Gnome terminal suddenly fails to start

My laptop died because the battery failed, as a result, after rebooting, gnome-terminal fails to start with:
(process:3967): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
        Using the fallback 'C' locale.
(gnome-terminal:3967): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk-widgets.css:2:19: Theming engine 'adwaita' not found
(gnome-terminal:3967): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk-main.css:168:30: Failed to import: Error opening file: No such file or directory
Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.gnome.Terminal exited with status 8
I couldn't find anything on status 8..:-/

Make sure your locale is set correctly, and that you have uncommented your relevant UTF-8 language.
See here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … ide#Locale
Then try rebooting.
gnome-terminal 3.14.x requires a unicode locale to work, with some luck the other warnings should also disappear.

  • Out of the box approval workflow suddenly failed on start (retrying)

SharePoint 2010. I've been using out of the box approval workflow for several month now. I did some minor changes to it, like to who and when emails should be send, but that's all.
Then out of a sudden it stopped working. New request status is "Failed on start (retrying)". Sometimes (!) status is "In Progress", but no tasks are created. In both cases there is nothing on workflow history and error report is also empty
(it even cause an error "Report contains no data").
I'm sure that I didn't change anything in a workflow. The only think that I changed was an InfoPath form, but I only added there field "Created By", so I would see in calendar later who created this request. I couldn't see how this might affect workflow
    process.
I'm confused as I don't even know where to start searching for the solution. Why this might happen? Any ideas are very welcome!

In my list I have a multiple choice field which is not required. When it was
blank my workflow was failing on start! This field was not involved in a workflow directly, I included it only in the email to approver. When I deleted it from an email everything was fine.

  • Weblogic 8.1 suddenly failing to start at the 1536MB level

We are running WebLogic Server 8.1 SP5 on Windows Server 2003 SP2. We have been running weblogic for a long time with a memory allocation of 1.5GB (1536MB). But all of a sudden, it wouldn't start giving the following error.
"Error occured during initialization of VM. Could not reserve enough space for object heap"
But if I drop the startup memory parameter to "-Xms968m -Xmx968m" it comes up successfully. Basically I tried through different numbers and then found out that it craps out beyond the 968MB level. As you can see below the server has enough memory. Does anybody have a solution to this?
Server and startup configurations are below:
    WebLogic Server 8.1 SP5
    Windows Server 2003 SP2
    Server memory - 3GB
    Server virtual memory - 2GB
    running on vmware ESX
weblogic gets started through Windows services with the following startup parameters:
    -server -Xms1536m -Xmx1536m -XX:MaxPermSize=128m -XX:NewSize=128m -XX:MaxNewSize=128m -XX:SurvivorRatio=4 -verbosegc -XX:+PrintGCDetails -classpath "........."
    -Dweblogic.Name=myserver -Dweblogic.management.username= -Dweblogic.ProductionModeEnabled= -Djava.security.policy="C:\bea\WEBLOG~1\server\lib\weblogic.policy" weblogic.Server

Does Window Task manger report enough available physical memory before you attempt to start server ?

  • GNOME Fails to start - Polkit? Main.js? - Receive 'Oops' message.

Been using Arch for years but this is my first problem surprisingly so posting it in this Newbies section.
I have MATE, KDE, and FLUXBOX working fine as desktop environments for years. Thought I would give GNOME a try and no matter what I've tried I cannot get it working. All I get is a sad face with an 'OOPS' message on screen. Although I am prompted to enter my WiFi password presumably from NetworkManager. None of the errors listed below turn up much on Google so I thought I'd turn to the community. Any help getting GNOME working correctly would be very much appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] gnome-terminal won't start

Well, first of all good day and thanks in advance.
gnome-terminal is not launching. I get:
    ERROR:terminal-app.c:1433:terminal_app_init: assertion failed: (app->system_font_desc != NULL)
This started with no particular trigger, and now i am using aterm, but i like better gnome-terminal, so any help would be appreciated.
Last edited by evildrake (2009-07-24 16:37:48)

Seems like a font issue, try this:
    gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=Default
Else you can try editing the settings using gconf-editor.

  • Cannot start xconsole or gnome-terminal after update

I use fluxbox, and I have gnome-terminal bound to a keyboard shortcut as well as a menu item. However, since upgrading to GNOME 2.26, gnome-terminal would not start. There is no visual indication of failure; the window just doesn't show up.
I also tried xconsole (by adding xconsole to the menu through TTY), and I get a message saying simply that "couldn't open console"
I read something about the permissions of /dev/console not being set probably, and that commenting out lines in /etc/fbtab would help, but no such table file exists on my system.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I am not sure whether the following patch makes sense but it fixes aforementioned problems with gnome-terminal.

  • [Solved] Gnome-terminal does not start (fresh install)

Whenever I install gnome-terminal, I have the following message displayed:
(gconftool-2:28984): GConf-WARNING **: Client failed to connect to the D-BUS daemon:/usr/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally without any error message
Then whenever I launch gnome-terminal I have this message:
    ** (gnome-terminal:1102): CRITICAL **: atk_bridge_adaptor_cleanup: assertion `inited' failed
The problem seems to be related to dbus. I have even tried guake which complains explicitly about "No D-BUS daemon running".
Systemctl is telling me that d-bus is up and running.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,

I just remembered to do that.....
Think I have found my problem.
The Arch Wiki for Gnome 3 has the line for installing to a new system
    # pacman -Syu testing/gnome
This installs gnome 3, but does not include gnome-shell or gnome-panel
Just installing them now. Will report back shortly.
Maybe the Wiki should be updated to reflect this, or the package testing/gnome updated to depend on gnome-shell and gnome-panel.
    Cheers.

  • [SOLVED] gnome-terminal 3.12 won't start

After I upgraded to gnome 3.12, I my terminal refused to start with the error "Message did not receive a reply". It turns out that the issue was that I had previously installed vte3-mosh-fix from the AUR, and the new version of gnome-terminal was incompatible with that old version of vte3. Running "pacman -S vte3" fixed the problem for me. (And I think that mosh fix has been incorporated into the latest version too.) Posting in case anyone else runs into this.

The patch was indeed merged into the upstream, it's the only reason I haven't updated the PKGBUILD.

  • [SOLVED] apache daemon fails to start on boot, but rc.d restart works?

I installed apache from the official repos and followed the instructions in the wiki for configuring it. I checked to make sure the http user exists, and I /etc/hosts looks good (to me). Upon boot, the daemon fails to start and I can't load local web pages, but running "rc.d restart httpd" works just fine. Since I'd rather not start it manually every time I boot, is there a way to fix this? Also, httpd is the last daemon in my DAEMONS array.
    /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
    # This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
    # configuration directives that give the server its instructions.

The SIGTERM are from reboots, yes. I'm not absolutely sure that the process isn't running; I just know that I can't access http://localhost immediately upon reboot. I have to restart the httpd daemon, which works fine. How would I be able to tell if it's just hung?
I checked everything.log, and I don't see anything that leaps off the page to me.

All I notice is that my system's time is having a few problems, since you'll notice that events occur at 22:00 and change, then 17:00 and change, then back to 22:00 and change afterwards. Could this be the problem? I've had the CMOS batteries peg out on me suddenly in the last few weeks. I would hope this sytem is not also suffering a similar fate. Nothing else was happening on my system except for the standard processes from /etc/rc.conf and other standard ones, since I've just been rebooting, checking the logs, then posting here.
