Gnome terminal cannot open http links

I have a gnome DE with openbox as my window manager and I use gnome-terminal. Normally when there is a http:// link I can right click and select "open link" to have it opened in a tab in firefox. However, recently I now get an error message:
Could not open the address "http://google.com" Operation not supported
I also tested this in another terminal emulator, sakura, and found that links don't open either, just with no error message. In other applications, for example thunderbird, links open in firefox correctly.
My gnome gconf seems to be set correctly.
cat .gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/%gconf.xml
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<gconf>
<entry name="needs_terminal" mtime="1282144051" type="bool" value="false"/>
<entry name="enabled" mtime="1282144051" type="bool" value="true"/>
<entry name="command" mtime="1282144051" type="string">
<stringvalue>/usr/lib/firefox-3.6/firefox &quot;%s&quot;</stringvalue>
</entry>
</gconf>
Any ideas?

Does this mean that gnome actually starts when you run startx, but that you tried to run the command gnome-session directly from the commandline and this doesn't start X? In that case, everything is exactly as it's supposed to be...
Gnome requires the X Window System in order to run. The command gnome-session is used to start gnome, but it won't start X - so if you try running gnome-session without a running X-server, it will fail. You are therefore supposed to configure ~/.xinitrc to run the windowmanger of your choice (in this case gnome-session), and use the command startx when you want to launch X and gnome.

• Cannot open some links

I clicked a bad page the other day and installed some malware. I [carefully] removed them manually, but perhaps I deleted a wrong registry key. Anyway, I'm left a little bit lame as I cannot open some links or pages, and I cannot restore previous versions
of Windows.
Win 7 home
IE 11
Issues:
1. Wikipedia .png images will not respond at all to a left-click. I can open them by right-clicking.
2.  wordpress.com the reader link and a few other links hang.
generates the error Line: 4235
== Error: The system cannot find the file specified.
The line of code is ... if( !window.localStorage ){
3. System restore would not restore previous versions. It was unchecked in system, and I have since re-enabled it and allocated space. I have not tested it.
actions performed:
- Googled for a day and a half
- tried re-registering dlls
- checked file associations
- reset security and settings in IE
- ran IE with no add ons
- ran IE in safe mode
- rolled back to IE 10 and reinstalled IE 11 (with much pain with failing updates needing manual uninstallations)
I am now at a loss at what to try next for the IE issues. Any help or ideas will be appreciated. I'd rather not reinstall or upgrade right now.
Thanks
John

Hi Power Unit.
Considering the machine has been injected by some malware,I suggested you to perform a full scan with the antivirus software in safe mode to have a double check .
According to your description ,it seems that there is something wrong with system files.We can run "sfc /scannow"to have a health check of the system files.
I noticed you have tried to reinstall the Internet Explorer 11 .How did you do that ?
We can run the following command line to uninstall the Internet Explorer 11 and then download it to install it .
"FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart"
Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7
http://www.microsoft.com/en-hk/download/internet-explorer-11-for-windows-7-details.aspx
If the issue persists ,we may need to do a in-place upgrade to have a repair .We may lose some configurations.Here is a link for reference :

• Using the ipad with ios7, cannot open mail links

I cannot open mail links on the ipad using ios7.  Anyone else having this problem?

I can confirm that I'm having the same issue on my verizon iphone 4 on ios 7. If I click a link in an e-mail sent to me through the IOS mail app, safari often does not open. I've noticed that some pages will open. For example. A friend sent me a link to a story on imore.com. The link to the story would not open in safari. Dead. However, a separate link in the e-mail to the main site, imore.com DID open in safari when I tapped on it. I've had this issues with links not working for the last 2-3 weeks, and for whatever reason a reboot of the phone (hold down on/off and home, wait for logo, release buttons) has temporarily fixed the issue.

When I send my ical link to my better half , who sadly, still uses a windows based system- He cannot open the link back to my calendar- any help?

I've been using iCloud since it's inception as "mac.com" or whatever it was called. I've been able to Sync Outlook Exchange Calenars to my iMac, iPhone and iPad. However, I cannot get iCal (when viewed in iCloud) to display Exchange or Google Calender items.
It's odd, all other Mac versions of iCal are happy e.g. iMac, MacBook Air, iPad Air, iPhone etc. But nothing when I login to icloud.com and look at the iCal there.

• Safari 6.0 (on Mac OS X 10.8) will not open https links

Hi,
I would not be able to post this if I were not using Firefox.  Ever since I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8 with Safari 6.0, I have not been able to open a single https link.  Safari help says to make sure you are on the Latest OS, the latest browser and use Disk Utility to clean up your directories.  I ran disk utility before installing, then Upgraded the OS which included Safari.
On EVERY https linke on Safari 6.0 I get "Safari cannot open this page".  At the moment, it's forcing me to use FIREFOX as my default browser as Safari can't open any secure sites whatsoever.   I have Google'd this issue and found a lot of discussion from the past, but no clear solutions, and Safari help has been anything but help.  Either this is major bug, or I am missing a setting or something, and having spent an hour googling for solutions I am resorting to posting here via Firefox since Safari for me at least is severely crippled.
Steve

Found this solution in another thread:
Solution was to stop rapport, quit and restart Safari, turn rapport back on, then quit and restart Safari, all now working.

• Cannot open web links in mail

I have three mail accounts setup in Apple Mail app:  Gmail, work email and Me.com email.  Whenever I receive an email with a hyperlink in it I hover over the link and it displays the hyperlink address with "blocked" added to the beginning.  Once I click on the link I receive a message which says "Error:  No associated application could be found".  This happens no matter which email account I am accessing and works with both http and https type links.  I recall having a similar problem using MS Outlook on a Windows machine.  I am relatively new to Mac but am learning.  I am using an early 2011 Macbook Pro.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes it helped mostly.  My work emal is a government account and it will not open any links.  So, I think it is a security setting within their servers.  But I can open links in Gmail and ME.  Thanks for the quick solution!

• HT1694 Cannot open email links since updating iPad to iOS 7

I cannot open links in emails since I updated my iPad to iOS 7

I was having the same issue with my iPhone 5 iOS 7 and support resolved the issue for me.  Here are the steps from support:
clear your Cookies and History. Go to Settings > Safari > Click on Clear History then Clear Cookies and Data. When that's finished hard reset the iPhone. Make sure your device is not plugged into the computer right now. Press the circle home button and the power button together for about 10 - 15 seconds or until until you see an Apple. Then you can release the buttons and the device will power itself back up. Then try the link from your email.

• Cannot open many links

I have been using Safari 3.2.3 on a G4 Powerbook running OS 10.4.11. For no apparent reason I can no longer open many links, which appear in web pages, by clicking them. These seem to be primarily those that offer free application downloads, Nor will they open if I copy and paste them in the Address Field. In both cases the status bar starts to move across the address but then shoots to the end and finally retreats to the beginning. I have found no way to open any of these links, which means I could not download Safari 3.2.3 to reload it. I also could not download Firefox. I did download Safari 3.2.3, using Netscape that was already in my applications folder, but reloading it did not solve the problem. Running the original Software and Restore disc that came with the computer didn’t help either.
I would very much appreciate any help in getting back the full functionality of Safari.
Thank you
Ted Stampfer

I deleted all the mentioned files, restarted, and still had the same problem. To make sure everything was deleted I looked in each of the folders and found that history.plist, lastsession.plist, and webpageicons.db were back in library/safari. I deleted them again, restarted safari, and they were back; I still can’t download many files.
Would reinstalling OS, 10.4.11 solve the problem? I hate the thought of doing it, particularly a clean install. I think I remember way back in OS 9, or maybe 8 or earlier, there was another, not quite so severe, option. Was that what is now called “archive and install”? Are all the bugs worked out Leopard?

• Why I cannot open a link in a new tab, since I upgraded firefox to the latest version ?

I can't open a google search option in a new tab, since I upgraded Firefox to version 33.0. I also cannot downgrade firefox, to solve this problem.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes). See the Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode article for more information.
If Open Link in new tab works in Safe mode, one of the extensions/add-ons (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) was causing the problem. Then let us know what extension or plugin are you using that causes this problem.
You can also try the Reset Firefox Feature. The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.
See the Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems article for more information.
To Reset Firefox:
# Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
#*Click the menu button , click help and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
#*If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
#At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Reset Firefox" that looks like this: . Click on it.
#Firefox will close and reset. After it is done, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
#Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.
Did this fix the problem? Please report back to us!
Thank you.

• I cannot open PDF links in Firefox. However, I can open those same links with Internet Explorer. This failure has happened since downloading FF 4.0. What did that "upgrade" change so that these PDF links do not open?

I use TD Waterhouse Webbroker, which has links to PDF documents. These links have always opened - that is until I "upgraded" to the latest Firefox version (I think it's 4.0). Now those same PDFs do not open. I cross-checked with the arch enemy, Internet Explorer. Those same PDFs opened in Internet Explorer. So Firefox, what did you do in the latest "upgrade" that has altered the way the browser handles PDF files on Webbroker??

Hi tlaclair, when I click that link, here is what I see (observed using the Fiddler2 program, which intercepts web traffic between your browser and websites):
(1) The server at link.p0.com sets 1 cookie and redirects to http://t.mookie1.com/t/v1/event?migClientId=181&migAction=email-click&migSource=mig&migDest=http%3a%2f%2forder.dominos.com
(2) Firefox follows the redirect and the server at t.mookie1.com sets 3 cookies and redirects to http://order.dominos.com
(3) Firefox follows the redirect and the server at order.dominos.com redirects to a secure session ()
These kinds of redirects are completely standard; if you set Firefox to warn you about redirects, then a bar usually appear below the address where you can click an Allow button to continue. You can check whether you have this feature turned on here:
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced > General
If Firefox isn't blocking the redirect, it's possible that one of your add-ons is doing it. A standard diagnostic for interference by add-ons is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Backing up your information. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode (Safe Mode) using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the Safe Mode dialog, do not check any boxes, just click "Continue in Safe Mode."
If the link works correctly, this points to one of your add-ons or custom settings as the problem.
Any change?
