[Gnome] weird appearance of special characters

Hi,
Yesterday I installed a new arch on my PC. When I was looking for a file on my HDD I saw an weird appearance of special characters like "☆" or "♪", they've been replaced by a square...
I think this is a problem with my locales but I don't know where is my problem...
In my rc.conf I have :
LOCALE="fr_FR.UTF-8"
I also tried to set "utf8" in lower case but didn't worked.
In my locale.gen I have uncommented :
fr_FR.UTF-8 UTF-8
fr_FR ISO-8859-1
When I type on a Terminal "locale" I get that :
LANG=fr_FR
LC_CTYPE="fr_FR"
LC_NUMERIC="fr_FR"
LC_TIME="fr_FR"
LC_COLLATE="fr_FR"
LC_MONETARY="fr_FR"
LC_MESSAGES="fr_FR"
LC_PAPER="fr_FR"
LC_NAME="fr_FR"
LC_ADDRESS="fr_FR"
LC_TELEPHONE="fr_FR"
LC_MEASUREMENT="fr_FR"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="fr_FR"
LC_ALL=
But nothing with utf8...
I also try to type "locale-gen" between different steps but it didn't worked too...
Thanks for you help !

I went toe Edit → special characters which opened up the special characters window, which is the same as the Character view that I can access for my menu bar in the upper right of the screen (next to the battery icon), then I went to the "Greek" option on the side so the greek letters showed up and doubled clicked on my symbol of choice.
I will do below to see if it works here:
α β
Also thanks Peter I will check her version of word, I am pretty sure if it is running that then she probably doesn't know about it.

  • Weird dots, lines, special characters with triggering uevents.

    I'm trying to install arch on my uefi laptop and I'm going into UEFI Shell x86_64 v2, letting it load then exiting and starting up the Arch Linux archiso x86_64 UEFI CD and it's just displaying a ton of random dots, lines, underscores, etc.  I've tried selecting the boot option and hitting tab to see if I can't add a boot option, but that doesn't even let me append options to it.  Here's a picture of what's going on since I don't even know what this is called to begin searching for answers on it.

    Can you tell us whether your async line configuration includes the command no exec?
    I have seen situations where async lines used for reverse telnet/terminal server and configured with the default setting of exec will send extra/garbage characters to the console of the controlled device.

    I have created a book in ibooks author with a custom font when previewing on the ipad the special characters within the font do not appear?

    'custom' font sounds like you may be working with a font that is unsupported on iOS/iPad.
    Supported fonts are found in the pull-down font menu in the toolbar. Authors are obligated (mostly) to stick to that list.

  • Special characters & picture frames do not appear when site is loaded

    When I publish my "new" site to a folder and open it everything looks fine; however, when I upload the site to my server, all special characters (bullets, apostrophes, quotes, tabs, etc. along with picture frames show up as ??? or squares. Checked in Foxfire and Safari; no difference between browsers. Note: used iWeb SEO.
    Any ideas what's going wrong and how to fix it?

    What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand? I've no experience with either of those apps. I use Web Site Maestro for optimizing and uploading my sites. It works very well.

  • Pages '09 special characters showing up weird

    Hi, I am a new Mac user and i have found that in pages '09 some of the special characters are not displaying correctly, the main problems are with the mathematical x and y symbols, if I copy and paste the strange characters out of pages then they display correctly it is just in pages that I have the problem. come to think of it the error came along when i upgraded to the latest version of Mountain Lion, could this be a problem?
    This is an example of the characters x and y:

    Never mind, I found it via google.  Unicode 1D465 for the X.
    This is because the font in your document does not have that character or uses it for a differnt symbol. When you drag the symbol from the center pane of the character viewer, it pastes it in using whatever font you are using. If you look at the character viewer and look at the font variations, you will see Cambria Math as one of the variations. Drag the symbol from there and it will display correctly (because it will be pasted in as Cambria Math). Or you can use the Cambria font in your document and drag the X from the center pane.

  • Need help in using replace function with special characters

    I have a column in a table where the data can contain ascii code for special characters such as an apostrophe.
    The data looks like this:
    CREEK'S LANE
    ie for a street named CREEK'S LANE.
    I want to replace the ascii representation with the apostrophe and have the returned data show up as: CREEK's LANE
    When I try the query below I get prompted for substitution variable value.
    I don't seem to be able to find the right syntax to make this query work.
    SELECT REPLACE (street_name, ''', '''')
    FROM
    streets WHERE street_id = 1
    Does anybody know how to do this?
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    GeorgeHa! The codes you specified rendered in the HTML, but showed properly when I listed your original posting above. I didn't understand what you meant initially because the 5-character string represenation got rendered as the quote that you said you weren't able to get - a display problem.
    You're getting prompted for the substituon variable because of the ampersand; you appear to be doing this in SQL*PLUS. The first thing I would try is to SET DEFINE OFF when using the ampersands to see if that works. If That doesn't work check the docs to delmit the ampersand (I think its a backslash before it but can't remember offhand). Another, harder option might be to use the TRANSLATE function replacing the literal character instead of using REPLACE (though replacing a quote will be a little tricky). If you're on 10g also consider using the advanced quoting
    Good luck!

  • Why does text on certain portions of websites, usually when adjacent text contains special characters, become jumbled into seemingly random sets of characters that are not in any way jumbled when viewing the source of the webpage? How can I fix this?

    When viewing most text on most websites, it displays properly. However, there are two instances where text will either tend to, or consistently, become jumbled into a mess of seemingly random characters. Oddly enough, these seemingly random characters are not, in fact, random. The same weird character will be used to replace the same regular English text character consistently across the entire area that has been jumbled.
    The two instances where this tends to occur most often, or consistently in some cases, are, first, when a paragraph or particular section of formatted text contains special characters, such as Chinese or Japanese characters, or accented letters. When this happens, usually the paragraph that contains the special characters is completely jumbled, while the rest of the text on the page will have intermittent jumbling on a word or two. Most often, the word "the" is jumbled in this case.
    The second instance where this happens is when a website uses specially formatted text in some form or another. I, not being an expert at web development, am not sure what kind of formatting causes it, but I can provide consistent examples in lieu of my experience:
    - Example 1:
    [http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/9564/firefoxcharencodingissu.jpg]
    Example 1 shows a portion of a screen-shot of the website "Joystiq.com". Every single article title on the front page of this blog is consistently jumbled, while the text of the article itself remains untouched. Please note that when this jumbled text is highlighted, it is visible un-jumbled in the right-click menu as well as in the source code of the page. Other consistent instances can be found within many search fields on various websites. For instance, the search bar located at the top right of "Kotaku.com" consistently displays jumbled characters both on its default text of "Search" and on any text that is typed into the search box itself.
    - Example 2:
    [http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/9564/firefoxcharencodingissu.jpg]
    Example 2 shows both the jumbling of the paragraph containing the character "☆" as well as the subsequent peppering of the rest of the article's text with small jumbled words. Below this is the DOM Source of the selected text which shows how the text itself is being rendered properly within the site's source. Additionally, for convenience, I have edited on to the bottom of the image a small snippet of what the search bar on the same page looks like. Notice how the grayed-out text that normally would read "Search" is instead jumbled.
    This issue has been plaguing my browser for the past year or so, and I had hoped that it would go away with subsequent Firefox updates. It has not gone away.
    Thank you for reading! Please help!

    This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
    Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
    You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
    Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.
    There have also been fonts with a Chinese name reported that identify themselves as Helvetica, so check that as well.
    Use this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter):
    <pre><nowiki>data:text/html,
    Helvetica<br><font face="Helvetica" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font><br>
    Helvetica Neue<br><font face="Helvetica Neue" size="25">abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ</font>
    </nowiki></pre>
    You should reset the network.http prefs that show user set on the about:config page.<br />
    Not all websites support http pipelining and if they do not then you can have issues with images or other problems.

  • How to preserve special characters in dynamic textfield for text comparison?

    The problem is as follows:
    Since I mostly develop for multiple languages I am forced to have dynamic textfields in my buttons which contain three lines (to account for the differnt text.lengths in different languages).
    I then populate the textfields with strings out of an array or xml and use the textfields contents later in my button class to execute different code depending on the textfields content.
    This works fine as long as I don`t use any special characters, like for example "\n".
    var labels:Array = ["\nLABEL1","LABEL\n\n2"];
    switch (e.currentTarget.txt.text)
                    case labels[0]:
                        doSomething();
                        break;
                    case labels[1]:
                        doSomethingElse();
                        break;
    shows the right thing in the button label (breaks the text were I want it)
    but stops to work
    (with htmlText &  <br> its the same)
    my workaround for the moment is to use filler spaces,
    var labels:Array = ["                   LABEL1","LABEL                                                                        2"];
    but that`s obviously ugly to setUp and requires a lot of trial/error to get it right for all languages.
    Any ideas how to bypass that?

    Bad habits die hard ;-)
    Weird enough spelling the problem out and getting this response from you cleared my head and  I finally got an easy solution.
    I simply attach a dynamic property to the movieclip, copy the array contents into them and instead of using the text-property for comparison I compare the MovieClips fresh created spectext property.
    Voila: Now I can be lazy without too much of a bad conscience.

  • SSRS and data from SharePoint lists - special characters in HTML

    Hi All,
    This may not actually fit into this forum, but here goes anyway...
    We're using SSRS to report on data stored in Project Server workspaces (so SharePoint lists). Prior to upgrading to 2013, we could pull this data in and set the "Placeholder properties" of the text box to interpret HTML tags as styles and it would
    format everything as it appeared in the SharePoint list. Now that we have upgraded to 2013, this works with a few notable exceptions - some special characters are rendered as their escaped/encoded (whatever the term is) - so a colon which is within the text
    field in SharePoint, rather than appearing in the SSRS report as ":" appears as "&#58;".
    These are multiline, rich text formatted columns in the SharePoint list. Using =Replace(Fields!Description.Value,"&#58;",":") in the report makes the appropriate replacement, but given that this occurs with a handful of other special
    characters as well, this solution becomes very unruley very quickly. Has anyone else encountered this, or does anyone have any other suggestions for a work around?
    If not now, when?

    Facing same issue but having no solution, please suggest..

  • PDFs using BI publisher and special characters - pound sterling

    I have a table with character strings which include the £ pound sterling sign.
    If I create an xml file from the table using the escape sequence for the pound sign & # 163; and load it into BI publisher, the pdf renders correctly using an rtf template.
    If I include the pound sign in the rtf template itself the pdf renders correctly and if I use a report query in Apex based on the table, and an rtf template then the pdf renders correctly.
    However there is a limit to the number of columns that can be sent to BI via the report query - we have found this to be 119 columns. For more than this we have been using a stored function to return xml data as a clob and use the clob to generate the pdf with the rtf report layout (using get_print_document). This method works fine but the pound sign is not rendered correctly (appears as "?").
    The NLS_LANG is set to english_united kingdom in the database and in BI publisher. The locale in bi publisher is en_GB. BI will create the pdf correctly with the pound sign if using a standard xml file (with escape seq for pound) so I am sure it is not a language issue in BI/Apex.
    Any ampersands in the xml cause the pdf to fail completely and we cannot represent special characters with a sequence containing the ampersand for this reason. I have tried "& # 163;" and "& amp;#163;" and variations and have also tried using CDATA, none of which gives the correct pdf output. I have also tried to switch the encoding to Windows-1252 or ISO-8859-1 in the header of the xml (xml generated by stored procedure so can control this), but this gives incorrect results too.
    We also need to send other special characters to BI via get_print_document and apex (bullet points, ampersands, dashes ) but cannot use the escape sequences because of the ampersand problem.
    Has anyone had any success with this?
    Is there any plan ( for a future version of Apex) to increase the number of columns that can be used in report query using Apex/BI publisher?
    Thanks
    Kathryn

    Hi Kathryn
    I've had exactly the same problem as you've mentioned.
    Firstly, I've also found that I cannot select more than 119 columns from a view using a report query and have opted to the use the stored function to return the xml (same as you).
    After conducting a lot of searching and experimenting i've found that you can use the following escape characters in REPLACE in your stored function:-
    '£' can be replaced with CHR(194)||CHR(163)
    '%' can be replaced with '%25'
    '&' can be replaced with '%26amp;'
    I found the above escape characters from the xml file or by opening the xml file in Wordpad. Therefore I'm sure you'll be able to find the escape characters for the other symbols that you mentioned i.e. bullet points, dashes etc.
    I hope this has helped. Good luck and let me know if you get any developments with the limitation on the number of columns that can be selected from a report query as this would save a lot of trouble (as I'm sure you're aware).
    Thanks
    Natalie

  • A problem with regex and special characters

    Hello,
    I am using regex in my application but i have a problem with special characters. Here is the explanation of what i am doing:
    I have a certain piece of text that i want to parse and replace every occurrence of a given word with some sort of a tag which have the word found inside it.
    so that: go Going Go to gOschool by bus and to learn and to play GO Go
    and i need to replace the word "go" (case insensitive and only at word boundaries) should be:
    *<start>go<end> Going <start>Go<end> to gOschool by bus and to learn and to play <start>GO<end> <start>Go<end>*
    Consider the following code and call the method with the parameter"go?"
    The Matcher finds a weird match at the word "G?oing" with only the letter G !!!
    It also ignores the "?" in the pattern completely.
    Any clue of what is happening i would be very grateful...

    replaceAll will replace all the occurrences in the text with only one word. without taking into consideration the case of the word i need to replace.No.

  • Apple, please address this issue!!! Searching and special characters

    I've found at least one other topic here regarding this issue, but Apple has yet to address it, or even confirm that it's in fact an issue.
    A big portion of my library consists of international artists, many who have special/nonstandard characters in their names (e.g. "Tiësto"). In previous versions of iTunes, I could search for "Tiesto" (note the absence of the umlaut over the 'e') and all of those tracks would appear. However, after upgrading to iTunes 9, I'm forced to search for "Tiësto" in order to view those tracks.
    Thinking about this issue, it would seem that this is normal behavior, as an artist named "Pàz" isn't necessarily the same as "Paz". But the reality is that NO ONE wants to take the time to search for the alt-code of a special character, and then type it in. Additionally, most people (including me) have a number of reasons for not renaming the artist to conform to standard characters.
    Clearly, something has changed between iTunes 8 and 9. And it's incredibly frustrating. A big chunk of my library is virtually inaccessible to me now, unless I search for terms that don't contain special characters.
    Apple, **PLEASE** address this issue. I'm not the only one with the problem and it's become a huge pain in my side to have to work around this.

    I don't see how it's sloppy or why there should be any reason that it shouldn't have given you both.
    Even putting aside that gracenote and others don't have consistent spelling in their databases, that when you download from the iTunes store, who knows what you're going to get, so that one's library could be all over the place and one might not even notice it, accents and other markings don't change the fact that a u is the same letter as ú.
    Yes, it's pronounced different. Yes, the difference is very important. But it's the same base letter. And even if it's considered a different letter in another language, in English we have 26 letters and all the accents and tildes and umlauts don't make them a new letter, which is what we're talking about here.
    It's a huge pain that looking for an album that has "Zürich" in the field and I type in "Zurich" I can't find it. I have to think about if I really do have that album, maybe I deleted it by accident, etc. And then I think to type "rich" and then it pops up.
    That's way too many steps. I don't know keyboard shortcuts and I don't want to learn them. In English, it should be letters, not characters, that count.

    Hi,
    We had one similar problem, where IGS was not showing the category axis text in right form. It got resolved by applying the additional fonts in IGS.
    By default, IGS does not have all the fonts. So, if your font is missing, it will not show the graphics in right form.
    Also, please check that you are using the latest front end components.
