Gnome trouble

I can't log into gnome. I use GDM, followed the wiki.
1) I the get "your session has only lasted less than 10 seconds" error and when I look at more details it says:
error while loading shared libraries libgnutls.so:12 (or something very similar)
# ls -l /usr/lib/libgnutls.so
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 19 2006-06-27 03:38 /usr/lib/libgnutls.so -> libgnutls.so.13.0.5*
2) Sometimes I get "GDM could not open your authorization file. this is most probably due to no space on your hard drive bla bla"
(and i have gigabytes free on each partition)
This I also get for xfce, but only once and the second time it lets me log in.
Doesn't work for any user.
Ideas? More info?

oh, i was just saying why i havent done pacman -Syu in the first place
whenever I want a new kernel i have to use abs to recompile it without the SMP flag, because my realtek wireless card freezes the system with it compiled... it is a well known issue with these cards.
a badly stated comment on my part

  • Gnome: Trouble with system-config-printer

    Hello all
I have trouble setting up my printers using system-config-printer in Gnome... I added some screenshots to the bottom of this post. When I try to add the Generic CUPS-PDF printer, the "Next" button is disabled and I am not allowed to continue. When I try to add the HP printer that is on my home network (as recognised by the config) the application throws some sort of runtime error (in terminal) and doesn't update the screen or allow me to continue.
Before moving to Arch a few weeks ago, I used Ubuntu 8.04, and it had a very different application for configuring printers (although it was also called system-config-printer). Preferably, I'd just get that application back for configuring printers, it was much more intuitive and above all it actually worked.
I would like to know how to solve my problem of not being able to add the printers I want and how to get the Ubuntu printer config on Arch if that is possible at all.
    Thanks

Hmm.. It doesn't really make sense to me that I need a webbrowser to configure a printer, but I gave it a try. When I tried adding the CUPS-PDF printer, it asked me what brand it was in the second step. This can't be right. When I tried adding the HP printer that is on my network, it automatically selected the correct driver from a list, but when I chose to continue it asked me for a username and a password, and providing my own did not work. So this method failed for both printers. I would really love to get back the old configuration menu from Ubuntu at this point.

The GTK theme is a personal modification of Fresh Dark that removes the Aurora style scrollbar, uses bigger icons and has nicer progress bars.
The font I use is Myriad Pro with slight hinting enabled.
The icon theme is my own mash-up of many tango-styled themes and a few custom icons and improved icons from other themes. You'll find icons there from gnome-colors, gnome-icon-theme, ubuntu-studio, and stuff found randomly on the internet and more. I'm not done perfectioning the theme though, but it's come a long way.

  • [SOLVED] [GNOME 3.10] Trouble with Nautilus

    Hi there,
I am currently running arch on a 64bit machine with nvidia graphics drivers and so far did not have any trouble with the system. However, lately I do not get any kind of adressbar in Nautilus, although nautilus seems to respond the way it should.
E.g. I can't hit <CTRL+L> and enter a smb:// adress as I used to. This behavior just occurs on my desktop machine with Gnome 3.10; my notebook does not have these issues although I just updated to Gnome 3.10 there, too.
Anybody has any idea what might cause this weird behaviour?
    Last edited by alexpe87 (2013-10-16 17:16:12)

Actually I found out, that this dude here has exactly the same problem, except that he talks about the "bottom" part of nautilus missing, but complains about the top missing as can be seen on his screenshots.
    https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=710201
He also opened a bug report https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=710201
Editing the stuff in dconf-editor, everything works as expected now.

  • Solaris 10 x86 cdrw trouble.  Gnome and command line problems writing.

I'm experiencing general weirdness trying to write CD's and DVD's using a new internal DVD-RW device -- It's a Sony NEC AD 7220 A CD / DVD RW drive on a Solaris 10 x86 AMD system. I have searched far and wide for other threads of similar instances but no one has posted an issue like the one I'm having.
    I have a Sony Optiarc AD 7220 A CD-RW on a x86 AMD Athalon 1.6 ghz based server with 2 GB RAM.
The DVD-RW drive gets detected by BIOS (Phoenix TrustedCore 2.3) and reads disks fine. I installed Solaris 10.08 from DVD using this DVD-RW drive.
However, trying to write to new blank media does not work properly, (effectively at all).
I've tried different brands of brands of blank CD's and CD-R and CD+R (have not tried using CD-RW disks yet). Ditto with DVD's - tried DVD-R and DVD+R's.
    1. Inside the Solaris 10 GUI (Gnome, a.k.a. Java Desktop), when I put in a blank CD-R, a dialog box "Format Media...?" pops up. If I click "Ok" it formats the blank CD and closes the session, CD has been written to and is ruined.
    2. I open a terminal window, as root, and put in a blank CD. "mkisofs –r /home/foo 2>/dev/null | cdrw –i –p 1" will write a directory tree OK, but if I go back into gnome GUI and open and close the CD tray, again, up pops the "Format Media..." dialog box instead of the CD appearing on the desktop. If I restart vold (svcadm restart volfs) then open and close the CD tray, voila, the contents appear on desktop as CD icon.
    3. When I try to write to a DVD-R: "cdrw -i /local/iso_image" It always fails with: Write Track 1....Failed. after a few minutes. It did in fact write part of the .iso but bails out with a failure.
I've tried various other write commands (specifying the device ID, speed, so on and so forth) and command line switch options (following the rules of course) and it seems to me to be more than a syntax / media issue. However if it is I would like to know. I did see a similar CDRW device on the HCL for OpenSolaris with a 'reported to work' rating. That was for a Optiarc AD-5200A, which is going away thus my company has chosen to use the AD 7220A in speciality racks we build and deliver to the U.S. Navy.
I really need to get a handle on this CD-RW device issue and decide if a different brand / model is what it's going to take to solve this and move on to producing and delivering these systems in working conditions.

Sony systems are often very particular about what CD's and DVD's they'll take. I have several Sony systems that I use for video work and they'll read almost anything but they'll only write to DVD RW.  They also don't like cheap brand CD's and DVD's.  Be sure to try both CD RW and DVD RW before doing anything else.  Because of the requirement for DVD RW, they won't take fast speed (16x) DVD's, just 4x. If all of this turns out to be the case, you may want to go with a different manufacturer for the drive, DVD +RW 4x aren't always easy to find in the store.

  • File associations trouble in XFCE after removing Gnome

    Hi all,
I recently decided to switch to XFCE, totally replacing my previous Gnome DE, I removed gnome and all associated dependencies using "sudo pacman -Rscn gnome" then configured my new XFCE desktop to my liking, problem is that now some file associations are messed up, for example, If im on chromium and download a file, clicking "show in folder" opens up firefox instead of thunar, there were other problems, but I got them fixed by removing the contents on the folder ~/.local/share/applications/ that was filled with a lot of wine apps and some weird stuff.
Now the only thing missing is this firefox thing, no idea how to fix it, please help, also I tried removing firefox but "show in folder" doesnt do anything.
regards and thanks in advance for the help

I did read it but that didnt help, in the end what worked was regenerating the database and restarting comp. Also Xfce is a DE as the article states. Sí this behaviour wasn't normal.
Thanks a lot for the help provided

  • GNOME PAM keyring / GDM auto login / NetworkManager Trouble

    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=40553
I followed that post and was able to get gnome pam keyring automatically unlock my keyring password upon
    logging in manually from GDM.
However, it does not work when I set up GDM to automatically login. NetworkManager prompts me for keyring password. Is it possible to fix this?
    Thanks.

    See Edit ...
I had this problem for my parent's computer (they can't remember any password and that set them mad !) but I finally managed to do what I wanted :
I follow the post to enable pam_gnome_keyring.so here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=40553
Then, right at login, in gnome's administration panel, (or System>Administration) go to "Password Manager". There is a new set (or keyring, I don't know how it's named in english) named 'login'. You will see that the "default" keyring isn't unlocked. Click on it and it will ask for password. In this prompt, there is a new option : "Unlock this keyring when I log in". Check it !
Edit : OK, I rebooted and setting where all gone... It doesn't work. It's getting me mad... When will GNOME guys work to simplify our lives ? KEEP IT SIMPLE (, you) STUPID !

  • Trouble with norwegian keyboard layout in gnome 3

    Hello.
I have installed gnome 3 from extra, got gdm running. But i can not use the norwegian keyboard layout. In the logonscreen in gdm it is the norwegian layout, but when im loged in as root it si "us" keyboard layout.
I can use "setxkbmap no" to set the layout to norwegian. But a rebot or restart of X negates that, and I will have to do it again.
My computer is a Fujitsu Siemens amilo pro v3405.
    Below are my xorg.conf files:
    10-evdev.conf:

            MatchIsTouchscreen "on"
            MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
            Driver "evdev"
    EndSection
    My 10-keyboard.conf that doesnt work:
    #Section "InputClass"
    #    Identifier    "Keyboard Defaults"
    #    MatchIsKeyboard    "yes"
    #    Option        "XkbModel" "fscaa1667g"
    #    Option        "XkbLayout" "no"
    #EndSection
    And my 10-synaptics.conf for touchpad:
    Section "InputClass"
            Identifier "touchpad catchall"
            Driver "synaptics"
            MatchIsTouchpad "on"
            MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
            Option "TapButton1" "1"
            Option "TapButton2" "2"
            Option "TapButton3" "3"
    EndSection

Thx for quick respond and thx for the headsup on use of code tags.
I tried to comment out keybord section in 10-evdev.conf and use that 10-keyboard.conf, without the commenting, instead. My keyboard stoped responding at all by that.
I type setxkbmap no, have not put it in .xinitrc yet. I wanted to find a more "permanent" solution to the problem. I have also tryed to comment out
    Option "XkbModel" "fscaa1667g"
    but to no use.

  • GNOME 2.24 troubles

After upgradiing to GNOME 2.24 I have a couple problems...
    1. Accessibility features for Keyboad and Mouse don't work, both were fine before upgrade
    2. Menus, buttons, etc are not folllowing themes. The Appearance settings  window looks fine as I change themes, anything else looks bad.
    Any ideas welcome...

That was the first thing I checked. All is set correctly...simulate simultaneous keypresses is checked, as is pointer can be controlled by keyboard. Tried them check and un-checked, no go.

Thats because you keep exhibiting the same behaviours, despite being asked not to.
I'll link you (again) to the Forum Etiquette. Please read all of it.
Don't expect that help vampirism will be tolerated here, it won't.
I'll also remind you of the Arch Way
This user-centric design necessarily implies a certain "do-it-yourself" approach to using the Arch distribution. Rather than pursuing assistance or requesting a new feature to be implemented by developers, Arch Linux users have a tendency to solve problems themselves and generously share the results with the community and development team – a "do first, then ask" philosophy.

  • [SOLVED]Trouble installing xorg + gnome

I'm currently running a core installation of Arch on my virtual box. I have Internet connection and Pacman works. I've installed xorg but when I type startx it brings me to a weird DE thats just 3 terminals. I tried installing gnome but I got a bunch of errors. Then I tried again and I get errors like :: Retrieving packages from core...
error: failed retrieving file 'perl-.12.1-3-1686.pkg.tar.xz' from mirrorls.kernel.org  : Connection timed out
    etc...
    Then it says
warning:  failed to retrieve some files from core
error:  failed to commit transaction (Not Found)
Errors occured, no packages were upgraded.
It's really weird(and annoying). Can anybody offer some help?

Weird. When I type startx is starts some type of DE. Don't know why .xinitrc wouldn't be there.
Once Xorg is installed you can test it by running startx the funny three windows you see is twm
If you wish to install Gnome then use Arch wiki to guide you, add a login manager of your choice
From the looks of your first post you need to make sure mirrors network and pacman are all set up too

I'm pretty sure mirrors are set up correctly. I commented out the first two(The mirrors.kernel.org).  And pacman can get other packages like sudo correctly.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome + Compiz troubles

    Hi!
Since a couple of "yaourt -Syu" ago I've noticed that Compiz freezes Gnome. I mean, I can move the mouse and switch (Ctrl+Alt+F1) to a console (in order to kill gdm), but any other input to the desktop environment doesn't  work, e.g. can't move, resize, close windows, input any text, launch new apps, etc.
If I kill gdm and login to Gnome again it runs without a window manager and there I can launch metacity or openbox and run without problems. But the moment I run fusion-icon it freezes again. So, it's compiz related.
    Any clues???
    Thanx
Edit: PC is Athlon XP2 with Nvidia 7200 graphic card, proprietary drivers.
Last edited by pendor (2011-04-16 00:51:07)

While running gnome with metacity, you could try issuing '/usr/bin/compiz ccp --replace' from a terminal and watch for any errors printed.
If you are using gdm you should also have an ~/.xsession-errors file, maybe it contains useful messages.
If you started having this problem simply after a package upgrade then check /var/log/pacman.log and see what was upgraded recently. Pay attention to relevant packages ( xorg or compiz or nvidia drivers or gnome...) and maybe try to downgrade. Hopefully you can remember the date you started having the problem and can then identify which of these packages was upgraded that day by checking pacman.log.

  • Fstab,samba and ntfs trouble!!

    Hi!
I have setup samba, everything is working..but!
I use gnome-2.12 for the moment, with hal/dbus and I have been trying to figure out WHY the h*ll gnome can mount the smbfs harddrive, but not unmount it when finished...this ends up with I having like twenty different "mount /mnt/samba " pids if I do a ps -ef
then I have to umount every single one of them by hand and as root!
So , i figured, hey, I must make umount accessible by my user, and I did, it workes because I can umount my ordinary harddrive as a user, but not the sambashare...
SO I read some more with google, and found that this is a bug in umount, so my question is:
Can I use smbumount with the sambashares instead ?? (because that one work)...the trouble is that I can't seem to find any option in GNOME to set which command to use when mounting/unmounting smbfs
or, even better perhaps, is there other ways to get shared files from a Windows machine than using Samba?

If you install M$ SFU on the Windoze box, you can use NFS to connect to it.

  • Just few issues left for a full complete Gnome-Arch :D.

This is the first time with arch, actually i did try earlier, but could never get it to boot. Never figured out how to handle a seperate /boot. This time everything in single "/". I am using thinkpad T61, with nvidia quadro 140NVS, T9300, intel 4635 agn.
I have done a lot of reading, wikis and forums in last 2 weeks, that all this information is confusing me now. So i resort to forums for opinions and best practises. As of now, i have my sound, multimedia working, nvidia, xorg and compiz working.
    1. I am using alsa+gstreamer and also xine-libs. From what i learned from blogs/forums/wikis that OSSv4 is better than alsa, its quality and loudness is both higher, because it uses better mathematical calculations. Xine-lib is better than gstreamer. I installed OSSv4, cudnt get it to work, a loud continous beep on first reboot came, nothing came up, X hanged. After a hard reboot, it booted to gnome, without the beep. Removed OSS and installed ALSA.
I after lot of trying thought of following ubuntu on this, majorly as those guys put lot of effort and money in developing a superior user desktop, so i thought better to use what they do. Instatted alsa-gstreamer-good/bad. Banshee is working, all the media is working and skype is working.
Is OSSv4 that superior, will it be worth few more hours of effort.?
And shall i ditch xine altogether if multimedia is working good?
    Do i need pulse-audio?
    2. Synaptic installed, touchpad scroll works, but tapping is not working. The wiki guides to config /etc/xorg.conf. But there is not file called xorg.conf on my machine. I used find and locate to look for it, nothing. I do have  /etc/xorg.conf.d/ .. and then nvidia, synaptic ... in it. I have installed evdev, it say hotpluging support. Usb flash drive is working but card reader is not working. Althought in /etc/rc.conf MOD_AUTOLOAD is set to yes. How do i get the card reader working?
    3. How can i make the windows close buttons like minimize, maximize and close to come on left-side than right. I tired to install equinox (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=35808), no such package in pacman. Well pacman doesnot have any gtk2 package too, which is required by equinox and murrine(http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25649). Any hints how to install these or is their anyother way i can get the buttons on the left side of the top border?
    /*presently i am using Elegant Gnome Pack (http://arch-stuff.org/content/show.php/ … ent=127826)*/
    4. ntfs-3g is installed /etc/fstab has the following lines
    /dev/sda1 /mnt/C ntfs-3g rw,user,fmask=0111,dmask=0000 0 0
    /dev/sda5 /mnt/D vfat rw,user,fmask=0111,dmask=0000 0 0
/dev/sda5 automatically mounts to /mnt/D but /dev/sda1 doesnot automatically mounts. It does mounts on clicking the auto-detected drive icon in nautilus and giving root password, then it also shows up at /mnt/C. Yes C is ntfs windows-7, and D is fat32.
    5. Is there a way to record the messages that the terminal shows while booting UP. Before i installed OSS there were nevery any error/ failure messages. But after i installed (althought removed now) there are a few messages which says error, and before i can make anything out, it just goes to gnome. gnome is user-authenticated, where i dont see gdm, i straight get the desktop
    6. Even on logout, i dont see the GDM, like in ubuntu or others. Which means if i have to switch user i will have to install and use switch user applet. Is there a way on the first boot, i straight-away get a gnome desktop, but on the second or subsequent logouts, i get a GDM and then i have to give username and password for the session.
    7. How to get a splash screen in grub, the standard grub which comes with the iso downloaded.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Getting to know pacman as a new user is time well spent.  There is a great wiki, but also 'man pacman' will display all the options available.
To check if you have a package like GDM installed type pacman -Qs gdm or pacman-Ss gdm
while pacman -Qs gdm does show you whether gdm is installed or not, pacman -Ss gdm will simply search the repos for the package not your system.
yes, if you use pacman -Ss gdm it will search repos, but will also tell you if you have it installed locally with the brackets to the right of the program, like so:
    pacman -Ss gdm
    extra/gdm 2.30.4-2 (gnome-extra) [installed]
I should have been more clear.  It's usefull sometimes to use both, incase you manually(or accidentally) deleted dependencies for example, they won't show up in Qs but Ss they will

On another topic.... since I already got in trouble for making a second post...
ngoonee wrote:@cubeist, while your assistance is well-appreciated, perhaps the 'edit' button would be more useful next time .
    why?
20 mins after my first post I had a second train of thought that was slightly different from my first post?  My understanding of "edit" is to alter the context of what is already written.  But if I am violating forum rules of some sort, I apologize.

  • Can't start gnome 3 session

When I login either from gdm or lxdm the screen sits blue for 1~2min then a message pops up like "Oh no! Something has gone wrong... Please logout and try again" and I can only logout and nothing else.
A couple of days ago I installed arch and started to learn how to use pacman and I managed to install gnome 3 with no trouble, everything running smooth. Then I met the AUR, and the bleeding edge stuff, then I installed packer and this brilliant idea came up: why gnome 3, I want unity! And I started installing things mentioned in the Ayatana wiki page, I always rebooted after installing a few packages to check if everything was going well, but after I install compiz-core-unity-git something went wrong, the problem is that I'm not really sure if it was that package, but things collapsed when I ran a compiz command which I can't remember. I tried uninstalling all the packages I could think of being related to the problem, didn't work. I even uninstalled the whole gnome, gdm and xorg, and installing everything again, didn't work either. Here is what everything.log is saying about the error:

I have hope that somebody has had this issue and that it has a trivial solution which just happend to skip my thoughts.
Seriously I'm considering reinstalling arch from scratch.

Sounds very familiar... I got all excited about aur and all the bleeding edge software out there for arch when I first switched and ended up messing my system up in much the same way.
Anyways, for starters you can post the output of
    pacman -Qm
here to see if anyone spots something bogus that you've installed from aur.
I'm sure there are those that would disagree with me, but if I were you I would just save the output of
    pacman -Q
and reinstall your system from scratch... Also, I don't know if you're using yaourt, but I would advise against it in the beginning since it makes it so easy to install unsupported software... I think it's better to download the package and makepkg it by hand because it makes you think more about what you're doing (at most use something like cower). That's just my opinion though...
