Gnome volume control applet is off screen

Any idea on how to fix this? I have been gone from gnome for a while. Last time I was here the volume control applet slider was vertical. Now that it is horizontal, it exits screen right when it is on the right hand edge of the panel. (For those of you on links/lynx/elinks who cant see my pretty picture)

I only have one screen. But it is a laptop with the capability to run 2 screens.
Also I am using the nvidia drivers.

  • Gnome Volume Control

Im having problems with changing the volume of any of outputs PCM, master. When I wan't to scroll up on Volume control applet and Volume Control Aplication gnome-volume-control Left chanel always drops to 0 and than slowly rises with a lot of jumps up and down. This jumping exists if I grab slider to. So...
Its really anoying cause when using scroll whell on applet I have to scrool many times to get max volume if starting volume vas even 70%.
So question ofcourse is how to fix this left chanell jumping.
BTW I now use GNOME 2.24 but this was present in 2.22 to.
BTW when I was using Ubuntu this problem didn't occur. So its gnome+arch problem.

    And to me too.
The sound chip sucks anyway: CM6501, module snd-usb-audio.
Seems like multi-channel controllers are the culprit:
    Simple mixer control 'Speaker',1
    Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right - Rear Left - Rear Right - Front Center - Woofer - Side Left - Side Right
    (from amixer)

  • TS3274 The volume control stays on the screen

The volume control stays on the screen.

If the volume is working properly meaning if you do have sound and you can adjust the volume up and down, try this now.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Whoa! Finally someone is having the same problem as I. Unfortunately I have no solution for it
I'm using OSS since I hade trouble getting the sound to work with ALSA, maybe that is a part of the problem.

  • HT1551 Apple TV 3 Settings Menu, Volume Control "on" or "off".

In Apple TV3, Settings Menu, Sound - there's an option to turn Volume Control "on" or "off".
What is the functionality of this option, as I can't seem to adjust output volume neither by the standard remote control nor by the "Remote" App.
So what can I do if I turn the Volume Control option "on"?

This just happened to me. I however had a diagram flash up indicating I neede to connect a micro USB cord to the apple tv to my main iTunes computer. The system has to to be restored to it's orginal settings via computer. Problem is how many people have this cable? The one I had failed. Apple did a poor job with this.
I called support and they told me that though wireless works, any interuption in the signal will interupt the update. I did find an Energizer micro USB and this appears to have solved the problem, I have reconnected to my TV yet.
This is one thing Apple totally messed up. We keep hearing that Apple thinks TV can be better not with this issue it won't. They needed to be ahead of this and weren't

  • Gnome Volume Control High CPU Usage

    I have an interesting problem.
When I boot into Arch, my CPU usage is farly low. Jumping around 0 - 10% or so.
But as soon as I open up Gnomes Volume Control window. Cpu usage jumps up to 50 - 60% and stays there, No matter if the windows open or not.
My front channel is also at 0% on boot, so I normally go into the Volume Control to bring that up.
I noticed using alsamixer in the terminal will prevent the cpu usage from going so high. But if I open Gnome's Volume Manager, I have to log out, and log back in to get cpu usage back to normal. Is there anyway to avoid this or fix this issue?

This seems to be a known bug. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=gn … h&aq=f&oq=

  • Gnome volume control 'jumping'

    Hello,
When I try to control the volume in either Volume Control 2.22.0 or in the Volume Control panel applet in Gnome the volume 'jumps'. What I mean by this is when I try to move the slider slightly it behaves abnormally and 'jumps' around from muted, unmuted, or anywhere inbetween (sorry, not sure how else to explain it). If instead I use alsamixer instead to control the sound, the volume moves up/down without a problem. I'm using Alsa version 1.0.16 from www.alsa-project.org.

same problem here. I noticed it the moment i restarted after upgradinig to 2.6.25 Kernel. What happens is (at least for me) the following [assume the volume is being 'increased' using Keyboard or GUI control.
    ->Vol at 40%
    ->Vol at 41%
    ->Vol at 42%... until
    ->Vol at 0%
    ->L at 1% R at 0%
->I go to Control app and notice for some reason L and R channels are now unlinked. So i link them back but i cant seem to get the volume up with it linked, the moment i do it goes back to about 0% for both and unlinks. So i moved them seperatley, it worked i have both at 50%, so i felt clever and linked it so i can use keyboard for control, and it went back to unlink+0%ish.
And so on and so forth. U get this is a repeated loop. Once i use alsamixer in console (if channels are unlinked i find they are different volumes so i jst put them back together by maxing both, and now they are linked again) from then on i can change volume using alsamixer OR mplayer for instance (since volume control for mplayer is tied into the PCM volume (NOT Master)) in my case. Of course if i set 3D to post rather than pre PCM volume control becomes useless as always, so mplayer volume control does nothing but mere show. I jst have alsa on Vc/2 so i switch to it when i want to. It is ANNOYING can someone please help.

  • LXDE - use Gnome volume control

I started using LXDE coming from Gnome.  I loved how I could control the volume on my speakers via the external buttons on my laptop like I did in Gnome.  After applying the LXDE panel applet, it won't adjust my volume with the buttons.  Only while dragging it's slider.
Anyone know how to use gnome's volume set?  I am already using the gnome-power-manager.

You could try installing xbindkeys http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xbindkeys  if it recognizes your external buttons then you can bind them to amixer's master volume

  • Gnome Volume Applet hates mouse wheel ..

Hi, I noticed that the Gnome Volume Applets when is controlled with the mouse wheel sometimes acts very weird...
to explain me a little better if i rotate the mouse wheel above its icon to increase volume there are certain values wherein it gets excluded/disabled (dunno the official translation).
does it only happens to me?
    thx for your replies
[edit] uhm I forgot to mention a thing, I've tried with gnome-applets from the extra repo (gnome 2.22) and with the latest (this evening versions) of gnome-applets (+ libweather + gnome-panel )( because there is a boring crash of clock_applet with latest version of gnome-applets... but this is another story ) from AUR.

It's some bug in alsa that freaks out on volume control with the gnome volume applet. This happened since the upgrade to kernel 2.6.25. There's an upstream bug running at kernel.org's bugzilla for this, but I guess it's something in alsa-lib.
    Edit:
It's something that changed in event handling that causes the gnome volume control thing to go in a loop:

  • New USB keyboard installed, now volume control buttons function as clock screen popup?

Keyboard volume controll function as Clock screen pop-up. Just install new keyboard as old one had several dead keys

I was able to fix this bug by upgrading to OS X 10.6.8.
Very strange that a) it was a problem in the first place and b) that the upgrade did not happen automatically
Thanks very much to Haggibbor, who alerted me to that possibility. Since I read this in a thread I did not open myself, I unfortunately do not know how to let him have the 10 points I would like him to receive. (Hints for this newbie are very welcome.)
Problem of volume control keys is now solved.

  • Nokia X6 volume controls don't work for music play...

    Hi all
Just brought a new Nokia X6 for my wife and I have an odd problem.
I can start the music player from the home screen and skip forward and backwards a track with no problems. But I can't adjust the volume.
If I start playing music from the home screen and it's too loud or quiet, I have to open the music player itself before I can change the volume.
This seems very odd to me, and I have googled it and looked all the way through the forums here for the X6 and no one else has mentioned it. Does that mean it's only me having this trouble? Or does everyone else not use the music player from the home screen?
Also, I noticed that I cant  fast forward and rewind a track from the home screen. If I hold my finger on the Foward button for an extended period of time, the track continues playing as normal and then ether skips to the next one when I take my finger off, or all the player buttons disapear from the home screen when I take my finger off.
Again, if I do this in the music player itself, the track will fast forward or rewind after a second or two holding the 'button' down. Anyone else tried this?
    Thanks everyone in advance.

Yes, I realise that, but it only works when you are in the media player. If you are playing music from the home screen, then the volume button does nothing!! Is this how it's supposed to work?
I have looke right the way through the manual and it doesn't mention playing music from the home screen at all.
It seems odd to me that Nokia would build a phone expressly for playing music, have music controls on the front screen so that the user would not have to go to the music player to play music, then disable the volume controls on the home screen so the user is forced to go to the music player anyway.

  • Volume control (slider) in CP 5

Hi, I've just started testing Captivate 5. I would like to check if it will be suitable for my needs (making software demonstrations at a wiki (Mediawiki software).
I've been searching for a volume control (not on/off button, but a slider). I've found that it can be downloaded from a third-party supplier for CP 2 and CP 3, but I'm still searching for a solution for CP 5. Any clues out there?
(I'm also looking for a way to control the size of the swf video in the wiki, I'm posting that as a separate thread)
    In advance, thanks a lot!

    Hello,
In Captivate 5 there is a volume control widget. Did you try that? Open the Widget panel (or the Widget Workspace), click on the button Browse, you'll find it in the Gallery, Widgets folder.

  • Mapping Alsa Volume Control for USB SoundCard (C-Media 650)

Hello everyone who is interested in helping me solve my volume control problem!
Lets see, I have sound playback working, currently I am listening to some Foo Fighters mp3s in XMMS using the Alsa plugin, so I can't complain too much.
However, volume control doesn't work. If I set the alsa plugin to use software volume control, then I have volume control but its not ideal and it doesn't help me when I'm not using xmms. When I run alsamixer or open the gnome volume control, I have multiple volume controls for the "Speaker" device. The 1st pair of volume controls do nothing, I can mute them and my music keeps playing... no idea what they're controlling. The 2nd pair ("Speaker 1") DOES control the sound volume. I just need to find a way to remap it or something so I can configure my applications/tray icon/etc to use it. (And preferabbly not the other 6 channels)
In the Gnome sound control, the devices are:
"Speaker" - stereo control that doesn't do anything
and "Speaker 1" - a 7.1 channel (8 sliders) with the first two controlling front left and right sound for my stereo speakers.
I've tried setting xmms to use "speaker 1", but the option is not in the drop-box, tried typing it manually but that didnt work.
I set my tray icon to control "speaker 1" but the sliders don't seem to lock properly and the volume just jumps around, unlocking the channels and not staying balanced or scaling with the slider.
The only way to get the volume to change as expected is to open the gnome volume manager, make sure the channels of "Speaker 1" are UNLOCKED and slide the first 2 sliders to the desired volume.
So I was thinking if I could just remap the first two channels of "speaker 1" to something else using an alias or link or editing asound.state (which just confused me) for example, then I could use my alias to control the sound in my applications. Thanks for any help with this!

    Thanks again!

Some other observations that may be helpful (and, hopefully, get closer to the heart of the problem)...
    (1) Whenever VLC is playing audio (as mentioned in previous post, it is only application that works in desired manner), it will show up in Kmix's "Playback Streams" tab. Whenever Wine and Firefox are playing, they do NOT show up in the "Playback Streams" tab.
    (2) Kmix will not allow more than one open application to grab the UA-5 sound (e.g. If I open Firefox and play audio, stop playing audio (while leaving Firefox open), then open VLC and try to play audio, VLC will not play audio (unless Firefox is closed)). This is likely a related problem to the problem outlined in the previous post, but it might not be. If it isn't, I'll take advice on how to let KMIX grab multiple audio sources simultaneously on the same sound card.
    Thanks for reading!
