Gnome vs openbox+gnome-panel

I try to make my computer quicker several weeks. I installed LXDE but I feel uncomfortable without Gnome panels with its menu, traffic report, weather report and etc. If I install Openbox and gnome-panel is this combination equal to Gnome by quickness or will my computer work qucker? Because of what Gnome works slower than WMs?

iphitus wrote:
On any remotely modern computer you'll see no visible change in "quickness". It merely uses less ram, and relatively less CPU time.
Theoretically the lower ram usage would increase the ram available for caching. The reduced processes would reduce CPU usage and result in more CPU time available for other processes. However in practice the ram saved is going to be relatively insignificant on any remotely recent computer, resulting in negligable improvements from extra cache.  GNOME itself uses very little CPU time when in use. The average desktop user can spare the extra CPU time without any noticable effect.
So unless you've got an older machine (older than <512MB ram, <1.4GHz) you'll not really notice any performance difference.
Keep the features you want to use, your computer usage will be "quicker" from using what's comfortable, familiar and does what you need.
I can notice a speed difference between Openbox and Xmonad on my remotely recent dual core laptop.
I can especially see the difference between GNOME and any lightweight WM..

  • Openbox + Gnome-Panel

    I've been tinkering around with openbox, fluxbox, pypanel, etc, trying to find the perfect WM setup. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I'm slow in making decisions as I have to play with everything to my satisfaction before making a choice. I've been a Gnome user for the past year and a half, since that's what I started with in Ubuntu.
    One of the possibilities I threw around for a while was using Openbox with Gnome Panel. I eventually decided against it, but it occurred to me that I've never seen nor heard of anyone using OB with gnome-panel, although it is obviously feasible.
    So, just curious, anyone out there use that combination?

    The reason you don't see many screenshots of Openbox with gnome-panel is because gnome-panel is a resource hog that consumes upwards of 30MB of RAM--and that's without applets.  Add a bunch of applets to it and you'll see it increase further.
    As has been commented here, many users run Openbox/GNOME. This is basically a full GNOME session, except that the Metacity window manager is replaced by Openbox.
    At any rate, try it for yourself...you might like it.  Then again, if you're a speed/minimalist perfectionist, I can guarantee there are faster & lighter solutions, such as:
    * Pypanel
    * Tint
    * Visibility
    Then there's the seemingly less obvious choice of running no panel at all, which is what I do when I run Openbox.  After all, it includes a desktop managing menu by default--all that's missing is a clock and a system try (ala conky/trayer).

  • Openbox & GNOME?

    Hi there, I just finished installing my base system and want to get GNOME with Openbox configured. I've downloaded both gnome and openbox and in my .xinitrc I have:
    exec openbox
    exec pypanel
    exec gnome-session
    Problem is pypanel isn't loading, and it's loading as a gnome desktop rather than openbox.
    What I want is an openbox style desktop, with no gnome panels, but with gtk for the interface graphics.
    Sorry if I'm explaining this wrong...

    @Phixion
    the example .xinitrc I gave you will launch openbox with pypanel (which you'll need to configure - .pypanelrc in ~/) and gnome-settings-daemon (if you have gnome installed) as a simple way to switch gtk themes; otherwise andre.ramaciotti's suggestion of using gtk-chtheme avoids the need to install gnome if you don't need/want it

  • Gnome-settings-daemon + gnome 3.2 + openbox

    After gnome 3.2 upgrade, I can't run gnome-settings-daemon by itself anymore.
    I used to use it with openbox, mainly for getting themes loaded (which I am achieving with
    settings.ini now), but more important, to get my fn shortcuts working in my laptop.
    Any ideas are welcome.

    Seems to work for me (I'm using Openbox standalone). Started with:

    Works now.
    Mad Fish wrote:Also, you can live without it. You can use xsettingsd for themes/icons/fonts configuration, feh for desktop background, and assign hotkeys in obconf for media keys. That's what works for me.
    I already used feh. It does the job just fine.
    I found xsettingsd in AUR. I'm going to give it a try.
    About hotkeys in obconf, I didn't find such option.
    Thanks.

  • Running gnome services without gnome

    Does anyone here use some of the gnome services without running Gnome?
    I would like to get the gnome screensaver and USB autodetection (when I plugin a thumb drive, it should mount and open up rox) to work but I haven't had much luck so far.

    When I was running openbox only, I was starting it throu startx, and I had in my ~/.xinitrc something like:
    gnome-volume-manager ;
    gnome-settings-daemon ;
    exec openbox ;
    gnome-volume-manager is autodetecitng usb and cd's, but you need to have d-bus and hal started.
    You could easily just have all that in your executable ~/.xsession as well. Either work equally well.

  • [SOLVED] Gray Boxes in GTK3/Gnome 3.4/Gnome Shell

    Greetings,
    I have googled for this, but maybe my lack of ablility to exactly describe the issue as a search term is why I can't find anything. But I hve a problem that is just driving me crazy....
    I have gray boxes that are round menu items, tab names, the clock and user name when screen is locked, etc... that is really throwing off the look of my desktop and driving me crazy.
    Here are some screenshots to hopefully show what I mean.
    The first two are with the adawita theme. The least one is with the evolve theme to show it doesn't seem to matter what the gtk theme is.
    Here is what I've done:
    1.) This might be why it had happened: I tried out gnome-unstable for a few hours, to get a look at gnome shell 3.6. After deciding that I wasn't ready to move to it yet (some of the extensions that I'd still want for it aren't there yet), I removed the repository, did a pacman -Syy, did a pacman -Rcsn of gnome, then reinstalled gnome as per the wiki.
    2.) I have removed all of the stuff on /home to get a fresh start after seeing the boxes.
    3.) I have removed with Rcsn and reinstalled gnome.
    4.) I have made sure to install the gtk2 theme engines, just in case.
    5.) I read through the gtk+, gnome pages on our wiki.
    6.) I googled.
    And yet, I still have those damnable graphic glitches....
    So I am banging my head against a wall here, I do hope someone here can help, at least point me in the right direction. Thanks!
    UPDATE
    Ok, so I have fixed my issue. I ended up pretty much removing everything except the base system, xorg, video drivers, and such. Somehow or another, there were left behind traces of my brief experiment with 3.6 that was causing the issue.
    Once I got down to almost a fresh new start I was able to re-install gnome and the graphic mess-ups were gone.

  • Gnome-games without gnome

    Hi,
    I would like to be able to play the gnome games but I don't want to install gnome completely. So I had pacman install the gnome-games and gnome-games-extra-data packages. Works fine for some games but others only give me the following error message:
    "The default configuration values could not be retrieved correctly.
    Please check your GConf configuration, specifically that the schemas have been installed correctly."
    Now since I never used gnome I am not sure what "schemas" this error is telling me about. After reading gconftool-2 --help-schema I guess I know how to set a schema but how do I know which ones I have, do I have to install them, if so how? I can find gtk-engines but no gnome schemes..
    Can someone help me on that one? I would like to be able to play Reversi and Mahjongg and so on again.
    thx

    Thanks for the replies. Gconf is installed (pkg-name gconf, version 2.18.0.1-2), also I thought that 'pacman -S gnome-games-extra-data' would install everything necessary to run the games.
    So I dunno if it is a configuration issue (again, I never used gnome as my DE and I don't know about those 'schemas') or missing dependencies. If it is missing dependencies, does anyone know what other packages I need? Cuz pacman says that all deps are installed.

  • GNOME desktop + Openbox

    Hi!
    I have just reinstalled arch and choosed Gnome as my DM, I used xfce till now.
    And I miss few things, like right click menu on Desktop. So I installed openbox, but I found out that Nautilus and OB dont like each other.
    I would like to have OB menu and desktop icons... If it is possible...
    If not, what are my alternatives?

    Ok, dont with that.
    I've tried openbox menu, and I dont like it. So I left desktop to nautilus capable hands...
    I'll use gnome-panel menu plugin. Thanks guys.
    Now I have another problem.
    Is this bug or what?
    This is my desktop section in openbox rc.xml
    <desktops>
    <number>4</number>
    <firstdesk>1</firstdesk>
    <names>
    <!-- set names up here if you want to, like this:
    <name>1</name>
    <name>2</name>
    <name>3</name>
    <name>4</name>
    -->
    </names>
    <popupTime>875</popupTime>
    <!-- The number of milliseconds to show the popup for when switching
    desktops. Set this to 0 to disable the popup. -->
    </desktops>
    And still I have 2 (yes, two) virtual desktops. In pager only Workspace 1 and Workspace are listed. That'a strange too, they should be named "1" and "2".
    Tried with obconf also, set to 4... etc
    openbox --reconfigure
    Still the same, tried X restart, sys reboot. Still I have only 2 desktops.
    P.S.
    Figured out if I click "+" in Obconf's desktop setting to add more and more desktops. Up to some 15, and then "-" to delete them to 4. Then it works. Then I have 4 desktops.
    Any ideas?

  • GNOME-Shell with GNOME-Panel look

    For all the GNOME-Users out there.
    I think a lot of people would like that the GNOME-Shell have an options which enables to use it like the current GNOME-Panel (from the design).
    So there is a bottom panel which shows open windows and things like that.
    I made a bug-report for that and if you like the idea you can vote for it or leave a comment: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625587

    I can't say I'm very surprised.  Although it would be nice.
    Once I got a glimpse of gnome-shell I knew I wasn't ever going to like it, so I figured I would ditch GNOME before it came out (when I would leave GNOME anyway).  Xfce and I have been good buddies since then, though I may end up on Openbox.

  • Openbox - Gnome-icons wont change anymore... Reason: Gnome update?

    I recently upgraded all my packages and among them was a new Gnome-build. I decided to actually check how Gnome looks in the new version and installed 'gnome' and 'gnome-extra' from the repositories.
    Now after rebooting my computer the icon theme I have specified in ~/.gtkrc.mine does not work anymore (Crashbit, if you wanna know). This is pretty weird, as for instance the default 'Tango' theme doesn't work either - only the, say, functional Gnome icon theme is displayed.
    Anyone with similar issues?
    I have no clue about how to fix this...
    EDIT: So I just started a gnome-Session and edited the theme via the 'Appearance manager' (heck do I know how it's called....) and chose Crashbit- and see! For some reason the icon theme in my openbox-session changed too... Now this is rather odd, as ~/.gtkrc-2.0 says that ~/.gtkrc.mine is supposed to be imported, and that one states "Tango" as a theme.
    I suppose that the information about which icons to use is stored someplace else (damn I am smart!). Any ideas?

    Icu was upgraded from 0.50 to 0.51.1 , you probably have packages (could be from AUR) that are build against the old icu version and need to be rebuild.

  • GNOME Menu - Openbox Menu

    I'm trying to switch to Openbox from GNOME (yay) and used `mmaker -vf OpenBox3` to generate a menu. Except, it's a mess with tons of things I'd never use.
    So my question, is it possible to convert GNOME menu entries to Openbox menu entries?

    mmaker -vf OpenBox3
    has pretty much done just that.
    The easiest thing to do is open .config/openbox/menu.xml in an editor and remove all the entries that you don't want.
    The beauty of OB is you can make it do just about anything...

  • Pacman Not install gnome or openbox

    Check your pacman.conf and mirrorlist to make sure that you haev the mirrors listed correctly.
    Also post the exact error here, so we can have a look.

  • Gnome AppMenu without gnome-shell?

    Are there any other applications apart from gnome-shell that support gnome's appmenu (the per-application menu that appears in top bar in gnome shell)?
    I'm using custom openbox session with various gnome applications. Currently the appmenu shows as menubar with only one item, which looks really stupid in most cases.
    So, I'm looking for dock/panel/whatever that could display the appmenu outside gnome-shell. Any suggestions welcome..

    Yeah, I've noticed that it wasn't updated long time ago in GIT.
    I'm giving myself a break - GNOME panel is so buggy and unstable... whenever I add or remove an applet, it hangs or quit. Now I even cannot launch panel - terminal says nothing, but panel doesn't appear.
    It's not worth it.
    EDIT: Thanks for your help.

    What is broken and how do I fix it?

    So, I fixed the audio issue with removing all unrequired packages.
    But additional the workspace shifting is now unstable but sound works!
    Now only the gnome-controll-center needs a fix
    EDIT:
    Sound still not working:
    I can't adjust the volume.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.12 : gnome terminal does not run anymore

    I had the following message when trying to run gnome-terminal after updating to 3.12:
    Error creating terminal: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)
    I have found a fix, so I'll share it with the community. The problem was that I had vte3-mosh-fix installed from the aur, version 0.34.9 and that gnome-terminal now requires vte3 0.36.0.
    Switching to the official vte3 package fixes the issue.

    Thank you for posting the solution.  I would have never even remembered that I had installed that mosh fix, let alone thought to remove it.
