Gnome Volume Control High CPU Usage
I have an interesting problem.
When I boot into Arch, my CPU usage is farly low. Jumping around 0 - 10% or so.
But as soon as I open up Gnomes Volume Control window. Cpu usage jumps up to 50 - 60% and stays there, No matter if the windows open or not.
My front channel is also at 0% on boot, so I normally go into the Volume Control to bring that up.
I noticed using alsamixer in the terminal will prevent the cpu usage from going so high. But if I open Gnome's Volume Manager, I have to log out, and log back in to get cpu usage back to normal. Is there anyway to avoid this or fix this issue?
This seems to be a known bug. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=gn … h&aq=f&oq=

Gnome 3 gnome-setting-daemon high cpu usage
Slowly I'm getting used to G3 but the thing that concern is the high, nearly and over 100% usage of cpu by gnome-settings-daemon, runned by gdm user in htop. Anybody got the same experience?
Yup, same here, dont actually know why, but im gonna try de-activate gdm and use a pure .xinitrc to see if it solves anything.
edit, yup commenting out gdm from /etc/inittab and just putting exec ck-launch-session gnome-session in .xintitrc solved it for me, now i can use my laptop with ease

Gnome 3 - evolution - high CPU usage
I have a problem with evolution 3. As soon as I have it opened, X takes 100% cpu and evolution 49%, is anyone having the same problem or anyone knows how to solve this?
Thanks.niqingliang2003 wrote:my evolution always crash
Go search around, there's a crashing bug for evo currently with calendar/tasks. Don't post here, this thread is unrelated to that. -
/sbin/init high CPU usage (80%)
My PC run slowly, I viewed the processes by htop utility and it revealed that /sbin/init has a constantly high CPU usage, around 70-80%. I scanned it with clamscan virus scanner, but not infected. What can I do to fix this problem?
Did you mean "ps -ef" ? Then:

SBS 2011 - High CPU usage - Help me Microsoft forums! You're my only hope!
My company supports a client that has a SBS 2011 server. For about the past year, we've been fighting a recurring issue with performance on this server. There are about ten local users and four remote users. The server's CPU idles at
about 60%-80% but is usally running when under *any* load from 80%-100%. If you do anything on the console, it will stay pretty much at 100%. These are not power users by any means. The server is utilized for file/printer sharing, Exchange
2010, and one flat file database application (non-SQL). SharePoint is not utilized.
Needless to say, our client is frustrated. When opening files, using their database application, or doing anything Exchange-related, there is a large amount of lag on the client side. First, here are the server's specs:
Make:Dell PowerEdge T420
OS: SBS 2011 Standard SP1
CPU: 2 - Intel Xeon E5-2407
Memory: 32GB
RAID: RAID 1 - Operating System (C:)/Data Volume (E:) | RAID 5 - Data Volume (D:)
Here is what we have tried to resolve this to finality:
* Doubled resources - Initially the server had a single physical processor and 16GB of memory. While these specs alone should have been fine, and were fine when the server was installed, we had periods of time where the server would just sit all day at
100% usage. We doubled the resources and while this seemed like it would fix the issue, we are still seeing abnormally high processor usage.
* Removed all monitoring tools, antivirus, and backup software - As part of our testing, we removed our monitoring agent (LabTech) and antivirus (GFI Vipre). Mozy is utilized for an off-site backup so that was disabled. No dice.
* Verified updates - We made absolutely sure the server was 100% patched.
* Malware/Virus/Rootkit checks - We have ran scans checking for any potential issues with security.
* Ran MBSA and MBCA to fix any issues with the server's configuration.
There is no single process which is using all of the CPU, or we would simply be able to narrow it down. Our calls to Microsoft support have yielded no answers. The last call ended with Microsoft stating that a SBS server should always be running
at high CPU usage. Meanwhile, we have many other clients with less-beefy servers, with more users, who have no issues like these.
So, I'm turning to you all. I will gladly provide logs, configuration settings, even remote assistance sessions if you all can help shed some light on what might be causing my issues.
Thank you!Some comments/ideas:
How long was the server running after this screenshot? I ask because store.exe is only got a 1GB of RAM which is really low - it should grab most of the RAM within a few hours.
The server was up for about 12 hours. I believe an adjustment was made before to limit the Exchange memory usage.
Strange that SearchIndexer (wsearch service) is so high although that may be a startup condition.
The LT* processes seem to be a 3rd party monitoring tool - no idea why it would ever need that much CPU though (I thought you disabled this?).
We had, but we cannot go forever without monitoring our client's server. It has been pulled off in the past and results on performance are pretty much the same.
The taskmgr process run by amnet_admin has used a lot of total CPU Time. What is it? (can't see the command line).
That's the user I was logged in as when I took the screenshot. Even the task manager seems to eat up the CPU.
The sqlserver process right above it is also busy - may want to look at the command line and figure out which SQL database that is (SBS has 3 - WSUS, Sharepoint, and SBS monitoring)
I believe that's the SharePoint database. They don't currently use their site. Would you recommend a removal and reinstallation? I would not completely remove as I know SBS doesn't like you removing parts of the complete package.
Strange that vds.exe is 10% - that is the interface to the disk management interface IIRC. Perhaps your monitoring service has gone awry here - definitely lose it.
I'll see about pulling it off and I'll see if there are any improvements.

Unusually high cpu usage with iMovie 6.0.3
I'm having trouble with very high cpu-usage. Just the open imovie app is taking up about 50%, during playback it sometimes peaks over 100%! The project file is pretty big (about 30 gig), but that is mainly because of the amount of footage imported into it. The movie itself is about 25 minutes in length. There is some audio editing going on: some soundeffects, musicfiles (no drm-protection), audio commentary that i recorded within imovie. I know that imovie has trouble when there is a lot of audio/audio editing involved and this project is probably a little more complex than other stuff i did in imovie, but i never had such problems. i can hardly use playback anymore. I recently updated Quicktime to 7.6.4 and Perian to version 1.2.1. Any ideas what's going on or how to work around the problems? Since the movie is about 80% finished i don't really want to start all over again. Thanks in advance for your input!
Hi Klaus1
I have several plug-ins by cfx and the slick volumes 4, 6 8 and 10. I can post a list of all of them if you like. Up to now they never made any trouble, but you'll never know...
The edit in the timeline is about 25 minutes long. But the project file contains captured dv-footage of about 2 hours, so that alone adds up to something like 26 GB. Then there are a few rendered effect-clips done with some of the plug-ins like stabilizing or color correction which also add to the 30 GB, as well as some audio-files (some music, my voice-over commentary). I emptied the trash several times while working on the movie. At this moment there are only a few MB of erased audio in it.
It all sounds a bit like this is an insanely huge and complex project, but as i said, i have done projects like this in imovie without the massive cpu-usage. I'd like to continue to use imovie, but if this problem keeps coming up with future projects, i might as well take the step and switch to Final Cut Express.
For now I will try your idea of exporting the movie as it is now and open it in a new project file.
Thanks for your help and input so far! -
High CPU Usage / Dropped Packets - Switch Blade WS-CBS3120X-S
Hi all,
I have a couple of Switches Blade 3120, working as active-standby model (HSRP) on a new site deployment. There are other 20 sites more or less, working on the same model, without issues. But in this one, we are seeing a high cpu usage. The traffic going through the platform is 600Mbps (on peaks), and in this case we have 40% of CPU usage. Traffic should be close to 3 Gbps. When we tried to send the whole traffic through the platform, active switch began to drop packets on the majority of interfaces.
When we analyze the CPU usage, there is a special process called "HL3U bkgrd proce" always have the most CPU use, but we do not know what concerns. We do not know if it is caused because there are PBRs configured. It should not matter. How I mentioned, there are other sites working fine and have had always the same PBR number.
Could you guys help us?. Any idea what is causing the high usage?. Is there a special debug we could to perform to diagnose the issue?. Also, we have seen a high interrupt CPU usage (9% in this case).
Find attached the whole diagnosis outputs.
Thanks for your assistance guys.
Cheers,
Juan Pablo

Hi all,
I'm having high CPU usage with one of my Cisco 3845.
It works as an IP-IP Gateway and the CPU is quite high when the total number of calls only around 100-200 calls.
I check the CPU usage with "show process cpu sort" and it looks like there are some "hidden" processes that consuming CPU.
For example, 41% is total CPU, 25% is due to interrups, so CPU utilization on process level = 41 - 25 = 16%.
But as showed below, processes don't consume that much CPU, only around 7% ???
Please help to advise on this case. Any help is highly appreciated..
Thank you.

You may want to download Glary Utilities, which is a free software(they will ask you if you want to go Pro, just say no, the free version works very well). There is a module for startup manager. You can go in and disable stuff that starts with the computer. I would advise unchecking adobe, java, quicktime, printers, etc. Anything that doesn't REALLY need to start with the computer. The nice thing with Glary is that you can restart the computer, and if you find that you need one of the programs to start with windows, you can go back in and enable it again.
The Celeron 925 processor in your computer is a decent entry level processor, but if there are too many programs running in the background, it can bog down quick. I would also recommend downloading and running Malwarebytes Anti-malware, to be sure that there is nothing malicous running in the background.

Continual HD activity, high CPU usage when idle
I got my first notebook, a Compaq V2000, a few weeks ago and have Arch set up pretty well on it but I have a few issues. Even when the machine is sitting idle it sounds like the HD is doing a read (or whatever) about every 5 seconds. This only starts after I log into Gnome and stops if I log out.
I tried a couple of things with hdparm:
If I try 'hdparm -y /dev/hda' the drive goes to standby but immediately spins up again.
'hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda' disables APM and stops the cyclic behavior. This would seem to be good but during the 5 second cycle the drive alternates between quiet and noisy and this leaves it in the noisy state.
I tried to determine what might be causing all this disk activity so I edited lilo.conf to remove "acpi=on apm=off" from the "append=" line and in rc.conf I put a ! in front of all modules and daemons and rebooted. I removed the applets from task bar. No change.
I ran top to see if I could tell what was accessing the HD but I'm not knowledgable enough to make much sense of it. I did notice that on my notebook the top summary shows:
CPU: ~30% user, ~10% system, ~60% idle with 'wait' bouncing between 0 and 5%
On my main computer, also running Arch/Gnome, I get
CPU: ~2% user, ~1% system, ~97% idle with 'wait' solid at 0%
On the notebook, if I run hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda the CPU #'s for user and system remain high but the wait # drops to zero and stays there.
I don't think all this HD activity could be good for my machine, and I know I find it very annoying. If anyone could help me stop all the HD accesses and understand the high CPU usage I would appreciate it.I loaded lsof and frankly it scared me. It listed what looked like a couple hundred files and I didn't know exactly how to use that information.
Then I tried laptop-mode-tools. The man pages didn't sound too promising since it uses, among other things, hdparm, which I already tried with mixed results. I gave it a try anyway and right out of the box, with no configuration, it worked. HD access when idle dropped to essentially none, the drive spins down and the cooling fan runs much less frequently.
So far all I have changed in the config file are the HD idle timeouts. The default of 5 seconds was starting and stopping the HD too often so I changed that to 20 seconds for now.
Whatever laptop-mode did to stop the 5-second HD accesses the effect persists even if I run 'laptop_mode stop' and '/etc/rc.d/laptop-mode stop'. When I get the time I should be able to use 'laptop_mode status' and laptop-mode.conf settings to determine exactly what the magic bullet was.
Thanks, lucke. I never would have tried laptop-mode on my own because I thought it only duplicated functionality that I already had with hdparm and powernowd. -
Skype on older PC, high cpu usage
Hi all!
Tried recently to use my old PC (Pentium4, 2.0GHz, 1G memory) as skype machine. All went well except when using video+audio, it wasn't enough cpu to handle that. Cpu usage was 100% and there was latency in video and audio. Tested that in local area network. Then what I found, much of the load went from pulseaudio (skype about 60%, pulseaudio about 40%). I installed the thing since GNOME without pulseaudio is somewhat broken. Then I googled and tried to tune pulseaudio:
From https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio, I implemented what said in "Glitches and high CPU usage since 0.9.14", it helped with sound quality.
From http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup, in file /etc/pulse/daemon.conf
default-fragments = 8
default-fragment-size-msec = 5
And, finally, from http://linux.die.net/man/5/pulse-daemon.conf
resample-method=trivial
Something helped, after that PA cpu share dropped to about 15%, and I was able to skype with audio and video, even having couple % of cpu idle
Now comes interesting part: I went to gstreamer-properties and selected audio output to pulse. PA cpu load went back to 35%. Then a reverted it back to "auto detect", cpu load subsided to 15%. Then I remembered seeing somewhere that skype through PA emulation of ALSA takes less CPU than throug PA directly
Then I went to sleep
Any more ideas how to further optimize PA/skype to be able running skype on slow PC? I even consider removing PA altogether but I'm worried about setting sound in GNOME.
AntonDid the sharing and unsharing of screen stabilise your CPU usage? I also tried deleting the Library/Caches/com.skype* directory and whilst it helped initially, in the long run it did not work. The only thing that worked for me was sreen share and unshare.
Personally I am just getting more and more disappointed with OS X. The way they have implemented HiDPI support with scaling (downscaling and then upscaling) is just insane and a lot of applications struggle. I am sure this is not the root cause of the high CPU usage issue for Skype. It's not long before I come off the Apple ecosystem altogether. -
High CPU usage since last 48 hours
hi,
i'm experiencing a high cpu usage relating to "System" since last 48 hours. i'm also unable to open the Pictures or Music. It says "Scanning Device Storage" but seems never will end.
i've my phone restarted many times but changed nothing. i'm currently recharging my phone 2 times a day and i'm worried about the heat it's getting.
i'm also worried about the large size of data being out of my phone! is it a security issue?
(down bounds of the battery usage showing the phone on charge!)Remove your media card and do a powered on, battery pull reboot. Reinsert your media card and see if the issue persists.
For the #Z30 model,
On your BlackBerry10 device with a non-removable battery:
Restart: With your BlackBerry powered ON, press and hold the upper edge power button a couple seconds and the tap the lower right RESTART.
or,
Reboot: With your BlackBerry powered ON, using the side edge volume keys, press and hold down both of the Up and Down volume keys for about 20 seconds, ignoring the initial screenshot message... the screen will go black and reboot.

Securityd - high cpu usage. Yosemite 10.10.3
Hi,
I have upgraded to 10.10.3 and I am having issues with the process securityd. It constantly has high cpu usage and its causing the cpu temp to heat up. I did a clean install of yosemite at 10.10.2. Also other weird stuff is happening, such as when i click the button to open the notification/today sidebar, it gets highlighted so i know it has registered the click but the sidebar doesn't open. When i click it again, it opens.
Any Ideas to fix this that ideally don't require a full reinstall (Doing exams at the moment, takes time to reinstall stuff).
I have the latest 15 inch retina macbook pro. 2.2 i7 and 16gb ram.
Thanks,

Windows 8; high cpu usage on explorer (~50%)
I just restore my laptop, and now i noticed that my usage is above 50% and the major usage is because of explorer.exe which showed 49-53% in Task Manager.
Is that normal? Is there any solution to lower down the usage for explorer?Hi,
For high cpu usage issue, I usually use Process Explorer to troubleshoot, here is a link for you to download:
Process Explorer v15.40
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
It's a simple and small tool, once you installed and open it, locate to explorer.exe, you will find all processes related with explorer running in your system, find the culprit of the high cpu usage.

High CPU usage while running a java program
Hi All,
Need some input regarding one issue I am facing.
I have written a simple JAVA program that lists down all the files and directories under one root directory and then copies/replicates them to another location. I am using java.nio package for copying the files. When I am running the program, everything is working fine. But the process is eating up all the memories and the CPU usage is reaching upto 95-100%. So the whole system is getting slowed down.
Is there any way I can control the CPU usage? I want this program to run silently without affecting the system or its performance.Hi,
Below is the code snippets I am using,
For listing down files/directories:
static void Process(File aFile, File aFile2) {
spc_count++;
String spcs = "";
for (int i = 0; i < spc_count; i++)
spcs += "-";
if(aFile.isFile()) {
System.out.println(spcs + "[FILE] " + aFile2.toURI().relativize(aFile.toURI()).getPath());
String newFile = dest + aFile2.toURI().relativize(aFile.toURI()).getPath();
File nf = new File(newFile);
try {
FileCopy.copyFile(aFile ,nf);
} catch (IOException ex) {
Logger.getLogger(ContentList.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
} else if (aFile.isDirectory()) {
//System.out.println(spcs + "[DIR] " + aFile2.toURI().relativize(aFile.toURI()).getPath());
String newDir = dest + aFile2.toURI().relativize(aFile.toURI()).getPath();
File nd = new File(newDir);
nd.mkdir();
File[] listOfFiles = aFile.listFiles();
if(listOfFiles!=null) {
for (int i = 0; i < listOfFiles.length; i++)
Process(listOfFiles, aFile2);
} else {
System.out.println(spcs + " [ACCESS DENIED]");
spc_count--;
for copying files/directories:public static void copyFile(File in, File out)
throws IOException {
FileChannel inChannel = new
FileInputStream(in).getChannel();
FileChannel outChannel = new
FileOutputStream(out).getChannel();
try {
inChannel.transferTo(0, inChannel.size(),
outChannel);
catch (IOException e) {
throw e;
finally {
if (inChannel != null) inChannel.close();
if (outChannel != null) outChannel.close();
Please let me know if any better approach is there. But as I already said, currently it's eating up the whole memory.
Thanks in advance.
