my PDF output is set to interactive not the print one. Other settings are default.
the purpose of this PDF is for user to print out and read on website. The funny thing is print out had no problem at all with HP and Ricoh printer using PCL 6 driver.
Despite Safari, the strange font happened in only Adobe product, other PDF reader had no problem such as foxit reader, xchange reader.
I tried to not embed the font but not able to do indesign, search in Google, it said it always embedded. Also that font family is preloaded in Mac OS.
I can try any test if there is a way to find out the solution.
or what should I do so the PDF should display correctly in all computer

Itunes 10: East Asian languages displayed as boxes in certain areas

I just got a new computer, and moved all my music to my new computer, and installed Itunes 10. But for some reason, if I try to edit my song's info (Right click on song, 'Get Info') the titles and everything that's in another language displays as boxes. The song title itself when in Itunes displays properly, but only in the 'Get Info' box does all my Chinese, Japanese, and Korean song information turn into little boxes. It's not my computer's problem, as it displays all these languages properly. The problem lies with Itunes, but none of the help topics really do anything. Can anyone help me out please?

As you can see, boxes in the info editing areas, but everywhere else, it displays properly.

In case anyone else comes across this problem -
It turns out that the fontconfig.properties approach is a bit of a red herring (at least in this example).
I've resolved the issue by adding a method to my bean to specify a different font for english and chinese language users. For chinese language users I specify Font = "Simsun-18030" and for each AWT component explicitly setFont( new Font( "Simsun-18030", Font.PLAIN, 14 ) ) Now AWT components displaying chinese characters are rendered correctly with no need to modify any config files on the client PC.
- NB font appears smaller for pointsize than english fonts.
- Using "SimSun" as the font also works but text in english is not displayed very clearly
- On windows you must install east asian language support for this to work (Start -Run - intl.cpl - languages tab)

Why is the link between iPhoto & Facebook in a strange language?

I have just purchased iPhoto and when I post a photo to Facebook a page comes up about where on Facebook I want the photo ,put it is in a very strange language even those I have chosen english as the language.

I found the solution!
One of the User in my MacBookPro was saved with an old version of FileVault. I deaktivated this old FileVault and aktivate the new FileVault and the language of the login Windows is sudenly german!

Problem report coming up in a strange language

i got a problem report pop up from Firefox today, usually it's not an issue but this came up in a strange language, one i had never seen before, every language is sent to English ive checked everything, worried somebody could be accessing my iMac from another location, did the usual net stat, last press & users commands and it hasn't come up with anything untoward, just a little worried about it cos it was really strange. anyone know what happend?

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I didn't screen shot it when it happened, alls I can say is that it was the regular problem report box, but in a foreign language, like Turkish or something like that.. nothing strange has happened on my iMac since then just found it weird.

Korean language display problem

Most of the Korean language on my ipod touch display correctly, however some of it displays as strange combinations of characters that are not Korean such as apostrophes, upside down exclamation points, degree symbol, english letters with other countries' accent marks over them. What I see on the touch is the same as is displayed on my computer in Windows. Is the source of the problem with Windows or something else? Can I get around this manually and add my own text to replace what is displayed?

Can you tell me how I go about encoding the ID3 tags as Unicode?
You may be able to enter the tags manually in iTunes via File > Get Info. There is also an app called ConvertZ, but I think it only does Chinese and Japanese.

Foreign Language displaying in "Styles"

I have an iMac running OS X 10.6.2. It has a Spanish Keyboard and the system is set up to run with The Spanish Keyboard but with English as the default language. I've also set up Russian input language support via an on-screen keyboard.
Everything is fine until I use an Apple application that uses text styles (Bold, Italic etc.) Instead of seeing the various styles in the style menus, they've all been converted to Russian. Everything else displays in english with no problem.
The strange thing is when I use Microsoft Office for Mac, I don't get this problem, so it only seems to affect iWork applications, Text Edit and iPhoto (when creating an book or calendar).
Does anyone know how to resolve this problem

I've also set up Russian input language support via an on-screen keyboard.
Have you perhaps downloaded and installed some old non-Unicode russian fonts instead of using what already comes with OS X?
they've all been converted to Russian.

Strange characters displaying in FR pdf and excel export

We are using Financial Reporting on a Planning application. We have a dimension, projects, whose aliases display on the report. Now the strange part. On some projects, not all, during some report runs, but not all, some, but not all, of the spaces in the alias are translated into a question mark in the pdf, and then when the pdf is exported to excel, the question marks are translated into black diamonds with a question mark inside.
We’ve seen it happen on a handful of projects. These are from the same report, first one from report ran Monday, second one from report ran yesterday.

Ok, the diamonds won't paste into this message. But you can see the little squares in the second line - those are the diamonds with question marks inside.
Has anyone seen this behavior before? Or know what to do about it?

I've seen similar items with 2 causes:
1. When creating the alias names, the DBAs copied from emails and pasted the names in, which caused the formatting issues. Solution, get them to remove the existing alias and retype manually.
I think this is probably your problem too.
2. Font substitution: The other time was due to differing fonts installed on the developer, print server and BI server machines, causing some incorrect items to be displayed - check that the fonts are the same on all servers/instances.

I created sapscript for billing document using the standard form RVINVOICE01.
for a customer sales order will be created, then delivery will be created and finally billing will be done.
suppose if i have some three customers such as A1, B1, C1.
if sale order, delivery, billing is created for C1 customer. so only for that particular customer I need to display script in french and rest of other customer i need to display the script in english. So how to do this?

Well if you are giving output in a particular Language the billing document has to be entered in NAST with that particular language. Please check the NAST entries with the output type and application = V3 and language = Italian this will give you the Italian language Billing Document number(s).
You can then go to VF03 and see the output of the Script.

CMYK images: strange monitor display & and printing

I tried the way Pages 2 handles CMYK images today and found out some strange things.
My problem: monitor display
CMYK .jpg files are displayed inverted on screen like a negative - black is white and white is black. Layouting basicly rendered useless. Is there a work arround ?
Solved: Printing
For printing there are at least two ways to get a decent result. Here my findings:
- Any color printers
"Print - ColorSync - Color Conversion" set to "Standard" => CMYK images get converted to RGB
"Print - ColorSync - Color Conversion" set to "Printer specific" => CMYK images stay in CMYK if printer is able to print CMYK
- use "Save to PDF" within printing dialog
Same as above, profiles tagged to images stay correct
- Adobe Acrobat Distiller
Same as above, but PDF looses recognizeable profile information. PDF workflow software does not recognize "SWOP" or "ISOcoated" by name but has "Embedded Adobe Postscript CRD Profile" instead which will create problems in workflow processing.
- Exporting "File - Export - PDF"
Profiles stay intact and are handled correctly.

Strange multiple display problem

I have two displays hooked up to my powermac G4 733 (still works great).
recently after I launched Avid Xpress Pro (I'm sure it's the cause), one of the display's stopped working. It's not getting signal from the computer.
The strange part is that in the displays section of my system prefs, the second display is showing up (it's also showing up on my system hardware list in "about this mac")
Even under arrangement the second display shows up.
I do know that the connection between comp.-monitor is good. When I hit "detect displays" the other screen does come on and flashes twice showing a mirroring of the left monitor (even though mirror displays isn't checked).
I reinstalled the OS, but didn't help. Any ideas?

Unplug the power. Open up the G4 and press the CUDA button. It is a small black button located on the Motherboard. Press and hold it for 3 seconds. Then plug back in and restart. That will reset the motherboard, not sure if this will do the trick but give it a try.

Foreign language display?

Hi, I'm using a A305-S6898 and I want to view Japanese websites, but the characters come out in a bunch of square symbols. I know I was able to read it before I reinstalled the vista, but something happened and now I cant read them. Please help!

Sounds like you're really missing something. Try adding Japanese as a display language.
