Gnome: switch between users without the applet

Hi,
I just found out how to trigger the "switch to another user session" stuff in gdm/ConsoleKit without the applet.
The problem was: I'd like to share a laptop with my girlfriend, but she doesn't like my environment (i3, vimperator, ...). So I installed a full Gnome desktop including gdm. Everything is nice, except the user switching stuff. You can use the gdm-user-switch-applet from within gnome sessions, but not from other ones (like my plain i3 one).
I started to look at the source code of this applet, read about dbus and stuff, and finally got something working. I'm so proud :-)
If you are interested, here's the script:
https://bitbucket.org/resi/gdm-switch-user
It seems possible to switch to any available session, but I'm satisfied activating the gdm session, at least for now.
Christoph

Hi,
I hope you have already solved this issues.
In the template properties you can set the setting for Display Variable Sceen only once.
Cheers.

  • Forced to Close all open applications when switching between users.

    I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 13 inch, and have 2 accounts set up on the computer.
    When switching between users on the computer, I am always forced to close all open applications on the current user, in order to switch to another user.
    I was wondering if there was ANY way to keep the pages (specifically Safari) open when switching to another user, so that I can go back to them when I log back in to the other account.
    thanks for the help!

  • Switch between user accounts - graphics

    How do I set up Snow Leopard so that when I switch between user accounts the screen gives the appearance of swiveling on an axis?

    That is strange, I never noticed before, but I just tested a few scenarios, it looks like it only rotates on the first login of another user... OR... after another user logs out and you choose another logged in one.

  • Move an iTunes library between users on the same mac

    How do I move an iTunes library between users on the same mac?
    I accidentally created a secondary user on my mac some time ago when using the migration tool and am now going back and transferring all my files from the secondary to the admin user profile.
    I wanted to know which itunes files/folders need to be copied over.
    Is the process as simple as replacing the itunes folder on admin with the copied itunes folder from my secondary profile or do I need to delete the admin folder first and then copy the old folder over or do I delete the contents of the folder and replace with the copied contents?
    I am using shared folders to move between users, but want to make sure that I am picking the right files to transfer.
    Thanks in advance.

    Assuming you have left iTunes to default settings so everything is still in the iTunes folder the way iTunes likes it to be, copy the whole of the iTunes folder to the new location.  If it is in the default directory (Home > Music) for iTunes the application will automatically use it there for the new account.  If you put it elsewhere you will have to start iTunes and immediately hold down the option key to direct it to the new location.
    It is just possible you will have to change permissions.  If you encounter those issues read the part about changing permissions on the iTunes folder in: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11583914

  • How to switch between messages in the BlackBerry Hub

    With the release of BlackBerry 10 version 10.1, we’ve added a new gesture to the BlackBerry Hub that allows you to quickly switch between your next and previous messages. It’s simple: while viewing a message drag your finger from the left to the right and in one continuous motion swipe up or down.
    For example, in the following screenshot you’ll notice I am viewing ‘Test 08”. To get to the next message, “Test 09”, all I need to do is swipe from left to right (red arrow) followed by swiping up (green arrow) in a single motion. To switch to the previous message, “Test 07”, I complete the same gesture, but swipe down instead (blue arrow).
    Tip: Using a BlackBerry Q10 or Q5? On top of using this gesture to switch between messages, you also have the option of pressing the N key to view your next message, or the P key to view a previous message.
    If this gesture doesn’t appear to be working on your device, verify you are using BlackBerry 10.1.0.4181 or later by going to Settings > About and reviewing the OS Version field. If the OS Version is lower than 10.1.0.4181, check for updates by going to Settings > Software Updates.
    For more details about the availability of BlackBerry 10.1, check out Inside BlackBerry’s post on BlackBerry 10 Software Updates.

    I would set up a variable before you get to that node, lets call it $EmpID and assign to it the value of the prompt you want to play lets say 12345 which would be the library promptID. It will then play prompt, get digits, and once you validate if it goes through the expression that flags it as invalid, in that node re-declare the variable, but this time give it the value of the new prompt you want to play, then sent it back to the node which will then play the new prompt and collect the digits.

  • Distance Between user and The kinect Device

    Hey all :)
    how to get the distance between user and the kinect ??
    i found a function but it's in kinect v1
    public static double GetSkeletonDistance(this Skeleton skeleton)
                return (skeleton.Position.X * skeleton.Position.X) +
                       (skeleton.Position.Y * skeleton.Position.Y) +
                       (skeleton.Position.Z * skeleton.Position.Z);
    i don't know how to make it under kinect v2 ?

    Joint head = body.Joints[JointType.hipCentre];
    return head.Position.Z ;
    it always return 0 :/
    There is no hipCentre in Kinect v2 SDK. Have a look at
    JointType Enumeration. There you can see all the available JointTypes. I am using the
    SpineBase , because users may lean from time to time. So
    return body.Joints[JointType.SpineBase].Position.Z;
    should give you a nice distance. Keep in mind, that even the smallest changes will affect this value. So if you want to check for a distance, you might want to use a threshold or even joint accumulation.
    Best regards,
    Alex

  • Switching Between User Names Without Password???

    Is there a way to toggle back and forth between 2 user accounts without constantly having to type in the password when switching from one user to the other?  Props to whoever can help with this headache.

    DON'T do this if either of your two accounts is an admin account.  A passwordless admin account is a serious security risk.
    Make a third account if you need to, make it admin, and then change the other two to standard, before removing their passwords.  That offers much better security.

  • Switching USB Scanner Between Users on the Same Machine - Mavericks 10.9.3

    I have a neat scanner connected to my mac via USB.  My wife and I both use the scanner and have separate accounts on the same machine.
    The issue is that the scanner gets "connected" to either one user or the other.  Let's say the scanner is working fine for user A.  User B can't
    use the scanner properly.  It seems like first come first serve.  When user B pushes the scan button on the device and user B is the active account
    on OSX.  User A's account still gets the popup window responding to the scan request.
    I guess I am looking for a terminal command, or some procedure, so that user B can come in and gain access to the scanner without logging out user A.
    Ideally some kind of USB release / reset command etc. etc.

    For posterity, here is one solution to the problem I discovered:  cycle power on the scanner.
    Cycling power seems to release ownership.  Whichever user then uses the scanner next will then latch ownership.  To break ownership another power cycle is required.  Easy enough I guess since the scanner is connected by USB (and therefore close to the computer).  A little surprised that the OS does not manage this automatically.

  • Fast switch between users

    I wonder why it is not possible to swtich between users witout entering a password. I have a test user and often have to switch between my account and that of the test user. Now, if there were a way to exchange certificates like in SSH the switching would be possible without tedious entering of passwords. Has nobody thought about that?

    Here is another way to approach the problem.  Instead of Fast User Switching, use Screen Sharing.  But I did have to play some tricks to get the Screen Sharing client to allow me to access a testaccount on the same Mac.
    System Preferences -> Sharing -> Screen Sharing.  Enable AND Allow the testaccount to use Screen Sharing.
    System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Login.  Enable AND Allow the testaccount to be accessed via ssh.
    Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal (this is where I play a trick on Screen Sharing)
    ssh -L 59222:localhost:5900 localhost
    You are using ssh to create a tunnel that will trick Screen Sharing into thinking it is NOT connecting to itself.  When ssh prompts for a password, it expects your own password.
    Finder -> Go -> Connect to server... -> vnc://testaccount@localhost:59222
    You will be prompted for the 2nd account's password.
    You will then be asked to "Share Display" or "Log In".  Choose "Log In" and a new Fast User Session will be started, and you will have access to it via Screen Sharing.
    No need to actually Fast User Switch, Just use the Screen Sharing session to access your testaccount's session.
    You can also attach a Screen Sharing session after having started the testaccount via Fast User Switching.
    The 2 key items above (besides making sure System Preferences is setup correctly) 1) creating an ssh tunnel to trick Screen Sharing, 2) using the vnc://testaccount@localhost:59222 from Finder -> Go -> Connect to server.
    Bonus points.  From "Another" Terminal session (NOT the one running ssh), you can start Screen Sharing WITHOUT using the Finder via 'open' command:
    open vnc://testaccount@localhost:59222
    The -L 59222:localhost:5900 syntax has rules.  The 5900 is the Screen Sharing server port number (aka the VNC server port number).  The 59222 is a number I picked out of the air.  It is less then 65535 and larger than the low numbered well known port numbers, so it is not going to interfere.  The 59222 is the port number you tell Screen Sharing, via the Finder or 'open' command, where Screen Sharing can find the Screen Sharing server it is suppose to use.

  • Switching between user groups

    Hello,
    Is it possible to switch between two portals without having a user to log
    out of the portal after the user selects a group portal when a user belongs
    to two groups? How can I go about that?
    I am thinking of creating a link webflow item to start, then retrieve the
    groups the user belongs to other than the groups of the portal currently
    logged in. Then switch to the other portal, preferrably without having to
    re-authenticate the user.
    Thank you,
    Makoto

    Yes the 2 portals are of the same web app and a domain. In fact they are the
    same portal app, just showing different content depending on the group user
    belong to.
    Thanks!
